KDrama Meme: (04/20) Dramas → Doom At Your Service (2021) ↳ “I really... I really, really want to live. I... I want to live with you, Sun Kyung, my aunt, Ji Na, and everyone else that I love. I really do. I really want... I want to live so badly.”

Myul Mang lived, after death. He lived. That is all that matters.
I love doom at your service so much😭 I'm rewatching it and I think I'll post think pieces on it after each episode.
I've seen so many reviews about people not enjoying the second half of this show and how a stellar cast was wasted on bad writing but for me, this show works even though I agree that the writing really was lacking in places.
It's funny how sometimes the things we like best are not the things that are perfect, but the ones that are flawed and imperfect and slightly inadequate.
It's so hard to define what brings us joy and comfort and what we find irresistible sometimes.
It's like, why do I adore this show even though there are so many shows out there that are so much better? Why do I think so often of these characters in particular? Why do I keep coming back here?
One of my favorite aspects about DAYS is Seo In Guk as Myul Mang. His character is the bedrock of this show from which everything else springs. I love his cynicism, his pessimism, his pain, his intolerance, his indifference, his quiet, simmering anger, his inability to outgrow his annoyance at the world. I love his audacity, his attitude and his insistent desire to destroy everything. I love that he doesn't hold back and that he doesn't try to be other than what he is. I love how the world slowly enraptures him, how it quietly grasps him into its folds, and doesn't let go. I love how he slowly discovers the world.
Myul Mang's entire existence is in nothingness, and then he is slowly brought into life. It is the opposite of what humans experience, for him it is actually life after death.
Myul Mang is hands down my favourite thing about DAYS.
The only thing I wish for was I wish we could have gotten more of his backstory. I wish he had been given a tangible past, a story that would have made the audience aware of where he was coming from, and thus would have made his motivations clearer, so that we know where he is heading.
Myul Mang lived, after death. He lived. That is all that matters.

Sewool being a sporting/game manufacturing company on paper but in reality running the largest online gambling site in Korea............ someone with a bigger brain than me needs to see that this is just Seo Do Young's company sans a few details with an uglier (and i'd argue more f*cked up) CEO and no gay legal advisor. better yet someone with a bigger brain than me needs to start outlining that AU timeline crossover fic

Dramas 2023
Just some of my thoughts for some of the dramas of 2023...
-KING THE LAND !!!!! The natural chemistry between the main leads is just so so soooo real that it makes it hard to believe that they're "just friends" in reality; However, at the same time it makes sense, as both Junho and Yoona have been in the entertainment industry and have known each other for a long time (2pm and SNSD go wayyyy back, IYKYK). I'm kind of surprised it took them this long to meet for a drama project, but as a fan of both 2pm and SNSD, I'm so glad to see them both working together again. There are so many funny moments in this drama and the added sound effects and acting make some of the scenes so funny. I also like the easter eggs added in the drama haha. Definitely a feel-good drama. I ship the main leads..!! They already know each other so well and they're also starting to look the same haha. -See You in My 19th Life This series is based on the webtoon, and the drama was surprisingly not bad. Ahn Bo Hyun and Shin Hye Sun both are great together, and I feel like recently Shin Hye Sun has been typecasted into these somewhat typical bold, fearless characters that are also seemingly reflective of her own personality but in this drama I was able to kind of see somewhat of a different side to her (hard to explain hahah). And Ahn Bo Hyun...he's very versatile as an actor. And finding out that he's now dating Jisoo of BP...super unexpected haha !! The drama itself is somehow comforting with all the characters meshing well together. Pleasant~~
-Celebrity Hmmmmm this one was great but something about the female lead I can't put my finger on.. While I do feel like her acting has improved over the years and I see that in some scenes of this drama as well, there were parts where it just seemed flat but I'm not sure if it's just how her character was written. The storyline itself was definitely interesting nonetheless, and I didn't have much expectations going into it, but it does touch upon the effects of social media in modern times and I liked the mystery/thriller type of vibe.
-D.P. Star-studded cast; haven't watched this yet but excited to pick up where they left off for season 1.
-The Real Has Come The cast is talented and there are strong characters in this drama and lots of twists and funny moments. It's light and funny, but there's 50 episodes so there are definitely times where it's a bit draggy but also that's typical of any family dramas. -Oasis Jang Dong Yoon!!! Hahaha I think the cast did a great job with their portrayals though I feel like Jang Dong Yoon just has such a baby-face and looks like he wouldn't hurt a fly but he looked so cool playing this role as Lee Doo Hak. I liked the old-fashioned style of this drama as it took place in the 80s-90s Korea, so it was really refreshing to see the type of fashion, dialects and overall atmosphere during that time through this drama, and think about how much has changed. There were parts of the drama that felt a little repetitive, but I think overall the cast made up for it. -Apple of My Eye (금이야, 옥이야) Typical family drama, a little predictable but expected haha.

Bossam: Steal the Fate. 7-8
Story: 8-9
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Haechi (kdrama); Queen: Love and War (kdrama); 100 Days My Prince (kdrama)
What could of been an outstanding drama became only a mediocre historical drama for me. It fell into the draggy trap, with the repetitive back and forth that many dramas unfortunately fall into. There was many storylines that I felt was wasted and it just fell into a sour lump by the middle let half. It was sooo good too in the first half, especially with the chemistry between both Yuri an Jung ll Woo. I felt totally cheated too by that rushed ending. 🤬 In some ways I felt if they shortened the drama by editing it down some but working on a less rushed ending, this would’ve been a hit throughout. Nonetheless I still enjoyed it, just not as much as I thought I originally had in the first half.

SHIN HA HYUK & KIM YOUNG KWANG for ARENA's NOVEMBER ISSUE
"My character, ‘Seo Do-young,’ is black, and senior Ha-kyun’s character, ‘Han Dong-soo,’ is white. Two men meet for mutual benefit. On the outside, they act like they're partners, but they constantly criticize each other and feel the psychological pressure of not knowing when the other person might betray them. “I think you’ll be more immersed in ‘Biography of a Villain’ if you focus on what choices the two people make and what impact those choices will have.” - Kim Young Kwang

Asian male leads that went against the norms and redefined thirst traps for you?
For me it was lee joon gi from flower of evil! Who is the genius tell me!!! That decided to make this meticulous, detail oriented crafty man who is painted as a violent sociopath but turns out to be a huuuuuge softie in need of love and just wants to make his family happy and get some cuddles and stuff
my brain's a little too fuzzy right now so idk about going against the norms, but here's some favorite Characters That Are Just Hot
ma dong seok as yoon sang hwa | train to busan
Tumblr media
he loves his wife and unborn baby. he wears a fancy lil scarf. he'll punch you into the roof of a train car. the sheer bruhery of this guy.
jang hyuk as park gye won | bloody heart
Tumblr media
look this whole post could just be jang hyuk characters (his character in chuno i think is the quintessential definition of a thirst trap), but this character gets a special shout-out because he works the least sexiest outfit of Royal Minister for the duration of the drama and also the atrocities??
wi ha joon as choi do il | little women
Tumblr media
the clown wigs i wore throughout this entire drama because of this guy. sort of like a human trojan horse but snaccify it. being toxic in his little outfits 10/10
chen kun as ning yi | the rise of phoenixes
Tumblr media
mansplain. manipulate. malewife. "chen kun with long hair" is a Movement.
shin sung rok as kim seo jin | kairos
Tumblr media
when you like them flawed and morally ambiguous and in desperate need of a divorce. "i can fix him" but if fixing him required you to probably stab someone in an infinite time loop down the road
shin ha kyun as lee dong sik | beyond evil
Tumblr media
he's done nothing wrong in his entire life except for perhaps inspiring the thousands of morally ambiguous daddy complexes that emerged from this drama
BONUS! some ladies
ha ji won as sung nyang | empress ki
Tumblr media
she'll get your whole family killed and ruin your career and you'll thank her for it
lee si young as seo yi kyung | sweet home
Tumblr media
ma'am.
kim ok bin as taealha | arthdal chronicles
Tumblr media
she's scary (appreciative)

Immortal Being that Still Somehow has Parent Issues: Myul Mang/Doom (Doom at your Service) Lee Yeon & Lee Rang (Tale of the Nine Tailed) Jeong Gu-won (My Demon)
Added trauma flavour: Parent was murdered in front of them (**Still counts if they survived the murder Parent tried to murder them Dying from seemingly incurable disease which makes their parents/guardian sad (If your parents are alive, you must pay for it by dying yourself) Adoptive parent/stepparent is THE WORST
Somehow has normal, alive parents: Lee Jun-ho (Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Has no backstory at all. We only meet his older sister and hear nothing about his childhood.) Shin Ha-ri (Business Proposal, her family is refreshingly normal, right down to her brother being sent out to find her when she's drunk) Oh Han-byeol (Sh**ting Stars, Again, we know almost nothing about her family, only that she has twin sisters. But she doesn't appear to have childhood trauma.) Park Yeon-woo (The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, her mom being annoyed at her for something that is a crime doesn't count as bad parenting) Lee Young-joon/Sung-hyun (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, his trauma comes from a kidnapper, his parents faced a pretty impossible situation and did their best. They clearly love their kids) Baek Hyun-woo (Queen of Tears, nothing wrong with them out of the ordinary and they are in the drama a significant amount.) Ha Eun-gyeol (Twinkling Watermelon, very loving parents and the deafness and their reliance on him is not anyone's fault)
*Counting her as an orphan even though she gets her parents back after 20 years, she spent her childhood orphaned. ***This character is tricky because I understand why her mother wanted nothing to do with her, but her trying to manipulate the dad and also saying he didn't raise her properly made me so angry. Uncatagorized due to lack of clarity on parents: Soundtrack #1, Hospital Playlist, Happiness

South Korea’s hostile relationship with North Korea, combined with national pride, sensationalism and the understandable fear of its nuclear-armed, totalitarian neighbor, have created a massive appetite for what Jay Song, a professor of Korean studies at Melbourne University, describes as “misery porn.” In her academic work, Song writes of a “savage-victim-savior” model in which a savage like Kim Jong Un commits atrocities against an innocent, helpless victim like Park who eventually escapes their bad situation thanks to an outside liberator (often white, usually Christian). To me, Song put it more bluntly: “They want to pity some helpless and innocent-looking refugees abused by a fat, ugly dictator.” Misery porn, like any form of sensationalism, opens donor wallets and generates clicks. These stories don’t just sell inside South Korea; there’s a huge market for them in the U.S. as well. Park’s 2015 book was one of five defector memoirs released that year. Defectors like Shin Dong-hyuk, who escaped from a North Korean prison camp, and Joseph Kim, who survived protracted starvation and homelessness before eventually crossing into China, have given TED talks and scored lucrative book deals. Human rights researchers and journalists alike, meanwhile, are always hungry for stories from inside the Hermit Kingdom. Defectors, Song says, at times receive payment from academics, activists and even some journalists for interviews: between $30 and $300 per hour, “depending on the quality of their information.” The more closely the defector’s story fits the misery porn template, the more valuable the story. Even small sums of money can make a big difference to defectors in South Korea; studies show they experience widespread discrimination, suffer higher rates of unemployment and are often stuck working menial jobs for low wages. Worse still, these defectors often arrive in debt to the smugglers who made their escape possible, and their inexperience with South Korean capitalism leaves them vulnerable to scams. Stories like Park’s that perfectly fit the genre — attractive victim, monstrous crimes and appropriate gratitude — can result in million-dollar contracts and international fame. Many of these North Korean horror stories, however, fall apart under more careful scrutiny — not because the nation is a secret workers’ paradise, but because the people who propagate the stories have a political and financial interest in them, and don’t do the incredibly difficult work of checking all the facts. “The trouble with North Korean defector testimony is that there’s no way to check whether or not it’s true,” Song says. “It’s often found unverifiable and not reliable. Even the U.N. stopped using defector accounts as evidence.”
