I've belatedly started watching Star Trek: Lower Decks, only a few episodes in but enjoying it so far.

This is going to sound overly specific, but the moment I became optimistic about the show was the end of the opening credits. Haha the ship hits an icicle, haha it's getting eaten by an alien, haha it runs away from a fight - but then the last shot is a classic Star Trek "Ship whooshes off at Warp Speed" shot, played completely straight. It's not undercut by anything, there's no gag where the ship zips back the other way immediately, or it's in reverse, or anything like that they just decided "Yeah, we can let this one just be straight up Star Trek".

It displays a level of confidence in Being Star Trek that I really appreciate.

i think relatively recently like as recently as last year my interest in fictional settings & fantasy shifted hard away from original creature design and spec bio and worldbuilding minutiae and more towards creating stories i find interesting instead and building it all out from that using allegory. the story with kettle and lucky is about funny imps but it's also about the "ethics" of consigning your best friend into a form of sexual slavery if doing so would save his life. ditto ironwall is about christianity and not centaurs. and siren is about the 'don't let me go near any bridges or tall structures or i'll jump' stage of doing a PhD

Brandon Sanderson: Fantasy vs. Sci-Fi

Almost all of BrandoSando's books straddle the line between the two genres, and after seeing @approximateknowledge's post here, I wondered how they would lay out on that chart. I was also inspired by this fascinating WOB about Skyward's genre. These are just my opinions, so let me know if you agree or what you think you'd change!

One thing I like is when an actor in a fantasy show/movie, or anything similar, clearly isn't very confident using early modern English so you can hear the italics every time they force themselves to say "thy" or "thou".

As the world is poised for the dawn of a new age, Kaya Cade is finding change difficult, trapped with the bad habits and people she’d fallen into as a teenager. But sometimes the universe throws an asteroid our way, or in this case a bark-skinned hunter Kaya witnesses plucking the eyes from a victim and now seems determined to claim hers.

Another child lost, tween Tenley Tych wishes for her mother to change, but that possibility is snatched from her. Alone in the woods she finds a woman calling herself Titania who promises her the strength and power to enact revenge. But at what cost?

And outside of town stands a lighthouse, miles from any ocean. Strange, and lonely, and out of place, much like its keeper.

Soon all these threads will intertwine and the world as they knew it will end. But who knows; maybe, after the end, it will all be fine.

Many fairy tales begin with a child. Rejected, broken, orphaned, then found by a seemingly magic being that will grant them any wish. Many fairy tales, and this one is no exception. Dreams are made into reality, but with it all comes a price, terms, conditions. And dreams can become twisted into nightmares.

This is a fairy tale, but not all is as it seems.

Sayuri Oshiro: Spiritual drummer (has a crush on Kaya, but Kaya’s oblivious).

Doctor Jana Sarkis: Former adventurer now head bio-engineer.

The Dibbles, Delainy and Daramy: Police detectives who may help or hinder.

Titania: A strange glowy being who claims to be a Queen.

Lilian and Ella: Titania’s henchwomen.

Klaus Ragin: Raggedy man who claims to be a knight.

Alvin Stag: CEO of Stag Corp, a subsidiary of Meridiem.

Pythia: An AI created by the mega-corp, Meridiem.

Meridiem: A mega-corp that has its claws in a range of businesses, politicians, and even have their own private military. Their headquarters is an enormous pyramid that moves about the ocean.

The Witch Way: A kind of hyperspace, but it is a realm utterly hostile to humans; if they were to find themselves within it their bodies would be twisted and annihilated while the realm’s inhabitants devour the unfortunate souls consciousness.
