Captain’s Log #2
At first it was slow going, then when we got to the open sea and unprotected waters it was much swifter. The wind is so much stronger out here and the current so sure and mighty. The boat it rocks and sways with the waves and now I know why my mother would rock me to sleep, it soothes me just the same. How strange it was to leave my home, and how much stranger that as it faded beyond eyesight I felt as though I was just arriving at home. That shoreline, the one I’ve grown so long next to that my soul holds the same shape, only to find that the real foundation for my soul is something that flows towards unknown horizons.
That’s how it all began, all cheer and sweat and salt spray. Windy days and calm nights, fish in plenty coming from the nets and enough rain for us to regularly replenish our fresh drinking water. There were enough clear skies to navigate by the stars and birds to know we weren’t too far from land. It was a sailor’s paradise.
Now I write this in a shaky hand, for this will be my last record being aboard the ship.
After weeks of ideal weather it took a turn for the worst, gales so strong that holding a course was impossible and rains that began to leak through to the lower decks. She is going down and I will soon have to brave the small lifeboat with what remains of my crew. The sea is tempestuous and prone to fits of anger. As if snapping my mast and tearing my sails weren’t enough, with one big swell she reached out and grabbed some of my best men. I wonder now if I will ever be able to tell their families what has happened to them.

We met Ishmael while we were filming at the Shirati hospital. He has lived with leprosy for over 40 years, and all that time has lived at the hospital. They are planning to move all the people with leprosy to a home in the village, so that will be the first time in 40 years that he will live away from the hospital . . . . . #shirati #majisafigroup #cleanwater #portrait #socialgood #instagood #canon5d #5dmkiii #nonprofit #nonprofitphotography#documentaryphotography #shallowdepth #newhome #leprosy #hospital #healthcare #portraitoftheday (at Shirati)

Shallow Depths Chapter 1
“The waves brought you this,” She held up the small instrument without looking up from her other hand holding the garment she was mending. The scent of cinnamon on the breeze and the shock of black hair in her peripheral vision let her know who it was.
“Oh thank you Mrs. Mercado, it’s been a long time since they brought me anything.” the younger woman replied as she took the item in her hands. ‘Not that it’s kept me checking the shores anyways,’ she thought to herself. It was long and smooth made of dark wood, it had golden coloured metallic rings around both ends and glass on each end aswell.. Holding up the larger of the two ends and looking through it everything was made to look far away and miniscule in stature. ‘What possible use could this have?’ the young woman pondered.
“I think you have to turn it the other way,” Mrs. Mercado offered still without looking up.
Turning the dark wood around in her hands of almost the same hue she brought it once again to her eyes. Everything now was magnified and looked to be up close, that’s when she saw it.
Bits of broken wood beginning to float in on the waves still far off the coast, all of it broken looking and beyond that a small rowboat being tossed by the waves. In the frenzy of their frantic rowing and pitching to and fro in the water she could discern what looked to be three men, one of them with red hair.
“Mrs. Mercado! The waves have brought us much more this day.”
The elder lady, set down her things and rose, shielding her dark eyes with a hand to gaze out to the horizon. Sure enough, a few furlongs towards the horizon her keen eyes could just make out the pale folk.
