CAA: Issues in the legal challenge to the law
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) of 2019, passed by the Parliament of India, seeks to amend the Citizenship Act of 1955, which provides for the acquisition and determination of Indian citizenship.
Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs notified the Citizenship Amendment Rules under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Tumblr media
Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019
The CAA amends the Citizenship Act of 1955 to incorporate these provisions, marking a significant change in India's citizenship policy.
Aim:
To give citizenship to the target group of migrants even if they do not have valid travel documents as mandated in The Citizenship Act, 1955.
To address the issue of persecution faced by religious minorities in neighbouring countries and provide them with refuge and citizenship in India.
The act provides a fast-track path to Indian citizenship for religious minorities – Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian – from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
The act has also cut the period of citizenship by naturalisation from 11 years to 5 i.e. eligible immigrants from these countries who entered India before December 31, 2014, can apply for citizenship under the CAA.
Thus, the amendment relaxed the requirements for certain categories of migrants, specifically based on religious lines, originating from three neighbouring countries with Muslim-majority populations.
It is noteworthy that the act does not include Muslims among the eligible religious groups for expedited citizenship.
Criticism: The act violates the secular principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution by discriminating against Muslims and undermining the idea of equal treatment under the law.
Exempted Areas: Certain categories of areas, such as tribal areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura, as well as areas safeguarded by the 'Inner Line' system, were excluded from the scope of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Eligibility
Under the CAA Rules, migrants from these nations are required to demonstrate their country of origin, their religion, the date of their entry into India, and proficiency in an Indian language as prerequisites for applying for Indian citizenship.
Additionally, any document indicating that "either of the parents or grandparents or great-grandparents of the applicant is or had been a citizen of one of the three countries" is also acceptable.
The Rules specify 20 documents that can establish the date of entry into India for admissible proof.
Challenges in the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)
Legal Challenges:
Constitutional Validity: The CAA has faced legal challenges regarding its constitutionality, particularly with respect to Articles 14 (equality before law) and 15 (prohibition of discrimination) of the Indian Constitution. By providing preferential treatment to certain religious groups while excluding others, the CAA contravenes these fundamental rights and is seen as discriminatory and contrary to the principle of equality.
Against Secularism: The CAA's focus on granting citizenship based on religious lines, specifically excluding Muslims, is seen as contrary to the secular ethos of the Indian Constitution.
State Opposition: Several states have opposed the implementation of the CAA, leading to potential legal conflicts between the central government and state governments.
Administrative Challenges:
Documentation Verification: Verifying the authenticity of documents proving the eligibility criteria specified in the CAA can pose a significant administrative burden.
Infrastructure: Lack of adequate infrastructure and resources in government departments responsible for processing citizenship applications may hinder the smooth implementation of the CAA.
Social and Political Challenges:
Communal Tensions: The exclusion of Muslims from the purview of the CAA has led to communal tensions and polarization, affecting social harmony in various parts of the country.
Citizenship Criteria: The religious-based criteria for citizenship under the CAA have sparked debates about the secular nature of the Indian state and have been criticized for undermining the principles of equality and inclusivity.
Protest and Opposition: Widespread protests against the CAA have created political challenges for the government, leading to public unrest and opposition from various civil society groups and political parties.
International Relations:
Diplomatic Fallout: The CAA has strained relations with neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, which have expressed concerns about its impact on bilateral relations and regional stability.
Refugee Crisis: The CAA's focus on granting citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighbouring countries could exacerbate refugee crises and strain India's relations with international bodies and humanitarian organizations.
Economic Challenges:
Resource Allocation: Implementing the CAA may require significant financial resources for processing citizenship applications, accommodating new citizens, and addressing potential socio-economic challenges arising from demographic changes.
Section 6A of The Citizenship Act, 1955 and Assam:
Section 6A was incorporated into the Citizenship Act subsequent to the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985. The Accord outlines the criteria for identifying foreigners in the state of Assam, establishing March 24, 1971, as the cutoff date, which contradicts the cutoff date specified in the CAA 2019.

CBiBank Research Department: Uncertainty Looms Over Education in Uttar Pradesh as Madrasa Teachers Face Funding Crisis
By Jessie Miranda
Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, is facing an imminent education crisis as it stops payments to over 21,000 teachers in madrasas, with a significant impact on subjects like mathematics and science. The abrupt decision, occurring just before the general election, adds complexity to the ongoing debate about minority rights and discrimination. The teachers affected play a crucial role in shaping the academic journey of students, particularly those belonging to the Muslim community, which constitutes nearly a fifth of Uttar Pradesh's population.
The funding cut is linked to the federal government's discontinuation of the Scheme for Providing Quality Education in Madrasas, a move reflected in a document from the Ministry of Minority Affairs dated March 2022. This decision has sparked concerns about the potential loss of jobs for teachers who have been working tirelessly to provide education in essential subjects, despite facing limited resources and infrastructure challenges.
While calls to revive the educational program persist, there is a broader concern about the treatment of religious minorities in India, especially in regions governed by the Hindu nationalist BJP. The decision raises questions about the government's commitment to providing inclusive and quality education, especially for minority communities. Education experts and advocates stress the importance of reinstating the program to ensure that students, particularly those in madrasas, have access to a well-rounded curriculum and a promising academic future. The ongoing uncertainty highlights the need for comprehensive educational policies that address the diverse needs of India's population, fostering an environment that promotes inclusivity, diversity, and equal opportunities in education.

The guardian angel of Science and Tech
 https://www.linkedin.cn/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6748246588021452800
We are living in a technical age. Many are convinced that science and
technology hold the answers to all our problems. We should just let the
scientists and technicians go on with their work, and they will create
heaven here on earth. But science is not an enterprise that takes place on
some superior moral or spiritual plane above the rest of human activity.
Like all other parts of our culture, it is shaped by economic, political and
religious interests.
Science is a very expensive affair. A biologist seeking to understand
the human immune system requires laboratories, test tubes, chemicals
and electron microscopes, not to mention lab assistants, electricians,
plumbers and cleaners. An economist seeking to model credit markets
must buy computers, set up giant databanks and develop complicated
data-processing programs. An archaeologist who wishes to understand
the behavior of archaic hunter-gatherers must travel to distant lands,
excavate ancient ruins and date fossilized bones and artefacts. All of this
costs money.
During the past 500 years’ modern science has achieved wonders
thanks largely to the willingness of governments, businesses, foundations
and private donors to channel billions of dollars into scientific research.
These billions have done much more to chart the universe, map the
planet and catalogue the animal kingdom than did Galileo Galilei,
Christopher Columbus and Charles Darwin. If these particular geniuses
had never been born, their insights would probably have occurred to
others. But if the proper funding were unavailable, no intellectual
brilliance could have compensated for that. If Darwin had never been
born, for example, we’d today attribute the theory of evolution to Alfred
Russel Wallace, who came up with the idea of evolution via natural
selection independently of Darwin and just a few years later. But if the
European powers had not financed geographical, zoological and
botanical research around the world, neither Darwin nor Wallace would
have had the necessary empirical data to develop the theory of
evolution. It is likely that they would not even have tried.
Why did the billions start flowing from government and business
coffers into labs and universities? In academic circles, many are naïve
enough to believe in pure science. They believe that government and
business altruistically give them money to pursue whatever research
projects strike their fancy. But this hardly describes the realities of
science funding.
Most scientific studies are funded because somebody believes they can
help attain some political, economic or religious goal. For example, in
the sixteenth century, kings and bankers channelled enormous resources
to finance geographical expeditions around the world but not a penny
for studying child psychology. This is because kings and bankers
surmised that the discovery of new geographical knowledge would
enable them to conquer new lands and set up trade empires, whereas
they couldn’t see any profit in understanding child psychology.
In the 1940s the governments of America and the Soviet Union
channelled enormous resources to the study of nuclear physics rather
than underwater archaeology. They surmised that studying nuclear
physics would enable them to develop nuclear weapons, whereas
underwater archaeology was unlikely to help win wars. Scientists
themselves are not always aware of the political, economic and religious
interests that control the flow of money; many scientists do, in fact, act
out of pure intellectual curiosity. However, only rarely do scientists
dictate the scientific agenda.
Even if we wanted to finance pure science unaffected by political,
economic or religious interests, it would probably be impossible. Our
resources are limited, after all. Ask a congressman to allocate an
additional million dollars to the National Science Foundation for basic
research, and he’ll justifiably ask whether that money wouldn’t be better
used to fund teacher training or to give a needed tax break to a troubled
factory in his district. To channel limited resources we must answer
questions such as ‘What is more important?’ and ‘What is good?’ And
these are not scientific questions. Science can explain what exists in the
world, how things work, and what might be in the future. By definition,
it has no pretensions to knowing what should be in the future. Only
religions and ideologies seek to answer such questions.
Consider the following quandary: two biologists from the same
department, possessing the same professional skills, have both applied
for a million-dollar grant to finance their current research projects.
Professor Slughorn wants to study a disease that infects the udders of
cows, causing a 10 per cent decrease in their milk production. Professor
Sprout wants to study whether cows suffer mentally when they are
separated from their calves. Assuming that the amount of money is
limited, and that it is impossible to finance both research projects, which
one should be funded?
There is no scientific answer to this question. There are only political,
economic and religious answers. In today’s world, it is obvious that
Slughorn has a better chance of getting the money. Not because udder
diseases are scientifically more interesting than bovine mentality, but
because the dairy industry, which stands to benefit from the research,
has more political and economic clout than the animal-rights lobby.
Perhaps in a strict Hindu society, where cows are sacred, or in a
society committed to animal rights, Professor Sprout would have a better
shot. But as long as she lives in a society that values the commercial
potential of milk and the health of its human citizens over the feelings of
cows, she’d best write up her research proposal so as to appeal to those
assumptions. For example, she might write that ‘Depression leads to a
decrease in milk production. If we understand the mental world of dairy
cows, we could develop psychiatric medication that will improve their
mood, thus raising milk production by up to 10 per cent. I estimate that
there is a global annual market of $250 million for bovine psychiatric
medications.’
Science is unable to set its own priorities. It is also incapable of
determining what to do with its discoveries. For example, from a purely
scientific viewpoint it is unclear what we should do with our increasing
understanding of genetics. Should we use this knowledge to cure cancer,
to create a race of genetically engineered supermen, or to engineer dairy
cows with super-sized udders? It is obvious that a liberal government, a
Communist government, a Nazi government and a capitalist business
corporation would use the very same scientific discovery for completely
different purposes, and there is no scientific reason to prefer one usage
over others.
In short, scientific research can flourish only in alliance with some
religion or ideology. The ideology justifies the costs of the research. In
exchange, the ideology influences the scientific agenda and determines
what to do with the discoveries. Hence in order to comprehend how
humankind has reached Alamogordo and the moon – rather than any
number of alternative destinations – it is not enough to survey the
achievements of physicists, biologists and sociologists. We have to take
into account the ideological, political and economic forces that shaped
physics, biology and sociology, pushing them in certain directions while
neglecting others.
Two forces in particular deserve our attention: imperialism and
capitalism. The feedback loop between science, empire and capital has
arguably been history’s chief engine for the past 500 years. The
following chapters analyse its workings. First we’ll look at how the twin
turbines of science and empire were latched to one another, and then
learn how both were hitched up to the money pump of capitalism. #money #science #technology #innovation #tech # # # #like #travel #tech #data #technology #innovation #ai #artificialintelligence #india #deeplearning #culture #work #markets #research #datascience #machinelearning #globalgiving #nonprofit

“You side with genocide,” chant protestors after campaign town hall question about RSS
By OFMI - April 2, 2019
LOS ANGELES, CA, USA—Approximately 25 demonstrators protested against U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) as she campaigned for president in Los Angeles, CA on March 30.
Waving signs reading “Tulsi, Prince$$ of the R$$” and “Stop Supporting Fascism in India,” the group included Christians, Dalits, and Sikhs. They distributed flyers alleging that Gabbard is “an ally of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The flyers explained, “The RSS is a paramilitary in India which was founded in 1925 and grew with inspiration from the Nazis and Italian Fascists. They have created affiliated groups all over the world. Today, they rule India through the BJP political party.”
“I came here because I want to preserve American values o freedom and justice,” said local Sikh businessman Harjeet Singh. “Foreign interference in our U.S. elections worries me, especially when it comes from India’s RSS and BJP which are responsible for massacring so many minorities in India.”
Inside the town hall event, which was hosted at the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, several hundred people gathered to hear the aspiring presidential candidate. “We will change the course of our future to one where we have a government that is truly of, by, and for the people,” said Gabbard. She promised to “bring the principles of honor, and integrity, and respect back to the presidency.”
After Gabbard spoke, she took three questions from the audience. Pieter Friedrich, an analyst of South Asian affairs, rose to ask about her alleged ties to the Indian paramilitary organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
“Hawaii resident Michael Brannon Parker says he has known you since you were a child and he introduced you to the RSS, a violent paramilitary in India,” said Friedrich. “Vijay Pallod of Texas is a leader in RSS-affiliated groups in the USA, and he confirms that he met you through Michael Brannon Parker. In your first two terms in office, you also met the RSS spokesperson at least three times. And you spoke at many RSS events, including two in India. When did your collaboration with the RSS begin and how much money have they given you?”
As Gabbard paused before answering, an audience member yelled, “Speak up.” She then replied, “I’m a soldier, and I took an oath. One oath in my life.” As she spoke, a demonstrator outside shouted, “An oath to the RSS.” She continued, “That was an oath to serve and protect this country, to put my life on the line for the people of this country.” She added, “We stand for aloha, we stand for diversity, we stand for peace.” While most of the audience remained seated, she stated, “Thank you everybody for standing with me.” Finally, she concluded, “It is this kind of attacks that are rooted in religious bigotry that we must stand together and condemn.”
“I didn’t mention any religion,” commented Friedrich later. “I asked about a paramilitary organization modeled after those of Italian and German fascists. Why is she tarnishing Hinduism by calling questions about RSS money ‘bigotry’?”
Gabbard’s event ended. As the audience left, dozens interacted with the demonstration outside. Some gathered to listen as several demonstrators spoke through a megaphone.
“I am a representative of the black community,” said demonstrator Jada Bernard. “It is sad to say that, in 2019, white nationalism is an issue for the black community. The diversity of America must be protected.” He explained, “In this country, white nationalism has a history with the KKK and other groups, and the RSS of India has been known as the KKK of India.”
Referencing the recent white nationalist terror attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, Bernard pointed out that accused terrorist Brenton Tarrant said he was inspired by Anders Breivik of Norway. Breivik killed 77 Norwegians in 2011. “This white nationalist said that white nationalists all over the globe should strengthen their ties with the RSS,” said Bernard. “So what we want to do is bring this issue of white nationalism to Tulsi. And we want to say, ‘Why are you spending time with the RSS? Why are you taking money from the RSS? Why are you speaking at RSS events?’”
“It’s sad to see Tulsi refusing to acknowledge the extreme violence of the RSS,” remarks Arvin Valmuci, a spokesperson for U.S.-based human rights group Organization for Minorities of India (OFMI). “We remember the most recent pogrom against Christians, in 2008 in Odisha, where even the Chief Minister of the state said that the RSS was guilty. It’s even more shameful that Tulsi, as participants in the protest told us, refused to answer any of the questions about her links to the RSS.”
The flyer distributed by demonstrators posed a series of questions for Gabbard, which included:
– The United Nations says that the RSS is an “ultranationalist” group promoting “Hindu extremism.” The U.S. State Department says that the RSS is responsible for violence against Christians and Muslims in India. How do you feel about the RSS?
– Why was BJP spokesperson Ram Madhav at your wedding, why did you meet him earlier when he was the RSS spokesperson, and how many times have you met Ram Madhav?
– When you met the BJP President in 2013, you got thousands of dollars in donations from Overseas Friends of BJP leaders. When you spoke at BJP banquets in Atlanta and Los Angeles, the organizers made calls from the stage for people to donate to your campaign and you again got thousands of dollars. Why did you allow a foreign political party to do Russia-style interference in your election?
– You released a video saying you were honored to be the Chairperson of last year’s World Hindu Congress in Chicago. The head of the RSS was the main speaker at the event. Then you quietly backed out at the last minute. You have spoken at many RSS events before, so why did you back out of speaking at this one?
– Why have you never made any statement acknowledging the suffering of India’s Christians, Dalits, Muslims, and Sikhs? When members of all of these communities accuse the RSS and BJP of attacking them, why do you frequently go to RSS and BJP events?

1. In Kenya, two Christians were recently pulled off a bus and shot dead for failing to recite the Islamic creed:
International Christian Concern reported on the statements of witnesses and heartbroken families a month after the two Christians, Fredrick Ngui Ngonde and Joshua Ooko Obila, were shot dead by Somalia-based terror group al-Shabaab for refusing to recite the Islamic creed.
"The armed Somali fighters ordered all of us to [get off of] the bus and produce our identity cards. They singled out three passengers and ordered them to remain down the bus as we boarded. They asked them if they were Muslims and if they knew the Shahada and the seven verses of Suratul Fatiha. One of them recited part of the Shahada and was allowed to [return] to the bus," a witness who wasn't named told the watchdog group.
"The other two kafir men refused to obey the jihad fighters and remained adamant that Christ is their savior and they cannot deny the Christian faith. They were shot dead."
2. In Nigeria, the death toll for Christians "continues to rise to catastrophic proportions" as radical groups continue their genocidal campaign:
The death toll for Christians in Nigeria continues to rise to catastrophic proportions as the nation seems helpless or unwilling to stop bloodthirsty Islamic radicals targeting Christians in the region.
This time jihadists—identified as notorious Fulani Herdsmen—toting guns and machetes slaughtered 17 innocent victims in one evening, including four young children and a grandmother.
All of the victims are said to be members of a local evangelical Christian church.
3. An American missionary that just moved to Cameroon was viciously gunned down in front of his wife and children:
An American Christian missionary has been shot dead in front of his wife and kids in a volatile region of Cameroon. Charles Wesco, 44, was killed when a volley of gunfire struck his car windshield as he traveled to a local store with his wife, Stephanie, one of his children and a fellow missionary. The ministry worker was rushed to a hospital in the city of Bamenda where he was pronounced dead.
4. In Pakistan, a Christian pharmacist recently died after a gang of Muslims attacked him with acid:
According to Asia News, Faraz Ahmed Badar was a 26-year-old pharmacist who worked at the DHQ Hospital in Gujaranwala. Before his death, he had been harassed relentlessly by a Muslim colleague, who was reportedly jealous that Badar was in a more senior position than him at work. The understanding was this—if you are a Christian, you should never be allowed to rise above a Muslim at work. And it was this prejudice that resulted in Badar's untimely death.
On Sept. 5, the pharmacist was preparing for his shift when he was brutally attacked with acid by a group of men who were wearing face masks. The suspects are still at large. Badar was rushed to a local hospital, where he spent 10 days before succumbing to his injuries and dying on Sept. 15.
5. In Myanmar, rebel attacks have "destroyed or closed" 12 churches, and some pastors have even had their heads shaved:
A group of rebels has set its sights on Burmese Christians in a fresh series of attacks, with devastating results. Over the past couple of weeks, Ethnic Wa rebels have shut down churches, destroyed religious buildings and even shaved the heads of local pastors.
Authorities Claim Christians Are 'Enemies of the Regime'; Attack, Detain and Kill Anyone Who Stands in the Way
17 Sentenced to Death in Church Bombings
The communist United Wa State Army (UWSA), Myanma's largest ethnic rebel force, launched the assaults in Shan state, according to Morning Star News.
"We confirmed that at least 12 churches have been destroyed or closed as of Sept. 20," said one church leader of the latest spree of attacks.
6. In India, the police recently stormed a church service on a Sunday morning and arrested 10 pastors as they were praying because "they had been converting non-members":
The 10 pastors were detained with their loved ones as they prayed at a church on Sunday in Uttar Pradesh, northern India, following allegations made by Hindu nationalist groups that they had been converting non-members.
Pastor Bahavan Ram was arrested after police burst into his church in Kariyabar in what has been described as a major crackdown on Christianity in the state.
7. The persecution of Christians in China is the worst that it has ever been in modern times. According to a British news source, "hundreds of churches" have now been demolished by government officials:
China has imposed a massive crackdown on Christianity across the country, with hundreds of churches demolished and Bibles banned.
Beijing's President Xi Jinping has previously labelled Christianity as "Western infiltration," insisting [that] Western ideologies ... [pose] a threat to the country's Communist authority.
In April, China's religious affairs department published an article stating all churches in country must follow the Communist Party's rules so that they are "Sinicized" (made more Chinese).
8. American Christians generally have it much easier than the rest of the world, but incidents of violence are becoming more frequent here as well. For example, a church in Seattle was recently firebombed with Molotov cocktails:
As a group of about 50 congregants attended a worship service at a Seattle-based church, an arsonist hurled several Molotov cocktails toward the sanctuary.
Witnesses told authorities they saw a person throwing lit bottles filled with an unknown substance at Iglesia ni Cristo just after 8 p.m. Thursday and immediately called 9-1-1, according to KCPQ-TV.

Ritual Murders: The Adrian Lim Case
Hello everyone! Welcome to another bizarre case study. Today, we will be covering a murder by a Singaporean who was madly obsessed in deities and the rituals that came along with them, to the extent of killing innocent victims and offering them to the idols as sacrifice.
Tumblr media
Two children were killed in the seventh-story flat, in Block 12, Toa Payoh Lorong 7.
Tumblr media
In the early 1980s, Adrian Lim, a charlatan medium seen by many as the very embodiment of evil, and his two “holy” wives (Tan Mui Choo and Hao Kah Hong), kidnapped, tortured and killed a pair of children (Agnes Ng Siew Heok and Ghazali bin Marzuki).
Background of Adrian Lim
Tumblr media
Born on 6 January 1942, Adrian Lim was the eldest son of a low-income family. Described at the trial by his sister as a hot-tempered boy, he dropped out of secondary school and worked a short stint as an informant for the Internal Security Department, joining the cable radio company Rediffusion Singapore in 1962. For three years, he installed and serviced Rediffusion sets as an electrician before being promoted to bill collector.
In April 1967, Lim married his childhood sweetheart with whom he had two children. He converted to Catholicism for his marriage. Lim and his family lived in rented rooms until his 1970 purchase of a three-room flat—a seventh floor unit (unit number 467F) of Block 12, Toa Payoh.
Lim started part-time practice as a spirit medium in 1973. He rented a room where he attended to the women—most of whom were bargirls, dance hostesses, and prostitutes—introduced to him by his landlord. Lim's customers also included superstitious men and elderly females, whom he cheated only of cash. He had learned the trade from a bomoh called "Uncle Willie" and prayed to gods of various religions despite his Catholic baptism.
The Hindu goddess Kali and "Phragann", which Lim described as a Siamese sex god, were among the spiritual entities he called on in his rituals. Lim deceived his clients with several confidence tricks; his most effective gimmick, known as the "needles and egg" trick, duped many to believe that he had supernatural abilities. After blackening needles with soot from a burning candle, Lim carefully inserted them into a raw egg and sealed the hole with powder. In his rituals, he passed the egg several times over his client while chanting and asked her to crack open the egg. Unaware that the egg had been tampered with, the client would be convinced by the sight of the black needles that evil spirits were harassing her.
Lim particularly preyed on gullible girls who had deep personal problems. He promised them that he could solve their woes and increase their beauty through a ritual massage. After Lim and his client had stripped, he would knead her body—including her genitals—with Phragann's idol and have sex with her. Lim's treatments also included an electro-shock therapy based on that used on mental patients. After placing his client's feet in a tub of water and attaching wires to her temples, Lim passed electricity through her. The shocks, he assured her, would cure headaches and drive away evil spirits
Background of Tan Mui Choo
Tumblr media
Catherine Tan Mui Choo was referred to Lim by a fellow bargirl, who claimed the spirit medium could cure ailments and depression. Tan, at that time, was grieving the death of her grandmother to whom she had been devoted. Furthermore, her estrangement from her parents weighed on her mind; having been sent away at the age of 13 to a vocational centre (a home mostly for juvenile delinquents), she felt unwanted by them. Tan's visits to Lim became regular, and their relationship grew intimate. In 1975 she moved into his flat on his insistence.
To allay his wife's suspicions that he was having an affair with Tan, Lim swore an oath of denial before a picture of Jesus Christ. However, she discovered the truth and moved out with their children a few days later, divorcing Lim in 1976. Lim quit his Rediffusion job and became a full-time medium. He enjoyed brisk business, at one point receiving S$6,000–7,000 (US$2,838–3,311) a month from a single client. In June 1977, Lim and Tan registered their marriage.
Lim dominated Tan through beatings, threats, and lies. He persuaded her to prostitute herself to supplement their income. He also convinced her that he needed to fornicate with young women to stay healthy; thus, Tan assisted him in his business, preparing their clients for his pleasure. Lim's influence over Tan was strong; on his encouragement and promise that sex with a younger man would preserve her youth, Tan copulated with a Malay teenager and even with her younger brother. The boy was not her only sibling to be influenced by Lim; the medium had earlier seduced Tan's younger sister and tricked her into selling her body and having sex with the two youths. Despite the abuses, Tan lived with Lim, enjoying the dresses, beauty products and slimming courses bought with their income.
Background of Hoe Kah Hong
Tumblr media
Born on 10 September 1955, Hoe Kah Hong was eight years old when her father died; she was sent to live with her grandmother until she was fifteen. When she returned to her mother and siblings she was constantly required to give way to her elder sister Lai Ho. Under the perception that her mother favoured her sister, Hoe became disgruntled, showing her temper easily.
In 1979, her mother brought Lai to Lim for treatment, and became convinced of Lim's powers by his "needles and egg" trick. Believing that Hoe's volatile temper could also be cured by Lim, the old woman brought her younger daughter to the medium. After witnessing the same trick, Hoe became Lim's loyal follower. Lim desired to make Hoe one of his "holy wives", even though she was already married to Benson Loh Ngak Hua. To achieve his goal, Lim sought to isolate Hoe from her family by feeding her lies. He claimed that her family were immoral people who practiced infidelity, and that Loh was an unfaithful man who would force her into prostitution. Hoe believed Lim's words, and after going through a rite with him, she was declared by the medium as his "holy wife". She no longer trusted her husband and family, and became violent towards her mother. Three months after she had first met Lim, Hoe moved from her house and went to live with him.
Loh sought his wife at Lim's flat and ended up staying to observe her treatment. He was persuaded by her to participate in the electro-shock therapies. In the early hours of 7 January 1980, Loh sat with Hoe, their arms locked together and their feet in separate tubs of water. Lim applied a large voltage to Loh, who was electrocuted, while Hoe was stunned into unconsciousness. When she woke, Lim requested her to lie to the police about Loh's death. Hoe repeated the story Lim had given her, saying that her husband had been electrocuted in their bedroom when he tried to switch on a faulty electric fan in the dark. The coroner recorded an open verdict, and the police made no further investigations.
Despite her antipathy towards Loh, Hoe was affected by his death. Her sanity broke; she started hearing voices and hallucinating, seeing her dead husband. At the end of May she was admitted to the Woodbridge Hospital. There, psychologists diagnosed her condition as schizophrenia and started appropriate treatments. Hoe made a remarkably quick recovery; by the first week of July, she was discharged. She continued her treatment with the hospital; follow-up checks showed that she was in a state of remission. Hoe's attitude towards her mother and other family members began to improve after her stay in the hospital, although she continued to live with Lim and Tan.
The murder:
Tumblr media
The first victim was little Agnes Ng - curled up in the fetal position inside a travel bag by the lift landing. She was discovered by a 25-year-old carpenter at the ground floor of Block 11, Toa Payoh Lorong 7, as he headed back home after a night out at the movies on Jan 25, 1981.
“They found the bag, opened the zipper and out popped her head,” said retired police officer S.K. Menon, who was then the officer-in-charge of the CID’s Special Investigation Section.
Tumblr media
He did not know it then, but the nine-year-old girl was the first of the two ritual murder victims of Adrian Lim, an unemployed 39-year-old who claimed to be a medium, his wife Catherine Tan Mui Choo and his mistress Hoe Kah Hong.
Agnes was abducted by Hoe at the Church of the Risen Christ in Toa Payoh and taken to Lim’s flat. She was injected with a sedative and then suffocated. She was also sexually assaulted by Lim.
A week after her death, either Tan or Hoe, called Agnes’ mother threatening to “chop” Agnes’ sister up.
But with few clues at the scene where the body was found, cracking the case was difficult, said Mr Menon. The pressure was truly on when the trio’s second victim, Ghazali Marzuki, 10, was found almost two weeks after Agnes.
Tumblr media
“He was just lying there on the grass patch,” said Mr Menon, 78, when asked how the body was found, just metres from Lim’s block.
Ghazali had been playing with his cousins in a playground in Clementi the day before when they were approached by Hoe asking for help.
Ghazali was taken to Lim’s flat, where he was drugged, choked then drowned. There were also three burn marks on his back and a puncture on his arm.
This time, there was a trail of blood leading from Ghazali’s body all the way to Lim’s residence at Block 12.
“He did not realise the body was dripping blood from the nose,” said Mr Menon. “The blood, that was his undoing.”
Officers cordoned off the area and searched the block house-to-house. When they got to the seventh floor, they found Lim, dressed in a shirt and pants, seemingly about to make a run for it, said Mr Menon.
“(The house) was very eerie, it was lit with amber light, and right in front when you go in is the altar.”
Tumblr media
Officers found various religious items in the flat, and on the altar Mr Menon mentioned, there were crucifixes and Hindu and Chinese idols, some of which were smeared with blood.
Suspicions were aroused further when a drop of blood was spotted on the kitchen floor.
Description of victim Agnes Ng:
Tumblr media
Agnes Ng Siew Hock was a nine-year-old who went to the Holy Innocent’s Chinese Girl School.
She was the youngest of nine siblings.
She was last seen alive by her sister Pauline and a friend at the Church of Risen Christ in Toa Payoh at about 4pm, on Jan 24, 1981.
She was there waiting for her sister to finish classes before returning home together.
Her body was found in a brown vinyl bag on Jan 25, at about 2.20am near a staircase at Block 11 Toa Payoh by a man returning from a midnight show. Adrian Lim’s flat was at Block 12.
Her home at Block 233 was not far away from where she was found.
She had been sexually assaulted and suffocated — it seems by a hand covering her nose and mouth.
According to a forensic expert during the trial, it would have taken her 10 minutes to die.
Description of victim Ghazali Marzuki:
Tumblr media
Ghazali Marzuki, who studied in Henry Park Primary School, was 10.
He was staying with his grandmother at Block 344, Clementi Avenue 5, on Feb 6 for the Chinese New Year holidays.
While at a playground with two cousins, a woman approached them.
She asked for help to collect some things from a friend’s house.
Ghazali agreed to help, and followed her into a taxi.
That was the last time he was seen alive.
In the early hours of Feb 7, Mr Fung Joon Yong, who lived at Block 12 in Toa Payoh, saw Catherine Tan stepping out of a lift, carrying a child over her shoulder. Adrian Lim was with her.
They went in the direction of Blocks 10 and 11.
Later that morning, Ghazali’s body was found near a hedge just in front of Block 10. The boy had been drugged with a sedative and drowned — his head pushed into a tub of water.
Burn marks were also found, but these were believed to have been caused by electrocution after he died.
Arresting the 3 murderers:
In a search of the area where Ghazali was found, police were led to the lift at Blk 12 where a resident had seen Catherine Tan with the boy. A bloodstain was found in the vicinity.
The police decided to search the higher floors.
More blood stains were found between the fifth and sixth storey staircase and the staircase leading to the seventh storey.
They decided to check the units on the seventh storey, the first of which was Adrian Lim’s. He was in the corridor. They spoke and Lim agreed to a search of his home.
It was very messy inside. In the kitchen, police found what seemed to be a bloodstain on the floor.
More police were called in to conduct a thorough search.
Tan and Hoe Kah Hong had returned by this time. Lim called them his wife and girlfriend, and told police they lived together.
A pair of slippers, shorts and a handkerchief — all stained were blood — were discovered. They belonged to Lim. A bloodstained blouse belonging to Hoe was found in a pail.
Pills containing the drug found in Ghazali were seized, along with a syringe believed to contain his blood. Strands of hair that seemed like Ghazali’s were found under a carpet and under a sofa.
Lim, Tan and Hoe were arrested and the next day, charged with murder.
Why did Adrian Lim and his accomplice murder the two children?
With Hoe and Tan as his assistants, Lim continued his trade, tricking more women into giving him money and sex. By the time of his arrest, he had 40 "holy wives". In the late 1980s, he was arrested and charged with rape.
His accuser was Lucy Lau, a door-to-door cosmetic salesgirl, who had met Lim when she was promoting beauty products to Tan. On 19 October, Lim told Lau that a ghost was haunting her, but he could exorcise it with his sex rituals. She was unconvinced, but the medium persisted. He secretly mixed two capsules of Dalmadorm, a sedative, into a glass of milk and offered it to her, claiming it had holy properties.
Lau became groggy after drinking it, which allowed Lim to take advantage of her. For the next few weeks, he continued to abuse her by using drugs or threats. In November, after Lim had given her parents a loan smaller than the amount they had requested, Lau made a police report about his treatment of her. Lim was arrested on charges of rape, and Tan for abetting him. Out on bail, Lim persuaded Hoe to lie that she was present at the alleged rape but saw no crime committed. This failed to stop the police enquiries; Lim and Tan had to extend their bail, in person, at the police station every fortnight.
Frustrated, Lim plotted to distract the police with a series of child murders. Moreover, he believed that sacrifices of children to Kali would persuade her supernaturally to draw the attention of the police away from him. Lim pretended to be possessed by Kali, and convinced Tan and Hoe that the goddess wanted them to kill children to wreak vengeance on Lau. He also told them Phragann demanded that he have sex with their female victims.
On 24 January 1981, Hoe spotted Agnes at a nearby church and lured her to the flat. The trio plied her with food and drink that was laced with Dalmadorm. After Agnes became groggy and fell asleep, Lim sexually abused her. Near midnight, the trio smothered Agnes with a pillow and drew her blood, drinking and smearing it on a portrait of Kali. Following that, they drowned the girl by holding down her head in a pail of water. Finally, Lim used his electro-shock therapy device to "make doubly sure that she was dead". They stuffed her body in a bag and dumped it near the lift at Block 11.
Ghazali suffered a similar fate when he was brought by Hoe to the flat on 6 February. He, however, proved resistant to the sedatives, taking a long time to fall asleep. Lim decided to tie up the boy as a precaution; however, the boy awoke and struggled. Panicking, the trio delivered karate chops to Ghazali's neck and stunned him. After drawing his blood, they proceeded to drown their victim. Ghazali struggled, vomiting and losing control of his bowels as he died. Blood kept streaming from his nose after his death. While Tan stayed behind to clean the flat, Lim and Hoe disposed of the body. Lim noticed that a trail of blood led to their flat, so he and his accomplices cleaned as much as they could of these stains before sunrise. When the trail of blood led the police to their flat, this resulted in their arrest.
Battle of psychiatrist in the supreme justice court:
No one doubted that Lim, Tan, and Hoe had killed the children. Their defence was based on convincing the judges that medically, the accused were not in total control of themselves during the crimes. The bulk of the trial was therefore a battle between expert witnesses called by both sides. Dr Wong Yip Chong, a senior psychiatrist in private practice, believed that Lim was mentally ill at the time of the crimes. Claiming to be "judging by the big picture, and not fussing over contradictions", he said that Lim's voracious sexual appetite and deluded belief in Kali were characteristics of a mild manic depression. The doctor also said that only an unsound mind would dump the bodies close to his home when his plan was to distract the police. In rebuttal, the prosecution's expert witness, Dr Chee Kuan Tsee, a psychiatrist at Woodbridge Hospital, said that Lim was "purposeful in his pursuits, patient in his planning and persuasive in his performance for personal power and pleasure". In Dr Chee's opinion, Lim had indulged in sex because through his role as a medium he obtained a supply of women who were willing to go to bed with him. Furthermore, his belief in Kali was religious in nature, not delusional. Lim's use of religion for personal benefit indicated full self-control. Lastly, Lim had consulted doctors and freely taken sedatives to alleviate his insomnia, a condition which, according to Dr Chee, sufferers from manic depression fail to recognise.
Dr R. Nagulendran, a consultant psychiatrist, testified that Tan was mentally impaired by reactive psychotic depression. According to him she was depressed before she met Lim, due to her family background. Physical abuse and threats from Lim deepened her depression; drug abuse led her to hallucinate and believe the medium's lies. Dr Chee disagreed; he said that Tan had admitted to being quite happy with the material lifestyle Lim gave to her, enjoying fine clothes and beauty salon treatments. A sufferer from reactive psychotic depression would not have paid such attention to her appearance. Also, Tan had earlier confessed to knowing Lim was a fraud, but changed her stance in court to claim she was acting completely under his influence. Although Dr Chee had neglected Lim's physical abuse of Tan in his judgment, he was firm in his opinion that Tan was mentally sound during the crimes. Both Dr Nagulendran and Dr Chee agreed that Hoe suffered from schizophrenia long before she met Lim, and that her stay in Woodbridge Hospital had helped her recovery. However, while Dr Nagulendran was convinced that Hoe suffered a relapse during the time of the child killings, Dr Chee pointed out that none of the Woodbridge doctors saw any signs of relapse during the six months of her follow-up checks (16 July 1980 – 31 January 1981). If Hoe had been as severely impaired by her condition as Dr Nagulendran described, she would have become an invalid. Instead, she methodically abducted and helped kill a child on two occasions. Ending his testimony, Dr Chee stated that it was incredible that three people with different mental illnesses should share a common delusion of receiving a request to kill from a god.
In their closing speeches, the defence tried to reinforce the portrayal of their clients as mentally disturbed individuals. Cashin said that Lim was a normal man until his initiation into the occult, and that he was clearly divorced from reality when he entered the "unreasonable world of atrociousness", acting on his delusions to kill children in Kali's name. Jeyaretnam said that due to her depression and Lim's abuse, Tan was just "a robot", carrying out orders without thought. Isaac simply concluded, "[Hoe's] schizophrenic mind accepted that if the children were killed, they would go to heaven and not grow up evil like her mother and others." The defence criticised Dr Chee for failing to recognise their clients' symptoms.
The prosecution started its closing speech by drawing attention to the "cool and calculating" manner in which the children were killed. Knight also argued that the accused could not have shared the same delusion, and only brought it up during the trial. The "cunning and deliberation" displayed in the acts could not have been done by a deluded person.Tan helped Lim because "she loved [him]", and Hoe was simply misled into helping the crimes. Urging the judges to consider the ramifications of their verdict, Knight said: "My Lords, to say that Lim was less than a coward who preyed on little children because they could not fight back; killed them in the hope that he would gain power or wealth and therefore did not commit murder, is to make no sense of the law of murder. It would lend credence to the shroud of mystery and magic he has conjured up his practices and by which he managed to frighten, intimidate and persuade the superstitious, the weak and the gullible into participating in the most lewd and obscene acts."
Judgement:
On 25 May 1983, crowds massed outside the building, waiting for the outcome of the trial. Due to limited seating, only a few were allowed inside to hear Justice Sinnathuray's delivery of the verdict, which took 15 minutes. The two judges were not convinced that the accused were mentally unsound during the crimes. They found Lim to be "abominable and depraved" in carrying out his schemes. Viewing her interviews with the expert witnesses as admissions of guilt, Sinnathuray and Chua found Tan to be an "artful and wicked person", and a "willing [party] to [Lim's] loathsome and nefarious acts".The judges found Hoe to be "simple" and "easily influenced". Although she suffered from schizophrenia, they noted that she was in a state of remission during the murders; hence she should bear full responsibility for her actions. All three defendants were found guilty of murder and sentenced to be hanged. The two women did not react to their sentences. On the other hand, Lim beamed and cried, "Thank you, my Lords!", as he was led out.
Tumblr media
Lim accepted his fate; the women did not, and appealed against their sentences. Tan hired Francis Seow to appeal for her, and the court again assigned Isaac to Hoe. The lawyers asked the appeal court to reconsider the mental states of their clients during the murders, charging that the trial judges in their deliberations had failed to consider this point. The Court of Criminal Appeal reached their decision in August 1986. The appeal judges which consist of Chief Justice Wee Chong Jin, Justice Lai Kew Chai and Justice L P Thean reaffirmed the decision of their trial counterparts, noting that as finders of facts, judges have the right to discount medical evidence in the light of evidence from other sources. Tan and Hoe's further appeals to London's Privy Council and Singapore President Wee Kim Weemet with similar failures.
Having exhausted all their avenues for pardon, Tan and Hoe calmly faced their fates. While waiting on death row the trio were counselled by Catholic priests and nuns. In spite of the reputation that surrounded Lim, Father Brian Doro recalled the murderer as a "rather friendly person". When the day of execution loomed, Lim asked Father Doro for absolution and Holy Communion. Likewise, Tan and Hoe had Sister Gerard Fernandez as their spiritual counsellor. The nun converted the two female convicts to Catholicism, and they received forgiveness and Holy Communion during their final days. On 25 November 1988 the trio were given their last meal and led to the hangman's noose. Lim smiled throughout his last walk. After the sentences were carried out, the three murderers were given a short Catholic funeral mass by Father Doro, and cremated on the same day.
The children who escaped death from them:
Before Agnes Ng and Ghazali Marzuki, there were a few children who came to the apartment of Adrian Lim.
The first one was lured by Hoe, she got a girl aged 10 to follow her from Toa Payoh Central. But Lim rejected the girl because she was Indian and the deity he worshipped, called Kaliammam, was Hindu.
Hoe picked up another girl from Clementi. She was Chinese. But Lim said she was too skinny.
The third girl she brought back made Lim panic when she called her friend on the phone, and told Lim that the friend had seen her being led away by a woman.
There was also another child who got released by Adrian Lim because she was told that “The gods do not want you”. She happened to be prayed over by a pastor who happened to be her teacher back then and was most likely covered by the protection and blood of Jesus.
Conclusion:
First of all, we have to make this clear that no religion would approve of human sacrifice except for Satanism. No god would appreciate suicides or the death of someone as a gift.
The Hindu god, Goddess Kali is a strong motherly figure in Hinduism and is well respected for her motherly-love. She is well known to ward off evil spirits and slay demons for peace to be in order. The demon Kali (which most people confuse with Goddess Kali), is source of the most cruel and evil demon in Hinduism. Thus, Adrian Lim could have been having delusional thoughts with the demon Kali instead of Goddess Kali.
Second of all, religious beliefs do impact someone positively and sometimes negatively depending on the influence of it. In this case, Adrian Lim was obviously the bad influence. Teaching false and negative things and bringing harm to people instead of good. No religion will ever bring harm to its own people.
Psychiatrists were brought in due to the hallucinated mind of the three killers and the different mental illness they were having. It is important to pin point if they were really affected by their unconscious state of mind or just for their own evil joy. Adrian Lim showed no regrets or remorse towards his actions and could even smile before the death sentence. It is hence also important to understand the different religious teachings and their beliefs to avoid misleading people into the negativity.
Well, rest assured 12-3AMProductions will be doing articles on the different religions to educate people about the different magic circle groups created by us humans. Of course, words are a really powerful tool which many people use to brainwash others and mislead them into believing ridiculous things. In this case, the murders’ reasoning by Adrian Lim and his accomplices was of total bullshit with the claim that the sacrifices were requested by God. Justice has been served to the victims and religion will never be a strong reason to escape killings.
Thirdly, we do want to mention about the punishment of these vicious murderers after they have perished in hell. They are not going to be given a chance by god obviously. And all of them will be going to purgatory if they had REALLY been converted to Catholic. Otherwise based on their skin color and nationality, they will be facing the Buddhism hell and accept the punishment there. Their pain will never stop even when they are dead, the worst pain is given by god and not in the living world.
That is all for the case on Adrian Lim, we hope that you all have gained knowledge and awareness from this case study and do remember to like and reblog. Thank you once again for the amazing support, we will see you in our next article and case :)

21YR OLD STRUGGLING FOR LIFE IN HOSPITAL - EXTREME BRUTAL ATTACK BY POLICE, MILITANT FORCES
21 YR OLD STRUGGLING FOR LIFE IN HOSPITAL - EXTREME BRUTAL ATTACK BY POLICE, MILITANT FORCES AND HENCHMEN SENT BY SERIAL RAPIST PALANISAMI ON KAILASA'S 21 YR OLD HINDU MONK || STILL 2 OF KAILASAS HINDU NUNS ARE UNDER ARREST || #JustForKAILASAsHinduNuns #JusticeForHinduMonks #ArrestPalanisami Video of the attack : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NtwTT0pafU Today, 13 Sept 2021, 10 AM, Sri Nithya Sundareshwarananda Maharaj, a young Brahmachari of the Nithyananda Order was brutally lynched by two State police officers of the Tamil Nadu State police department. This attack happened in broad day light, in the campus of the ASMT community, in their Salem (Aadheenam) monastery. The monk, being strongly rooted in the vows of Hindu monastic life (Brahmacharya), is a practitioner of Ahimsa (non-violence). Taking advantage of this, the police mercilessly beat him, with no remorse. The two policemen took turns, while one was holding his laptop which the police looted from him. The policemen also employed a militant terrorist to beat this young monk. Three state employees thus beat a young, twenty-year-old Bala-Brahmachari (celibate monk trained from young age), for almost twenty minutes. As domestic legal recourse has failed in India to protect innocent and non-violent Hindu sannyasis, Hindus are left with no other option but to seek international protection. The attack was instigated by anti-Hindu terrorist Palanisami. It was an attempt to murder Sri Nithya Sundareshwarananda Maharaj, and other Hindu monks and nuns staying that premises. The two officers and the accompanying militants were vulgarly expressing their intention to gang rape Hindu nuns – “where are the girls.” These state officers were henchmen of Palanisami who threatened the child monk, “How dare you put case on Palanisami.” Palanisami is a serial rapist who raped several Hindu nuns and raped two nuns this month. Using his political clout in the DK/DMK government he got the Hindu nuns arrested instead of himself. Sri Nithya Sundareshwarananda Maharaj was on his way to get the nuns out on bail. The police want to extent their custody as it allows the police to torture them and force false confession from the nuns. Palanisami attacked Sundareshwara maharaj through the state authorities to delay the bail of the Hindu nuns so that they may be beaten and broken in spirit and body for legally fighting this rape case. It is a shame that the state authorities have sold themselves to individual vested interests are are working for terrorists, while drawing the salary from commoners. The fact that the State government is silent on the matter shows that the State government is involved with deep vested interests in these attacks. In 1971, the DK/DMK in a rally stated their goals for the next decade – “destruction of [Hindu] religion.”1 All the while they have been doing it, and today again the DK/DMK are ruling government of the state. It is not a surprise that they want to kill Hindu sanyasis. The militant terrorist who attacked is a drug-peddler who openly acknowledged this in the video. The policeman also nodded in support of the drug peddler. It shows that the pathetic state of affairs, where government employees who are supposed to work for people, and not just engaging in terrorism but drug peddling. It is no wonder that substance abuse has increased in the State of Tamil Nadu, as state officials are directly complicit in this.2 Hindus in India, need to wake up towards this cultural genocide of Hindu monastic order in India. Hindu mutts (monasteries) and Hindu temples are supposed to be headed by trained Bala-Brahmachari. But the anti-Hindu DK/DMK terrorists who are heading the government of State of Tamil Nadu are appointing government clerks (sometimes those who are not even Hindus), to head Hindu temples, and manage temple rituals and worship. The anti-Hindu DK/DMK terrorists are looting Hindu temples and diverting that money to destroy Hindu temples. It is not the problem of State of Tamil Nadu alone. When Afghanistan was destroyed Hindus in India laughed
thinking it is a problem only of Gandhara (Afghanistan), we know what is the state of affairs in Afghanistan today. When Kashmir was attacked, Hindus in other states laughed and ignored thinking it is an isolated problem of Kashmir. Like this we have lost 56 Hindu nations from Gandhara (Afghanistan) to Kedah (Malaysia), all of which were Hindu nations once. For Hinduism to be protected Hindus must support Hinduism by practising it, and protecting it, and supporting the SPH Nithyananda Paramashivam and SHRIKAILASA by creating a Hindu nation on a sovereign Hindu land which can protect Hindu Human Rights and Hindu religious rights internationally and in India. There is no other way, because Indian state governments are the ones who are actively persecuting Hindus. If even a small minority Hindus support this non-violent religious freedom movement of KAILALSA, Hinduism can be protected during this century. Therefore, your support is important. Please condemn this atrocity on social media. It matters. #HinduLivesMatter

‘Spend as much as you can,’ IMF head urges governments worldwide (Reuters) Policymakers worldwide should embrace more spending to help revive their stuttering economies, the head of the International Monetary Fund said on Friday at Russia’s annual Gaidar economic forum. Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva did not give any specific economic forecasts, but made clear her desire for governments to up their spending and that a synchronised approach internationally was best for growth. “In terms of policies for right now, very unusual for the IMF, starting in March I would go out and I would say: ‘please spend’. Spend as much as you can and then spend a little bit more,” Georgieva said. “I continue to advocate for monetary policy accommodation and fiscal policies that protect the economy from collapse at a time when we are on purpose restricting both production and consumption,” she said.
States Brace for Armed Protests in Wake of U.S. Capitol Attack (NYT) Bracing for the potential of violent protests in the days leading up to the presidential inauguration on Jan. 20, state officials are calling up National Guard troops, erecting imposing fencing and shutting down Capitol grounds in response to the F.B.I.’s warning that armed protesters could target the capital cities across the country. A survey by The New York Times of all 50 states found at least 10 that are activating National Guard troops in their capital cities. The moves by state officials point to the growing fear over continuing violence around the country in the aftermath of the mob attack last week on the U.S. Capitol in which assailants supporting President Trump’s efforts to overturn the presidential election forced their way inside the building.
Mexico hits another record for COVID-19 cases (AP) Mexico posted a record spike in coronavirus cases on Friday, with 21,366 newly confirmed infections, about double the daily rate of increase just a week ago. The country also recorded 1,106 more deaths. It was unclear if the spike was due to the presence of the U.K. virus variant, of which only one case has so far been confirmed in a visiting British citizen. The country has now seen almost 1.61 million total infections and has registered over 139,000 deaths so far in the pandemic.
Maduro ally presses for dialogue with Biden (AP) A close ally of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said Friday he’s hopeful the Biden administration will roll back a “cruel” sanctions policy and instead give room for diplomacy that could lead to the reopening of the U.S. Embassy and the release of several jailed American citizens. Jorge Rodríguez’s comments came in his first interview since taking the helm of Venezuela’s National Assembly over strong protests from the U.S., European Union and domestic opponents. Rodriguez, extending an olive branch to the incoming U.S. president, said the ruling socialist party is eager for a new start after four years of endless attacks by the Trump administration that he believes not only exacerbated suffering among Venezuelans and failed to unseat Maduro but also punished U.S. investors who historically have been important in the OPEC nation. It’s unclear if the Biden administration will accept the overture or continue with the hardline policy of regime change it inherits. In the meantime, there’s no end in sight to an economic crisis that has sent millions fleeing and those left behind lacking basic goods, including gasoline, in a country sitting atop the world’s largest oil reserves.
UK shuts travel corridors and requires negative Covid tests to enter (The Guardian) Boris Johnson has announced a dramatic tightening of the UK’s borders, with all international arrivals to be forced to quarantine as well as demonstrate they have had a negative Covid test. After months of criticism of the government’s lax border policies, which Labour claimed were “costing lives”, the prime minister said he was tightening the rules to prevent new variants of the virus reaching the UK and safeguard the vaccination programme. He also underlined the desperate situation facing England’s hospitals, urging the public to think twice before going out at the weekend. “There are now more than 37,000 Covid patients in hospital across the UK and, in spite of all the efforts of our doctors and nurses and our medical staff, we are now seeing cancer treatments sadly postponed, ambulances queueing, and intensive care units spilling over into adjacent wards,” he said.
Now, really? Italy political chaos sparks dismay (Reuters) Italy faces political turmoil. That after former prime minister Matteo Renzi pulled his small party out of the ruling coalition, stripping it of a majority. Now it’s unclear what will happen, but it’s hardly the best timing. The country is mired in its worst recession since World War II. It’s also battling the second-highest death toll in Europe in the ongoing health crisis. Small businesses in Rome said leaders should be focused on helping them, not squabbling over power.
Undeterred by the pandemic, Hindu pilgrims gather in India (NYT) As India prepares to begin an ambitious coronavirus vaccination program this weekend, more than 700,000 Hindu pilgrims gathered to take a dip in the Ganges River on Thursday, the start of the Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. The faithful who traveled to Haridwar, the holy town at the foothills of the Himalayas that is the site of this year’s pilgrimage, said a dip in the freezing waters will cleanse them of their sins and provide blessings that extend through several generations. The authorities said that about 1,000 people had been fined for not wearing masks or maintaining social distance, but Sanjay Gunjyal, a police official monitoring the crowd, acknowledged the difficulty of trying to enforce the rules. “In a limited space, crowd management and maintaining social distancing is extremely difficult,” he said. “Their belief system was paramount and not the fear to catch Covid,” said Manoj Singh Negi, a spokesman for the police department monitoring the event. “That they got to touch the holy waters was the overriding sentiment.”
Damaged roads, lack of gear hinder Indonesia quake rescue (AP) Damaged roads and bridges, power blackouts and lack of heavy equipment on Saturday hampered rescuers after a strong earthquake left at least 46 people dead and hundreds injured on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island. Operations were focused on about eight locations in the hardest-hit city of Mamuju, where people were still believed trapped following early Friday’s magnitude 6.2 quake, said Saidar Rahmanjaya, who heads the local search and rescue agency. Cargo planes carrying food, tents, blankets and other supplies from Jakarta landed late Friday for distribution in temporary shelters. Still, thousands of people spent the night in the open fearing aftershocks and a possible tsunami.
Russia to Exit Open Skies Treaty, Escalating Military Rivalry With U.S. (NYT) Russia said on Friday that it was pulling out of a decades-old treaty that allowed countries to make military reconnaissance flights over each other’s territory. The decision by President Vladimir V. Putin to leave the accord, the Open Skies Treaty, matches an action taken by President Trump in May. The treaty, which dates to 1992, is of limited use to the United States, which has a network of spy satellites. But it has been important to European allies as a way of keeping track of Russian troop movements along their borders. When Mr. Trump announced the American withdrawal, which was completed late last year, he predicted Mr. Putin was “going to come back and want to make a deal.” He did not. And Russia’s move signaled that the country did not intend to make it easy for the administration of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. to reverse Mr. Trump’s rejection of a series of arms-control and military monitoring treaties.
In Uganda, Museveni steamrolls to a sixth term (Washington Post) Longtime Ugandan leader Yoweri Museveni won a sixth term as president with about 60 percent of the vote, according to election results Saturday, in an election that highlighted the many tactics used for decades to steamroll Museveni's opponents. While voting Thursday was largely peaceful and orderly, the campaign period displayed the architecture of Museveni’s 35-year grip on power: relentless and violent crackdowns, widespread arrests, and attempts to bar journalists and independent observers. His ability to keep deploying them, election after election, also has been indirectly bolstered by the billion-plus dollars his government receives annually in Western aid money, primarily from the United States and U.S.-backed lending institutions. The State Department’s assistant secretary for African affairs, Tibor Nagy, tweeted Friday that Uganda’s election was “fundamentally flawed” and that the United States was assessing options to respond. But, to many critics of Museveni, such statements are undercut by the U.S. aid money — totaling $936 million in 2019 — that just keeps coming. “The international donors, and particularly the United States, are the biggest enablers of Museveni’s authoritarianism,” said Godber Tumushabe, a Ugandan lawyer and activist. “They underwrite all of Uganda’s public services — health, infrastructure, etcetera — which allows Museveni to spend massively on a security apparatus and a network of patronage.”
