Rosario
Seres Produções is a MusicMap favourite. The Angolan/Portuguese label is a truly cross-cultural connection, bringing Southern African rhythms and styles into the European circuit with credibility and electrifying enthusiasm.
Rosario has been a long time producer on the Afro House/Kuduro scene. Initially releasing tracks through Mbambu Records and Tainted House Records, he is now a firm ficture at Seres Produções and so we were more than happy to get some words from him on his influences and experiences. Play and listen to a track from his “Our Roots” EP on the SoundCloud embed, then tuck into our Q&A with him below.
What sort of music were you exposed to when you were growing up?
When I was younger I used to listen to a lot of Kuduro and some other genres that were very popular in my country such as Tarraxinha and Hip Hop. But of course Kuduro was on the top of it because we would listen to it almost everywhere, on the radio, TV shows, and mostly parties.
When did you start making your own music and what was it like?
I started making beats in 2010 and it was just a bunch of noises which I couldn’t call music at the time because it didn’t have a structure to name it so. But it all changed when I got help from a cousin of mine (Bernardo Pedro AKA DJ Nax) who taught me the basics of Fl Studio at the time.
What equipment do you use now?
I started with the basics, just a laptop and headphones but then I moved to a bigger setup with a desktop computer and KRK ROKIT 8 G3 monitors.
Where would be the perfect place to listen to your music?
SoundCloud and Traxsource. All my released tracks are there.
What fuels your creativity?
My creativity is fuelled mostly by what I’m feeling when I’m happy or when I’m bored because there’s always something that I want to express and the best way to do it is through music.
What’s your favourite album of all time?
It’s a Kuduro one, “Batida Unica’’ by Bruno M.
What do you think the future of music is going to be like?
In the near future we are going to see lots of new producers trying to contribute to the Afro House scene inspired by some big industry names.
Does your local area influence the music you make?
Yes. Because I usually attend parties where I listen to some of my work and I meet people that like my music and encourage me to continue doing what I do.

Who’s your biggest local musical influence, past and/or present?
I never had any local references in music in the past because all of them were international artists. Though not being local I was influenced by artists like DJ Kent and Boddhi Satva and many others in Africa. Today I have DJ Satelite as my mentor and he has become a major influence in my journey in music.
What are the top things you’d suggest visitors to your city should go and see/do?
I recommend visiting the downtown due to its high historic value and eat some custard tarts, the famous Pasteis de Belém.
What’s the biggest challenge facing musicians in your country?
Proper recognition, when I say this I talk about the upcoming artists that are really talented and don’t get the support and help that they deserve. Sometimes you have to be part of an elite to get that recognition.
What are the best music venues and record shops in your city?
There’s places like Casa Independente, Music Box. In terms of record shops Lisbon has Carbono, FLUR and Loiue Louie.
Where in the world would you most like to perform?
Many places, such as Djoon in Paris, anywhere where there’s a Boiler Room party. My hometown, Luanda in Angola.
What’s your favourite track of the past six months?
You’ve moved from Angola to Portugal, when did you do that? We wondered if you have any thoughts/musings on moving country, the changes it entails and how if affected you as a person.
I arrived in Portugal in 2007. It wasn’t in my plans at all, my parents took the decision to send me to Portugal to study. This move kinda shaped me as person because it allowed to have a wider and better view of things as to what I want to do for the future and I thank them for that.
