Underneath the surface-level fear, though, Fal is even more horrified that you were still so kind. Even when he was failing at every standard he holds himself to, you didn't hurt him for it. Could he have stayed like that?

Gras

The resulting meltdown is ugly, even by the usual standards of Gras's rotten behavior. You saw the most raw, shameful parts of him, and actually tried to help— and it worked. He could have been better, and knowing that hurts like an open wound. He'll surely disappoint you soon enough now that he's back to normal, though, and the thought of losing the bliss of your love has Gras spiraling. He'll ruin everything on his own before you can take it away.

Murata

Knowing how vulnerable he made himself while not knowing any better doesn't sit well with Murata, at all. You were kind to him even then, but that doesn't make it any easier for him to process the memories of acting so clingy and weak. The stress of it has him slipping away from reality a bit— and doing everything he can to hide that, of course. He'll avoid you as much as possible in the aftermath, and fight every shameful instinct to stay by your side.

Mauser

The whole situation forces Mauser to face the previously inconceivable concept of life without Ashley's influence, and that turns out to be painful in ways he'd never have anticipated. At the same time that every little scrap of kindness brings him to tears (regardless of why you're offering it), Springfield can't help but feel painfully self-conscious that he's just entertainment to you.

Love1 — He picks up on the mind games quickly, and hates it. Love1 reluctantly knows that the kind treatment is better than abuse, even if your reasons for it are downright humiliating. It's unnerving to him that you can sense his discomfort so easily, but the only thing he can think to do is play into it in the hopes of gaining some edge.

F — Though he's plenty familiar with people taking pleasure in his reactions, but the reactions you're looking for are just plain weird. There's no pain and no cruel expectations, and yet, F is almost more uncomfortable with this bizarre kindness. He has no idea how to react, and the pressure is making him increasingly panicky.

Siegblut — The whole situation drags him back and forth between bitter shame over the mockery and humiliating flutters of happiness every time you go out of your way to treat him kindly. Even knowing why you're doing it, Sieg just can't detach himself emotionally. He hates what you're doing, but he's still weak to affection and praise.

Herme — He's bitterly opposed to the idea for the indignity of it alone, but once the cone is actually on, those complaints vanish. The dehumanizing, restrained feeling does things to the part of Herme's brain that doesn't want to be human. It also shuts off his brain a bit.

Belga — Good luck keeping it on him. Belga absolutely despises the cone, and will do everything possible to wriggle out of it the second you look away. If prevented from doing that, he'll have a frustrated, tear-filled meltdown instead. This feels like a punishment!

Murata — On pride alone, he despises it. It's insulting enough that you think he can't mind his own injuries properly, but this particular "solution" is downright demeaning. He's another one who finds a way out of the cone as soon as you're not there to stop him.

F — Can you imagine an attempt to make the shame cone sexy? That's what F tries, and it's exactly as pathetic and hard to watch as you'd expect. He's not doing too great with the concept that you want him to heal instead of be hurt more, and it's making him panicky.

Hokusai — The cone is a wise idea, honestly. If he can see any remnants of blood (as in, the unfortunate color involved), Hokusai can very quickly become a danger to himself. He's not too bothered by the cone, once he gets used to it, since it's better than the red.

He'll beg you to excuse Herme's failure— he'll be functioning as normal soon, Dreyse will handle his duties until then—, tense like he's anticipating punishment to come at any moment.

• Even when you make it clear that you really do intend to help, rather than administer discipline like anyone else would do, Dreyse is only expecting the worst. Your eager insistence takes him off guard, but he knows better than to question an order when it's given to him. Herme is surely too out of his mind to realize who's helping him, but Dreyse isn't sure if that's a blessing or just one more problem for him to worry about.

It's unnervingly easy to work with you like this, and the time and resources your status allow make the entire process far less stressful than Dreyse is used to.
