After a raid of a hardware store or three, they manage to hotwire the portable radio with a better battery and start tuning in on the 13.8 MHz frequency. They manage to connect by the 28th, the staticky voice over the line clearing into Akane's expectant one.
>>Ren! Finally, I was getting worried--<< she cries, and Ren releases a held breath. >>Did everything work out?<<
"Yeah," Ren says, huddled close to Arsene's side. The persona's wing was draped over his side, and they were sitting on the wired-off balcony, hot tea in hand. "The battery should work now. How are you, Akane?"
>>We're good, we're good. Cassandra is awesome, and my predictions have become much better than before -- she's still too weak to constantly materialize, but you said that was normal...?<<
"Oui; it will take some time. The presence of the world makes materializing difficult until ye get used to the feeling. Give her some more time." Arsene agrees, and they talk around niceties and well-wishes in a careful way, as if neither wants to really broach any deeper topics. Arsene's shadow friends apparently settled in nicely, the alice and bugbear pretty good healers, and one of the shogun decided to join Zenkichi on his outdoor-adventures while the other and the nekomata joined the kitchen staff. Akane's trusty shiisha guard had sprained an ankle and was resting, and she was vastly unimpressed by its replacement. Kasumi, Sumire and Cendrillon were settling in slowly as well, though Sumire was rather sickly and weak, and Ren grimaced, the aftertaste of bless forever burned into his mind by now. Kasumi started to tag along with Zenkichi as well, as Akane told him, and had started up a hoard of different soda's Cassandra could identify the effects of as being against brainwashing and forget.
He can't fault her.
>>Dad wants to raid Nagoya's settlement at the beginning of spring,<< Akane whispered lowly. Ren's breath hitches, and Arsene's wing winds closer around his form. >>He said-- he said that destabilizing the council now would be too dangerous because of the winter. What... what happened in Nagoya, Ren?<<
"...do me a favor, Akane, and don't get close to Takuto Maruki, under any circumstances." Ren said, voice low as well, dire. "And keep the Yoshizawas away from him. That man is... delusional, and dangerous."
A shuddery intake of breath. >>Got it. Anyways, I'm not hearing any music on your end, is it too early for your band to play? Or was it a Christmas thing? It had sounded nice.<<
The change in topic was kind of forceful, and suddenly Ren almost wished that Akane would stayed on the topic of Nagoya. "I, that. Akane, there's no... it's just me and Arsene," Ren finishes with, softly.
There's silence on the line.
>>...what?<< Akane asks, voice wobbly. >>But, but-- you're in a city! You've got to be part of a settlement or a group or something! You can't just... be all on your... own...<<
The mademoiselle sounds close to crying, Arsene remarks, silently.
"It's possible that there's more people hiding, but it's just us. We found a hotel and got a room with gas, and we raided a music store for a phonogram a few weeks ago. Ever since Nagoya, it's just been us." Ren says, softly.
"And we're okay," Arsene adds, when Akane stays silent. The line goes dead, and Ren wonders if that would be it for today, when static buzzes and someone else taps into their connection.
>>Sorry, sorry, Akane's not... she doesn't do well with being alone,<< Zenkichi's voice says, kind of scratchy.
Ren laughs, hollow. "Can't say I fault her for it. Apparently I don't do well with being alone either." He huffs. Arsene's thrumming in worry.
>>Nagoya's not your fault, kid. And neither is it the Yoshizawas'.<< Zenkichi says, because apparently he's psychic nowadays. His voice clears a little. >>It's only you two, then?<<
"Us and the many infected, thought we think that there's at least one more person or group in the east." Arsene agrees.
>>You're not too fond of figuring out if they're friends or foe, eh? Can't say I fault you for it. You at least got a good setup?<<
"High altitude with a barricaded door, weapons close by, gas and batteries. We're self-sufficient in the building except for a weekly grocery run. There's a hot spring nearby. And we got music." Ren adds, and Zenkichi whistles, low.
>>Sounds like a cozy little lair. You know, I had been uncertain if you'd actually make it to Tokyo, but by this point I think you're probably the best chance we have of findig possible authorities to help.<<
...what?
"What?" Ren asks, not liking the sound of it.
Zenkichi sighs, weary. >>I told you I was secret police, before? That makes me slightly more prepared for such a situation than others, and right now the most important thing is to actually set up communication across the country again. By radio would be preferable, but runners or-- fliers would also do it. I have no idea what happened to the radio network, or the internet, but as soon as we got it up and running again, the sooner we can deal with people like Maruki. Who knows how many settlements or survivors in general have been drawn into such a situation? I hadn't wanted to burden you with it before, because frankly you're not a trained officer or even twenty yet, but.<< He pauses. >>You got out of Nagoya, and you're well on your way to Tokyo, and Arsene managed to hotwire a portable radio unit, so.<<
Ren's silent for a moment. "...so you want us to what, continue being a runner from one city to the next?" His voice cracks, because -- because--
>>No! I want you to get to Tokyo and establish a network if your portable unit still works, and I want you to find officers and tell them of my plan! God, Ren, I'm not going to send you out to your possible death when I know that you only started that journey to get to Tokyo.<<
The sudden panic that had gripped him starts to subside, and Ren takes a deep breath. Arsene is the one to answer: "We can do that. Any possible names?"
Tokyo MP's First Division is their answer, specifically a man named Megure or anyone from his office. Zenkichi'd worked with them once before, apparently, and they were the cleanest cops he knew about. Ren reluctantly agreed without any guarantees, and then their talk shifted to other topics again, until it circled back to Nagoya. Ren both didn't want to and had to know --
"So Takuto's still leading the settlement?"
>>I'm sorry. Yes; removing him now would destabilize all of the people, and we can't afford to do so in the middle of winder. I heard about ... a lot of what he's done from the Yoshizawas, but is there... anything... you need to add? He will face justice as soon as the snow melts. I'll look into it personally, but. Uh.<<
Ren somehow manages to laugh, even if it's a short, sharp thing, but listening to Zenkichi bumble about like that was nice, to hear the concern and the thinly-veiled anger. Even if he doesn't think so, that man is a good father, Arsene says in their mind, claws drawing patterns into Ren's knee to calm the both of them down. Ren shifts around, leaning more fully against his persona, the radio held between them. Zenkichi lets him think in silence, before Ren closes his eyes. There's a lot of things he'd want Takuto Maruki to stand trial for, though he can imagine what Kasumi would've told the officer in her somewhat-blunt manner. "...the settlement cannibalized shadows," is what Ren ends up whispering. "I dunno if the 'Sumis already told you that, but. Um. Shadow flesh seems to be imbued with elemental essence, and it's... addicting to people. It's--" the eligor, desperately attacking Ren.
"Takuto uses the 'meat' with his mutated-plant vitamins to keep the settlement under his well-meaning control ...people will show withdrawal symptoms."
Ren can hear a shuttered breath across the radio, a thing of static. >>That's... Jesus. Hearing it a second time doesn't make it easier. It also... it also did something to you persona users, right?<<
Ren hums. "The vitamins have a... forget ailment effect; it literally made me forget that Arsene's... you forget how to summon a persona. But that's not-- there's half-feral shadows stalking around the settlement in Nagoya. They deserve to know what happened to their friends and family. They're scared of Takuto, but." He falls silent again, huddling even closer into Arsene's side, the memories haunting. After he doesn't speak for a while, Zenkichi sighs.
>>I'll look into what I can do, kid. You stay safe over there, yeah? Big guy--<< Arsene snorts, >>look after him, yeah? We'll talk again tomorrow, and I'll try to get my hands on the others so that you can also talk with them.<<
Ren agrees before the line falls dead, and he sighs, bone-weary. "...I just want it to be over," he says, not elaborating. Arsene thrums, lowly. I know. It will be, dear.
But when, is the question.
--
The next few days pass in a maudlin mood, until it is New Years and Arsene tugs Ren towards the shrine they'd entered the city from, basket in hand and both of them dressed in approximations of formalwear the persona had insisted on them wearing. Ren hadn't resisted, let himself be led to the shrine in something close to amusement after they'd bid goodbye to the nekomata and Sumire for the day, the radio left in their home.
They come to a halt before the torii gates, the red looking like blood between the white of the snow and the pink of the dawning sky. "I remember you talking about wishing on a good year at the shrines last year, before Yaldabaoth happened." Arsene admits, once they'd arrived. The persona is soft, inquisitive. "That hadn't quite worked out last year, but maybe now..." he trails off, and Ren blinks, surprised. He knows Arsene's interested in culture as a whole -- more so European than anything other -- but he's not expected that the persona would tug Ren to a shrine visit in the middle of an apocalypse for--
oh. Ren's expression softens. "I can walk you through the steps, though it's been a while since I've done this properly," he says, and Arsene churrs in delight. They spend the morning praying and reading fortune, have a nice lunch back inside the grounds where their fire pit sits undisturbed, and then hang prayers for their future up before leaving with the approaching twilight.
It's the best New Years Ren's had for a while.

The tiny author softly smiled as she walked, noting the change in the weather above. It was going to be a chilly night, wasn’t it?
She looked to her side, also noting the boy who walked beside her with a fox-like expression. For him to call her out, it was a change of pace; especially after their last encounter being so awkward. Eto tried not to think about it, if only to mimic Kaworu’s actions. He walked around without a care, so for a moment of peace, she would let him be.
“Say, Kaworu-kun...”
Tumblr media
“Might I ask your reasoning behind wanting to spend the afternoon with an old lady like myself? Ufufu...”
So much for letting him be.

⛨:WHAT WOULD THEY SACRIFICE THEIR LIFE FOR?
UUUHHHHHH
This is a hard question to answer cause there’s two ways he would sacrifice his life for: the first is being told to by higher authority and the second would be the rare but immense, raw emotion that explodes out of him. Throughout the anime and manga, Shinji has shown moments of rebellion against those who control him and acts completely on his own emotion. He does this to save his classmates and also tries to attack Gendo after his friend’s death. Shinji isn’t always under someone’s thumb, but most of the time he is. So if someone told him to sacrifice his life for whatever cause, he would of course question it, but somehow slip into an autopilot mode and obey. On the other hand, if someone he deeply cared about was in danger, he would try to help them, even if it meant taking his own life. We’ve seen that Shinji has had many opportunities to do this towards the end of the series, but refuses to act, so it is fair to state that him sacrificing his life for someone he cares about is rare.

Title: as the world caves in
Warnings: descriptions of violence, major character death

· · ─────── =^.^= ─────── · ·
It takes them three days to reach Tsu, during which Ren managed to both trap a fox and almost get mauled by a mutated human. It took Arsene slicing its head off with sharp feathers for it to finally die completely, and the adrenaline has left Ren shaking, even hours later. They're tired and wan and Arsene dematerializes once they notice movement in the distance. Ren holds up his hands, white cloth wound around them, and waves to catch the attention of a patrol of people, not daring to raise his voice. One of them hurries over, almost stumbling over his own two feet; it's a man, scruff around his chin and with long hair tied into a messy bun. "You're alive!" He hisses, and Ren nods, presents the trapped (currently unconscious) fox, and watches as the rest of the patrol hurries over.
"Damn," one of the women says. "Good catch!"
"Thank you," Ren demurs, voice catching because it's been three days since he's last spoke out loud. "I'm on my way to Tokyo; I was wondering if I could spend the night with you if possible."
The three glance between each other, before the first man nods. "We're not going to turn you away, especially if you can hunt a fox in that forest. Tokyo's a way off, though, kid."
Ren smiles wanly. "My family is there. I have to hope that they're still alive after the phone network went down."
He follows after them, learns that their names are Zenkichi, Chaco and Shiono. They're a group of survivors huddled up inside of what used to be a temple ground and complex, elevated enough that they can see the mutated approach. There's about fifty of them, surprisingly many, and Zenkichi informs him that Tsu had two other groups that got wiped out by infected. Sorrow lies deep within Zenkichi's eyes as he says it, and Ren murmurs condolences while he's being led into their camp. A girl a few years younger than Ren runs up towards them, eyes drawn into an anxious line and a crossbow clutched between her fingers. "Dad, you're back!" She shouts, and rushes at Zenkichi, clutching tightly at his clothes. A shadow follows after her, to Ren's surprise, its leg bandaged. It's a shiisha, scowl fierce as it eyes Ren.
"Akane," Zenkichi murmurs. "We didn't run into your predicted mutated. Don't worry."
Akane's eyes flash yellow as she stares at Ren. "Thank you," she tells him, and he stands there, kind of confused with his (now dead) fox. He blinks.
"You're... uh, welcome?" He says. Akane shakes her head.
"No, thank you. If you hadn't killed the human, then dad would've..." she trails off, losing her voice. Chaco shakes his head.
"Forgive young Akane; she has been having visions ever since the cataclysm. They've proved to be dangerously accurate from such things as the weather to the erasure of Tsu-Yomi and Tsu-Fuku a few weeks before." Those had been the two other camps. Apparently Akane had seen the dangerous mutated maul her father, but Ren had successfully killed it instead.
He nods, mouth drawn into a thin line before following the people and lone shadow inside the main body of the temple. They show him towards a corner space one floor down, apologizing that they don't have any bedrolls anymore. Ren waves their concern away. He ends up helping prepare an early dinner, skinning his own fox with Shiono and a few others, blinking in surprise when he sees a kukuri-hime. "You're surprisingly friendly towards shadows," he remarks, and Shiono cants her head to the side and nods.
"Tsu-Yomi had been a shadow camp," she explains. "We've been trading goods and expertise ever since the cataclysm, so we weren't about to turn them away after they'd helped with setting up a rudimentary electrical generator. Don't hurt them, please."
"I wouldn't." Ren says, wondering if he should reveal Arsene or not. "Tell me more about Akane's abilities," he asks instead. "Maybe I can help."
Shiono eyes him for a long moment before giving him potatoes to peel, detailing how Akane and Zenkichi had come to Tsu on vacation and how lucky many of the people of Tsu-Aki were still alive because Zenkichi saved them. Apparently the man was a public security officer, which is just one step below military in how he was trained. They'd established Tsu-Aki three days after the cataclysm, lucky enough that the temple grounds had ample stores of rice and gardens that Ren hasn't seen. Akane started hearing voices and had grown feverish after she'd been bitten. "She's only been grazed, thankfully," Shiono said, or else the girl would be long dead. Her predictions had at first only amounted to the weather, but as she's grown stronger in health she's also grown better in her predictions. The shiisha followed her around as a guard, and most of the temple revered her.
Ren listens, quietly, and turns inwards. It sounds like she might have a persona.
That it does. A navigator-type, probably. Arsene agrees, curling around Ren's sternum to stave off the cold he feels. Thou want to help her?
Yes. But the others--
Will not be mad that thou would take time to help a fellow persona user, especially one who is younger than the Hermit, mon cher. A day or two shan't matter.
(Ren sighs, but he does end up spending two more days at the temple, helps Akane call for Cassandra and even cracks a smile when Zenkichi gets spooked by Arsene for the first time. He finds out that the whole bay area has managed to connect a radio frequency together, operating at 18.6 MHz. It usually broadcasts Akane's predictions for the weather, though the operators also talk to each other. Zenkichi is setting up a hidden channel as well, operating at 13.8 MHz, something Akane apparently insisted on. Ren is invited to both of them, if Tokyo manages to rebuild their radio. He's oddly touched. Akane ends up giving him a little omamori to remember her and Zenkichi by, and he, along with Shiono and Chaco, accompanies Ren to the outskirts of Tsu. Before Ren can leave, Zenkichi grabs him by the shoulder with a strength that could bruise bones. "Stay out of Nagoya, kid." He'd hissed, making Arsene bristle. Ren nodded, already knowing that he won't do that; he'd have to pass by the outskirts of the city at least, or else he'd loose too much time going all the way to Gifu.)

Hey guys, sorry for leaving so soon but I’ve decided Ryoji would fit in better in another group. Unfortunately that group so closed so I’m going to have end all of the threads from Citta prematurely. If you want to keep following this account to read my threads though, go ahead. I’ll be over at @hiraeth-academy which is a newly starting MFRP with an academy setting. We’d love to get more persona roleplayers if you want to keep interacting with Ryoji.
Otherwise if you still want to interact with me, I’m always free for plans on my other characters. @kishou-san @lbow @xcoriate @kisshibae @shiisha @owl15 @kuroashu

white haired anime boys squad up
➤ :: @shiisha
rare were the days in which katsuhira could find solace anymore.
ever since the kiznaiver experiment began, there was almost always someone around him, whether it be tenga or chidori or the entire group at once. his only safe haven was in sleep, and even then, tenga was often loud enough to wake the dead with his snoring.
(he never did, as far as katsuhira knew.)
so, when his impromptu moment of reflection was abruptly cut short by the sound of approaching footsteps, katsuhira couldn’t help but sigh - a rarity from him, even if it was a decidedly neutral sigh. after all, he didn’t dislike the company of others, and recent events had given him a little too much to dwell upon.
Tumblr media
❝ oh, you... your hair is white too, huh? ❞ unlike katushira, however, this boy’s hair was entirely white. he wondered if perhaps this boy had also lost it all much as he did.

Yukio thought he was alone, but how can one truly be alone in such a city. There were people buzzing around every corner and crevice of this place. Sure, he was from a city so he should be able to cope with this feeling, however, the city he grew up in was a lot more familiar than this one. Hive City was new to him and the fact that he didn’t know where he was and didn’t know anyone here was quite stressful. "I hope my brother didn't get dragged into this mess."

@shiisha
She had only been out to complete a quick errand, delivering a new short story to her publication company. Today was, however, not the author’s day; she would have sent the manuscript electronically, but the wi-fi at her house had been tampered with. That is to say, Rohan had messed with it to the point of having to call someone to come fix it.
Her new publishing company was hardly as lax with her due dates as Shoeisha had been in Tokyo, but that was only a minor annoyance. Even on days like this, when she could deliver things by hand, she could handle it. Despite two hour traffic, a taxi driver who smoke cigars, and forgetting her ID card at the house, Takatsuki Sen handled it all with a smile.
Eto was annoyed, walking the streets of Sector 4, then Sector 3, as she returned. A walk would clear her mind, that’s what she believed; two men had tried to mug her, and an ice cream vendor on a corner had spilled mint chocolate chip ice cream on her new shirt as she had been trying to cross a street.
Even half-ghouls had bad days.
The sun had set nearly an hour ago, and she was only about fifteen minutes from her house -- taking some alleys as a short cut helped, but, she could smell the scent of non-humans in the air. Something was riling up ghouls, and other creatures up it seemed. Were it something caused by anything unnatural, she would know about it, so she ignored it.
That was, until a particularly familiar scent attracted her attention -- that was... That young boy? Kaworu Nagisa? The night wasn’t through with her yet, she mused.
No, definitely not, she realized as she came upon a strange scene: a feral, starving something (not a ghoul, but not a human despite its looks), and the teen in question, Kaworu, looking pleasant as always. He was about to be that thing’s dinner, and yet he didn’t seem to have a care in the world.
Eto sighed as she took another step further.
Tumblr media
With more force than her petite body would be assumed to have, the author Takatsuki Sen thrust her purse right into the face of the ghoul. The hit was precise and controlled enough to send the ghoul skidding back into the shadows of the alley. All that was left was a surprised whimper and the sound of retreat.
Eto sighed, turning to Kaworu.
“Now -- just what do you think you’re doing?”
