[Review] Sega Pocket Arcade: Ecco the Dolphin (1995)
Tumblr media
A rare dolphin treat.
A while ago I bought the Sega Pocket Arcade: Ecco the Dolphin from 1994 (pictured on the left, below). Much to my dismay, problems with the unit design caused hardware issues that rendered the game unplayable. Still, it’s a great collector’s item in a unique form factor. However, a much rarer item is the second Ecco the Dolphin handheld from 1995-according to the back of the unit (pictured on the right)-or 1997 going by the packaging. Although Tiger is often credited for the initial “red label” games in this line, their branding is absent from the packaging so Sega of America may have internally developed the first model and manufactured it in the US, but the 1995 blue label model was certainly and proudly developed by the experienced LCD game company Tiger and made in China… and by the way, the hardware did not almost instantly fail on me.
Tumblr media
Sega’s initial Pocket Arcade line had a few different case designs, some with slide-out screens. Their clamshell units included Ecco, Columns, and Football. When Tiger took over, all of their line, such as this second Ecco, Nights, and the enticing Panzer Dragoon, used the screen-protecting clamshell design. They also seem to universally use a much smaller inset screen compared to the first lineup, no doubt a cost-saving measure that unfortunately hampers playability somewhat.
Now, observe the two units side by side. Note the differences in screen layout and button distribution. These are in fact two completely separate games with differing design, graphics, and controls. Both have Ecco auto-swimming to the right, avoiding hostile sea life over a number of levels, but each has unique features. The first game has an active sonar mechanic, which can reveal tunnels to swim through (similar to the OG dolphin game, Activision’s Dolphin) and interact with glyphs. It has a speed control mechanic, hazardous seagulls above the waves, and dolphin family members to rescue, not to mention descriptive level write-ups in the manual.
By contrast, this second unit seems simpler, more of a straightforward survival game. But there’s enough depth for an LCD game, with three planes of action and the life/air bars to juggle. Surfacing for air is necessary but sometimes blocked by a jellyfish, and health can be refilled by tapping the Eat button on the lower lane when a fish comes along amongst the coral. There are many hazards on the bottom layer to be wary of, though.
Tumblr media
The biggest foe is the octopus who emerges from the right to menace two lanes with tentacular ferocity! Combine this with a jelly up top and you’re in a right pickle. However, a back-dodge can grant temporary sanctuary especially when chained together. More types of sharks appear as the levels progress to threaten each lane, and other, more difficult to identify, creatures add to the dangers of the deep. This game features a passive sonar to help you avoid the larger threats, with a sort of status bar that displays the direction of imminent attacks.
There are six levels in total (compared to the first unit’s seven), with the action speeding up as you advance. Beat level six and you win the game, or so the cardboard insert claims. The pace of gameplay and the intense rate at which your air depletes at this stage meant that I couldn’t manage to clear it. Your number of lives resets to 3 on each stage, so there’s no way to stock up or lasting penalty for taking a few dings. The game also tracks your score, which as far as I could tell just increases naturally as you progress regardless of your actions. It seems a little pointless, especially because it maxes out at 9990 partway through level five!
Tumblr media
The soundscape is a few mere beeps and dare I say boops governed by your actions, and the majority of the backdrop is just a blue gradient… of course, this means it doesn’t obscure sprites like some other LCD games’ busy backgrounds. Those sprites are lovely, distinctive and detailed. Well, most of them anyway; some of the enemy critters don’t show up well on this tiny screen.
From what I could tell of the first unit, it tries to make each level somewhat distinctive, with an adventure feel as you can start from any stage you’ve unlocked, while this second one is content to just up the speed and add a couple of new enemy types as you advance, making it more of a score-chasing action game. It does have some nice little touches though, like the land edges that border each stage, and the lightning storm in the skies above, while the printed sandy coral layer on the sea floor mitigates the lack of the stunning sky vista the first game had. The two complement each other well, and I feel a lucky collector indeed to now own both, even if the first one is busted and the second has an ever so small screen. I just love dolphin games that much!

So I was mostly going through them for uh research out of curiosity
But I think it might interest Sontails fans to know that shockingly few of the English game manuals comment about either Sonic or Tails seeing the other as a brother/sibling.
For reference, as I went down the list of Sonic games on Wikipedia and checked the english manuals, I didn't see a single English manual before Sonic Heroes list them as brothers to each other (no mention of relationship at worst, and best friends/buddies at most). Funnily enough, the Sonic Heroes Manual was also the first English Manual I saw list that many ages at once. The only ones I could find before that listed Knuckles' and Charmy's ages. So as far as I've gathered, Sonic heroes may be the first English Manual to claim Tails as 8 years old (which also was the manual that changed Charmy's age from 16 to 6), and was the only English manual I found that listed Tails' age at all
And between Sonic Heroes and the Wii U/3DS Sonic titles (when manuals stopped having any extra info aside from controls in them), I found—what—like four that mention them being like brothers?
I did look at this a couple weeks ago but like. Those four I found were Sonic Heroes, Sonic Advance 3, Sonic Rush, and Sonic Rush Adventure.
*Four* Sonic game manuals from the plethora of games that released before 3ds/wiiu titles came out. 3 of those 4 are handheld nintendo exclusives. That's 1991 through about 2011 (3DS) or 2013 (WiiU)
Here's some shots I have of some of the manuals (aside from those four) that mention their relationship in any capacity.
Tumblr media
From the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 English Sega Genesis Game Manual (Page 3)
Tumblr media
From the Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble English Sega Game Gear Game Manual (Page 1)
Tumblr media
From the Sonic Blast English Sega Pocket Arcade Game Manual
Tumblr media
From the Sonic Adventure English Sega Dreamcast Game Manual (Page 20)
Tumblr media
From the Sonic Adventure 2 Battle English Nintendo Gamecube Game Manual (Page 8)
Tumblr media
From the Sonic Advance 2 English Gameboy Advance Game Manual (Page 4)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the Sonic Colors English Nintendo Wii Game Manual (Pages 3-4)
Tumblr media
From the Sonic Generations English Playstation 3 Game Manual (Page 4)
Is this...interesting to anyone else?
Let me tell you, I went through a lot of game manuals. Even for games Tails doesn't star in. The rest of the manuals I looked through only had one of either Sonic or Tails, didn't list character bios for them, or didn't note their relationship to each other in any capacity.
Given what I've heard about the Knuckles Chaotix Japanese game manual also listing Vector and Espio's ages as well as Charmy's (whereas the English Manual only lists Charmy's), I'd love to see translations of the Japanese versions of all the Sonic game manuals. It's hard not to wonder what changes there are between the versions.
But in any case, food for thought.

Sega Saturn - Virtua Racing Sega Saturn (Time Warner Interactive's V.R. Virtua Racing)
Title: Virtua Racing Sega Saturn /
Developer/Publisher: Sega / Time Warner Interactive
Release date: 22 December 1995
Catalogue No.: T-4803G
Genre: Racing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I bought this Japanese version hoping that it would be different from the God-awful US and PAL versions (which I stupidly bought with my own school pocket money back in 2014). Guess what. It's the same bloody game with everything in English and that annoying woman's voice is still there when you watch the movies for each track. Oh well, at least they changed the title to Virtua Racing Sega Saturn (^v^).  The following text is pasted from my PAL review script I had in hand, but never published. Note: I have since sold my NTSC-US and PAL versions just so I could buy myself some basketball shoes at one point.
If you've already read my Race Drivin' post, you'll know just what I think of Time Warner Interactive. My classmate from high school told me that his father was lucky enough to see an early beta of Virtua Racing many months before the official Japanese launch of the Saturn. What I saw then based on the footage he sent me during computer class was a diabolical mess. Try to imagine a very poorly built course moving along at something like 15fps, a bit like an Atari Jaguar 3D racer really (^v^). Anyway, Time Warner Interactive promised that the final release of Sega's Virtua Racing would be every bit as impressive as the arcade plus many new tracks and cars. Well, they sort of kept their word.
The Saturn version did indeed have many more tracks and cars but my arse it was as impressive as the arcade. The game still moves at a very poor 20fps if that. The controls are very unresponsive, and the pop-up is pretty bad too. After seeing Time Warner's Race Drivin' which was released before Virtua Racing, I sort of suspected that Virtua Racing on the Saturn would turn out to be a massive pile of steaming poo. The thing that gets me is why did Sega hand over such a great license to such a shitty company?
I urge everyone to play the far superior Sega-made 32X version or even the Mega Drive version, heck even the Sega Ages Playstation 2 or Sega Ages Nintendo Switch version over this crap. Oh, one more thing, one of my older copies was the PAL European release, but it works perfectly in a Japanese Saturn. In other words, it's region-free. Very odd indeed.

[Completed It] Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name
Tumblr media
A few short thoughts about the new Yakuza/Like a Dragon game, I’ve been a long time fan of the series and followed Kazuma’s story from start to somewhat-finish. I was sad when I finished Yakuza 6 and realised it was the end of Kazuma’s story, at least thats what I thought. Although they have gone a new direction with Ichiban, including a complete change to the games combat system, it seems they can never really leave Kazuma Kiryu behind.
Constantly dragging him back into the mix of things to torture him, knowing full well he’ll never get to see the kids at Sunshine again. Gaiden ups the ante, not only constantly threatening the kids at the Orphanage, but also everyone seems to know that Joryu is in fact Kiryu (not that they went to any great length to hide his identity, just a pair of glasses in the same vain as Clark Kent/Superman). This makes the whole ‘Kiryu faking his death’ thing rather redundant.
Like a Dragon Gaiden is a short affair, taking roughly 20 hours to complete when taking into consideration some of the side content (I didn’t complete everything, but will slowly work on that over the course of the next few months). There is plenty in this game to keep you going, including the re-release of some classic Sega games in the arcades, and the return of Pocket Circuit. As with all Yakuza/LAD games, the main story is just a moderately sized piece of a larger pie. And this ‘short’ sequel/prequel has plenty to keep you engaged.

I am now the proud owner of a Retroid Pocket 3 Plus (transparent blue) and after a week of playing this thing pretty much nonstop, here are my impressions.
[tl;dr: kind of a grind to set up, but works pretty great once you do!]
If you decide to get yourself one of these devices, I cannot recommend Retro Game Corps' starter guides highly enough. Here's one specific to the Retroid Pocket 2+/3/3+/Flip. Here's one that goes into more detail on RetroArch. And just for giggles, here's a general Android emulation starter guide. Oh, and you might be cool with Retroid's frontend but you'll probably like Daijisho a lot more, so here's a guide for that (sadly only in video form).
Initial setup and copying of ROMs and whatnot was a slog. Mostly because pretty much all the emulators on my PC work fine with ROMs in unzipped .zip files while (according to the wiki and I'm going to cry if I spent all that time unzipping .zips for nothing) most of the RetroArch cores other than MAME want the ROMs unzipped and hand-fed to them. Also, you'll probably need to reconfigure some controls and other settings. HOWEVER! Once you've got all your shit where it needs to go, and once you've got all your emulators set up and Daijisho in and pointed to all the right paths, that's the hard part done and over with. From there on out It Just Works. You can even set Daijisho such that you never even have to see the Android behind the curtain. Battery life is pretty decent. It feels fairly comfortable in my tiny hands, I wish there were grippy-bumps or whatnot on the back but now apparently Retroid is making a grippy case add-on? The buttons feel good, though apparently future stick drift is a possibility. One that can be fixed for about $25 with a pair of Gulikit hall sensor sticks, so I'm not too worried about that right now. The screen is nice and bright and apparently can be software-tweaked to be better but I didn't bother, this is fine. Audio is... okay but that's why God made earbuds and whatnot. Also, one caveat: playing heftier stuff on this system will make it hot. Never alarmingly "oh shit turn it off now" hot and it barely gets lukewarm on older-system stuff, but it's definitely noticeable with PS2 and graphics-heavy games like NieR: Reincarnation.
Now, as for what it can play:
The RP3+ can, in my personal experience so far, reliably play pretty much everything up to PS1/PSP/Sega Saturn tier with no or minimal tweaking, with a couple of exceptions (I had to twiddle some settings for N64 and MAME, and Duckstation and AetherSX2 have to be hand-fed a BIOS in initial setup).
My current values of "everything" are:
Atari 2600
Game Boy
GBC
GBA
Arcade (MAME)
NES
SNES
N64 (mixed results; Mario Kart runs like a champ but Pokemon Snap crashes)
Genesis
Saturn
PS1
PSP
As for systems beyond: I've had mixed results that skew "definitely playable" with PS2 and had to change some stuff in the AetherSX2 setup wizard to get that. I haven't played a lot of PS2 stuff on it yet but Final Fantasy XII seems to run pretty great so far. Fatal Frame runs pretty well (though apparently there's something I need to tweak in the per-game settings to make anomalies and whatnot show up). Magic Pengel, of all things, ran like hot garbage but that was before I RTFM and reran the setup wizard with changes so it might do better now. Sadly my PC's DVD drive has shat the bed so I can't rip anything else until the replacement comes in. There's a community spreadsheet linked in the RP3 setup guide up there that will tell you what per-game tweaks you might need to make.
I haven't tried Gamecube or Dreamcast yet, but word is it's the same deal as PS2. It can run DS/3DS/Wii emulators, but honestly I can't stomach the idea of playing DS/3DS on a single screen (and besides that is what I have a hacked 3DS for but never mind that) and the WiiWare I've tried runs okay but Wii with touchscreen-instead-of-wiimote just feels weird (and that is what I have a hacked Wii for but never mind that)
And of course, being an Android device, it can of course run Android games. NieR: Reincarnation ran like refried ass on my phone, but it runs great on the RP3+. It does have micro HDMI out, and you can pair it with an Android-compatible controller, though I haven't tried that yet. And of course you can install your streaming apps of choice on it if you want.
Anyway, it's definitely a lot of handheld for not a whole lot of money and I'm digging it!

Noites no Japão - Episódio Piloto (Parte 3)

Bom...alguns devem conhecer "X-Men vs. Street Fighter" e "Street Fighter Ex Plus Alpha".

APENAS ME DIVERTIR!

O importante é que o time vença!

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was just another day after school. Nene going to the arcade as usual and you too! You ran as fast as you can to the arcade! And you finally reach it! And you wanna try to break the score in one specific game.. that's right! Puyonara! A shooting game where we have to shoot incredibly cute but dangerous puyos! And of course you immediately sat down after securing that nobody is gonna play it and on the road to beat the high score!!!
As you walked down to the arcade you immediately went to the game puyonara and.. saw that someone is already playing it.. what a joke playing here.. maybe I can watch them play it? You silently watched behind them and.. SAW THEM BEATING YOUR HIGH SCORE THAT YOU KEPT FOR 2 YEARS?!? HOW?? you were utterly shocked and they noticed you watching them play. They immediately get embarrassed and blushed slightly
"erm hello?.. were you gonna play this game? Sorry! I'll let you play it.." they immediately rushed to another game like the official Miku ddr.. maybe you can see them again in the same place? You smiled idiotically and blushed slightly to yourself. Maybe you can get to know them better?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a tiring and boring week spending time at school you finally can go to the arcade this weekend!! You wonder what game you will be playing.. DDR? Fps? Any comically cute Kirby game?? Ahh.. just thinking of the arcade makes your head hyperfixate it for another year (it's been 3 years) and you get ready and run as fast as you can to the arcade!
Finally you reached the arcade! After swiftly running and also swiftly getting tired you finally reached the arcade!! Now.. what game should I play... Oh I know!! One game that nobody's highest score have beaten the highest of them all.. the Hatsune Miku DDR.. to be exact.. AMARA THE GREAT INTELLIGENCE SONG!!!. oh you're so excited! You're gonna beat the high score of course! Isn't it breath relieving to finally beat the high score??!
You walked slowly going to the arcade you only go there on Saturdays now... Since your overly busy schedule especially since akito is gonna have a live show again.. it's better to relax a bit hm.. you walked to your favorite ddr just to find someone else playing it... Tough luck.. you got closer to see.. your upperclassmen? And.. they're beating your high score?! Huh?! They look so cheery.. you never.. ah it's better to stop talking.. "ahaha! Done and done!!" You saw them cheered and when they turned their back.. oh they were embarrassed.. oh so embarrassed.. "ah!! I'm sorry if you wanted to play it!! Erm I'll get going now!!" They wonder off as they left you dumbfounded

PC Engine - Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams
Title: Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams / コットン
Developer/Publisher: Success Corp. / Hudson-Era H.K. / Hudson Soft
Release date: 12 February 1993
Catalogue No.: HCD3043
Genre: Shooting
Format: Super CD-ROM2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cotton was an arcade game originally developed by Success Corp., published by Sega, and which ran on the Sega System 16 arcade board. It also saw several ports to systems like the Sharp X68000, this PC Engine version, the Neo Geo Pocket Color, and the Sony PlayStation.
Anything goes in a game like this; you never know what's going to show up next. I appreciate the imagination but sometimes it's hard to tell what's harmful! Sure you can brush up against that jagged landscape but touching a cloud is fatal. Each stage ends with an obligatory boss encounter and some transform into several forms so never let your guard down. I recommend using turbo to engage rapid-fire until you reach a boss, at which time you'll want to use your charge attacks. Cotton is a challenging game. Enemies drop crystals but they are hard to gather because when you shoot them they fire into the air like rockets. Collecting them once they settle on the ground is risky because there's often something lurking in the scenery. The upbeat musical score is a lot of fun but the explosion effects have some static. The game offers three continues and saves high scores. Cotton is a thoroughly ridiculous shooter that's occasionally irritating but always entertaining.
Oh, and one note, the US version of this game has no voice acting in the cutscenes, while the Japanese version does, as you can see on the back of the case. Yes, this is another PC Engine CD game that saw an American release.

Best nes emulators libretro
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It uses stolen code and is all around dodgy. These cores can also be used in other programs that implement the Libretro Application Programming Interface (API). These plugins are called cores, and you need to install them inside RetroArch to be able to use them.
Sony PlayStation 2: The only legit emulator is called Play!, but it is still early in development. RetroArch is a modular program that runs emulators and games within its framework as if they were plugins.
Sega Saturn: uoYabause (for GLES 3.0 compatible devices) or Retroarch Yabause core.
Neo Geo Pocket/Pocket Color: Mednafen (Libretro).
Pixel Perfect (Integer Scaling) not working right libretro/libretro-fceumm41. matcarfer mentioned this issue on Apr 11, 2016. Here’s our list of the best emulators available for Android in 2021: Display aspect ratio should not be 4:3 libretro/libretro-fceumm40. This includes a multitude of computer systems as well. It was first released in 1983 for the MSX, NEC PC-6001/8801, Sharp MZ-700 and FM-7 in Japan, and for the ZX Spectrum in Europe (under the English language title Eric and the Floaters). Overall best emulators for Android in 2021Īt this point, there are Android emulators for almost every system up to the sixth generation of consoles. Online version of Bomberman for NES.Bomberman is an arcade-style maze-based video game developed by Hudson Soft. Many of the emulators we recommend below are paid products, but they’re typically easier to configure and include features that aren’t available in Retroarch. Unfortunately, Android doesn’t have the plethora of free emulators available on PC. Users will have to either download the cores manually and place them in the right location or sideload the APK from the RetroArch website, which includes the core downloader. John NES is NES/Famicom emulator for android 2.3+.This app does not work without your own game files. The versions found on the Google Play Store don’t include the core downloader due to store policies. It utilizes Libretro a powerful development. However, it’s can be harder to set up since it relies on individual cores that have to be downloaded. RetroArch is definitely one of the best Super Nintendo emulators which come with cross-platform support. For those looking for the best free emulators for Android, Retroarch is usually the answer.
