DANCER OF LIES

Coming today hand in hand with Tsitsho, Fox, Dancer of Lies, seems to speak to me of both the Trickster lies associated with Tsitsho and of the Lies that we tell ourselves, the Lies that I tell myself. Trickster lies can cause trouble but they can also lead to creativity and wisdom. Wise Trickster Fox is always looking to take advantage and adapts to change better than even the other Tricksters. We can all afford to learn from that. I definitely can afford to learn from that. The second part that speaks to me is the way that we Dance with Lies even with ourselves, and always about ourselves. Tsitsho is a Wise Listener. She hears what is and what isn’t true, what is real and she seizes the advantage. The Japanese say that a person has Seven Hearts and Seven Faces. The First is our most public face. Each subsequent Face is more intimate than the one before it. But the Final Face is unknown even to ourselves. We Dance with these Lies always and even with ourselves. Fox tells us to stop and Listen. To hear the Lies we tell ourselves and know them for Lies. In these times of isolation many of us are trapped with these Lies about ourselves and, particularly if we are trapped inside with others, like Tsitsho in her den, we are also trapped with our Lies. The facade of these Lies can begin to crumble. That can be a painful thing. It has been painful to me, and the source of much of my Depression of late. But Tsitsho tells us that we can Dance with these lies and grow stronger when we hear them and see them. The facade crumbles to show us something new. This is the source of true Wisdom. That is what Tsitsho Dancing with the Dancer of Lies speaks to me. Fox has almost certainly been there in the woods, but tonight, as I walked with my friend Benji, I saw Fox, and Benji saw Fox. Benji wanted to dance with Fox, just as he always wants to dance with Coyote. His wagging tail tells me this. So, like my wise and crazy friend Benji, I will Dance with Tsitsho, the Dancer of Lies, in my heart and in my spirit, today and in the days to come.

PIG, KWÉSKWES - SPIRIT ANIMAL

Pig, Kwéskwes, is associated in many cultures with Abundance. But, for me, Kwéskwes associates most strongly with adaptability. There is a belief in biology that hunters need to be smarter than their prey and scavengers need to be smarter than the hunters. Pig is the ultimate scavenger and the ultimate example of when this is true. We can learn a lot from Kwéskwes. Unable to sweat she covers herself in mud to keep herself cool. Believed to be the great example of being unclean Pig is actually very tidy. With very few tools to defend herself with, Pig forms groups based around the females and cooperates to keep each other safe. Pig is sensitive and smart while being one of the toughest and most adaptable creatures on earth. And Pig also teaches us to look beyond the surface, to learn beyond what we think we already know. most of our assumptions about Kwéskwes are wrong. One of my closest companions when I was small was a sow who I simply called Pig. Because of that, and all these other reasons, Kwéskwes carries profound and positive message to me. To know Kwéskwes, to know Pig, is to love and respect her.

SHAMAN OF REFLECTIONS

Coming today in conjunction with Tsiktsinenná:wen, Butterfly, Shaman of Reflections speaks to me of the multiple meanings of the word Reflection. There is the Reflection that we see of ourselves in a mirror, some other Reflective surface, or in the eyes of others. This Reflection is always shallow and not fully dimensional, yet it can impact on us so much more than it should. We are all invested in some way in the way that we are seen, which puts us in danger of being nothing more than what can be seen. We lose our depth and dimensionality when we become ourselves Reflections of what those around us wish to see. Like Tsiktsinenná:wen, we are meant to be more than any one single thing. I often lose sight of this. And there is the Reflection that speaks of looking inward, and of pondering. The first action can lead to self obsession and an inability to see oneself as part of a much larger whole. The second action can lead to the paralysis of analysis. It is very difficult to take action, it is very difficult to just Be, when we are caught up in that kind of thinking. It is impossible to fly when one is grasping at knowledge. I find myself often caught up in that type of Reflection. I find it difficult, particularly in this time of great personal change for me, to just let go of who I thought I was and what I thought that I knew. Lastly, there is the lost meaning of Reflection: The act of Reflex, of Reflecting off of the world around us, of reacting rather than acting. When we become caught up in this we become very much like a mirror in that we have no sense of ourselves, no sense of the freedom and lightness of truly Being. Butterfly Is. That is part of her great beauty. It is the vivid beauty of Being. This is how she can be fly. By being attached to nothing else. By being lighter than the world around her. By being nothing else but Tsiktsinenná:wen. I have struggled mightily with Being. I have been too heavy in the world. Tsiktsinenná:wen, and Shaman of Reflections reminds me on so many levels, in so many ways, that I cannot Be while I am still clinging in so many different ways, that I cannot fly because my feet are so deeply dug into buried things. I have to let go. I have to fly. I have to Be.

HUNTER OF STRENGTH

Coming together today with Tsoráhsa, Ironwood, Hunter of Strength reminds me that true Strength is something that exists outside ourselves and outside our own ego. Alone we have only limited Strength. But we can Hunt for that Strength, we can draw on the deep rooted Strength that is everywhere around us. We must open ourselves up to this Earth Strength to See it and Believe in it. If we do this we can carry some of this Strength inside ourselves. In the way that the Hunter opens herself to all that is around her in order to find what it is she seeks, we too must open ourselves, to become aware. To feel the great strength of things, like the Ironwood Tree. When we do this, the bad things of the world, the sharp toothed things will break on us as they do on the wood of Tsoráhsa. We can become lost when we Hunt. We can even become lost when we Hunt for Strength within ourselves. But, in becoming lost, we can find things that we might never expect, things beyond our initial conception of what it is that we Hunt for. In Hunting, we pause by the Tsoráhsa, the Ironwood or Hornbeam Tree and draw on its deep rooted Strength, it’s great Density and Will. This Tsoráhsa Strength that we will find in our Hunt, but when we need it, it is there. It is always there, to be drawn on and found as we seek. Now I Seek, I Hunt for the Strength of Tsoráhsa, of the Ironwood, because it is what I need in this moment. Thank you, Ironwood. Niawen’kó:wa Tsoráhsa for being there when I Seek, when I Hunt for Strength, for your deep rooted Strength. Niawen’kó:wa simply for Being.

DANCER OF FRIENDSHIP: DANIDEE

“Out beyond ideas of wrong doing and right doing there is a field. I'll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass the world is too full to talk about.” ― Rumi 

This is the final reading that I did for Danidee. And it is the most obvious and direct answer to my questions. Dancer of Friendship speaks directly and fully of what and how it was that Danidee was. She was a Friend first and foremost. She was a friend to so many people and touched so many souls so deeply with her Friendship. Dani’s Friendship was beyond judging or mutual benefit. She wasn’t your friend for any of those reasons. She was your friend because she was your friend, fully, completely and without currency or rules. We, her friends were, are as different and as varied as could be humanly possible. Danidee shared Joy and Love and Laughter. There was no sense of judgement from her. Danidee’s deep light, deep Wisdom, was the light and the Wisdom of simple unfettered friendship. There were no gates or fences or doors around Dani’s friendship. Her friendship was the open field where everything can live. And all that she asked in return was that you Danced with her in your own way to your own music. That kind of friendship is rare and exquisite and courageous. What so many of us are grieving is the loss of that Friendship. But now it is us who must reach out to her. We must seek that field where she has gone and share our love, share the many things that we would tell her if we could. The field is not hard to find. It is filled with the Light. Dani’s light. She’s there. And she’s still here. Because now, as always, Danidee can be many things all at once and now she can be in many places all at once. She is not gone. She is not lost. We will not forget her. We cannot forget her. And if we seek her, if we but open our eyes, we shall see her. We shall see her Friendship, still there. And if we will but Dance with her Friendship, in that boundless field, we can still feel her, her Friendship, her Joy, her Love. And this new Dance need never end. So long as we remember. And I for one, will not stop remembering.

KATSIKHE'TON:NI, BEE – SPIRIT ANIMAL FOR DANIDEE

This and the following readings are for my beautiful friend Danidee as she passes into eternity’s sun rise: Bee, Katsikhe'ton:ni, in that it represents the joy for life, could not speak to me more clearly of Danidee. For it was he joy for life, her infectious Joy for Life, that defined Danidee even when she was in the midst of suffering. Dani’s Joy came from the Joy of others. When she made you smile it made her smile. When she made you laugh it made her laugh. That is why so many people, so very many people, sought out Dani’s company and just one of the many reasons why so many of us love Danidee. A bumblebee is not supposed to be able to fly, but it does. So it was for Danidee. When so many of us would have been crushed by the suffering she endured, Dani still shone so bright. She was beautiful in a way that only a truly beautiful soul could be beautiful. She was loved in a way that only a loving soul could be loved. And, as she moves on to a place where she is beyond suffering and pain, where she will be surrounded by love and joy as she surrounded others with love and joy, I know, I know with absolute certainty, that Danidee is living in eternity’s sunrise. She is flying now, as her spirit always flew in this world, even when it seemed impossible for it to fly. There is sadness for those of us left behind. There is pain. But most of all there is wonder and there is love. We shall never forget her smile. We shall never forget her laughter. We shall never forget her joy. And we shall never forget our dear, our beloved, our winged Danidee.

HUNTER OF STRENGTH - ALANA “Do I contradict myself?

Walt Whitman Hunter of Strength, coming as a sign with Tsikara’tanya’ks, Frog, speaks of a very different kind of Strength than most of us are used to thinking of, when we think of Strength. This is not the rigid Strength of a rock or the muscular Strength of a Tiger or a Bear. This is the Strength to Transform. This is the Strength to Change. This is the Strength needed to go from being one thing to another very different thing. This is the Strength to live in more than one world at the same time, to Be more than one thing at a time. Frog’s Strength is the Strength of Alchemy, of Magic, of the seemingly Impossible. This is the Strength that you must Hunt for in the coming year. And you must Hunt for it not in the world around you, but in the world inside of you, in the many worlds, in the multitudes of worlds inside of you. You already have this Strength. You will find it if you believe that it is there. You will find it if you believe that you do, that you can, contain multitudes. Part of you doesn’t want to believe this. That is why magic is truly lost to most of us. It is so much easier to believe that we are not capable, that we do not have the power, that we are only the things that we have always known and have always shown the world. Because if we believe anything else then we are responsible for our own Strength, for our own capacity to Transform. If the Tadpole believed that it was incapable of being anything but a Tadpole, it would never become a Frog. There is a reason why Tsikara’tanya’ks, why Frog, appears in so many Faerie Tales. Because we know that Transformation is a kind of Magic. Very very few of us will ever Transform because so few us believe that we contain everything that we need to perform this feat of Magic. Believing, Knowing that you contain everything that you will ever need requires Strength, because then you must also Believe, you must also Know, that you are capable of Being more, much more, than what you are at this moment. That is the Strength that you must Hunt for. That is the Strength of Frog, of Tsikara’tanya’ks. It is no easy thing. But if you Believe in it, if you Know this thing, then you will have Magic inside of you. FROG - Tsikara’tanya’ks - SPIRIT ANIMAL

This is for a dear and beloved friend, and it’s a day late. Your animal for the year, Frog, Tsikara’tanya’ks, speaks of transformation, purification, the ability to exist in more than one way, and of great, even magical, Strength. Frog’s transformation from a Guppy to a Frog, is a true miracle. It is only through the concepts of Quantum Biology that science can explain how the Guppy can rearrange all of its molecules to become a Frog. It isn’t possible by the rules of standard biology. It is only by incorporating the Quantum Mechanics concept of Quantum Tunneling, whereby a seemingly solid object such as the molecules that make up Collagen can behave as if they were not solid, and transform, quite magically, from being one solid substance to being another very different one. Even Butterfly does not match Frog’s incredible and impossible transformation from what is essentially a fish into an Amphibian creature that can live on both land and water. If Frog can do this, then almost any kind of change we can imagine is far more possible than we think. And Frog also speaks to the ability to live in and be comfortable in more than one world, in more than one kind of being. That in and of itself is a magical quality that very few beings on this planet can match. You may be called on to change in a very radical way this year. And Frog is telling you that you can, no matter how much you may think that you can’t. You may also be called on to live in more than one kind of world, in more than one kind of being this year. And Tsikara’tanya’ks is telling you that you can do that too. Frog is telling you that the impossible is possible. Frog is telling you that there is no difficulty that cannot be overcome, no tribulation that can make Being impossible, even though that may require you to Be in very different ways, in ways that you might think are impossible for you. And, finally, Tsikara’tanya’ks, Frog, speaks of Purification. For it is through Purification, through leaving behind old ways of Being and of Thinking, that you, like Frog, will be able to achieve even the most impossible Transformation. It is through leaving behind, and through the losing of what was that you can Become, a being that lives in more than one world. Frog, Tsikara’tanya’ks, is a powerful and magical being. She is the true master of Alchemy, proof that one thing can literally and completely become another, far more powerful and impossible thing. And Frog, for you comes along with a second sign, Hunter of Strength, which I will tell you about next, because Frog, Tsikara’tanya’ks, is saying to you that you are far stronger than you want to believe. And that you will have to Hunt for that Strength in the year to come in order to Become a Being that seems impossible to you at this moment.

Wolverine - Tsikenekerehetshotáhrhon: Spirit Animal

The toughest and fiercest animal in North America, and on the planet. Wolverine speaks to never surrendering no matter how overwhelmed you may feel. I have personally seen Tsikenekerehetshotáhrhon chase a black bear. Nothing makes Wolverine back down. She tells us, when times are hard to "Suck it up, Buttercup." Stop feeling sorry for yourself and get out there and fight. Tsikenekerehetshotáhrhon is also a very soiltary ghostly figure. Wolverine is happy to be alone and speaks to us about learning to be happy with our own company. It is a very rare privilege to see Tsikenekerehetshotáhrhon, though you can often hear her fierce and haunting voice. Wolverine brings that element of mystery and wonder into our lives. We can experience wonder sometimes in groups but we can only know wonder and mystery when we are alone. These are the things that Tsikenekerehetshotáhrhon speaks of to me.

A Friend's Reading Butterfly, Tsiktsinenná:wen

This is a reading I did yesterday, when learning of a beloved friend’s illness. I have not been as good a friend lately as I should have. I am deeply sorry for this. Tsiktsinenná:wen, Butterfly, represents Transition and Grace. Tsiktsinenná:wen moves from the earth bound caterpillar to a beautiful graceful thing of the air. In between there is a kind of stasis and the pain of transition. I am sorry that you must feel this pain my friend. And I’m sorry that I have not been there to share this with you. Nothing and no one ends. All things and all beings go from being one thing to another thing. Sometimes this is an inward transition. And sometimes this is an outward, physical change. Most often this transition happens both inwards and outwards. The Butterfly is always meant to be a Butterfly. Transition can leave us feeling fragile, frustrated and afraid. Change is never a comfortable thing. But, as with Tsiktsinenná:wen, the change can lead to something wonderful. Something beautiful. Something that is filled with grace. You were always beautiful, my friend. Even when the world has become ugly around you, you have always been beautiful. Just as the caterpillar is always, in all its potential, a Butterfly, this time of change is nothing more or less than you becoming your potential. My thoughts and prayers are with you my friend. Fox, Tsitsho – Spirit Animal

It’s been a while since I’ve written one of these. Tsitsho, Fox came to me today and just seemed to demand to be written about. Fox is considered a magical creature, one of the wisest of the tricksters by my Gandmother’s people, the Haundenosaunee. Fox adapts better than any other creature, even Coyote. Unlike other Canids, Tsitsho hunts alone, though she mates for life. In this time of crisis, this time of isolation, Fox reminds us that isolation can be a choice. She nurtures her family, and is faithful to her partner, but goes out alone to hunt. This allows her to keep her distance while she explores and allows her to adapt quickly to any situation. Wise Fox also reminds me that, though my life, like so many others, has been filled with trials, I can adapt and learn if I do not linger on my troubles, but focus on seeing and especially hearing this new world and the new opportunities that this new world presents. Wise Fox, when in doubt, stops and listens. And then she acts. She does not linger any longer than she has to. If the usual does not present itself she finds something to use in the new. Tsitsho is quick and fluid in all situations because she listens so well. This is a good time to listen to Fox, to Tsitsho, and learn from her agile wisdom. This is a good time to know that Tsitsho shows us how to survive, to overcome and to thrive when the world is not what we expect it to be. This is what I have heard from Wise Fox. This is what I have heard from Tsitsho.
