When the Toymaker was recapping the sort of deaths of the Moffat era companions, I realize in hindsight they must have been very careful about how they phrased what happened to Bill, because Tennant could not have said "She survived. Her life was saved by her omnipotent lesbian space oil puddle crush" with a straight face. (Just to be clear I mean that as a compliment to the lesbian puddle. I appreciate plot points that seem earnest and heartfelt in the moment but sound ridiculous when you put them into words. That's what Doctor Who is all about).

no but seriously.... we all felt sick but it's such a beautiful representation of losing a friend. sure donna forgot the adventures and her character growth and the universe and YES OF COURSE it hurts but it also hurts losing a friend. you make a joke and turn around instinctively to catch a grin from a person who's 100% there only for you to see nobody. that's confusing, and somehow gives you a profound sadness. grief almost. you suddenly catch yourself at the thought of somebody doing something you're currently doing a specific way, or saying a specific thing. and every time it rips a piece right outta your heart. losing a friend is devastating and I've been screaming for centuries that media overlooks it in favor of the losing a loved one trope. but it is SO deep and important and valid. especially for donna and the doctor because yes, he remembered and it killed him times over, but she forgot. forgot names, faces, planet, but not the feeling of her best friend being around. that never escaped her. among other things, I love the return arc paid thorough attention to it.

I can’t explain why exactly but it feels like the church on ruby road combined the best of both the Moffat and RTD eras while also bringing something new to the table.

Like RTD looked at Moffat work and appreciated it enough to incorporate parts of his style into his own work to sort of make the show the best it can be for this new era and as a fan of both era’s equally I love that ❤️

So funny to me that RTD changed a fundamental word in the English language just to do a running joke to lighten up a horror episode. I hope that he keeps it like that through his entire second run and all the future showrunners will be cursing him forevermore.

“But We Love Martha Jones!” - The Doctor Who Fandom’s Selective Memory of Racism

Chapter 4 - Martha Triumphant?

I want to say the show and fandom have improved how they treated Black characters since what happened to Martha/Freema but it hasn’t. From the backhanded praise of Bill, to the allegations of Tosin Cole being a “diversity hire”, to the dozens of excuses of why Jo Martin’s Doctor being reduced to cameos was somehow great Black female representation, it's clear the “we love Martha” tweets aren’t enough. It's a chicken or egg situation where I wonder was it the bias of the fandom being confirmed by the writing or the writing confirming the biases of the fandom but would that matter? Freema’s treatment isn’t exclusive to her as so many Black actors have come forward about the racism they’ve experienced and the failure of cast, crew and fandom to protect them. Many fans blatantly said RTD had no responsibility whatsoever to protect Freema and how poor Russell can’t be blamed for how people read S3.. even though he wrote it… so I’m already sceptical about how RTD2’s Black representation will turn out. I won’t be extra pessimistic, but I’m not patting RTD’s back just yet. Hope however does come in the shape of Ncuti Gatwa, the first Black man to play the Doctor in the main lineup. Again, not patting any backs just yet but I hope Ncuti’s welcome and the welcome of the next Black companion after Ryan shows growth from 2007. A Black character admired and adored for what they bring to the table. No backhanded comparisons to whoever came before, no companion initiation arc and no consolation prize ships - a developed character given the same TARDIS etiquette as the others. I hope the history of the next Black companion, whoever they may be, is a kinder one.

I like to think that the 14th doctor sometimes goes to companion group therapy, and some of the companions, particular Ace and Martha, just yell at him while fourteen sits there thinking "yeah, fair enough honestly"

it did suck not having a “the doctor is high on regeneration energy” scene but ncuti is SO perfect as the doctor from the START that I am willing to let that go

But the minute you have David Tennant slip into Doctor Mode and say "Allonsy" and have all of his 10th Doctor-isms. I don't give a flying fuck if marketing and Russell T Davies calls him "14" he is the Fucking 10th Doctor Again Again.

"I don't know who I am anymore" Bull. Shit. You are the Same except older. Once More With Feeling. That's it. The differences now are that thanks to 11-13, TenThree is more able to be open with his feelings and communication than he was before. And he's actually close to ginger, which I'm shocked honestly we didn't get any acknowledgement of.

Otherwise, he's just fucking TenThree, Once More With Feeling.
