Characters in Fanfiction!!

Unpopular opinion but I feel like adjusting a characters personality or how their viewed in fanfiction is alright to an extent.

Because most books, shows and movies show all the characters from the protagonist's perspective, so the character may be viewed completely differently to someone else, which works really well with Oc and reader inserts.

For example, Iceman and Maverick.

Throughout the movie Iceman is portrayed in a negative light, because Maverick sees him as competition, someone who doesn't think he is good enough.

This continues right up until the end where they see each other differently.How the qualities they hated before are actually really good and they have a shift in perspective, there we see Iceman in a positive light and this continues into Top Gun Maverick.

Preptober Speedrun Day 2

Hello writerly friends!

Yesterday we spent some time thinking about who our characters are, today we're thinking about their wounds.

Not the bleeding kind, although they could also count in certain circumstances. I mean emotional wounds, the kinds that influence our characters, even if they don't want to admit it to themselves.

By the way, there's even a book with loads of examples about this, it's called Emotional Wounds Thesaurus.

Think about things that happened in the past, and still influence your characters today. And remember: none of them are here to get a good grade in therapy and self-reflection. These things fuck up their lives to this day, and they might not even be aware of it.

Dealing with these wounds will be part of the character arcs, we'll talk about that more tomorrow.

This took freaking ages for my PC to render, but here you go: A nice big group photo of characters from my novel Irongate. Not all of the named characters are here as I haven't made models for all of them yet, but who we do have is:

At the back, Pythia - or at least the holographic avatar of Meridiem's AI. At the front are the kids; Perpetually pissed off tween Tenley Tych and her friend Jake.

A little character design exercise I was playing with a while back, attempting to fill a bit of a hole in the old folio. It was ultimately unsuccessful in its intended purpose of getting me a job, but as a quick exercise for my personal growth as a human it was wildly successful haha!

I think as a professional artist so much of the time I basically just focus on the art requirements right in front of me, so it’s good to take a moment and practice finishing something that is a) just for me and b) a little outside the comfort zone.

For these characters I was trying to imagine a character action co-op game that might pit these interesting characters up against a hostile environment.
