I promise I'll be back on the 24th at the latest, I just have so much to do right now. I just did summer cleaning of my apartment, cleaning the outside windowsills and glass, I'm collabing on a children's book with someone (hopefully that'll work out), I'm giving all sims likes and dislikes, there's just so much to do and not nearly enough time in the day 😩

Hello, tanuki!
I do so adore your blog. You select the most interesting patterns and colours to showcase; it’s a feast for the eyes and brain!
I understand this may be a liiiil outside your wheelhouse, but as Goggle continues to degrade, I thought I’d have less frustration searching elsewhere: is there a Japanese equivalent to White Tie dress?
Thank you very much for all your work!
—shmoo
Hiiii your ask sat in my inbox for so long I apologize T_T
As anglo-saxon "white tie" expects super formal gala type of dress, same goes for Japanese hyper formal events.
Nowadays, most Japanese people would more easily favor Western style attire, but if choosing kimono, top two rows of pic below show equivalents:
Tumblr media
Irotomesode for married women / women of a certain age. Kurotomesode could be worn in an official setting, but for a more light-hearted gala, wearer would present herself as pretty "traditional" minded if picking a kurotomesode imo (?I don't know it could work for older women though?)
Furisode, THE best choice hands down for young women / artists of all ages. Bring all the bling!!!
Formal hômongi is a great option, allowing more expression than demure irotomesode (tbh hômongi is probably the closest thing to a Western cocktail dress ^^)
Men do not have as many options sadly: 紋付羽織袴 montsuki-haori-hakama attire is pretty similar in formality to the classical American white tie. This formal wear pairs, as name stresses, haori (with tassel haori-himo, see different types here) + nagagi (men kimono) + hakama.
Kuromontsuki (black base montsuki, the most formal) or iromontsuki (colored montsuki) are both acceptable. Choices in fabrics, patterns, and colors would show wearer's style.
For men and women alike, the more formal the event is, the more mon (crest) garments presents (5 crests being the maximum). Crest should be dyed into the fabric (not outlined with thread which is the less formal way the wear crest).
Hope that helps ;)

My mum and I were talking about old cartoons we both watched as kids, and she didn't know what I was talking about when I said, "The show with the white marshmallow thing," she thought I was talking about Shmoo, but NO, IT WAS THESE GUYS
Tumblr media
GLEEP AND GLOOP
Fucking....look at them. They're fully responsible for my love of shapeless characters whose entire personality is "has eyes" and "squishy"
No wonder I love the Fresno night crawlers, they're basically Gleep and Gloop with legs

Here's the next pages of "sburb for dummies."
And this is mainly just how to enter the medium.

Also, yes, I drew a shmoo.
Breaking it is actually somewhat of a reference to a moment from a simpsons tree house of horror" segment that parodies "a clockwork orange", where moe gets his shmoo statue broken after jimbo throws it at him.
That moment in that segment always makes me laugh, so, thought I'd reference it for humors sake.

Friday, you’d think it’d be easy, cuz it should be. It’s passed noon and I’m ready to day drink.
One I can’t keep focused to save her soul. One just flat out does not care, about just the school assignments not even more lol, and if the boy rams his bike into my ankles ONE more time, I’m liable to chuck it out the door and into the forest to die, forever.

So, Ritalin makes me feel how neurotypical people must feel all the time. I'm so jealous. It's wearing off now but man in the time it was effective, my memory was better, I could start and end tasks easily and even multitask, I could focus, it made my brain "quiet" if that makes sense. The short acting one only works for about 4 hours but I got a ton of stuff done in that time, though I did prioritize my very dusty and messy flat so to see if it helps with building I'll have to wait until tomorrow 😂 But I don't react negatively to it and my posts should resume either tomorrow or the day after, depending on if I get to playing today! (You're all caught up)

10, 11, and 17 for the writer ask please!
Hi Shmoo! Thanks for the ask! :D
10. Where do you like to write?
Mostly while sitting on my couch! I've got great natural light in my living room, and usually I can convince my cat to keep me company when I work there <3
11. Most bizarre idea for writing you’ve had?
I'm not really sure what even counts as bizarre at this point lmao. Buuuut probably the trope-filled "identity porn royalty AU cabin fic. With dragons" (thanks mandy!) dicktim fic that I've been working on for a while now...
17. Search for the word “bird” in your wip and post the sentence.
"The last thought that crossed Dick’s mind before the pain and shock took him was that he’d always wanted to see the world from a bird’s point of view - just not like this."
Which is also from the fic mentioned in answer 11

KIDS: T. Jost I BLURB
Tumblr media
Words: 1K
Summary: You’d never wanted kids. Never. But seeing Tyson with kids had you feeling different.
Author’s note: @going-full-shmoo and I had a conversation that resulted in this. I’m just going to say that I’m sorry in advance. Unedited until further notice.
“Don’t give him any babies!” you warn the girls as you walk into Gabe and Mel’s living room, sending a look to the guys as well, all standing around EJ who was on uncle duties, holding Linnea in his big arms.
“What? Why?” Gabe asks, chuckling, his gaze moving towards Tyson who was not far behind you.
“Her uterus goes into - I quote - existential crisis every time I interact with someone under the age of ten, making her question everything she’s ever known,” Tyson smirks, before giving you a teasing a look and strolling over to EJ and Linnea. You fall into the plush couch between Mel and Aleksandra, deflating like a floatie after a full summer in the pool. Luckily EJ wasn’t ready to give up his duties yet.
“How’s it going?” Mel laughs, smirking just like your boyfriend.
“I am in a constant battle with my uterus, what do you think?” you huff, looking over at Tyson who’s now found a toddler to play with, wincing at the sight and the fluttering feeling it gave you.
“Who’s winning?” Aleks asks, looking between yourself and Tyson.
“It sure as hell ain’t me,” you groan, making the two women laugh.
“What’s going on with her?” Ashley asks as she comes over to you and the other girls, baby on her arm. She looks straight at Mel, asking her, instead of the slumping form of hormones that is yourself.
“Her uterus is trying to convince her to get pregnant, and Tyson isn’t helping her case,” Mel explains, running a hand over your hair and nodding to Tyson who was now making faces at Linnea, the cause of the small giggles that filled the room.
“I thought you didn’t want kids,” Ashley states the obvious, turning her attention back to you with a smirk on her lips.
“So did I,” you mutter under your breath, your eyes glued to your boyfriend who had you feeling like you were made of butterflies - his eyes lightening up as EJ finally gave in and handed over Linnea to him. You wanted to be annoyed but there was no way you could be, the man with the little girl on his hip, making her giggle, had not only accepted the fact that you didn’t want kids and promised to love you either way, but no one could be annoyed at that sight; Tyson smiling widely at her as she giggled, her tiny hands in front of his face as he blew air into the soft skin of those incredibly small hands.
“I don’t understand,” Cale looks between you and Tyson who’s still working his best moves on the little girl. Cale had taken Mel’s place beside you, when she went to get the food ready for serving with Gabe.
“I have never wanted kids, at least not since I used to play with dolls as a kid. I have never felt that need to reproduce and be a mother. Never. But then I met Tyson, and I just love him so god damn much and now my brain is twisting around itself. My uterus literally reacts when I see him with kids, it’s like my inner, well-hidden motherly instincts get a boner or something,” you try your best to explain your situation to him. To say you left him speechless was an understatement.
Half an hour later, Linnea is asleep on his chest and Tyson comes over to you with a sheepish smile on his lips, sitting down next to you.
“Hey,” he says, following your every move closely as you reach out to run your finger over Linnea’s soft cheek, pressing your own cheek to Tyson’s shoulder.
“How are you dealing with this?” he asks, a hint of laughter in his voice but mostly it’s sweet. He knows it’s a serious problem for you, a constant battle between the one thing you’d known for years - you didn’t want kids - and the part of you that was so stupidly in love with Tyson that you’d do anything to make him happy, that had all your principles twisting. Your heart literally felt like it was about to burst with love just seeing him with someone else’s kid, imagine what it’d be like if the baby was yours and had his curly hair and goofy smile.
“Not well,” you sigh, and his stare softens, leaning towards you and pressing a kiss to your forehead.
“I’m sorry,” he says as he pulls back, knowing very well he’s got nothing to apologize for.
“Not your fault, baby,” you tell him, saying the exact opposite of what you said on the car ride over, as you were whining over the fact that he had plans of conquering the hearts of every kid there.
“Give me at least five years,” you whisper hours later as you lay in bed, your front pressed to Tyson’s back as you spooned him, your lips pressed to his shoulder.
“What?” Tyson asks, his mind not in the same place as yours. He places his phone on the nightstand and turns around to face you.
“Give me at least five years to what I do, to work. I went through way too much education to not be a 100% in for a few more years,” you go on, leaving Tyson just as confused. You look up at him, moving your gaze away from the spot in the ceiling you’d been staring it mindlessly for the last ten or so minutes. Looking up at him you realize he still has no clue what you’re talking about.
“Five years and, if you want, we can have a baby, Tyson,” you tell him, tears welling in your eyes. It was a weird feeling, actually saying it out loud, admitting to yourself that you wanted the one thing you’d been so adamant about not wanting. But there was no denying the feeling it gave you, being with the man lying in just his boxers next to you under the sheets.
“What?” he asks, this time in disbelief. His hand comes up to cup the side of your face.
“I mean, are you sure? I don’t want you to change for me. I am fine with not having kids, baby - as long as I have you,” he adds, making the tears spill down your cheeks. How could he possibly love you as much as he did? At the same time, you knew the feeling, because you loved him like you hadn’t loved anything before - more than you could’ve imagined loving anyone or anything.
“I am sure, baby,” you press your forehead to his, sighing contently.
“Why are you crying, then?” Tyson asks, trying his best to dry the tears away. You couldn’t help but giggle.
“Because I love you so much, Tyson, so much that you make me want things I have never wanted before, okay? I love you so, so much, and seeing how good you are with literally any kid, how you light up when you’re around them, makes me feel things I didn’t know I was capable of feeling.
“Oh, baby, I love you, too,”

!! agree with your last post so much. sure it’s funny that HB kept making a bunch of similar shows after scooby was a hit, but it’s annoying to see all the “clones” get labeled as bad just because “they’re basically scooby doo”. the formula is fun and they do change it up a bit with every show, making it new and entertaining. i think people don’t even want to give the other shows a chance because they feel it’s somehow a disservice to scooby when it really isn’t. i mean, scooby has crossovers with the other shows and the joke in laff-a-lympics is that their team is called the scooby doobies
I definitely agree with all the points you made here, Anon. Thoughts about it all under the cut since I ended up having a lot of them:
Like, I do get why the Mystery Teen shows of the 70s tend to get singled out as proof of why Hanna-Barbera was "uncreative". Not only was Scooby Doo itself heavily prevalent in that time period, but there were eleven other shows following the formula (twelve if you count Ruby-Spears's Fangface). It's like the criticism leveled against the shows in the 1960s following the Tom and Jerry or Yogi Bear formulas or the shows in the 1980s following the Smurfs formula, only amplified because of the sheer amount of examples. Personally, the criticism that "Hanna-Barbera always just recycled its old ideas" was never something that bothered me, as I think its super neat to see how the same starting point can be adapted to different scenarios with different characters, but I do get why it gets brought up so much.
But it's just like you said, it is indeed irritating to see all of the other Mystery Teen shows get automatically dismissed just because they're similar to Scooby. There are distinct differences between each show that frankly you only need to see one episode to notice, maybe two if you're really dedicated to seeing how the characters act (since in some shows some of the characters do act different in the first episode compared to the rest of the series). Sure, one can argue that they are relatively simple changes to make, like the number of characters in the group or the setting, but those are still ultimately very important to the show.
Like, The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan and The Buford Files are both shows about siblings solving more traditional/down-to-Earth mysteries, but there is an inherent difference between a large set of siblings solving mysteries in international locations and a brother and sister pair solving mysteries in rural Georgia. Goober and the Ghost Chasers and The New Shmoo are both about reporters investigating the existence of the supernatural, but there is an inherent difference between reporters who are paid to investigate these scenarios and have a believer viewpoint and reporters who are investigating these scenarios on their own dime and have a skeptical/analytical view on the matter.
Even how the mysteries are set up is different between a lot of the shows. Captain and the Teen Angels is a classic detective show with them witnessing a crime being committed and having to discover who did it. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids has the characters already knowing who the culprit is, so the mystery becomes how or if they'll be able to stop them. Josie and the Pussycats has the characters accidentally stumbling into trouble and having to solve the mystery just to get themselves out of it.
I think the best way to describe the major distinctions between the shows, especially in comparison to Scooby Doo, is how the shows handles their companion characters. There is a difference between how Scooby talks versus how the other talking dog characters talk. In that, Scooby actually talks to the human characters in his show. Goober only talks to the audience, instead barking normally to the Ghost Chasers. Woofer and Whimper only talk to each other, instead also barking normally to the Clue Club. Buford mumbles out loud to himself, which Woody and Cindy Mae will sometimes overhear and briefly acknowledge, but Buford never has a full-blown conversation with them.
There is also a difference between how the Scooby Doo characters treat Scooby as their pet dog versus how the Speed Buggy characters treat Speed Buggy as their car versus how the Jabberjaw characters treat Jabberjaw as their drummer and fellow aquatic citizen versus how the Funky Phantom characters treat Mudsy as a ghost and mentor figure. Obviously, dogs and cars and sharks and ghosts all have different skills and viewpoints on the world that impact how they interact with the people around them.
(This is just a side tangent I want to make real quick, but one thing in particular I think is disingenuous about some of the criticism the other Mystery Teen shows get is the reaction to what companion character each show has. The shows that do have a dog in them [regardless of if it can talk or not] are hit with the "oh look another talking dog what a rip-off" argument and are automatically dismissed, but the shows that don't have a dog in them get the "haha look at the talking ghost/car/shark how ridiculous!" treatment and get mocked. Is it really a fair criticism if "this character is visually similar to Scooby" and "this character is not visually similar to Scooby" are both the wrong choice to make? I don't think so.)
Going back to what you said, Anon, you make a really good point about the formula itself. It is a fun formula! The "a group of teenagers and their companion get into shenanigans and ultimately end up helping people" formula is one that can be adapted various different ways and all have fun results. It's one reason why Scooby Doo itself has lasted so long I'd argue, because it gives room for variations in setting and personalities and the like without straying too far from what makes it entertaining (how the characters work together to solve their problems and the good they ultimately end up doing through it).
I also think that's an interesting suggestion you brought up, that the reason that people don't like the other Mystery Teen shows on principal is because they think it would be disrespecting Scooby Doo somehow. I think that would be a reason for Scooby fans more particularly not liking them (since I imagine that say, those Hanna-Barbera critics I brought up earlier probably don't like them just because they don't like Hanna-Barbera in general), and one I can at least kind of understand.
Obviously I do agree with you Anon that the existence of the other shows are not a disservice to Scooby Doo, both in a "the existence of others shows does not take away the goodness of Scooby Doo" way and in a "if Hanna-Barbera used the Scooby formula eleven more times it clearly means they liked it" way. But, I do understand the emotional, knee-jerk reactions of "why did you make the show again do you think there's something wrong with the first one?" and "the first one was so good there was no need for another version of it". I do think that fans who feel this way should still give the other Mystery Teen shows a chance though, instead of just assuming that they're all inherently worse than Scooby Doo just because they came out after it.
All of the crossovers you mentioned are another reason why I don't think that the other shows should be viewed as a disservice to/disrespectful of Scooby Doo. Scooby Doo as a franchise as always been pro-crossover and celebrating other media, and this was especially true in the 1970s. I could bring up episodes like "The Weird Winds of Winona" and "The Haunted Showboat" for this, but I think your example of Laff-a-Lympics is probably the best showcase of this. I discussed this in another ask a while ago, but the characters on the Scooby Doobies where specifically chosen because of their shared history with the Scooby Doo franchise (with Captain Caveman, the Teen Angels, and Hong Kong Phooey thematically working as replacements for the characters Hanna-Barbera wanted to use but couldn't due to their crime-stopping nature).
In a way, at least the 1970s version of Scooby Doo is intertwined with the other Mystery Teen shows the same way they are with it. They co-existed together back then with no issue, and both ultimately ended up being important in defining the landscape of Hanna-Barbera cartoons in the 1970s, for however you may interpret that.

Kira's Quest To Find A Hockey Team
Tumblr media
So this was my first year watching hockey. My plan going into this was I was going to watch as much hockey games that I could, and from that choose which team/s I liked. But then the whole virus thing happened and kind of derailed things. I know there wasn't that many games left but playoff season in any sport changes the dynamics of teams and you really get to see the teams for who they are. So I thought it would be fun to ask the people of hockey Tumblr to ask you guys to pitch me your teams. Why should I be a Kings fan or a Stars fan? I don't really care about stats or how many games they win. Im more into the character of the team so tell me about traditions or events. The team pets, the team members, favorite moments, anything really.
I'm tagging a few people just so I might get some responses but anyone can add on to this post if they want :)
