Am I the only one who's tired of the "Sly is afraid of everything but gets over his fears and does the job so therefore he is brave and interesting" bullshit? There's no actual character development for him. He's just there. Season 4 was setting up some internal conflict for him, but it got canceled. So i decided to write a list of all the internal conflict for the characters.
Sylvester Dodd
His desire is to be seen as a strong, brave man, and have people take him seriously. We see that desire when he sees his own obituary, and how brief it was. In the S3 finale, we see him writing an account of what happened on the island, and uploading it online, only to find out in the S4 finale that he's been writing and uploading false accounts of the Scorpion cases for years where he does the things Walter does. He is doing everything from Alderman to Lawyer, winning gaming tournaments and becoming chess grandmaster in his youth, and risking his life at Scorpion so that he would be seen that way, and be able to see himself that way.
His fear is of living in shame. We find out how that fear sparked in S1E10 "Talismans" when he tells Megan that his parents were frustrated by the way he was, so they sent him off to his aunt's house. His father was out on missions because he didn't want to be around him. He was constantly humiliated throughout school as a child, and he has had a lot of shameful moments in the show. From S2E19 "Ticker" where he drops the bowl because of a monkey and almost messes up the mission, to S3E14 "Sharknerdo" with the pictues of him in a wizard costume reaching Denmark, to S3E19 "Monkey see, monkey poop" where he sits out on the mission due to his fear of monkeys, and has a psychosomatic reaction due to shame and guilt. In S3E17 "Dirt seeds done cheap", we see the worst fears of the team, Happy is being rejected, Cabe is weakness and Sly is just ... chickens? No, it's deeper than that. In his childhood, a bully locked him in a zoo cage with chickens while all his class laughed it him. It was the most shameful moment him his life. In that episode, he experiences that same situation, that same shamefulness. Sly's biggest fear is living in shame and people being ashamed of him and not taking him seriously. All his phobias keep people from taking him seriously like he wants, and puts him in shameful situations for his age and status. I hate the writers for not focusing on it.
Walter O'brien
His desire is to be loved for who he is. We see that when he dates Linda. Toby tells him about the damsel effect, and he says that she likes him for him, only to find out Toby was right. Then When Tim dates Paige, he tries to become normal so that Paige would want him. If he's not gonna be loved for who he is, then he would pretend to be someone else. Then in S4, we see him continuing to do that.
His fear is of that same love. Every single time he has ever connected with someone, it always ended in pain for him. From Cabe to Megan and his parents, and Linda and who knows how many other attempts. In the S3 finale when Paige asks Walter how he feels about their relationship, he says he feels sick to his stomache. He is hopeful, but terrified. In the S4 finale, they prove him right.
His second desire is to save as many lives as possible. He wants to make up for the lives that were lost in Baghdad when he was a child, and he's willing to do anything for it, even if it costs him his life.
His second fear is of people dying because of him like in Baghdad. Whenever that happens like in S2E6 "Tech, drugs, rock and roll" he goes suicidal to save the people in danger. It's honestly so impressive that a character that was treated like a joke for the better part of the show still managed to be interesting.
Happy Quinn
Her desire is to have a family and experience stability, security and happiness. She grew up moving from foster home to orphanage and back. When she marries Toby, she starts spending time with Walter, Paige and Ralph as a family instead of Toby because she longs for the childhood that she didn't have. Later she tries to have a baby with Toby before they decide to adopt.
Her fear is of being rejected and alone. Her own father left her at St.Luke's when she was 2. She was the odd one out in the orphanage and no one would adopt her, while all the other kids were adopted. When she grew up, she was constantly on the move because she couldn't provide a stable life for herself. Until Walter came and did just that for her.
Toby Curtis
His desire is to prove that he is worthwhile, and gain the approval of others. We see this desire in S1E4 "Shorthanded" when Toby almost messes up the mission because he wants Walter's approval. And he keeps seeking Walter's approval until S2E6 "Tech, drugs, rock and roll" when Walter drains the oxygen from the room Toby is in, he faints, and when he wakes up, he comes to believe that Walter truly doesn't care about him. He starts seeking Happy's approval along with her heart he's been already seeking. Until he marries her in S3, by which time he starts trying to grant all her wishes to prove his worthwhile.
His fear is of being worthless. We find out how that fear sparked in S1E10 "Talisman" when he tells Happy about his past. He had a clinically bipolar mother and his neglective and unloving dad struggled to manage her illness. He became a doctor to help them both and failed, resulting in his crippling guilt and self-worth issues. Those issues are beneath the surface, seen in his little interactions with Walter and Happy across the seasons. Especially in S4 when he finds out about his sperm conditions and those fears resurface again.
Paige Dineen
We really don't see much internal conflict with her aside from the fact that she fears abandonment because her mother and Drew abandoned her. Which is probably the reason her character is so uninteresting and one of the many reasons Waige falls short to Quintis.
Cabe Gallo
There are two main internal conflicts with him over the course of the show. Season one has his internal conflict over the secret of Baghdad and how Walter would react to it. Season 3 had internal conflict with him wanting to find love again, and his fear of weakness.
Ralph Dineen
He's just there.

Ermanda’s Inner Sanctum: Scorpion 3.15 “Sharknerdo”
This is a really great episode for the cyclone in their respective circles.  Callie is heating up, Sly is gaining ground for his campaign, Quintis have a heartfelt moment with Happy’s insecurities, and Waige have a much needed discussion about their relationship.  Toby is annoyingly hilarious and time on the high seas feels like a scene from Jaws.  Developments in this episode share several parallels with past episodes.  For example, the tech for this mission parallels that used in 3.06 Bat Poop Crazy and Paige defers to Ralph’s forestry braves training to create a makeshift telescope in order to assist in a rescue as she did in 2.13 White Out with knots.  Let’s explore more, shall we?!
But first, here’s a song... Shark In The Water by V. V. Brown
Sylvester Dodd for West Altadenia Alderman!
Sly is really settling in his new role as a prospective politician.  He is so serious about his efforts to win that he cock-blocks Cabe to stop him from fraternizing with “the enemy” aka. Allie.  However, Allie helps Sly gain some ground in exposure by sending Patty Logan, West Altadenia Shopper reporter, to interview him.  Sly is so assertive in this episode during the mission and with Patty.  She gets a front-row seat to see what makes Sly a great candidate as she watches him work.  And it all pays off because he gets the endorsement!  I am really proud and happy for Sly!  I can’t wait to see more of his political journey!
Callie (Cabe x Allie)
YOOOOO!  This ship is on fire!  Someone call the fire department!  Cabe isn’t like the rest.  He isn’t wasting any time with Allie.  He has already forgotten his wallet at her place.  Allie is more than happy to pass by the garage to return it to him.  Cabe gives Allie a sultry look before they head to dinner.  And Allie went from shy shuffling to a swift, sexy strut when she walks towards Cabe!  Work honey!  And they are together just in time for Valentine’s Day! 😍😍😍😍
Song Inspiration: Heartburn by Alicia Keys 🔥🔥🔥
The Waige Flip Climax
A series of unfortunate events gives Walter and Paige an opportunity to communicate with one another in order to alleviate the tension that existed between them since Tahoe.  Up to this point, Walter and Paige have been busy trying to be civil with one another that they never took the time to renew their friendship.  This affected them as individuals.  But a moment alone on the high seas gives Walter a chance to speak his truth and Paige to explain her motivations.
Remember that Paige has implemented a new “sink or swim” strategy with Walter, one she got from her mother.  It involves stepping back and giving Walter space to use the tools she has provided and fail trying in order to learn to pick himself back up again on his own.  However, Walter expresses distaste in this approach.  He doesn’t understand why Paige would separate herself from him when he hired her to “hold his hand” as a liaison and because they are friends.  He even threatens to dock her pay.  However, we know (well, scratch that… I can’t speak for everyone cuz that isn’t the case) that Paige has no malicious intent.  Paige is not defensive in her response.  She clearly acknowledges that she has been distant on purpose, but explains that she did this because she wanted to try something new to help him since she strongly believes in his potential and the work she has done since she joined the team.
By the end of the episode, Walter realizes that Paige uses this tough love approach because she cares for him and his EQ development.  He truly admires this because no one has ever done this for him.  He even thanks Paige for making him a better man despite his flaws before he executes a plan to save her during their rescue.  These moments of revelation parallel 3.06 Bat Poop Crazy where he uses a story about parental abandonment and grief to introduce a different perspective.  It shows mastery of concept from an EQ perspective.  I will never tire of seeing moments like this from Walter because it adds to his EQ potential.  Paige learns that her approach needs an adjustment: she can give him space but should remain close for assistance when necessary since complete separation makes Walter feel isolated.  Thus, in return, she obliges to assist Walter (not hold his hand) during his apology tour.  She also establishes a restorative clause for their relationship.  They agree to renew their friendship and place their differences behind them.  The reason they are able to do this is because they share their perspectives with one another and learn from what is said.  Also notice that her actions in this moment parallel those in 2.23 Chernobyl Intentions & 2.24 Toby or Not Toby by innocently choosing their friendship over Tim.  Welcome to a new chapter in The Waige Flip!
I would just like to say that I called all of this before spoilers.  Yes, I am bragging on myself a little bit. Read the receipts from ermanda’s inner sanctum!  And it looks like the answer to my question, “who comes for Paige,” is Walter!
Side note #1: Once again Walter lies and sacrifices himself to save others and, by extension, uphold the greater good.  This is one thing that remains ridiculously consistent with Walter O’Brien!  And my heart soars every time I think about this.  Dagflabbit, where’s the tissue?!
Side note #2: Around this same time last year (starting with 2.14 Sun of a Gun), Walter conducted an experiment to sharpen his social skills using speed dating.  We met Linda whom Walter dated for a short time.  Yet, it felt like Walter was subconsciously preparing himself for the true object of his desire.  And Paige wasn’t feeling it when Happy questioned her about it.  AH… parallels!
Walter & Happy: Robotic Parallels
I find it interesting that Walter states he can recognize when someone is distancing him/herself from him even though he has no EQ.  He first said low and then shifted to none, nada, zilch, zero! 😂  Yet, he proceeds to recall moments from his past, expressing how he feels about isolation.  His assessment of his EQ ability contradicts his actions in that moment.  This is important because it is a clear picture of a low-EQ genius who is capable of expressing visceral emotion but can not recognize the depth of his own ability even though it is not a part of his usual nature.  We see another example of this with Happy Quinn in 3.11 Wreck the Halls when she explains that the purpose of her gift is to give him positive reinforcement because can’t always give it to him.  It makes me wonder how many ways this will be revealed to the audience this season and future ones and when these characters will accept and acknowledge this the more it is revealed to them by others over time.
Quintis & Happy’s Vulnerability
At the beginning of that end scene, the line, “pirates chase treasure; gamblers chase money,” makes one think that she is going to question Toby about gambling like she did in 2.18 The Fast & The Nerdiest.  But it transitions to this: “So what if it’s the chase that’s kept you on your toes with me?  Once we’re married, the chase is over, the high is over, and then you’ll get bored.”  Can I get a what the what?!  Happy Quinn is so in love with Toby Curtis that she worries she will lose him once they’re comfortably married.  I am always floored by Happy’s vulnerability because it shows growth.  Happy Quinn never ceases to amaze me!  Granted, a visible touch of the face would have been a great addition to this scene, but I am overjoyed by Happy’s smirk!  And this honeymoon wardrobe is growing but it’s Happy who adds to the festivities this time!  Btw, can we all agree that Toby appreciates the booty?!  He has admired Happy’s behind at least once every season (1.09 Rogue Element, 2.05 Super Fun Guys, & now 3.15 Sharknerdo)!
Again... Toby, You Good?
You had two gambling mentions thrown at you and you were disappointed about no contingency pay for breach of contract.  So when are you gonna tell us about the depth of your personal woes?  Do you need someone to come for the “University of Bruno?”  I patiently await your response.
I wonder if Toby’s approach to his issue will parallel Happy’s approach with her secret from last season in the sense that he doesn’t disclose full details because he’s trying to protect Happy and the team.  Remember it’s different for him because he tells Happy that he still has gambling debts, but he doesn’t disclose the depth of his financial woes.  There are things we still do not know.  Hmm...  So intrigued by the foreshadowing of these developments.
Drabbles...
I am advocate for proper designations.  Why did Joan Davis refer to Toby as Mr. Curtis?!  That’s Dr. Curtis honey!  Don’t get it twisted even though Toby is being quite the annoying man child.  And now I sound like Happy in 2.24. 😂😂😂
Toby: Maybe [Walter & Paige] turned their treasure ship into a love boat. You know what I’m sayin’? Open water, no one around, Tim in Qatar.  Happy: Zip it, Toby. Quit clowning around. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Happy is so not having it with Toby and his jokes!  She constantly keeps him in check!  Love it! 😜😂😂😂
Walter and Paige managed to find new shoes once they hit the water! 👀😂😂😂
T: How do you know that?  Cabe: I was a marine... as in mariner, maritime, related to the sea.  T: I don’t like condescending Cabe. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Paige: What?!  Walter: You heard me.  P: You must have sun stroke.  W: Oh, I-I... yeah, fact stroke. The fact that I’m afflicted with low EQ.  P: Tell me something I don’t know.  Me: Oh snap! This is getting good. 😯👀
H: Sly, I got the buoyancy data!  Sly: (stares at writing pad, then looks at Happy) Let’s do some math.  Me: YAAAAAASSSS! 😂😂😂
As much as I loved seeing Toby save Walter “pirate style,” a part of me is still wondering when these guys got all their upper body strength.  Is Toby still boxing?  Is Walter working out and we don’t know it yet?
If you look closely, you can see the microphone wire outlined in Eddie’s jacket during the end Quintis scene. 😉
T: You are the treasure that I have been hunting for my entire life... You keep me on my heels. I’m never gonna be bored by you.  H: Good.  Me: *swoons forever* 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I love Happy in a jean jacket!  It’s Toby-esque and it symbolically fits her mannerisms in this episode.  If you’ve been following these reviews, then you’re already familiar with my jacket theory for Happy Quinn.  A jean jacket is firm, yet breathable.  It has more movement than a leather jacket.  That’s what we see in the episode: focused during the mission, but open and vulnerable with Toby.
The look Walter gives Paige when she sits next to him... 👀😍😍😍😍😍😍

...and here it is... the scene(s)/episode that everyone has been waiting for. The    moment when things are finally communicated, and Walter tells it as it is.
MAJOR SPOILERS! REALLY GOOD STUFF!
my thoughts under the cut
I loved this weeks TBBT episode (ep 10x14) with Sheldon & his “emotions reading machine” and Amy’s words and “attitude” about his hardships in the human emotions field. And I’ve wanted this show to have get to the point where Walt’s friends/team-members see things that way and say things like that.
And I love this “Scorpion” episode because of what Walter says. I admitted last week that for a while I did not completely understand where they are taking the Walter plot and where it is all leading and what it all means, I kind of understood after seeing episode 3x14...when things finally made complete sense to me. I wrote about it a bit in this post. And I am so proud of Walter (and the writers) for finally getting the story to this point, and having him say what he says on that raft.
I am so proud of Walter. It is about time that the EQ person had a small lecture on THEIR “ATTITUDE”, and take a look in the mirror. And this is why I am excited for this episode (because while it is Quintis-light...because she’s at the Garage & he is at the sea, and they only have scenes together in the beginning/end of the episode & otherwise only communicate via comms) there is some really good Walter stuff. I’m not talking about romance - i don’t care for that. I’m talking about the “low EQ” plot related stuff.
I would say that it was worth the wait... and all the "weird stuf” and all the scenes/things in S3 have lead us here...and I personally think that it was worth the wait. Because I get to hear Walter say THAT! #fact-stroke

Random thought...
We usually only see Toby doing medical things. Glad tonight's episode had him doing a crazy Tarzan-esque move to save Mr. 197

Sneek peek 2 Toby comes in being his usual goofy self. I got to the admiring and referring to Happy’s ass ‘booty’ and I was gone. actual tears of laughter. Purely for Toby and his pirate hat I think I am going to enjoy this ep immensely. 😂 😂 😂

Do you think that Paige will finally say something to Walter after his speech or someone will interupt them?I think if the writers do this will be very disappointing. We hear Walter says some things he has to say about Paige's behaviour but i would like to hear her point of view for her relationship with Walter. Why she treated this way what she thinks. We don't know what she thinks at all this season both for her relationship with Tim and Walter.
Hello anon!
I suppose you have already seen the sneak peek for 3.15 that was recently released by Yahoo TV.
Given the show’s format, I am not expecting an extended conversation.  However, I hope that Paige and Walter go ALL IN!!!  The sneak peek shows that Paige is more shocked by Walter’s words and doesn’t say much in response.  Yet, I hope she takes the time to share her perspective outside the scope of the day’s events.  Even though Paige has been struggling with her hesitations and Walter with his consistency for EQ lessons he has already learned, they have spent so much time just trying to remain civil after what happened in Tahoe that they didn’t renew their friendship in the midst of being professional colleagues.  They no longer communicate in that regard.  Plus, I am excited to see Walter not just approach from a factual standpoint but from an emotional one as well.
I sense this is the beginning of the climax for the Waige flip this season!  Exciting stuff!

SCORPION 3x15 SNEAK PEEK
TRANSCRIPT OF THE SNEAK PEEK SCENE:
Joan: I’m sorry, gentlemen. I'm not leaving this spot, because of a communication failure. Im sure your crew is fine.
Cabe: I don’t care if you’re sure. I need to be sure.
Toby: Walter O’Brien is not some lake who just drops out of contact with his Team. It’s completely out of character.
Cabe: We need to go find our friends now. My call.

Walter & Paige in every episode: 3x15 “Sharknerdo”
- I'd... I'd like for us just to acknowledge that we're great friends, special friends, who care deeply about each other, the-the kind of friends who'd do anything for each other, including... risk their lives. - That's... That's accurate and logical. Yeah. I like it.
