3 Women Become Priests In Tamil Nadu
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3 Women Become Priests In Tamil Nadu Chennai: Taking the opportunity to close the gender gap in the profession, three young women -- one the first graduate in a family, another a graduate and the third a postgraduate -- have chosen to take up the sacred vocation of priest in a Hindu temple. The salary is meagre but that does not seem to be an issue for these pious young women who say god will provide for their needs. "I was working in a private firm in Chennai and gave up the job after my friend brought to my notice the state government's announcement on training women from all castes to become temple priests," says N Ranjitha, a BSc Visual Communications graduate. "I found it important to serve god and hence the decision to become a priest," Ranjitha told PTI. Her parents from Needamangalam in Tiruvarur district are farmers and she is the first graduate in her family, she said. Like her, S Ramya, a postgraduate in Mathematics, and S Krishnaveni, a graduate in Mathematics, decided to dedicate their lives to temple service. The three were among the 98 archakas -- the other 95 being men -- who successfully completed a one-year course organised by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department. The training was challenging initially but their teacher Sundar Bhattar taught them well, Ranjitha said. They newly ordained women are to be posted as assistant priests in Vaishnavaite temples under the ambit of the HR & CE department to undergo training for a year, after which they will be given permanent positions. According to Krishnaveni, both her father and grandfather served at the Mariamman temple in their village in Tittakudi in Cuddalore district. "Neither I nor others are worried about the salary since we trust that the Lord will provide for us," she said. All of them were initiated into priesthood from the Mannargudi Sendalangara Jeeyar during the sixth month of their training. They have been trained in Pancharatra agama, the Vaishnavaite tradition of worship, during their time at the Archakar Training School run by the Sri Ranganathar Temple in Srirangam. Like the rest of the trainees, they too were provided a monthly stipend of Rs 3,000. Ramya, also from Tittakudi, hopes to take up the new role in a major temple so that she can get an opportunity to learn more and gain good exposure as well. All the 98 archakas and four odhuvars (who recite devotional hymns in temples) received their certificates from HR & CE Minister P K Sekar Babu at a function held here recently. 3 Women Become Priests In Tamil Nadu Read the full article

The minister complained of chest pain while being taken for investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The medical report will also be sent to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) by the ED to ask their opinion, said sources.
The minister was arrested in connection with the cash for jobs scam when he was the transport minister during AIADMK regime in 2011-15. CM MK Stalin visited Senthil Balaji at the hospital. Ministers PK Sekar Babu, M Subramanian and Udhayanidhi Stalin are still in the hospital.

TN minister Senthil Balaji hospitalised; breaks down after ED arrest under PMLA
It is learnt that while he was being taken into custody at 2 am, the minister complained of chest pain and was taken to the multi-speciality hospital in Omandurar Estate.
Tumblr media
CHENNAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday arrested Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after a long session of questioning.
However, the Tamil Nadu minister has been hospitalised in the ICU of a government hospital here early on Wednesday after he complained of uneasiness during ED raids at his premises on June 13.
Initially, Senthil Balaji was taken into custody by the ED after 18 hours of questioning by the Central agency. It is learnt that while he was being taken into custody at 2 am, the minister complained of chest pain and was taken to the multi-speciality hospital in Omandurar Estate. TV visuals showed Balaji being uneasy while being brought to the hospital in the wee hours of this morning.
The arrest sparked concern in the DMK camp as ministers, PK Sekar Babu, and Udayanidi Stalin rushed to the hospital to meet the minister. Sekar Babu claimed there were 'symptoms' Balaji has been 'tortured.'
After visiting Senthil Balaji at the hospital, HR and CE minister Sekar Babu said that the electricity minister was unconscious. "He didn't respond despite calling his name several times. There is swelling on his leg. The state he was brought to the hospital shows there are human rights violations," Sekar Babu said.
He also alleged that the enforcement directorate, CBI and the income tax department are acting at the behest of the central government against those opposing the bad politics of the central government.
"Several leaders, including chief ministers of other states and the parliamentary opposition leader, condemning the union government shows there is opposition centrally. DMK government, led by MK Stalin, will face the problem legally. More than a minister, Senthil Balaji is a DMK worker. The CM will fight for every DMK worker to save him and all actions will be taken based on his guidance," the DMK minister told media persons.
Law minister S Reghupathy, who visited the hospital, also said there was no clarity if Balaji has been arrested. He questioned the need for the ED raids at Balaji's house running non-stop for hours.
DMK advocates, who visited the hospital, demanded the ED officially make it clear immediately whether Balaji has been arrested or not.
Meanwhile, V Ananda Kumar, the nodal officer at the Omandurar hospital, said that Senthil Balaji is being treated for blood pressure and variations in the ECG and added that there were no external injuries to the Electricity Minister. "After Covid-19, several patients come with the complaint and there is a standard operating procedure for such cases. While we are investigating if he has been tortured, there are no external injuries," he added.
The arrest comes after Supreme Court had last month allowed police and ED to probe into an alleged cash-for-jobs scam against Balaji, who also holds the Prohibition and Excise portfolio.
Senthil Balaji was the transport minister in the AIADMK government, led by the late J Jayalalithaa, during the period 2011-15.
There were complaints against him, in which it was alleged he had received huge amounts as bribes from various persons for appointing them as drivers and conductors in the transport corporation.
The ED conducted the searches under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Last month, the Income Tax department too had searched Balaji's close aides in the state.
The searches are also happening in the wake of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit on Sunday. The visit was marred by controversy when street lights went off outside Chennai airport. Balaji has termed it accidental.

WOMEN TRAINED in ‘Agama Sastra’ – the manual for worship and rituals at temples – can be appointed as temple priests, Tamil Nadu minister in charge of Hindu temples’ administration Sekar Babu said on Sunday, a day after his remarks on opening temple doors to women priests triggered debates in the state.
The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister told The Indian Expressthat there was no prior discussions on this at the government level but they would consider it and make all arrangements if women trained in Agama Sastra want to take up the role of temple priests.
“When media persons asked me [on Saturday] whether women will be allowed to take up the role of temple priests, I said those who are trained in Agama Sastra will be allowed. If there are requests or grievances from women who would love to take up the role of temple priests, we will definitely consider them. The criteria would be their expertise in Agama tradition. If there are such requests, they may be given necessary training and interviewed before we absorb them,” Babu told The Indian Express.
Tumblr media
While neighbouring Kerala too was not known for any such formal government move to allow women priests for gender equality, both Tamil Nadu and Kerala have many temples – especially subcultural deities – with women priests.
When asked about the social acceptance to such an idea, Babu said they would be considering all those aspects and other practical aspects as well, including “five-day leave for women” to stay away from rituals during menstruation.
In 2008, the Madras High Court had in an order allowed a women priest to conduct pujas in a temple after her father, a priest, died.
The order, which was lauded by many, including the then chief minister M Karunanidhi in his speech in the assembly, was based on a petition filed by Pinniyakkal, a woman priest, following the death of her father Pinnathevar, who used to perform pujas at the Arulmigu Durgai Amman Kovil in a Madurai village.
Although her father died in 2006, Pinniyakkal had been performing pujas and other rituals from 2004 as he was sick. After his death, she was stopped from functioning as the priest by the villagers following an objection from an individual who staked his claim to be the hereditary priest. After she approached it, the High Court observed that “neither any provisions of law nor any scheme prohibits women performing pujas in the said temple”. The court said the argument that only a male member can be the priest has no legal or factual basis. “It is ironic that when the presiding deity of the temple was an “Amman” in a female form, objections were being raised against a woman in performing pujas in such temples,” Justice K Chandru said in his order.
Justice Chandru, who is now retired, said allowing women priests in Tamil Nadu would not be a tough task as there is no ban for women in non-Agama temples. “Majority temples here are non-Agamas. Except those established in very older periods as per the Agama Sastra, smaller temples established in the past few hundred years are not Agama temples although they may be taking guidance from bigger temples,” he said.
