The Crossing of the Fathers
Imagine, if you will, driving from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Monterey, California. Depending on the chosen route, the trip is approximately 1083 miles with a travel time of 16 hrs 30 mins. The trip is a relatively simple one – a straight shot to the west. With enough coffee and a phone full of podcasts, it is not unthinkable to make this trip in a single day. Even allotting for a few scenic detours – like a trip to Lake Powell, for example – the trip would still be a relatively easy couple of days.
Such a boring thing to write about...or is it?
In 1776, Fray Francisco Atanasio Dominguez and Fray Silvestre Velez de Escalante were charged with the task of taking this exact journey from Santa Fe to Monterey. The Spanish Crown wished to have a detailed journal inventorying the lands to the West. The journal chronicling this excursion, the Dominguez-Escalante Journal, is an absolute must read.
It is hard to fully comprehend the difficulty of such an undertaking, yet Fathers Dominguez and Escalante, with faith and resolve, set out to accomplish the task. Now that you’ve imagined the trip in your vehicle with, yes, copious amounts of coffee and hours of digital entertainment at the ready, imagine, instead, setting out from Santa Fe on horseback with an undetermined time-table for your return –if, that is, you survive.
Marked by steep canyons and rocky terrain, the area surrounding modern-day Lake Powell created great difficulty for the Fathers as they searched for a route to cross the mighty Colorado River and return to Santa Fe.
As I stand atop Alstrom Point, 1000′ above the waters of Lake Powell, it seems impossible to believe what transpired at what is now known as the Crossing of the Fathers. To cross these lands on horseback, often lowering a horse by rope down impossibly steep canyon edges in an attempt to fulfill a mission is simply astonishing. Read the book and you might understand truly how amazing this feat was.
The actual crossing was an additional 350-400′ below the current water line (depending on current lake levels), making it all the more incomprehensible.
There exists in each of us the same resolve and perseverance exhibited by Fathers Dominguez and Escalante. In some, these traits are alive and well. In others, they are simply dormant.
It is up to you to find your adventure. Find your passion. Find your cairn - and let it guide you to your destination. It’s out there, you’ve just gotta take that first step. Now get that coffee and download those podcasts (I recommend the one linked below if you have a need to laugh and a good sense of humor)- it’s time to go Adventuring.
Choose your adventure!

LaYeReD THouGHTS
Am tired, aki nimechoka na nimechoka sana
You try so hard to stay relevant
Sometimes for yourself and at times for others
Ni kaa kuuza nguruwe mskitini
Katika hizo harakati muuzaji hujipata bila mashati
Some things don’t cut it with the wrong audience
And if you’re being honest,
All things don’t cut it with the wrong crowd
Mi si slay queen na mi si ode
Kuna masaa ya uber na masaa ya rodi
Bff minister na neighbor konkodi
I realize am caught between the divide
To do and be better, and at times an eye for an eye
Do I lie? I can’t die, recognize
Am a daughter of the most high
Third eye, insight, my maker, I and I
Am confused, I lie
Am calm as the sea before a stormy night
And right after
The constant calm that always watches
Is anything really required of me?
And if it is, why is it so?
Who in society do I owe?
Didn’t each of us come on their own?
Across the stars and through birth
To curve a story, create a life, their very own
Except for the very simple fact that I am human
Nothing about me can be likened to any man
All woman, a vessel to express his will
From within, like clay to a potter
Is my individuality a crime?
Does a drop in the ocean know it is a drop, or
Does the illusion convince it, it is only part of the sea?
Who are you to me?
One in all and all is one
From the first came the last
And the last stands alone
My own
Of course, it does, isn’t it me? I?
I searched for God and only found myself
For I prayed and answered my self
Meditated and only heard my self
Kujiangalia kwa kioo ni kama kuwatch mannequin outside a store
So close yet so far away
The stranger within
So familiar, a comrade, daughter, sister
Yet a stranger, evolving, learning, ever-changing
Nina maswali kwa kweli na sicheki, nawaza nikiwazua, sibanduki
Nikinyambua na kuchanganya mchanganiko wa mawazo
Vikwwazo ninazo kwa wingi
Mi sili silali, moyo wazi , unearth me...
Aina za wanadamu natambua,
Forget the rich and the poor
Walio na ukame ama hata mvua
Diversity runs deep, every nation, under skin
Utapata shoga ana manzi
Mwalimu duanzi, utadhani ye mwanafunzi
Lipstick black na nywele samawati
Katikati mshipi rangi ya majani,
chai, hongo, mwenda pole hajikwai,
walahi, alhamdulilahi, nishawai siri za maisha,
roho dirisha, mdomo lango
Ni ka kutisha ndovu utamnyonga na kamba,
Hii life ni uncertain
The only certainty being that everything changes
Between the heart and mind
Is a walk, a stroll, one of a kind
You never walk behind, just in stride
Within the essence that powers humankind
When the heart feels the mind will rise
Stretching to find a solution inside
Your personal bona fide
Sworn servant, but a master by default
Endless chatter with nowhere to siphon
The careless servant playing master upon my throne
Absent master, caught inside, locked within
Where are my thoughts? Why them? Is this a bad thought? What haven’t I bought? Where’s my charger? I need a nap. Why the hell is it so hot? Organized chaos, mental mad hatter
Si advice na si suluhisho
Fikira kama mto, bila wito, kelele bila mwisho
Aki nimechoka, nimechoka tena sana
So I take matters into my own hands
This life is divine and its mine
As long as dawn comes, the sun will rise
As long as am alive I’ll use my eyes
To see what needs to be seen and observe the rest
As long as am alive, my body will serve
Me as the master and my servant mind
Pure essence, imperfect growth
Body host for my Soul
In and out of dreamland
Occasionally I pause
With fire burning, I acknowledge that
Am a woman with some flaws but
a rebel with a cause
I stop to listen to what the servant has to say
For they know my home
The armies of cells know my organs best,
Running everything while my mind is at rest
It’s fine, the heart will always bridge the divide
This or that, fire and ice
From ashes comes the Phoenix
My only truth knowledge
From the worst comes the best
The best being the manifestation of
The worsts constant need for purification, imperfect perfection
The desired outcome is always a result
Of the test of a lifetime
the only test in this lifetime
the ability to change and adapt,
Multiple manifestations of the creative will aside,
The journey within has its own tide
And with every passing cloud
comes the sun in between, strong and purposeful
always shining for the Leo in me
