Dracmon looks up at him from the floor, big eyes full of sorrow. "You can't just be angry anymore Kaito. Look where your anger leads you." The defeat stings worse than the bruises on his knuckles. Losing over and over and over even when he wins the fight. "I don't know what else I can be."

I am once again writing about this one particular scene. I've posted the first part for Survive Week last year. These are meant to be excerpts from my longer fic but I can’t help it.

Chapter 5: Something in the Air

Shuuji knows something is amiss when he catches Syakomon let out an almost imperceptible sigh of relief. He’s lucky that the viscous surface of Syakomon’s slimy green body betrays her—the quiver of the otherwise silent exhale sends a faint, wobbly shockwave across her skin, and she jiggles ever so slightly in her shell, as though somebody’s just set down a cautious bowl of lime-flavored jello.

Supposedly, the worst is over, but Shuuji can't shake the feeling that there's something the Kemonogami aren't telling him.

oh BOY the editing situation was a doozy. granted, i was also busy with work, but even then this chapter needed a TON of reworking, much much more than chapter 4 did. like i said on ao3, it got to the point where this chapter was so long that i had to split it in two.

i also mentioned that this chapter marks the beginning of the second half of this fic. chapters 1-4 make up part one, which i'd summarize as "how did we get here?", and then from 5-8, the focus will be "what happens next?". it helped a LOT to recontextualize chapters 5-7 (now 5-8) as an answer to chapters 1-4, and i think it'll make editing easier going forward; i have much more direction now and a better idea of what needs to be expanded on and what needs to be cut.

unfortunately, like i said, i had to omit a lot of saki-centric stuff. she is the scariest character for me to write, and i think i need to progress more thru my replay of truthful before i feel confident enough to write from her perspective. it works out anyway, because the part i cut had shuuji taking a very passive role and just observing interactions between saki and floramon, and it felt very drawn-out and unnecessary. this is my favorite cut segment tho

im really hoping to be able to figure out what an aoi-miu-saki dynamic looks like as i get more comfortable writing the three of them. i think it could be really fun. also i think it would be so funny if miu and saki bring out a mischievous side of aoi that would otherwise not exist. much to think about.

anyway. another challenge i had with editing this chapter was the topography of the beach area the group hangs out at before moving on to the shopping district and apartment complex. for some reason i was convinced the rocky beach area was like.. up on a cliffside? but then i looked at the map and got REAL confused. the beach is super super narrow, and that was really inconvenient when i needed shuuji to be somewhere relatively out of the way, where he could have a conversation with agumon that takuma cannot hear, while still being able to see takuma. so thats why i spent an hour and change squinting at the tiniest png of the map and reorganizing where people spend their time

i didnt make many changes; mostly i just moved people around. the one thing that i DID change though was the placement of the waterway entrance. i have NO IDEA why the game has it in the middle of the fucking ocean. like i know theres a tunnel there, but surely the entrance to that tunnel isn't underwater right? i then poured another hour and change learning about waterways, trying to figure out where it made the most sense to put the exit before remembering that it doesn't matter because the digital world doesn't play by human world rules. oops! it was still super interesting though! please look up 'tokyo g-cans' if you ever get the chance, its fucking fascinating. if i ever go back to japan id like to go down there, maybe.

obligatory commentary about the map:

oh my god it seems too big for what we actually see but im not a cartographer so i dont know for sure

the shopping district/apartment complex is visible from the beach but i feel like it shouldn't be: on the map it looks like it's on a cliff face while from the beach it looks like it's shore level

i've been reading half the green patches as dense tree cover but now that i think about it, that might just be open grassland. oops. it's all trees now.

i wish we could go to the sandy beach areas to the north and east ends of the island!!! that could've been fun!

i really appreciate that the second island is shaped vaguely like a beluga

in other news, agumon was much easier to write than i was worried he would be, and it was nice to work out how he felt about what happened in the waterway. one thing ive noticed about agumon on a second truthful run is that he and takuma are equally awful about pushing down their own feelings for the sake of the ones of their friends. a lot of the others seem to view agumon as the guy who is always Staying Silly , no thoughts head empty. while i DO think that that's a genuine part of his personality, i think it also happens sometimes that he uses that image to downplay his concerns.

my favorite part to write this chapter was labramon's dialogue at the end. and also baby stats. baby stats was the ONE THING i REFUSED to cut. non-negotiable. it's been in my notes since the beginning and digimon survived all edits of this chapter, and i was DETERMINED to keep it.

all right im getting sleepy and i want to post this chapter and then go to bed. as usual please dont be afraid to leave a comment, i looooove finding out people's favorite parts, and im still curious about your Gamer Theories, especially now that i think what i'm foreshadowing is becoming clearer and clearer >:3c

First impression? I knew he was going to be cool. That hair? That jacket? That KUNEMON? When I found out he was rude, it was all over.

When I started to truly like him? Honestly don't have a good answer for this lol. I thought he was great from Part 1. His emotional spiral was visible from orbit and I was already stressed about saving him by the time I fought the first spider Kemonogami boss.

7. A quote I remember? [in response to Takuma asking if he knew which Kunemon was real in Part 5]

"Sorta? I couldn't understand what the others were saying, just the real one, so."

I just love the image of Ryo surrounded by the sounds of kew kew and being totally lost until he hears his kew kew.

21. When was he happiest?

I think it's got to be some time when he was able to just vibe with Kunemon. Like when he's shit-talking Takuma and Kunemon is like "Kew" and Ryo is like "haha so true", or when he surprised Kunemon with a gift he made himself and it was training equipment specifically designed for Kunemon's body. [no idea how that works but I love it]

22. When was he at his lowest?

Aside from the obvious answer of Part 3, I think there's a lot to be said about how Ryo tries to drag everyone down to his level in Part 1 and 2. Like he just can't stand that the others have hope. I like imagine this betrays some deep-seated trauma with getting his hopes up about his mom because of adults sugarcoating the updates on her health too much early on. Regardless of if you like that headcanon, I still love how fucked up Ryo gets in the early chapters.

13. Favorite friendship

Honestly? Perfect tie between Syakomon and Takuma. I love how Syakomon is her only-slightly-less-unhinged collaborator and hypemon, and I love how Takuma is the only human who really consistently treats Miu like a fellow human.

18. How do I think they were as a kid?

Talked with some friends a while ago about how fucked up it is that Miu's parents believed some random stalker over their own daughter, and it makes me think she was always a "problem child". High energy, low impulse control, very little intuitive understanding of social norms.

Feel free to read that any kind of neurodivergent way you'd like.

26. When were they the most "themselves"?

No moment sticks out in my mind for this question as intensely as when Miu gave a prayer to the old school near the end of Truthful route, thanking it for keeping everyone safe and eventually convincing everyone to do the same. It was just so earnest and heartfelt and uncorrupted by any worry about how Kaito or anybody else would judge the behavior. Love that for her.

30. Funniest scene they had?

13. Favorite friendship

Well since I guess I'm just straight-up a Saoki shipper at this point, I'll say Miu. I spent a lot of time thinking about their relationship back when I wrote Not My Problem, and there's a lot of potential there that the structure of the game itself doesn't really allow to get explored. They kind of both have the same deal going on emotionally, not feeling like they have a place in their communities and lacking independence, and yet outwardly they have entirely opposite vibes (always a fun dynamic). They never really talk about their feelings with each other, so you'd think they wouldn't get along because of those opposite vibes, yet they seem to really enjoy each other's company from what little we see in the prologue and a few Free Action conversations where they both talk about how the other seems like they'd be cool to be friends with.

Every time I replay Survive, that first conversation they have about going to see the Kemonogami realm means so much to me.

18. How do I think they were as a kid?

Saki strikes me as a very quiet, antisocial kid. Like she made friends relatively easily, but never because she was the outgoing one. Obviously that's changed by the time we meet her, but Saki always feels like someone who has changed a lot even before the game begins.

26. When were they the most "themselves"?

Bro this is such a hard mode question for Saki lmao

The first answer that pops to mind is when Takuma gets back from the human world and he talks to Saki and she's super casual about telling him about her surgery and they also just tease Aoi a bit together. The usual secrecy isn't something Saki actually wants, it's something she thinks she needs.

30. Funniest scene they had?

Well, if it was just about a single line, I'd say when Minoru shows up on the bridge in Part 2 trying to act all brave and she's just like "When did you grow some balls, Minoru!?" but it's not exactly a funny scene overall so

Going to go with when you find her snacking on some nuts and then when Aoi asks about the missing nuts she's just like "woah look what I just found this exact second!" and throws them at Takuma.

Behind some little girls (Miu) is an overprotective big brother (Kaito).

Behind some overprotective big brothers is a more easygoing but easily more savage brother figure (Takuma) armed with a baseball bat, a bamboo stick, pepper spray and a fire-breathing baby dinosaur (Agumon) that can potentially become a giant fire-breathing undead dinosaur skeleton (SkullGreymon) if you piss off both of them.

I really dig qinglongmon for Miu, since syakomon's name sake is based on shagokai, which is a family of clams that has under its ranks the hippopus hippopus (also known as strawberry clam and is considered a delicacy, btw). This clam's name in Japanese is shagou, which is one reading of the kanji 蜃. Incidentally, 蜃, when read as shin, can also refer to a myth from Chinese mythology about shape-shifting clam monsters that can transform into dragons and are believed to create mirages. Qinglongmon being one of the four great dragons is a perfect nod to this myth.

In Chapter 9 I think, Miu says Kaito is the one who depends on her and not the other way around and while Miu says he uses her as an excuse to hurt people, I don’t think it’s simply that, I feel like he uses the idea of “protecting Miu” as a security net of sorts, I’m aware of why Katio is overprotective of Miu (and for very good reason LORD these kids went through a really bad situation) and maybe it’s because I played Wraithful first. But I’d like your thoughts on this cause I feel like I’m onto Something.

I originally wanted to save this ask until I finish the Harmonious route, since I know the route would focus a lot on Kaito given that he's essentially to Harmonious what Aoi is to Wrathful (yeah, I've been spoiled--not that I mind, because I also guessed as much). However, seeing that I won't be able to finish the game anytime soon due to work and other stuff, I think I'll answer with my current knowledge and assumptions (since I feel bad making you wait as well). I'll probably update this post once I finish Harmonious someday. More under the cut.

I agree. While there's truth to what Miu said in chapter 9, it doesn't just simply boil down to what she believes--Kaito's brotherly affection for Miu isn't less valid just because he uses Miu to feel better about himself (especially since most of Dracumon's evolutions revolve around Kaito wanting to protect Miu--IMO he wouldn't be able to pull it off if Kaito didn't truly love Miu and want to protect her).

I'm not sure what you exactly mean by Kaito using Miu as a "security net of sorts", but I personally think it's a weird combination of Kaito revolving his identity around being a good big brother to Miu (and that not being able to protect Miu = his biggest failure) regardless of how Miu feels about it, and Kaito basically having violent tendencies to vent his emotions. For the latter, I understand that it might be very frustrating for him to have a venting method(?) that is largely frowned upon in general, let alone in a society that favors repressing your emotions as to not inconvenience other people (the Harmonious route, by the way, is called 調和ルート in Japanese). In a way, Kaito does use this whole protecting his younger sister as a justification to vent his anger as well (kinda "I'm violent, yes, but at least for a good reason"?). And I think that's what Miu means by him using her as an excuse to hurt other people.

Just a brief interaction from my main Digimon Survive fic. This happens late in the story where Kaito, Miu and Shuuji are temporarily living with Miyuki and the Prof.

Akiharu turns off the stove as Miu places the last plate at the table. "Breakfast is ready. Would you mind waking them up?"

She wanders over to the doorway where her older brothers are still dead to the world. Dracmon and Lopmon wrapped in gangly arms like comfort blankets. For a brief moment, she is struck with the memory of her mother's gentle hands, warm on her little shoulders. And her sweet voice. "Miu, love. Wake up."

Back before, when they were happy. Really truly happy. A motherly love that isn't reserved for just mothers. Because the Professor is patient with them and Miyuki wakes them in the same way. She wants to be gentle too. And kind. She wants to welcome her new found family into the waking world with all the love she can muster.

She takes a running start and jumps.

"Wake up sleepy heads!"

I actually think Miu/Saki is extremely cute as an idea. I don't really see Miu get shipped with anybody all that often, but there was a bit of unironic Kaito/Miu posting on Twitter back when the game first came out, and even as far as incest ships go that's the most cursed shit I've ever seen in my life lol

Weird headcanon

She got really into reading about marine biology in the year between Moral ending and reuniting Syakomon. Nothing too technical, just like checking out big books of fun facts about shellfish from the library.
