Recently a friend and I were lamenting that we didn’t have any occasions to wear houmongi to in Malaysia - so we decided to just get dressed up anyway and meet for lunch 😆 I bought this kimono for an event but it was sadly a bit too obviously stained for formal events, but it’s good enough for this sort of casual meet up!
(I am so glad I managed to dress neatly enough in an hour, despite not having worn kimono myself in months, and also not having practiced nijuudaiko in maybe 7 years 😂)
(….. also, please don’t mind the mattress propped up behind me, we are reshuffling some furniture at home 😂)

What's In a Kimono? Part 10
On The Ninth Day of Fun I present... a new kimono! Another series makes it to the double digit mark at last! Let's take a dive into the kimono that's gracing the cover of my upcoming book ^^
Tumblr media
Name: Kichō No Yume (几帳の夢) - Partition Dream Type: Houmongi (訪問着) Time Period: Heisei Period (1989 - 2019) Condition: Excellent Material: Silk Motifs: Partitions, Clouds, Fans, and Flowers Execution and Techniques: Yuzen and Stencils Value: $200 - 250 USD When I originally went to purchase this piece I thought that it was shibori (tie dye), but I was very surprised when it arrived and found that it's all hand dyed instead! The entire piece, including the background, is either hand painted yuzen or stencil dyed with extremely small, intricate stencils! This gives the whole piece a very dreamy effect that makes you want to stare and pick out the all of the details. It's almost hard to believe that the black background or the blue clouds aren't solid colors. The main motif here are Kichō (几帳), which are partitions used by the nobility during the Heian Period (794 - 1185), and cypress fans, also used by the nobility during the Heian Period. The partitions would be set up in rooms and block the viewer from gazing directly upon the face of the other noble. Just like the partitions, these large cypress fans were used by court women to hide their faces in large rooms and when meeting with potential suitors. The partitions and the fans were both decorated with pieces of silk that accentuated their length and drew the eye of the viewer to their lovely designs. You may have noticed on the right hand side near where the hem meets the collar that there's a random white square among all of the color. This isn't there by accident, but it being blank is! This is the area where the artist would dye their signature. That it somehow got skipped and sold as-is is gives it an air of mystery as it was clearly a work of art made by a famous artist, but who? I haven't found any other markings on this piece, so I guess we'll never know ^^

Kimono are traditionally stored in large rice-paper envelopes called tatoushi. ✉️ Before WWII, it was normal for wealthy women to own more than 300 kimono, one for almost every day of the year. (Kimono Vanishing Tradition: Japanese Textiles of the 20th Century by Cheryl Imperatore and Paul MacLardy).
Fair warning. ⚠️ While the paper is durable than most, it will rip or tear if you’re not careful. Remember to keep your kimono someplace dry AND away from sunlight. I store mine in a drawer.

For a tutorial on how to properly fold and store kimono, watch this video.
You can buy the same tatoushi I use on Etsy.

okay so my old blog got deleted so that’s ✨fantastic✨ so here’s my new blog with some new art. from the top!
Aph Hungary and Aph Chibi Italy in Houmongi/Komon Kimonos!
Hungary’s kimono is a Houmongi kimono with a nagoya obi and a simply tied obijime. I made sure to include a Kanzashi that’s similar to her flower hairpin in canon! just changed the colors to match her coord better :) Italy’s is a elegantly patterned Komon kimono with a Fukuro obi and flower-tied objime. I kept the headscarf he wears in canon because i was originally going to add an apron, but i legit forgot. 😭 these kimono coords are inspired by ones in my collection or ones i’ve been ogling to buy for myself. i wish i could yoink hungary’s kimono for my collection lol.

Asian Clothing: Japanese Kimono
Kimono Type: Tomesode: Houmongi
Accuracy Rating: 5/5
Explanation: Flawless! Stunning! Such a gorgeous example of an elegant ensemble! The pattern is an excellent example of Taisho period aesthetics and the multiple obijime knots in beige is such a subtle, elegant detail! The side view even includes details to the construction of her taiko musubi! Just... chef’s kiss!

The Seventies called; they want their outfit back
Tumblr media
I haven't used this gorgeous showa-fabulous houmongi Sophie got me for my birthday a while back anywhere near frequently enough. I decided to have some fun with it today, and realised this obi (which I nearly sold! what was I thinking?) is the absolute perfect seventies-style match for it. As timeless as the shape of a kimono may be, the patterns and colours are just as susceptible to trends as western clothing is. This particular shade of orange, especially paired with gold, and the big warm-toned and almost pop-art flowers, are very emblematic of the middle of the second half of the Showa era, from the late 60s to the early 80s. I could just as easily see this general colour and pattern scheme on a polyester pantsuit as I could on this particular coordination. I decided to keep things relatively quiet with the accessories, since the kimono and obi are so flashy already. This soft leafy green picks up the green accents in the design so it seemed like the best choice, but the obijime did get a bit lost against the obi. Then I remembered this padded, decorative little cord I picked up at the Daiso last time I was in California. It's a bit too thin and delicate to be a functional obijime by itself but it's absolutely perfect wrapped around as an accent. The black and bold colours just call back to the kimono so well and I'm so happy I remembered I had it! Read the full article

Fulfilled a lifelong dream of being professionally dressed in formal kimono in Japan for an event!
I learned loads of kitsuke tips - definitely worth paying money for them to sew on the haneri and preparing the kasane’eri to see how the professionals do it!
Also very happy with how the coordinate turned out - everything came together really well! Worth the months of finding different pieces to go together - but actually quite a few of the main pieces (obi, obiage, kasane eri) were from my existing collection.
Congratulations on the successful completion of the event!!

I’m falling a bit behind on Pokémon Ship Week so here’s days 1-3 lol! Day 3 is actually a redraw of something I did way back in 2020; Lyra is wearing a Houmongi style of Kimono.

It's finally official, so I can share it with you all! The Guide to Kimono has officially opened for pre-orders on Amazon! The release date is June 28th, 2024, so you have plenty of time to get your orders in. It'll eventually be available on Amazon websites outside of the USA to order closer to the date if you don't want to order from Amazon USA, so keep an eye out! But beyond that, all of the kimono shown in the book are from my personal collection, including the one on the cover. When going over ideas about what kimono to use for the cover I only ever wanted this houmongi to be chosen, and thankfully the people at Schiffer agreed. It has such a dreamy feeling to it and I wanted something that would draw the viewer in with something that would be eye catching but not gaudy. You can check out this kimono in better detail here. Needless to say, I am excited ^^
