The scent of freshly baked bread fills the early morning air as Qin wipes her flour-dusted hands on her heart-shaped apron. She smiles, peering into the oven to see the bread loaves rise to their perfect shape. It is a good batch. Satisfied, she prepares to open the shop, sweeping and cleaning the entry way. That’s when she notices something across her little cozy bakery. A new sign stands – ornate, elegant, and definitely not there yesterday.

“Muffet’s Shop”

Qin has heard of it before. A patisserie popular in Old Hotland, with a capricious owner. Grillby used to have multiple run-ins with the gal, Qin recalls from the few times the elemental monster has spoken. Qin doesn’t understand why Muffet has decided to open shop here, but she can tell an act of war when she sees it. Ears twitching and tail bristling in irritation, Qin quickly unties her apron and storms across the street, ready to give the new business owner a piece of her mind.

Inside Muffet’s Shop, it is dimly lit, with the walls draped in velvety purple and black curtains. There are a few spider webs here and there that Qin can’t tell are real or not, but she still avoids stepping on them just in case. Qin walks onto the plush carpet, feeling something sticky under her paws, her ears twitching at the sound of a sultry hum.

“Oh my, we’re not open yet, dearie~”

The voice is soft, playful, but carrying a dangerous lilt. Qin’s breath catches when she spots the owner.

Muffet is standing behind the counter, her many hands arranging a set of pastries inside the glass case. Her face is sharp, softly framed by her silky lavender waves. Her dark eyes glisten with interest, her billowy lashes fluttering as she tilts her head.

“Ah, the owner of the little bunny bakery across the street. How precious,” she coos, tapping her sharp nail on the glass. Her smile is equally cutting, showing her fangs. “You must be here to welcome me to the neighborhood.”

Qin breaks out of her trance, scowling and crossing her arms. “Welcome you? I’m here to see what kind of nerve you have to open this place right in front of mine!”

Muffets lets out a laugh. “Oh, dearie~ Competition is healthy, isn’t it? Surely you’d enjoy some challenge in this drab town.”

Qin bristles. “You call that healthy competition?!” She points at the chalkboard sign above Muffet that reads ‘Try our newest honeyed croissants! Sweeter’s than a bunny’s cry~’

Muffets giggles behind her hands. “Afufufu~ It’s just a silly banner, little rabbit. Nothing serious.”

Qin’s tail fluffs out with barely restrained aggression. “I- I won’t let this slide! You can’t just waltz in here and steal my customers!”

Muffet leans on the counter, cupping her chin in her hands. “Steal? Oh, cinnabun, I prefer to think of it as… luring them in with my superior treats. Of course, I don’t have to steal your customers.” She smiles beatifically. “I could always buy you out.”

Qin’s shoulders droop as the breath is knocked out of her lungs in a cold swift cut. “W-What?”

Another giggle. “Oh, just a thought, dearie. There’s a lot of customers around here and only one poor little you. I’d hate to see you get overwhelmed, is all.” Muffet’s gaze sweeps over her, like a predator sizing up its prey. “Though, if you want to keep your quaint little shop… well, I do enjoy a bit of struggle.”

Qin’s stomach flutters as her face heats up. She hates that she can feel a twinge of thrill at the prospect of a rival, especially someone as alluring as Muffet. The way the spider monster speaks, with soft yet cold cadence. The way she looms just a little bit too close. It all makes Qin’s ears twitch wildly.

Flustered, the rabbit monster takes a step back, trying to drown the explosive feelings in her chest. “This- This is a threat! I won’t let you get away with this! I have the best bread in town, and I won’t lose to you!”

Muffet sends her a smile. “Oh, really~? Then I guess I have to try it some time today~”

Qin opens her mouth, then shuts it. Face burning, she turns on her heels, heading towards the door. “Gah! Just- Just you wait!” With that, she bolts out of the shop, with her ears pressed flat against her head. Try as she might, she can still hear Muffet’s chuckles trailing behind her, full of amusement and promise.

This. Is. War.
