I love that I can tell exactly how attention-needy each kin is because it directly impacts how I feel
because as Lute I was like "eh whatever" and as Lucifer I'm like "yeah I really like talking to people :3" while as Sherlock I'm over here like "sOMEONE PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO ME. I NEED ENRICHMENT. B O R E D."

I did not think I would be BBC Sherlockposting in the year 2023, but here we are. This is mostly an Ace Attorney post, but I had some thoughts about two comparable plot points in the two series that I wanted to write down. Those two plot points being Edgeworth's "Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth Chooses Death" note and Sherlock's fake suicide in "The Reichenbach Fall". Characters faking their own deaths is a very fun (albeit angsty) trope.
Now, Edgeworth's note can be taken in two different ways. He was very particular about his word choice. "Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth Chooses Death." Obviously, the conclusion that is the easiest to draw is that Edgeworth killed himself. The alternative reading is metaphorical, places emphasis on the first word, and is either what Edgeworth meant or what he pretended he had meant all along. Phoenix told him to "kill the prosecutor inside him", and he took this advice in the absolute worst way possible. Edgeworth absolutely is dumb enough to think that leaving a cryptic note and disappearing off the map for a year wouldn't result in his friends thinking something terrible had happened to him.
Justice For All comes across as much less mean-spirited than The Empty Hearse for a couple of reasons. The first is Sherlock's intent. He clearly faked his own death. He then told many people who weren't his best friend/roommate. He even showed up at his own funeral. There were plenty of chances for him to show John that he was alive and he just doesn't. It is fairly easy to argue that Edgeworth simply didn't realise his friends and loved ones thought he was dead. For a lawyer, he's pretty dense. World's Greatest Detective Sherlock is also bad at emotions, but the fact that he attended his own funeral makes it harder to make this argument. That just feels a bit cruel.
The second way in which Sherlock's plot is a bit harder to enjoy isn't character related. Sherlock is riddled with queerbaiting, but The Empty Hearse also features mockery of the Sherlock fanbase itself in the form of Anderson's - Anderson being a pathetic unlikeable police officer - obsession with Sherlock's survival. Meanwhile, Ace Attorney leans into the gay lawyer stuff. It doesn't come across as queerbaiting - they're bad at figuring out their feelings. Wrightworth is practically canon for a reason.
I enjoy both of these series very much, though I haven't seen much of Sherlock in years.
