“I just realized something,” she said, and Garrus caught an interesting readout on his visor. Her heart rate had ticked up. He fought to keep his own from matching it.
She took a seat next to him on the couch and plucked the datapad from his hand. She tossed it to the ground.
“What’s that?”
Was he shouting, or was his response only that loud in his head?
“I have a break in my schedule.” A smile. “A two-hour break.”
They were in the middle of her office in the middle of the day. She couldn’t want… Maybe she just wanted to talk? And she locked the door so they wouldn’t be interrupted?
Garrus swallowed heavily, “Is that right?”
Shepard nodded, and then reached forward to rest her hand on the side of his face. Garrus leaned into the warmth of her immediately. If she could understand subvocals, he would have been embarrassed at what he was conveying.
“Do you want to do a little more research?”

Pairing: Female Shepard/Garrus Rating: T Words: 2.1K Summary:
Garrus has his head in his hands, taking a short rest on a half-empty supply crate, when he hears it. The idle communications console next to him suddenly beeps and roars to life. Her voice cuts clearly through the sound of static and explosions. “General, do you read? The comm tower is now operational.” It sends an electric current down his back that has him straightening as if a rod has been inlaid along his spine. That’s Shepard. //////// Menae and Garrus’s regrets.

Title: Sentinel
Word count: 6K+
Fandom: Mass Effect
Relationship(s): Shakarian
Summary:
Sentinel species - organisms, often animals, used to detect risk to humans by providing advance warning of a danger, most often environmental hazards. Examples include domestic canaries, historically used to detect gas in coal mines. Some species can act as sentinels because they may be more susceptible or have greater exposure to a particular hazard than humans in the same environment. –Wikipedia
Turians don't like the cold. –Garrus Vakarian

Excerpt:
The snow that was ankle deep when they landed here comes up to her knees now, and even Garrus is starting to have trouble wading through it. Shepard doesn't know how much time passes as they walk. Maybe hours. Maybe minutes. She can't tell. She can barely see her own feet when the looks down. The wind blows the snow around, masking their footprints as soon as they're gone. If they stopped, they would probably be lost forever. No one would find them underneath meters of thick snow cover.
Shepard looks around, searching for... something. She's not sure what. Anything that could help them out in this situation. Something feels off, but she can't tell what, so she just pushes on. Then she realises what's missing. It's been a long time since she heard as much as a single complaint. “...Garrus?” Silence. She looks back over her shoulder, momentarily afraid he might not be there anymore.  Her heart calms down a bit once she sees he's following her, albeit starting to lag behind. Blinking rapidly, sight unfocused, arms limply down his sides. He doesn't look good. He's shivering. He's wearing heavy combat armor lined with additional padding and he's still visibly shivering. “Garrus, are you okay?” He quickly shakes his head. “Crap, I… Did I fall asleep?” Shepard wrinkles her forehead. This is not good. She won't be able to find shelter if she also has to take care of a drowsy turian on top of that. A worst-case scenario passes in front of her eyes: he passes out and she has to physically carry him. An almost guaranteed death sentence. Unless she would be willing to leave him behind to save herself, the only way to ensure at least one of them has a chance to make it out. And that's when she realises: that's the worst-case scenario.

Shepard swiped her sweaty palm against her equally sweaty forehead to push back a damp lock of hair. ‘A little uncomfortable’ her ass. What an understatement.
3 bar.
“Gotta say I’m going to miss this planet,” she croaked. “I only almost died three times.”
“Downright relaxing by our standards.”
“Exactly,” she rasped—her throat was killing her, but it wasn’t exactly an opportune moment to grab another hydration pack. “Practically a vacation.”
“Personally, I could do with more palm trees,” Garrus said, and she caught the motion of his head turning to look at her as she checked the pressure reading.
0 bar.
“Shepard,” he said, the humor in his voice vanishing into an edge of alarm, “you’re—”
An explosion burst white through the viewport.

just… thinking about the tragedy of shepard and garrus. their relationship evolves as we watch - from mentor and mentee, to trusted friends, to supportive partners. the field between them evens out. walls are broken down. thresholds are crossed. she goes from ‘the best humanity has to offer’ to disavowed shadow operative to the tip of the spear in a probably-unwinnable war. he goes from eager-to-prove-himself hotshot to disillusioned outlaw to what’s probably the second most important person in the hierarchy.
it’s such a long way to come. there’s so much to get through to end up where they are.
and both of them only really come into power once it’s already almost too late to do anything with it. everyone else is also facing extinction but these two feel the weight of all those lives so acutely because of the positions they’ve been given.
but if they’re in love. if they go through all of that and fall in love in the process. if they open their hearts while everything around them is literally about to end forever. if he’s the glue holding her together and she’s the only hope he can still believe in. then they’re building their partnership in a graveyard. they both know, this might be all they get. this is probably it. and everyone else - they have it bad, but there’s just a unique tragedy here with shepard and her love interest in that she will save the galaxy, but chances are, she cannot save herself and that means she also cannot save the one who loves her more than anyone else.
these two people working tirelessly to stave off the end of everything, the weight of the galaxy on their shoulders and only each other to lean against, and they’re the ones who pay the price to end the war. they come all this way only for her to give up everything, and for him lose the only guiding light he’s ever had - at best, for a time, and at worst, forever. he might put the plaque on the memorial wall or he might not, but either way their sacrifice is so fucking heavy.
he holds her together until the end and she’ll use it to shatter herself on the citadel. she’s his guiding light and it’ll go out when the path ahead of him is at its least clear, its most daunting.
the war is won, but they’re the ones who lose, and it makes me insane just to think about.

Some people come to Omega out of desperation; some, out of greed; some, to reinvent themselves. A woman from Earth, orphaned and hardened by a life on the streets, came for just that; and so did a certain C-Sec drop-out. Jane Shepard never enlists, and Garrus Vakarian never boards the SSV Normandy, but some paths are meant to intersect.

Snippet from The Messages in Between Chapter 2. Garrus' message to Shepard during their six months apart. I broke my heart writing it.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: July 25th, 2186]
I’ve gotten more comm buoys out to increase the hard lines of communication. I will be pretty busy dealing with them and getting them up and running. Mom is back on Palaven. Treatments went well. She’s starting physical therapy. She’s really trying.
I can’t believe I’m actually seeing her walk.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: August 7th, 2186]
Okay, so I’ve learned from the best and started yelling. And the Hierarchy is listening again. My task force just doubled overnight and with more money. We have actual tangible stockpiles of food and medicine that could last us years in most of the colonies.
I’m finally getting somewhere on this, Shepard.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: August 11th, 2186]
Have you heard from Liara? I could really use her right now. The terminus system is giving us trouble on our comm buoys. I’m hoping she has a few contacts that could sort that out. She’s not answering, though. Remind you of anyone?
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: August 18th, 2186]
I’m this close to reaching out to Wrex for help. Maybe if I got him a bottle of Ryncol, he’d be cooperative? I’d save it for you, but we all know what happens when you get your hands on it, Shepard. And you know it would kill me. Wrex just seems like the safe choice for it.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: August 24th, 2186]
She’s in the hospital again. Spirits Shepard it’s bad. Something about her liver from the treatments.
I shouldn’t have hoped.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: September 2nd, 2186]
We just held her funeral.
At night, when the wildflowers bloom. An old Cirpritine superstition. Your spirit can’t reach safe passage without them. The flowers guide the spirits back to the grounds of Palaven for final rest.
I’ve never seen the fields fuller than they were tonight.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: September 2nd, 2186]
On Omega, I thought I was going to die there and be stuck to haunt that rock.  Not exactly a lot of flowers flourish there. Thankfully I had you to pull me out.
I wish you were here with me now, Shepard.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: September 5th, 2186]
My mom’s name was Laesia Vakarian. She used to design ships for the turian military. Mainly she designed smaller military vessels, but she was so proud of her work.
Did you know she wanted me to steal Normandy blueprints when I told her I joined? I’m only half-joking. She was pretty upset she wasn’t asked to be on the project.
She said the Normandy was something she’d always hoped for, a true invention.
She didn't care about C-Sec or that I quit.
My joining made her so proud. She said I got to be part of the symbol of the best of what turian and humans can do together. That I was destined to do great things with the opportunity. She was right. But I’m hoping there’s more we can do with the Normandy.
Her eyes lit up so much over that vid call when I told her I joined. That was the last time I saw her as truly herself.
I was so hopeful I would have seen that again. I guess that is what I get for being greedy in my hope.
I wish you could have met her in her better times.
She would have liked you, Shepard.

“Garrus.”
“Yeah Shepard?”
“Why are there rocks on the turian menu?”
Garrus raised a browplate. “Gizzard stones? All restaurants on Palaven serve them.”
“You eat rocks?”
“Not with every meal.”
“Garrus.”
He stared back at her bemusedly.
“Why do you eat rocks?”
“Is this what passes for polite conversation on Earth?”
“It would if we ate rocks!”

Sorry for the long hiatus my lovelies. I hope the now posted Chapter 14 of Palaven Rising makes up for it.
