After seeing Stubagful’s latest video, I am admittedly mixed.
His “Is Doctor Who Outdated” video to be precise.
On the one hand, yes, Doctor Who's long standing episodic approach might put it at odds with the rest of the streaming service originals. Yet on the other hand, what would we stand to lose if all of a sudden we went the all-banger-no-filler route? Is there a middle ground?
Hell, Classic Who had what were essentially made for TV movies divided into 4 or 6 episodes but each was still its own entity. The only overarching storylines involves a new companion joining or leaving as well as Trial of a Time Lord which, even then, had each adventure as a self contained adventure viewed by Six on trial.
I think that Series 1, for an opening season at that, had a good balance between an overall storyline and a myth arc with each episode contributing to what would eventually come:
Rose and The End of The World are pretty much a two parter premiere.
The Unquiet Dead sets up the Rift that would later be used to charge the TARDIS in Boom.
Aliens of London and World War Three establishes a lot from the One Year Jump to UNIT returning as well as Harriet Jones. You know who she is. ;)
Dalek... is what it says on the tin.
The Long Game isn't that obvious aside from Adam from the last episode but the setting lays the groundwork for the finale.
Father's Day is a character building episode for Rose and would be a part of the finale.
The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances establishes Jack Harkness.
Boom picks up where World War Three left off and sets up the heart of the TARDIS as well as show Rose and Mickey's relationship strain more.
Bad Wold and The Parting of Ways brings it all together.
Hell, if DW didn't get renewed, it would still be a satisfying self-contained narrative for the Ninth Doctor going out on a smile.
But then you have to contend with the fact that the Overton Window's been shifting by studio heads to order less and less episodes per season. 13 episodes use to be the bare minimum but now the 10 to 8 model is being shoved down our throats.

If I did a TOP 20 favourite 'BtVS' episodes,... a good majority of them would be from Season 5.
It has a lot of bangers. 'The Body', 'The Replacement' 'Blood Ties', 'Real Me', 'No Place Like Home', 'Buffy vs. Dracula', 'Family', 'Fool For Love' 'Checkpoint', 'Crush', 'Tough Love', ‘Spiral', 'The Weight Of The World', 'The Gift’. These are all fantastic episodes!
I also love the overall arc/plot. I love the character representation and development of both new characters and the ones we know already. The Scooby Gang is at their absolute strongest. I love the directing and writing and acting. I love that everything that happens in it is completely consistent and cohesive. Well put together in a neat little bow with its main themes and storylines. I don't think I have a single negative thing to say about Season 5. And that's saying a lot because I critique the fuck out of my favourite TV shows. You don't even know. I go HARD when it comes to art/ entertainment in general.
And then there's Glory... like I love Dark Willow. You all know that. But Clare Kramer as Glory is excellent!
Season 5 is peak Buffy. The very best of 'BtVS'.
What's more to say? I could watch it over and over and over again and never get tired of it. It's timeless.
I FUCKING LOVE SEASON 5! It's the best singular season of any TV show ever made. Yes. I said that with complete conviction.
When you look at the load of tripe we get today in TV or streaming service art/entertainment, you never get anything this well written, acted, produced or directed. I'll admit - yes, it's because shows are more serialized and compacted down to 10-12 episodes a season now... But for a show that wasn't intentionally made to be singular season serialized and 10-something episodes longer, you still will not see better written cohesiveness and consistency or versatility in serialized TV or streaming service art/entertainment today. It is that well done of a singular season and finale. It makes TV shows today a real joke and it's why I will always stick to the classics. I've stuck my head in every now and again to see what's what on streaming services but I've always been left disappointed - either because it's a load of shite or it's undercut before it really got good. Not enough.
So yeah, I put the likes of Buffy, Xena and Charmed on a pedestal because they honestly deserve to be at the very pinnacle of true art/entertainment production and storytelling and I will be adamant.
Not everything works or is of top quality and there's certainly episodes that have not stood the test of time and aged like fine wine. There is issues too. But compared to what we get today - yeah, no contest.

Rewatching Lost with A and rating our worsties Jack and John ♡
S1E22 - Born to Run
Episode thoughts: Poor Sayid being the only one with the brain cell in the first half of this episode. And Poor Kate - you deserve so much better our sweaty chest queen 🫶
My Jack rating: The one time I want to be on this man's side and he gets completely owned by John while they're arguing about keeping the hatch a secret. What a disgrace, 3/10 for dissappointing me the one time I'm actively wanting him to rip into John. But it was nice seeing him be a good Doctor to Michael, and for being understanding towards Sun and saying that he'd keep her secret. So for that I'll bump it to 7/10.
My John rating: "Since when do I report to you Jack?" God damn it John, did you have to be so right the one time I'm trying to back up Jack? I've got to give him points for gagging Jack with that, even though I'm not happy about it - 5/10
A's Jack rating: Jack, Jack, Jack, Jack. Love that he was in his little detective era; he said "who be poisoning whom?" Telling Kate he doesn't know what she's capable of when she literally drugged him the episode before - King. He's going down a full point though for knowing that it was Sun and actively letting Kate take all of the blame. Bitch. Wait no but he's going up a point for agreeing with John about the hatch and pissing Sayid off - overall 7.5/10.
A's John rating: Love that he had a little bit of an argument with Jack. Bald, loving it. Loving this bald and insane man. King. Kind of obsessed with his little friendship with Walt, kind of obsessed with John getting scared by Walt a little bit. John's getting an 8/10

A while ago I was talking to my therapist and I told her I was worried that I was creepy and invasive with relationships. She asked me what I meant.
I told her, "Well, when I'm interested in someone, I try and find out what they like, and if it's something I don't like, then I do a bunch of research and write notes and stuff and explore the topic until I find something I *do* like. And I'm worried that that's weird or stalker-y. But like... I've found a bunch of stuff I still enjoy after the interest in them has faded. So is that okay, or is it creepy?"
And she stared at me for a minute before saying, "That sounds very sweet of you, actually"
And so yeah
Self-perception and shit

Robot characters who are given names like SL-308-62 but instead of their human friend going Well let's call you Sally for short, they instead ask the other if they Like their current name.
"Do you like your serial number?" they ask. "Yes, quite. It reminds me of who I am" the robot replies. "I have heard others like me go by different names after some time, and maybe one day I'll choose one for myself, too. But right now that is my full name, yes" they continue.
Because it's not your decision to make whether or not the robot will receive a new name. It should be theirs only. What's the difference? One is more complex and the other is simplified. They were both given by strangers instead of themselves.
"62 will do," they conclude. "It's my model number - there will be no other 62 after me."
