The Bear - Claire of it all
I was rewatching the Bear and its kinda crazy the way Claire always forces herself on Carmy all the damn time (when she asked Fak for Carmy's real number when clearly the dude gave you a fake one for a reason or again forcing herself to the back kitchen when he got locked in the walk in when Fak told her it wasn't a good moment, timing or even during Carmy's panic attack scene, she forces herself in his mind, in his life so much that he believes that she would help him calm down....when we both know who truly is able to do that) and yk what's even crazier, the way the writers (who are geniuses btw so imo they really did this on purpose and for a reason) wrote her character in a way where as watchers we almost feel like we can't NOT love her, that by doing so we lowkey suck and we're a bit weird bcs not only Carmy's entourage (Nat, Richie & Fak) keeps insisting how good and great she is for him but also the girl seems to be, emphasises on seems, perfect for Carmy. She is the girl he used to fancy, his long time crush, she is pretty, intelligent, super easy going and ready to take all the steps needed to get to Carmy. He doesn't have to do anything almost for her to get into his life. She is easy and good and perfect so we should feel bad for not liking her, for not wanting her for him when everyone around Carmy thinks so of her and doesn't miss a chance to throw it right into our (and Carmy's) face all the fucking time. All the fucking time.
And so for me, it is written like that for a reason.
However we also see that Carmy starts losing his focus the moment she comes back into his life and best believe, I think he felt it, i think he knew and that is why he gave her a fake number bcs deep down he had a certain understanding that she was not perfect for the person he wants to become, he started to become but guess what, she forces herself and his entourage (Fak his best friend lol remember how carmy is a bit ???? When she tells him that thru the phone) thinks this might be good for him, she is the person Carmy always wanted so they think they are helping but they are wrong and they dont know and they dont see how he is eager to envolve bcs he doesn't show it much with them, he is not as open and human with them like he is with Syd. Besides, Carmy also has the tendancy to let things happen to him too, he kinda likes having it easy regarding all the other parts of his life (other than his job) so he just goes with the flow and so Carmy stops changing the sec he meets her again.
He stops and misses the opportunity to grow and envolve and find his purpose and I know deep down he knows and that is why all of their scenes kinda feels off. He knows deep down, not up front but we know with how their interactions are shown to us.
Claire is perfect for the Carmy from the past. She is perfect for the person he used to be and not for the one he thrives to become and so I am very excited to see how they're gonna play that for season 3 especially after she told him she loves him.

what pains me the most about killing eve is how wrong the writers got everything. how they think that obsession is purely toxic and can’t be romantic in any way. that eve’s path into darkness was always doomed bc villanelle would be involved and that somehow villanelle would end up killing her or both of them. going back and forth over meaningless storylines for canon fodder. villanelle can’t go a day without thinking about eve, eve can’t go a moment without thinking about villanelle. it’s a vicious cycle and yet, they fall into the routine of listening to the other people around them telling them to stay away from each other when everything just pulls them back together bc they are meant to be *together* and they cannot thrive without each other and everyone around them is terrified of that. they know how powerful eve and villanelle are together and they tried so hard to make them act out of character and hate each other for no other purpose than to force whatever shitty narrative they wanted. eve would’ve never slapped villanelle or had her arrested (actually idk on that one but i don’t think so). and the absolute 180 that s4 took having villanelle join the church after that beautiful moment of them finally accepting and understanding that they will thrive together and are choosing to have that life for themselves will be the biggest joke of all time. villanelle never gave a fuck if she was a good person so long as eve didn’t care. eve didn’t think villanelle was a monster. why are writers so afraid of having these two queer women together so badly that they can’t find a way to write the story with them together and kicking ass? like they must seriously be so embarrassed to be so boring that their only option is to deconstruct them to nothing so they can force their own opinions on it. and how absolutely purely homophobic laura neal was calling their s4 kiss “the piss kiss” bc she wanted it to be as unromantic as possible bc she didn’t want them to actually ever be together. she had no intentions of it. nobody ever had intentions of letting these two women be together (minus PWB possibly) and it’s so painfully obvious yet through it all, eve and villanelle found their ways to prevail in their own story and that’s why their story will never be over.

One thing that frustrates me sometimes is that the premise of the original RHATO team joining up together would not... take a lot to be made into something actually decent. Respect for the characters, really. Keep Kori's amnesia, keep Roy's isolation, but nudge the script a little:
Jason is vaguely familiar to Kori, because canonically they DID meet at least once when he was Robin (ignoring n52's everything tbh, the continuity still confuses me sometimes esp when some writers couldnt decide whether ot not 52 was a reboot or if they were going to keep referencing prior shit), but she doesn't remember, just has vague vibes and maybe he can help her with that if they knew each other? And Jason could try to help with what he can but he barely knew her, really. He's agonized bcs the only person he knows who might maybe help is Dick and he's Very Deliberately Estranged from the Bats.
Enter a tip from Talia. Maybe Jason reached out asking about the Titans, maybe she knows where he is and came to the conclusion that interacting with non-Bat heroes that he had a decently positive relationship before his death would be beneficial to him.
Roy's been off-grid since some time after Lian's death, pushing away everyone and deliberately running headfirst into things that could kill him. They're planning to televise his execution, but don't want to risk him getting rescued before that, but they can't hide from her spies. It solves a lot of problems then, doesn't it? Jason and Kori rescue him and he can help her with her memories and/or get her back in touch with the rest of their old team to help and Jason doesn't have to deal with any Bats himself.
But then they don't leave.
Kori's pretty content as she is, with people who know and have been helping her. Her memory loss isn't exactly life-threatening or anything and she's not in any hurry. Roy took one look at the two of them and came to the conclusion that he could help here, help both of them, and they won't judge him for what he's done or try to force him to reconnect with anyone before he was ready to face them/reality (if ever).
And Jason? Jason's a wounded animal snapping at anyone and anything that tries to come too close and covering up his own issues by fucking with shitty ppl & ruining their day. It's a bit of a challenge to make him chill out, but neither of the other two are afraid of that and he's already done all this to help them so why not return the favor?
Jason's the "leader", not because he's more qualified to lead a team but because he needs the feeling of being in control. There's only three of them and there's enough power & experience between them to compensate if anything goes off the rails & Roy's fluent enough in Bat from all his history with Dick to nudge Jason a little to the left if he has to. It's halfway between babysitting and a vacation.
(Amusingly this gave me the mental image of Roy & Kori in beach gear slurping colorful mocktails and Jason running around on an adult-sized child leash.)
You could even keep Roy/Kori, build it up slightly more, ect., ect. Just make it an actual relationship & not turning Kori into a sex doll lmao. I mean they were friends! Even without Dick they were friends with Each Other! & sometimes friendships can get sexual or turn into relationships!
None of this fixes like the racism & such in a bunch of the plot but that's a speech for whole different post I think, and I'm honestly not sure if I've got the chops to redesign all that. At the very least, it would be too big of a distraction from everything else I'm already easily distracted from working on lmao.

I mean some people clearly do not pay any attention to the show they are watching because what the heck??
1. Lucy is not the villain. She’s not trying to get in the way of Hawk and Tim, ever.
Gosh the sheer amount of hate towards her the past two weeks is insane. How come women in every gay show always receive the hate? Well, maybe some writers were actually lazy and the fastest way the could think of was to villanize women so they could have less a problem to think about. But this is not the case for FT where every character shows their own color, and they have reasons for every action they take.
Yes, she married Hawk. But it was bc everybody expected them to do that since, idk, the very beginning? Bc she adored him and trusted him enough? And not to mention Hawk asked her to marry him? Remind y’all, she’s also the victim of the era.
Yes, she burnt Tim’s letter. It was crazy enough to hear your own mother lecturing you to shut up about your husband’s outside behaviours as long as he comes back home at the end of the day. But actually receiving a letter from his ex-lover, whom is a man, saying that he was still in love with your man, was on another level! Lucy had every right to confront Hawk and made a fuss about everything. Yet she was so calm and reasoned, knowing that if she threw a tantrum then everybody’d know her husband was gay and they’d all suffer. Lucy knew for a fact that even if Hawk did receive the letter, he wouldn’t have done anything at all, so nothing changed.
And I love that she told Tim about it. She did not regret anything, nor felt any shame, just a plain announcement that she knew everything from the start of this marriage already. She did what had to be done. She could’ve been upset with Tim for bringing danger and misery to her family, but she just simply told him about the letter and let the man go. Splendid writing!
2. Hawk is gay. Hawk is not bisexual.
Never know I have to clarify this obvious fact. Him being married to a woman and having sex with her does not mean he’s bisexual. That’s just what gay men do to hide their true nature and to live peacefully in this world. Maybe not the US, but many countries nowadays still do not approve same-sex marriage, and queer people still have to marry someone they don’t love just to have “a shield” to cover for themselves. Has Hawk ever shown any interests in women? No. Has Hawk ever had sex with another woman besides his wife? No. Was it true that all of his sex partners now and then were men? Yes. So, that’s your answer. He’s gay as fuck.
3. Hawk is not the only person to blame. Tim is also at fault.
Roast me later, hear me out.
Hawk is a shitty person, I agree. He has done so many cruel things to his lover, his wife, and his child, and he continues to do so bc he’s a shitty person.
But, after all the shitty things Hawk did, Tim came back to him. Hawk warned Tim about their relationship very early. “But Skippy, that’s all it was, that’s all it can be. I’m sorry.”. Tim was soft for Hawk, so he accepted that easily. He’d love to love, rather than not having love at all. Hawk broke up with Tim on the day before Christmas, he was prepared to end it all so that Tim wouldn’t rely his emotions too much on him. For some reasons they got back to each other again, only to be separated one more time 6-7 months later. Tim made Hawk promise not to write, yet he was the one to break the promise. 14 years later, Tim couldn’t help himself but seeing Hawk again, sneaking outside his house just to witness his “happy” family. He was aware of the pain and guilt, but he was so lost in love, his “consuming love”, he gave in every time.
I know Tim did not deserve any of this, he had a pure heart and he gave it all to Hawk. That’s why we love him, and we feel pity for him too. But he had choices he was not willing to make, so it’s on him too yk.
4. There’s more to Tim’s guilt.
After jerking off with Hawk, Tim immediately forced Hawk to leave him. But why people only mentioned that it was bc he felt guilty with God? I believe he had 2 things to be sorry for. 1 is the reason everybody was talking about, God. The 2nd one, I’m pretty sure he felt guilty towards Lucy too. He couldn’t hold himself, he missed his man so damn much, and he let his heart took over for a sec. Tim knew he shouldn’t bc that was so wrong, and he did something really really awful to someone who’s having a wife and two children at home. He hated himself for it.
If you hate Lucy or Hawk, please block me I’m begging you bc I can’t stand another person interpret them wrongly like that. For the sake of my mental health, please block me with your every power!

I’m obviously super fuckin late to this but WHAT THE FUCK WAS HARRYS SURPRISE FOR Y/N??? (ysijwa) sorry not yelling I knew when I started this fic it was unfinished and I thought I’d be able to handle it but I severely underestimated my emotional investment
Ps you’re a beautiful writer and thank you for blessing us with what you did. I do hope it gets finished but if not thank you for all you gave us anyway. Such a beautiful story and the way the plot and characters developed was just so realistic and authentic. I’ve read many fics where like the MC is just magically the game changer and upon Harry first meeting them, it’s like an imaginary spotlight shines on them and they stand out in a crowded room. And I’ve always struggled to find that storyline believable. Like for some reason she just magically stands out? But the way y’all wrote it was just so organic and well written that it was unbelievable. In fact, he chose her for the opposite reason, which was just so bloody clever? And then I understood why she captured him over time, believed in why she was his game changer. There’s so many parts that had me giggling and hiding under my covers and grinning like a fool at my phone. So much joy and silly goofy things and little moments that were sprinkled in that I feel get missed in other fics. His goon squad being so funny. And the c/w’s were just the cutest. And there’s so much personality in both of y’all’s writing. I know I had more to say but I’m blanking. Will drop back by and let you know if I remember pending this message isn’t annoying for you. It was just a joy to read.
OH MY GOD PLSKWKDJS MY FUCKING HEART 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹 YOUR MESSAGE ISNT ANNOYING AT ALL, ITS ACTUALLY MADE MY ENTIRE DAY 😭😭😭😭 thank you sm for leaving such a sweet, thoughtful message it truly made me smile so big wtf 😔😔😔
I tried to give some context clues about the surprise but essentially he built her a big pillow fort bc he knows she’s feeling homesick and it’s something her and her friends used to do :’) and he got a bracelet making kit cause she’d mentioned that too so they’re gonna have a date in there and make silly little bracelets for each other and just be goofy lovey dovey morons AS THEY SHOULD!!!
I’m so happy you liked the way the storyline developed, I know some ppl were beefing with the fact that he was so indifferent to her in the beginning 💀 but that’s what makes their relationship arc so meaningful, it wouldn’t be realistic if he just immediately took to her bc real connection takes time and effort y’know??
AND IM SO GLAD YOU LIKE THE FANG GANG THEYRE SO STUPID I LOVE THEMNDNF they’re my bbys 🤏
Pls do drop by again if you’d like, I love hearing people’s thoughts on the fic even if it’s been on hold for a bit cause of life and work 🥺 I do hope to finish it, it’s just gonna take a bit 😭 THANK YOU SM AGAIN MY HEART’S GONNA BURST

So like I started to write yet another long 12 am ramble about a pokemon character based on their dialogue. It was Emerald Anabel this time, as I wanted to try and understand her character better since I felt like I was really writing her ooc. And like. I have some revelations.
1) I am begrudgingly starting to see why the anime did what they did with Anabel in regards to her crush on Ash. I never liked it personally, even as a kid, but when reading her dialogue I started to see why they could potentially try than angle with Anabel. It sounded very....."romantic". Air quotes bc I don't think that was the intent? And it only really appeared twice. Saying that the player didn't appear that attractive ( which I am taking as her generally not seeing the hype of this so called strong trainer, but again, it can be taken in a semi romantic light), and how her rematch dialogue almost seems....wistful. " You really came back to see me...." <- it seems so much more personal to her compared to literally every other Frontier Brain in Hoenn. " You really came back to see me" ( Edit: I do want to add that whole yrs, this does seem more personal to me, it could also be a " hm, so you really came back for anlther battle" type deal. I just didn't see it that way, but it's totally plausible) Now my personal interpretation of this is that Anabel is a lonely girl, even with the battle frontier, she probably didn't have a lot of people around her age to get attached too. In my drafted ramble, I kinda noted how she's so polite in her first battle, but loses that as things go on. I do think Anabel is a genuinely polite person ( we see that with her in SM), but I can also see it as her kinda....wanting to be seen as someone mature. And she's kinda shocked that someone else around her age actually decided to come back to her, even if it's for a battle. That's just me of course. The other side of this interpretation that's actually the focus of this one point, is that you could see this as romantic, which. Okay. The anime writers probably did( assuming they read Anabel's game dialogue-). So. Yeah. I don't like that I'm starting to see why the anime did what they did, but okay!
2) Kinda related to the above: I am just fucking connecting the maiden in the tower thing. Like holy fucking shit. I made jokes about Anabel bring princely. I made posts about how Wally takes over the Battle Tower, and how his brand is him being a prince. Prince in a tower. So why the fuck did I not connect that with Anabel. She's the maiden in the tower. It kinda explains her behavior in a way? She starts off very polite, but gradually sheds that shell. She gives off the vibe of someone who's honestly lonely ( again, I think back to the " you really came back for me" line), until someone else comes into her life. And this isn't to say that she's not close with the rest of the frontier brains. Imo, I think she's pretty close with them! But they're still older than her, at least I get the impression that they are. So in a way, she's still alone, just in a different way, in her tower. Of course, I'm really looking into it. And this prooooooobably wasn't what was intended. It's still interesting to think about. A lovely tomboy, gnc maiden in a tower.
Tbh, I think I won't even post that analysis/ ramble bc I got my point of Anabel's loneliness ( at least to me) across here. Also it's not nearly as long. Though I do suggest reading Anabel's emerald quotes. They gave me whiplash. She goes "fufufu". I'm not joking.

im gonna respond to criticisms about adventure time that i saw in a twitter thread bc im bored and have feelings and thoughts
Tumblr media
the most frequent reply to the thread was that people believe finn’s breakup with flame princess was stupid and, at worst, was an attempt by the female writers to make the male protagonist Finn as dislikeable as possible.
Tumblr media
i don’t think i’ve ever met a single fan of adventure time who thinks “yeah that finn the human guy? he sucks. totally dislikeable protagonist.” i have to believe these people simply watched up to this episode and then quit the show. they didn’t see any of the followup. they didn’t watch finn grow up. they didn’t see the episode where finn acknowledges specifically what he did wrong and makes amends with flame princess. i just simply do not understand this criticism.
Tumblr media
WHAT SHOW ARE U WATCHING? GO WATCH THE SHOW CALLED “ADVENTURE TIME” AVAILABLE ON MAX AND HULU
Tumblr media
ppl won’t shut the fuck up about rebecca sugar even when she’s NOT a show runner
Tumblr media
moving onto princess bubblegum. now call me crazy but i’ve always liked princess bubblegum as a character. i also understand where a lot of this criticism comes from and im able to qualify that my affinity towards her character comes with a fair bit of nuance as well as coming from a place of bias via naivete
the idea that the show turns a blind eye to her abuses is absurd to me. the show explicitly shows her hurting characters that we care about, and it in no way is framed as good. it acknowledges her flaws, which is why we the audience are aware of them. and in-universe I think she is quite literally called out by almost every major character lmao does the show punish her enough? well that’s like, an interesting question to ask and a fun way to think about the show and her character. what does princess bubblegum deserve? well we know she got usurped and exiled for some time. that gave her some time to reflect a bit.
now you don’t necessarily have to think of that as a redemption arc. at the very least the show took the opportunity to show us other facets of her character. she can be vulnerable, she can be kind, she can feel remorseful. and she does, like, improve in my opinion. in “The Thin Yellow Line” princess bubblegum has a whole speech condemning her idolization, saying she’s “just a person, like all of you” it’s quite wholesome. It’s further reinforced in “High Strangeness” when she apologizes to tree trunks for trying to colonize space and inadvertently infecting her alien children with candy goo (lmao i know it sounds ridiculous but watch the episode lol) obviously i’m not gonna sit here and be like “princess bubblegum is great and was  completely redeemed and a morally exemplary paragon to be revered by all” but like, come on twitter. you’re not at all convincing me here
Tumblr media
now im gonna talk about his one!! the animation!! i have a lot of ways i like to think about how the style/animation/tone/format of this show changes over time. the central pillar of these is exactly in line with the shows most prominent theme: growing up. finn ages from 12 to 17 and a lot of what the show explores is the transition from “boyhood” to “manhood” and how it’s messy, nonlinear, painful, joyful, and rich with new experiences. i think the stylistic changes, even if they can also be explained by ward stepping down as showrunner, also reinforce this theme fantastically. if we’re seeing the world through finn’s eyes, of course in his early years things are much more colorful, fantastical, and whimsical. and as he ages, we see the world more clearly, things seem more grounded, more mature.  that’s why i can’t really take any criticism in line with this seriously because it’s just too well done it works too dang well.  and don’t get me started on how this theme extends to all the other characters. i could literally go on but i’ve already made my point hehe.
Tumblr media
i dont have anything to say about this one it’s just funny hehe okay im gonna go now

sorry to keep coming back here lmaojgkdflhf but i started rewatching (bits and pieces of) mann mayal this past week and like. what a phenomenon. was the plot horrible. yes. did it drive all of us crazy with the melodrama. absolutely. is the fact that it was the note ayesha khan decided to end her career on kind of hysterical. i certainly think so. but something about it was nonetheless so enrapturing. the direction and music production definitely contribute to that but i also think for whatever all of the mess was on top i really was transfixed by mannu's narrative arc. like it was powerful! obv it was easy to get caught up in all of the fine details and chastise mannu for her brashness or stupidity but the point was that she had always had decisions taken for her her entire life. to see a female character so stubborn and possessive about her right to make her own decisions regardless of whatever anyone else with "sense" had to say about them bc her agency was that important to her in a societal context of women's oppression.. it was incredibly liberating! and i hate to bring the fairy tale comparisons back but i think esp in contrast to the latter it was empowering bc post time skip salahuddin was in every aspect The Ideal Guy. he cared about mannu, he bantered with her, he protected her, he was eager to guide her, etc. but that was precisely the problem, bc everything was about his protectiveness over her rather than a respect for her ability to make her own decisions and chart her own life path. to see her refuse to succumb to his will to the very end, the very end! the fact that he had to accept that he could not make her decisions for her and that to be let back into her life again she would have to be absolutely convinced he would respect her agency and desires! just, wow. that final scene in the last episode truly takes my breath away. sameera fazal makes me want to bash my head into a wall with how ridiculous her plots are but i can't lie that i do love the undercurrent themes in a lot of them. it makes me wonder what she'd do with a story if creating melodrama to get views wasn't such a necessity
I've been saying this for YEARS that Mannu was a far stronger character than people gave her credit for. I do blame the direction for literally bahaoing all of Mannu's strengths in the oceans of tears that she was made to shed in every fucking episode. beneath it all, Mannu as a person was just so staunchly protective of her OWN agency that really she can give many characters a masterclass in how to own their destiny. yeah sure, a deeper conversation about whether an agency that is purely masochist an agency worth celebrating can be held here. but there's no denying that Mannu's agency EXISTS. we cannot say the same about so many of the female protagonists. #MannuProtectionSquad!!
I do think Samira Fazal would make a much better short drama writer. Her basic plots are always fun. she just tends to lose the plot when she has to write 30+ episodes of it. which is what happened with Mann Mayal. which is what happens to ANY of her dramas. do you know Shukk? uska bhi yehi haal hua tha. i really enjoyed that drama in its first half and then toh phir toh too much hi hogaya.
Mann Mayal aired at the perfect time which is why the show enjoyed the blockbuster popularity it did. I am thankful it didn't air at the time when armchair "critics" were running their mouths mindlessly criticizing every project on air just to churn out an hour worth of content twice a week. social media trolled and celebrated the drama. Hamza Ali Abbasi was THE darling of the awaam and Maya got to enjoy a peak with Mannu that I am afraid she won't get to enjoy again in any other character. despite all the rubbishness..the show just worked. it didn't bother with giving any social message or sensationalizing for the sake of having a shock value. it was a melodrama, plain and simple, and fully committed itself to the genre. however, years later, the show still contains some moments of sheer brilliance that have not been tainted by time. in fact, I think now is a very good time to go back and watch Mann Mayal with an open mind. with no trolling to distract us or the long wait of a week between episodes to exhaust, and the entirety of the plot easily available on wikipedia to read..Mann Mayal becomes a show that should be watched to appreciate the technical finesse with which it handled some of the show's pivotal moments as well as to finely study the characterization of its very grey protagonists, flaws and virtues all at once.

tbh It made me realise the reason why I loved SP's take on depression was better, if u compare Stan with other characters whose purpose is being social commentary on depression and mental health (Effy Stonem from Skins and Hanah Baker from 13 RW).
Hannah Baker (13RW)
Her character frustates me because 13 RW had so much potential, the idea was creative, narrating how many stuff drove her to suicide: from bullying,h4rr4sment,SA'D r4pe, not only adressing depression but to adress those things as well.
I know the author's intention and Selena Gomez's idea were good and focus on mental health but the development was icky, some dialogues feel rushed to arrive to the tragedy, some traumatic events feel to gave shock value to the audience than genuiely comment on it, besides how the series remarks you that if the love interest would have confesed Hannah, It would have saved her.
Which is very hurtful for many reasons.
A partner can help u throught recovery and being moral support but they aren't ur therapist, adding the fact that selling the idea "if he would have confessed,he would have saved her" when confessing or just be with them doesn't automatically saved them??.
Very different with SP, like Wendy and Kyle genuinely wanted to help Stan, but their moral support isn't enough to get him out of depression and sometimes it can be tiring for others (Kyle)
However If we compare a character that is more similar w/ Stan.
• they are both main characters and the leader of their friendgroup.
• they are the younger sibling.
• they can be charismatic, smart, and independant from such young age
• they can be bit arrogant sometimes.
• both of them are done with everyone's bs.
• both of them distrustful of adults, and sometimes get embarrased at their parent's stupidity.
•struggles with relationship, fear of abandoment.
• heavy uses of alcohol plus depression.
However their character differs on how the writers made them, while Skins's purpose was to show life never ends how u want it to be, and endings could be most be sad or just neutral, healing. Showing adolescence, teens struggling with addictions, disfunctional families, etc.
Skins GLAMOURIZED her depression, unlike her brother's behaviour. He was villianized (bc he was an asshole,he deserved it but he matured),he got heavier consequences. unlike her, while her friends and her love interest were fed up,they forgave her too quickly. it also presents u the narrative "love interest saves depressed person" to a whole level, while she was ""recovering". Out of nowhere, her bf gets killed by her psychiatrist?? Out of shock value. Even when she gets a bit of consequences she managed to manipulate to save herself, even with that smirk of "I'm effy stonem I'm always get what I want".
Effy represents an unhealthy and glamourized ideas of depression that the show pushed on it's female fanbase. (as someone w/ depression, when I saw the show I questioned why my depression didn't make me mysterious and prettier or get a bf that saved me from it)
"Her depression it's destructing her but that makes her even prettier and mysterious, ppl want to be her or fuck her"
and it had such an impact that on tumblr when the show came out until this day, many ppl want to be as mentally ill as Effy or fuck her.
Stan's depression and his self destructive tendencies is never showed as something that makes him mysterious or quirky. Neither his philosophy and way of thinking. His conflicts don't feel like to be shock value.
Althought he didn't get therapy at all,it protrayed realistically how some ppl don't get opportunity to be treated, and how sometimes they just have to move forward, feeling like shit but then a neutral point u don't care about anything, neither happy or sad, and keep moving.
Plus his personality, his behaviour in certain situations makes him more relatable to me than any character.
Tegridy farms burning? It was smth u see was coming. Because his anger is explosive, he puts out with his father behaving like a child, drinking, sometimes belittle him, always fighting with this mom for dumb stuff. The farm was an idea clearly Shelly,Sharon and him disliked. And them fighting over the divorce bc Randy didn't want to share money w/ Sharon was his breaking point, the impulsiveness "oh fuck it farm goes boom bc he is an asshole" cost him sister's life in the bad ending.
They showed Wendy trying to be suppoetive but not as his therapist or "love interest saves depressed person". Neither make Kyle his therapist or sm.
And it sometimes surprised me how SP while is social commentary is also dark humor and parody treated depression withot demonizing Stan neither glamourizing his depression.
Honestly his character is so interesting i could analyze that bitch for hours.
Idk how to expressed it but ugh.
I haven't seen Skins so I don't have a point of reference for it lol. I'm gonna go on a bit of a tangent with this.
Depression in South Park and its fandom is a tricky thing because I think a lot of people don't have realistic, or sensitive, headcanons about depression. Which is probably obvious by my whiny posts lately lol.
But it's also something, both for South Park as a fandom and media at large that needs to be looked at pretty carefully. There's a lot of headcanons that if I'm being blunt I think are God awful and insensitive if people think about it critically at all. Which I do try to weigh with the source being South Park which can in itself be insensitive.
The thing that makes South Park as a source fairly unique is it represents a more stereotypically 'masculine' depression. Which isn't to say women can't or don't act that way. But the 'explosive' depression is something that is more typically present in men. And that isn't something that is often present in media as a whole; the typical depiction of depression is more by-the-book representative of young women. (Again not exclusively so. Some of Stan's more annoying/negative traits are things I've felt and worked to outgrow. Probably some I've failed at lol). It also feels very authentic, presumably because Stan is so much of Trey in ways that characters aren't typically so emotionally autobiographical and usually have multiple writers.
That leads to the crux of my waffling with a lot of handling of depression. It very often is based on female depression, and whether in media or fandom is often based on stereotypes of this, such as cutting etc. A lot of stereotype appears because the authors can't personally relate. But then again, quite often authors DO relate to this, and it occurs so often because the authors themselves are more typically women than men, in particular in fandom. But on the other OTHER hand, depression is often treated as childishly annoying and something to grow out of, and in mocking it it very often is done by exaggerating the female depression stereotype that everyone has in their heads. Even in South Park there's a mess of trying to write mental illness but not being able to relate personally, relating personally but not presenting in the same way as is typical the demographic represented and shown in South Park, and finding mental illness annoying and actively mocking it, usually in these underhanded kind of headcanons.
Anyway this is a mess lol I'm about to clock out for work but hopefully there's still something decent in what I said. Mental illness and its representation is so multifaceted! Maybe I'll talk more about it tomorrow when I'm off :) thanks for the ask!
ETA Now that I'm back home:
Overall what makes good representation is:
Knowing from personal experience
Being earnest
There are at times things you can extrapolate from your personal knowledge of being human and feeling emotions even if you don't know things personally. But it's going to always feel truer when it is truer even with the best of intentions.
Being earnest makes a huge difference, too, and is something I think people forget. Shows like South Park can be and often are insensitive, but the feelings behind them are also often authentic and earnest. Shows like Skins, often aren't earnest by design in that more dramatic/soap opera based shows are usually looking for more shock value than emotional authenticity (someone feel free to correct me if I've missed the mark on the genre though. This is just what I've vaguely picked up from Skins from seeing like 2 or 3 eps and knowing the general premise lol). I think it also speaks to my earlier points in that the VAST majority of the writing credits for this show are men and have no lived experience as being a depressed teen girl. No lived experience and a desire for emotional reaction over emotional connection is, to me, always going to lead to a less 'true' outcome. Even if the show has its own positive merits.
I actually DID read Thirteen Reasons Why (in high school) and watched uhhh about 15 minutes of the show, which I quit because it struck me as OTT in a way that I don't really like. I did like the book okay but also thought at the time 'this dude doesn't know what it's like to be a girl', which is the crux of a lot of problems. But I do think Jay Asher has his heart in the right place which covers up some of the problems. I've heard a little bit about the show that makes me inclined to agree it leans into shock value though.
Side note as a rec, everyone should watch Ordinary People. That movie's good as hell.

like and when people get mad at the valid criticisms of her. it's like, I'm sorry the character you created is not the one in the show?? she doesn't have enough/anything that makes her likable enough to outweigh the things in canon that make her unlikable! like no thanks!
"she's just the vessel for the writers shitty idea of what a strong woman looks like" soo true though. every attempt falls flat, or upholds stereotypes and her inability to look outside her own experiences
the fucksibdjdjfkdkg "my friends call me jj. you're not my friend you can call me jennifer"
its so fucking elementary afsgdghdjfh 9 year olds say worse to each other. it's not the slay moment everyone thinks it is
one instance in particular i can't stand is in s3ep14, they're at that carnival for rossi's case, and derek says "I can't believe people waste good money on these fixed games" and girlboss jj says "men" "its not people it's men" "only a man would waste $50 trying to win that $3 stuffed animal"
and just. parents. parents bring their kids to carnivals all the time. to have fun and win shitty prizes. oh but I forgot she wasn't a mom yet, so that wasn't her entire personality. I don't know. for me it just never hits as the girlboss moment every one thinks it is. but go off I guess afsghdhfkh
I've fallen out of it with cm a little lately, but unfortunately it will always have some hold on my soul lmao, and I got caught up in reading through your takes, and truly, this show fucking sucks, but analyzing it can be sO fun and you drop nothing but bangers. it reminded me in a way why I like this god awful show in the first place afgsgrhfjfjgshf
like if anyone gave me a single solid reason to like her character at all i might give her a chance. but i’ve been watching cm for a decade, and kept a finger on the pulse of the fandom for half that. so far ive heard absolutely no legitimate thing to like about her
even fanon jj falls flat for me? she’s so one dimensional and they never address any of her flaws. people either make her the target of emily’s infatuation (which is so fucked up on so many levels?? as if we need any more of the aggressive/obsessive lesbian stereotype) or they keep her as the mom of the group and leave it at that. absolutely NO nuance!! im convinced its bc they know we’re right… actually giving her a personality would mean acknowledging how insufferable she us
imo the best thing you can do with her character is actually talk about her internal conflicts. she’s got massive imposter syndrome and she takes it out on everyone!! thats interesting at least!! lets talk about that!! but nooo bc that would mean admitting everyones favorite blonde haired blue eyes beauty makes mistakes
god ur so right in that aaaaaall her girlboss moments are just so pathetic. i love to tear those moments to pieces because its just so fucking easy. clearly shitty attempts at the writers thinking theyre saying something clever or profound. it scares me how frequently the fandom falls for it. like. develop some critical thinking skills pls i am begging
im also well out of my cm phase, but its still so deeply engrained that even when i havent watched an ep in months, my opinions are as strong as ever especially since theyre always so correct. but yeah there’s something so special about cm? i think its all the half-suggested hints at something deeper that gives us a chance to try and build on it. but its also so casually entertaining that its also nice to just have on in the background. criminal minds is as good as you make it, ig

Sometimes I see people's critiques on female characters and it's like... some of y'all really *really* can't handle a complex female character.
"she's mean and uses men." So? What's the context?
She lives in an oppressive male society where her people are literally vored for existing like regardless of gender because the elite believe it will bring them closer to immortality? So she latches on to the most powerful person in the room who isn't going to violently assault and eat her and changes herself to be whatever that person wants her to be (and that person is usually a man bc again oppressive male society, and most likely attracted to her because most people who do are)? And she will do whatever she can to stay in his good grace even if it means being cruel to others? And when someone else becomes a potential threat that can replace her they become the target of ire? Yea that makes perfect sense.
That's what we call being a product of your environment y'all. If you grow up somewhere where it's common place to steal food to survive are you really going to be surprised that someone who grew up like that was not blessed with opportunities and had to steal food so they won't starve?
Is the writer a bad writer for writing a female character like this? No. I literally can not understand how someone would make a leap like this. The author gave you a backstory where the actions of the character makes sense. That's good characterization. Good writer making believable characters. She's not looking for a "hero" to save her because she has no reason to believe in heros. She's opportunistic, she's manipulative, she doesn't trust anyone who can toss her and she makes sense. Why should she trust anyone? Even if someone saves her, what is there intention? Why would you save her? The only logical reason she can probably think of would be to make her willing in her own prison when that person will eventually try to wed her (and the narrative proves this to be true TWICE). Of course she's going to be cruel when she's never known anything but cruelness to survive.
Now listen, am I saying that in our current modern society she did nothing wrong? Fuck no. But even then I would believe that if given different circumstances, if she lived in a perfect and fair world she would make different choices. Why am I derailing my point to mention this? Cause y'all got bad reading comprehension and get mad when someone points out that maybe you're not as judgement free as you think you are.
Yes this is about Song Qiutong and Meatbun because I saw someone trying to explain why Song Qiutong is a misogynistic portrayal of a women even though Meatbun writes "good female characters". Even though the novel gives you context to her cruelty. I'm not saying you gotta like her. I'm saying viewing her as a "badly written female character" is telling on yourself.

The real reason Donnie sound-prooved the lab is bc he plays League of Legends on his nights off.
Which we all know, is when the evilest and most toxic part of your personality comes out.
So he would listen to fnaf songs and his usual stuff while having the time of his life or just repeatedly screaming: "DO YOU EVEN FUCKING KNOW HOW TO PLAY THIS GAME??!???!??" at the screen. While raging very hardcore.
He does only play once or twice a week to avoid permanent aggression. As to reduce usual aggression towards his family and not feed that and make him rage off in the middle of the day.

Okay but
Mikey definitely knits and sews. That's his thing. And he makes his brothers those knitted animals you see on Pinterest
Tumblr media
These ones.
And oh me gosh the shenanigans that he could pull,,, but mainly i am convinced his brothers love and support him so much <3 bc he is the youngest <3 and idk i always love supporting my little sister when she's a big fan of something and i think it's really sweet. Like
Ralph gets mostly the stuffed animals, and he has a. Lot. Of them. But yk, you can never really have enough <3 because of his big rough shell and body he can't always squish and hug his family, specifically his siblings, as much as he'd like to, so the animals help him get some of his energy out <3
Leo gets the cool accessories. I'm talking: really awesome gloves, that goose bag from the pic, oh yes he unironically loves it. Knitted jellyfish ?? That he loves and adores so much that he shows to every person coming into his room?? A mini money purse that is shaped like a frog and can be opened by opening the frogs mouth????? Yes bitch. That's his stuff.
And ofc Donnie gets most of the knitted and sewn hoodies and jackets. (Head Canon that he also wears lots of robes just like their dad in the future, just really joggy and lose outfits)
Mikey even tried to replicate the purple jacket(!!!!!) As best as he could and after LOTS of hard work. And lots of investment of time and other bodily fluids. He gave it to Donnie on his birthday. You could say that Donnie rubbedd it very much in everyone's faces <3
(Mikey also made knee for Leo bc he and donut are twins, but the Leo agreed with Mikey that he'd get his a day after their birthday just to let Donnie have his fame and happiness for the day)
After Mikey's success with the purple jackets, he went and started in the designs of official mad dogs (!) Jackets!!! (It'd be a surprise for new years or something)
Donnie also gets.....!!!
Those knitted cat ears that you can wear on your headphones but also normally <3 Donnie, after that, only owns headphones with those car ear covers that Mikey made for him <3
Also cannot forget our main girl April ♡♡♡♡
She's a big big big autumn fan (no I'm not projecting) and Mikey made her some small mushrooms in various sizes and colors. And a tote bag with a strawberry pattern!!! Which is her favorite in the world!!!! (Also every Halloween he comes around with an outfit for Mayhem, i mean yeah mayhem can't hold still and doesn't wanna wear em but THEY LOOK SO. FREAKING CUTE ON THEM <333333)
Splinter gets socks. Because he's old and he complained about cold feet (he did also get a blanket for his tv chair. With which he falls even faster asleep)
Draxum also got some socks and a robe. So now he and splints are the tired dads who deserve retirement <3
And Mikey? He loves loves loves seeing how happy he can make his family <3 he loves to get inspired by the humans fashion sense and goes to social media to see what else he can put into his works. He always tries to find something new that he can somehow connect with his passion of creating!

It's my not so humble opinion that they had to SEVERELY limit team Cap because if they included everyone it would have probably have been about twice the size of team Iron Man, especially considering the people on team Iron Man mostly were loyal to their own agenda+ a lied to kid.
i have two characters i'd have replaced with her
one (and im sorry to my friend who likes him) is clint since 99.9% of the time i forget he was even there, like i'm not kidding i frequently got "WAIT CLINT IS IN THIS MOVIE?!?!"
idk since they didn't bother to properly establish sharon in tws at all and she played no part in aou it would have made more sense to have maria, but then they couldn't have no-homo'd so

the ultimate power move against my brain being insecure about people never giving a shit about my writing would be to keep writing anyways but im too busy trying not to cry to even think about what to write so hows that for a power move
#mine#personal#sorry im just really insecure#and have spent a v long time lacking in support that actually feels substantial#like yeah i have friends that tell me they believe in me and like my writing but do half of them ever read any of it? no#like i dont want to devalue the amazing support i do get i also try to be understanding that my friends arent all gonna like the type of#content that i produce#but i spent my entire fucking childhood with ONE person who gave a shit about anything i wrote#as in actively interacting with my writing and expressing ideas and feelings about my characters#and years later the number has gone up to two and a half#and it just feels shitty and it only got worse bc i just wanted to express one minor thought about it to a friend#and she tried her best to be supportive and show me my fears are unfounded#but im a fucking asshole and just felt worse about it after#and its just one of those things about being a writer that is uniquely different to any other form of art#and this is coming from someone not an artist so im not gonna say we have it harder bc i dont know#but it is different when getting anyone to consume ur work takes active time and effort out of their day#more time than most mediums of art i think#and when you write for things that only apply to certain niches its even harder#to get anyone to really give a fuck about TRYING to give a fuck#so i just feel unappreciated and left hanging by all the people that say they want to read my writing and support my work but do absolutely#jack shit to prove it#does that make me an ungrateful bitch for getting upset about this?#probably#what else is new being an ungrateful bitch is just my MO right

@whumper-in-training
ok I don’t know how long my caption is allowed to be, but here it is! The promised fan art! I REFUSE to be self-deprecating here because I actually do like these a lot. Basically, I read this amazing story called ACP- The Agency for Cryptids and the Paranormal, (https://whumper-in-training.tumblr.com/post/673130936584568832/acp-the-agency-for-cryptids-and-the) and I totally fell in love with the character of Zak. This STORY MAN! It broke my heart in half and then lovingly stitched it back together, like multiple times, and I think that’s the ESSENCE of a good story. So yeah I made fan art.
I was in the car on a fairly long trip, and I had my sketchbook, and I was like, hey, what should I draw? Fuck it i’m drawing Zak. So I drew Zak. I originally didn’t want to deal with how the hoodie would work with all the weird perspective and just gave him a tee-shirt, but then I yelled at myself: “COWARD! Draw the hoodie!” And so I erased the shirt and drew a hoodie. I figure that the hoodie in the picrew isn’t how the hoodie actually looks, it’s just the closest approximation you can get with a picrew, so I put an alien on it because yes. While I was drawing it though, I hit a fork in the road with the pose. I was going to draw him with his hand clawed and the other on his hip, but then I was like “what if he had his arm up instead?” And so I made two versions.
I drew werewolf Zak hell ya! I spent FOREVER inking this. Okay if was only like two hours, but inking is kinda boring and thus I procrastinated, and so it took me like three days to ink it. It took much longer than usual Bc I went over each line a bunch of times to make it look like fur/hair/eyelashes, but you can’t even see it Bc the colors are so dark! Argh! Usually color more than doubles the amount of time I spend on a drawing, but this time I just quickly threw down some color in only like an hour! I was so sure I was gonna say, “it’ll be quick” and then spend another six hours on it, because that ALWAYS happens, but it actually WAS quick so yes.
Last but not least, I drew the gang all together! Technically I drew this second, and colored it first, but you get the idea! This drawing filled me with all the happy chemicals the whole time making it y’all. After several hours it kinda wore off, but every time I zoomed in on Max’s face I got a fresh rush of serotonin. I decided to draw that one scene where they all fall asleep together because it was SO WHOLESOME! I wanted to draw the whole group, but didn’t know what kind of context to do. Then I scrolled through the blog, found that scene, reread it and was like “yes! That’s the one!”. And so I drew it. I did have to look up “do Muslim women sleep with their hijabs on?” And i’m glad it was a google search and not asking a real person Bc the response I found was basically: “No, you dumbass! Why would we do that? That makes no sense-” and several sarcastic responses to the same question on Quora and i’m just like: “:’D” I did look into it a bit more and realized the hijab has to stay on Bc while they are like family, they’re still not her mahrams. Also I figure that if I was gonna post this, even if she was alone, drawing her without it would kinda be violating her privacy yk? Like i’m exposing her for the whole internet to see. Kinda like drawing her naked would be. Anyway, I love this drawing, hope you love it too!
Ok, still keep your expectations to an army crawl because I never finish stuff, but fanfic is in the works. I am probably gonna wait until it’s finished to post it though, that way I can edit things and change earlier chapters. Also! I’m a total novice writer! So it’s probably crap! I don’t care! I have this policy that I would always rather make the cringe fanfic, wear the ugly clothing, make the stupid drawings, the cursed memes, shout all the embarrassing shit, do all the dumb things that teenagers do (as long as it’s not harmful or permanent obvi), sing all the bad karaoke, embarrass myself a TON, etc, and regret it later, cringe so hard in ten years, than to never let myself do anything, constantly hold back, never reach my full potential and regret THAT in ten years. Thank you for listening to my TED Talk. I still might very well be too shy to post it though ahhhhh. For some reason i’m WAY more shy online than irl, that makes no sense. Like I can walk up to a random person and talk to them no prob, but I get super anxious going in someone’s ask box. Maybe Bc I can’t read their body and face language like that? Idk. Like I said, just don’t expect anything.

Rambly ass liveblogging impressions of Legend of Vox Machina ep 1 Japanese dub by a pro translator
I am literally just copypasting all the stuff I wrote in Discord lol...
so I started ep 1 in Japanese and my first impression is... the person they got to play Vex sounds startlingly like Laura holy shit 😂
the writing in the first couple minutes was ok, they preserved some of the jokes fairly well but ofc some things just don't translate very well
the opening with the LotR type dudes was still pretty funny but the names of the merc groups I didn't feel like they completely succeeded in keeping the joke there, unsurprising since that would be a hard reference to translate
oh I turned on the Japanese subtitles and they're a straight translation of the English rather than being CC of the Japanese dub, damn. I mean that's great for Japanese viewers that want the closest-to-the-original experience that they can get but less helpful for yours truly lmao
writing this down for my own notes/amusement...
Personal pronouns and grammar:
Vax: ore. so far he's bog standard modern Japanese male like you'd hear as the main character of basically anything anywhere lol.
Vex: watashi, speaks kinda femme with ~wa on the ends of her sentences
Pike: watashi or atashi, probably watashi, will listen for another one. grammar is pretty bog standard modern Japanese girl style but it's funny to hear her use ~deshou bc I'd picture her being the type not to break out desu/masu with her friends personally
Keyleth: watashi, so far bog standard modern Japanese female, she feels a little less formal than I would expect
Percy: ore. he's a lot more informal/less old timey-sounding in Japanese than he usually is in English, but tbh there's not a good way to translate the way he talks that wouldn't also make him sound like kind of a weirdo/imply unintended stuff so it's probably for the best
Scanlan: ok he first used boku when seducing the tavern keeper's daughter but when he's alone with VM he uses ore. Boku has got more of a like softer nonthreatening image to it and musical artists often use 'kimi' and 'boku' for their 'you' and 'me' in song lyrics, so I could see him using it on purpose to try to project that 'romantic lead' kind of image lmao. Ore is more what you expect to hear a typical young guy use, it's kind of macho.
Grog: ore, not much to say here, he's exactly what you'd expect a big macho bruiser dude to sound like. He doesn't quite have Travis's funny sideways way of phrasing things unfortunately, it's more standard Japanese. They did not use any dialect or anything to sub for the accent but that sort of thing is hard to translate.
oh my god I got to Scanlan's bedroom scene 😂
they don't really translate the joke in the song alas, like I think it's still a funny scene without it but
"My lady's rose I will pluck/My love it's time for us to (fuck)" got turned into "Kimi no hanabira wa / Mou boku no mono sa" meaning "Your petals now belong to me" or "your petals are now mine" they didn't try to put in a pun here but they did keep the meter and rhyme lmao
amusingly when Percy asks Scanlan to put on some pants, they kept that exact line in Japanese, but "pantsu" in Japanese means specifically underwear so Japanese Percy is asking something a little different 😂
Japanese Scanlan is very polite to the tavern keeper. 😂
I feel like the dub writing is pretty sharp. I haven't checked out the more direct translation in the subtitles yet but they gave the dub script to a competent dialogue writer. the gang is as funny to listen to bantering with each other in Japanese as I would expect Vox Machina ought to be.
ironically in some ways it's easier to listen to than the original cast bc they're just actors doing a job and less self conscious about the fact that they're Acting as their D&D characters lmao
it's not quite the first time the CR gang ever got into a recording booth as Vox Machina but almost lol
lmaoooooo when Keyleth's like "Vex and Vax only care about themselves" Japanese Vex and Vax are like "we'll fucking kill you"
boo when Scanlan's like "I want to bed everyone in the realm" they translated it as "I want to bed every girl in the realm"
not surprised though sigh
they translated the "drain the basilisk" joke pretty directly but Japanese viewers if they're into this kind of cartoon do probably know what a basilisk is so
...ok I really like Scanlan's actor
when he gets on a roll he resembles Sam kinda like 3/4ths of the way lmao and he can do the falsetto shriek thing
and I do feel like he captures the spirit of the original performance pretty well, even thinking about the original tabletop performance
oof they tried on the "introducing Vox Machina" song but that one was a lot rougher than the previous song 😂 I imagine adapting all these songs was probably pretty hard to pull off
oh my god I can't decide if Kima sounds so off bc they're having her use really polite grammar since she's talking to Uriel or if they really just gave her Generic Girl Femme Grammar, god I hope it's the first one
but she used "kashira" ffs
that's like something you expect to hear out of the mouth of the main character's sweet middle aged anime mom who's gonna die in the 2nd scene lmao
....lmao Pike's dubious blessing is funnier in Japanese tbh
I felt like Ashley didn't quite know what to do with the scene in the original version, or maybe the dialogue was just a little off idk? but Japanese Pike flubs it up a little bit and is like "I'm sure everything'll be, uh, super awesome!" that kind of mood 😂
it's the same idea as the original ofc but maybe a little better executed
I'm ngl obviously nothing can beat the original Critical Role cast when it comes to the actual voices, but I kind of like the dialogue writing better in Japanese 😂
I think so far my only real gripe with the dub is they should've used Keyleth's speaking style for Pike and Pike's speaking style for Keyleth lmao. neither of them sounds totally off, it's not super bad or anything, but Pike sounds a smidgen more goody two shoes than she should and Keyleth sounds a smidgen less goody two shoes than she should
I'm sure that just comes down to, y'know, the person doing this adaptation is only working off these episodes to interpret who these characters are as people
one thing that is interesting to me is Japanese Percy and Vax are very very close in speaking style
it feels like Vax leans sliiiightly more toward "nice approachable guy in his 20s" and Percy is slightly more clipped/businesslike, but very slight differences at best
ok that's the end of ep 1, I'll probably finish watching the dub later
it is still so surreal to me that you can now watch Vox Machina speaking like 9 different languages 😂
