There is a cyclic tragedy inherent to Mori's character wherein he's actually a deeply lonely man, but it's mostly because his resolve to do morally reprehensible things and think of people as pieces on the game board is something he prioritizes over his relations with those very same people, and this inevitably pushes them away (for very understandable reasons). And it kind of sucks honestly because the most frustrating thing about Mori is that he 100% has the potential to be a fantastic teacher and mentor, and more than that, I think he loves it! Just look at Beast! But for as long as he decides he needs to be the one to make "the hard calls" to "preserve peace", then Mori will inevitably continue in this cycle of alienating all the people he has a fondness for.

I do feel as though Mori's loneliness is something he views as a necessary sacrifice that he is making for the greater good (and if he is so willing to sacrifice, then Dazai's unwillingness to do the same comes out of left field because - "what do you mean? you're supposed to be just like me!").

I breezed through "The Enterprise Incident" when we first watched it, apart from the glory of the Romulan commander. And, I mean, she absolutely is glorious, especially considering how so many single-episode female characters fare (esp in the dubcon scenarios, which I would consider this). Love her, love her power, love her being played by an actress who I'm pretty sure was older than Nimoy and Shatner, love the adaptation of the standard hot lady miniskirt to Romulan authority, love the camera clearly understanding that she's the hottest person in the universe without diminishing her authority.

The episode is definitely imperfect in some ways, but the Romulan commander elevates the entire silly plot and it canonizes Erotic Vulcan (and/or Romulan) Finger Touching.

But one of my favorite small character notes is also Spock buying time via Romulan legal codes that allow him to confess in detail for twenty minutes, so he just ... uses his own confession of his crimes as a filibuster.

Fics that make you feel Johnny Martin's gritted teeth firsthand. I loved the tenderness that can only be understood by someone in the same place of "stagnation." Especially loved the dynamics and aches that can only really play out in the role of an NCO. Johnny is tightly wound before, during, and after the war and Bull's there to release some tension. Felt like such a fresh way of looking at Easy. Arthur's Johnny voice is just so good. OUGH. I've reread it many, many times.

My dogs my beloved dogs!! The first line of beastial spirit vine soldiers from my LoK AU. Created by Baatar when during experimentation, he discovered the spirit energy after being condensed causes the vines to react strangely to machinery and processed material. Turning the inorganic to organic.

These soldiers are comprised of spirit vines that have mutated in reaction to the condensed activated spirit energy and adhered themselves to the suits. Similar to "mimics" in a way, they can conceal their mouths fully so they're indistinguishable from human soldiers, though very astute earthbenders may notice they neither breathe nor have a heartbeat.

Out of the three backgrounds and service histories Shepard can choose from. I always lean into Colonist/Sole Survivor for my writing because it resonates with me, partially because of real stories i can pull inspiration from and partially because I worry about writing a Mary Sue or an Edge Lord if I choose the others. Having two major tragedies in Shepard's life, losing her family in Mindior as a teen and her command on Akuze six years later, feels like it builds a character that can come back from anything and won't flinch at loss (and the dialogue in the Toombs sidequest is gut wrenching) I'm also just more comfortable writing trauma then most subjects.

I don't think that invalidates anyone else's choice nor do I think it's the choice. Mass Effect is about player choice so there isn't a wrong answer and there isn't a right one either. Heck I'm jealous that Spacer gets Hannah Shepard because she's such a fun anchor for Commander Shepard, a parent to be proud of them or child them over more renegade actions. Earth Born offers the ability to double down on renegadeness, play a paragade/renegon or even 180° from a scared kid in the 10th Street Reds to Alliance Hero due to enlisting. That's the beauty of them, you can do a lot with any combination of backgrounds. It's the player's choice at its finest.
