Ash in his late 20s. Colored sketch.
XY (Iwane)’s style is a bit tricky, especially for late teens/young adults and trying to have more anatomically correct structures.
But worth it! Clothes are totally invented, this actually was more a sketching practice to get back into the style but my friend threatened me to colour it because she wanted it as laptop background so yeahhhhhh
He already proposed to Serena in this of course

Where was Delia's age mentioned? Because the implication of her having Ash at 19 is pretty wild to me. Then again, my parents had me in their 30s as the second last of 7 brothers so my viewpoint may be a bit skewed.
delia's age is mentioned in takeshi shudo's (one of the former head writers pokemon) novel that was meant to accompany the anime. it was called Pocket Monsters: The Animation. it provides a lot of backstory to some characters
Tumblr media
Satoshi's mother's name is Hanako. Looking at Hanako, who is still under 30, you wouldn't think she was Satoshi's mother. In fact, if Satoshi were to introduce her to someone saying “This is my mother, who'll be turning 30 soon.” they'd probably stare blankly... and shake their head in disbelief. Then they'd smile politely and think he was joking as they replied. “Hanako could only be in her early 20s.” Anyway, Hanako really didn't look any older than her early 20s. While Satoshi would prefer her to become more like an ordinary older woman, if strangers were to see them together they would likely think they were brother and sister. While Satoshi wouldn't notice due to being with her all the time, most people would consider her quite the beauty, in fact, when she was 17 she appeared on the front cover of the new year bumper issue of “Pokémon Pals” alongside a flower Pokémon known as Madatsubomi. It was the biggest thing to happen in Masara Town since Masara Ookido reached 931st on the trainer charts. It was approximately two years later that Satoshi was born, however she has never told him about her appearance in that special edition of “Pokémon Pals” because “I was so immature back then, yaaah~ ” After her mother passed away, Hanako took over the family business, the only restaurant in town with an inn (hotel) on the second floor, Masara House: Hanako, which she ran all on her own. Satoshi's father isn't around anymore. Satoshi's father was a Pokémon Trainer. He left town right after Satoshi was born and never came back. While we're on the topic, Hanako's father... That is to say, Satoshi's grandfather, was also a Pokémon Trainer, he also left home when Hanako was young and never came back. But that's enough about Hanako for now, let's get back to Satoshi's story.
her being a teen mom is an integral part to her story

The one behind Minky Momo's death and curse had a name: Takeshi Shudo. If you're familiar with Pokémon, you'll recognize this name.
Ah, yes. The guy who hated Satoshi/Ash so much that he attempted to kill him off permanently in Mewtwo Strikes Back and end the Pokémon anime for good.
Tumblr media
Also, funfact about myself: Like many children who have watched this movie, I have cried at Satoshi's death scene, and thanks to that, my mom forbade me from rewatching this movie ever again. Heck, I haven't even watched the 3D remake!
Luckily, the Pokémon franchise has grown to become a worldwide phenomenon, and as a result, the ending was altered (albeit hastily) in a way, so that Satoshi comes back to life.
Some say that Shudo was too depressed and hopeless about life, that he wanted an ending where Satoshi grows up and abandons his childhood dreams of becoming a Pokémon Master, because they were impossible to achieve.
Fast forward 25 years later, and you have Satoshi becoming world champion and retiring for good, making PKMN Journeys the final season ever, opening doors to other series with other protagonists, such as Horizons, Paldean Wings, Path to the Peak and Pokémon Concierge.
He may not have accomplished his original goal of becoming Pokémon Master, but he at least had the adventure of a lifetime, and my heart swells with nothing but pride for the kid. It's what he deserves.
Tumblr media
Thanks for the memories, boy; we'll be taking it from here now.

Was reading your Raichu post, which prompted this giant message.
There actually is some evidence that regular animals still exist in the Pokemon world, just not as prominently. There's actually promo material of Pikachu and Ash walking past a lady walking her dog, for example. This suggest that, originally, regular animals and Pokemon were supposed to coexist.
Tumblr media
One possible explanation for why we don't see them is that they're less popular than owning Pokemon, and since wild animals generally avoid humans, trainers wouldn't encounter them, much.
Takashi Shudo, on the other hand, claims all real-world animals went extinct and were replaced by Pokemon (presumably by evolving into them...hopefully) but this seems to contradict all the stories of "Ancient" Pokemon, unless the series is thousands of years in the future, making us the Ancient Ones.
I actually dislike this explanation, because he also claims all the real-world animals that appeared were simply "animation mistakes" which makes zero sense in the case of the Ghastly turning into a mongoose, which was very obviously deliberately done, not a "mistake" like he claims.
Tumblr media
There also was a Pokemon book called "Bulbasaur's Trouble" where Bulbasaur had to find a frog to settle a dispute between two children...the frog was a main part of the plot, and thus can't be written off as a "mistake."
Furthermore, the inclusion of Pokemon like Arceus, who supposedly created the world, would imply that Pokemon have been around since the beginning...unless he either wasn't originally a Pokemon, or recreated the world after it was destroyed.
Takashi Shudo's word should also be taken with a grain of salt since he didn't create the series, he was mainly the chief writer for the anime adaptation, so while he was very influential and created Lugia, his word isn't exactly final, it's just one opinion that many of the other writers for the series may disagree with for all we know. As a matter of fact, as far as I can find, he's the ONLY one who spoke on the matter, so we don't know the other writer's opinion on the matter. Raichu's entries continuing to reference Indian Elephants could be a sign that others working on the games disagree with his interpretation. We still don't have Satoshi Tajiri's word on the matter, either.
Furthermore, while it is more common in Gen 1, you can still see real-world aquatic animals in the Sun and Moon anime such as starfish and various shellfish, all the anime features coral, barnacles are sometimes seen, and in the Black and White manga they ask if someone was scared by a spider...a regular spider.
Tumblr media
If you want to look more into it, Bulbapedia has an entire article listing all the times normal animals appeared in the franchise.
You sent this a year ago, and I’m just now publishing it because I’m only now deciding to finally return to this blog! In the year since you sent this in, though, a fascinating thing happened: Raichu’s dex entry in Legends Arceus seemingly retconned the old Indian elephant into Copperajah. Or, alternatively, an Indian elephant is just as easily knocked out by Raichu as Copperajah is, and Copperajah is simply a more useful barometer for Professor Laventon to use :U I think my stance at this point is that it’s undeniable that, early in the franchise, real animals were 100% intended to exist in the pokemon world, even in modern times. This tracks with early promotional material you showed above, and also the supplementary Gen 1 Pokedex book translated by Dr. Lava just a couple years ago, which not only includes references to real-life animals, but also theorizes that stuff like Vulpix are related to real-life foxes. Most outlandishly, Kabuto is claimed to be a common ancestor of hermit crabs and *turtles*. It’s a fascinating read and I highly recommend it! Link here: https://lavacutcontent.com/1996-creatures-pokedex-translation-1/ As for nowadays, though, I think it’s kept purposefully vague. Stuff like starfish are still shown, as are coral and some small insects, but most things that people will readily identify as a traditional “animal” are very strongly avoided. I suspect there’s not really an internal statement whether real-life animals do or don’t exist -- there’s just general orders not to show them, regardless of if they do or not. And invertebrates are just the best at slipping through the cracks. For myself, though, I agree with you -- if non-pokemon plants and fungi and rocks can exist, why not non-pokemon animals too? Anyways, with SV having recently unveiled its official artwork for its new pokemon, now’s as good as time as any to resume the reviews c:

So I just noticed....
Tumblr media
Every two generational series is very tied to one another, stylistically and content-wise. The Beginning and Gold and Silver are obviously both the Original Series in Japan, set on the Kanto/Johto continent from the Satoshi Tajiri-helmed games, having Ash, Misty and Brock traveling together, Gary as the rival, Giovanni as the Big Bad, and Takeshi Shudo on board even if he was tragically forced out as head writer a third of the way through Gold and Silver, and done with hand-drawn animation. Ruby and Sapphire and Diamond and Pearl both started the digital animation style, and saw the rise of conventions like Coordinator girl companions, regional Evil Team subplots, Brock inexplicably never leaving, the increasing flattening of Ash and Team Rocket's characters, plus Atsuhiro Tomioka becoming the new head writer.  Black and White and XY both had Tomioka “leashed”, had an advancement in animation, tried to be more faithful to the games with the regions depicted, had Team Rocket no longer appearing every episode, and XY was a mistaken course correction from the vocal minority's hate of Black and White and how Ash was depicted in it plus Tomioka's angry desire to do the kind of intricate Myth Arc he missed out on doing in Black and White. And Sun and Moon and Journeys....do I even need to say it? Daiki fucking Tomiyasu, baby!
Personally, as I have said multiple times, I prefer the first series in each set. However, I feel as though Journeys was much less of a downgrade to its predecessor when compared to the previous sets, so I’m glad that Ash’s journey got to have a worthy conclusion in the end.

Takeshi Shudo was the lead writer for the Pokémon anime, and after having not worked on the series for some time, passed away after suffering a subarachnoid haemorrhage in 2010. He was, rather infamously, a drinker and an addict to various narcotics, but he wasn’t always that way. His pain was slow burning, and we can trace it all back to his time on the Pokémon anime, specifically the second film. Thus begins the most well-known sacrifice to the altar of The Pokémon Company; Lugia.
Shudo is credited as one of the co-creators of the Pokémon Lugia, alongside franchise art director Ken Sugimori. Originally envisioned as a “Mother of the Sea” entity and a water-type, Lugia had a very particular role in the narrative of the second film. In its original form it was known as “Pokémon X” via marketing materials, hence the X-pattern on its belly shown in this early concept art. The second film wasn’t even really about Satoshi and friends, it was almost entirely divorced from them until massive rewrites demanded that the plot and status of Lugia be altered and many staff members pointed out that the film lacked all of the main characters from the anime.
As you’ve surely guessed by now, Lugia ended up becoming the mascot of Pokémon Silver, alongside Ho-Oh, but the two were never designed as counterparts. Originally, Ho-Oh was simply the mascot of both games, appearing on the title screens of both Gold and Silver versions during development.
When Shudo learned that Lugia was to be stripped of context and turned into merely another piece of merchandise, it was arguably the beginning of what can only be described as an immense, decade-long depressive spiral. The Pokémon anime had already been wrested from him in terms of creative control, and many plotlines he wanted to make good on simply never came to pass. A lot of his lamentations and misgivings were documented on his blog over the years, describing his writing process during the period which was fueled by alcohol and horse tranquilizers. By the time the second film was finished, Gold and Silver were still unreleased (owing to major delays and basically restarting development entirely halfway through — a tale for another day.).

Q: "Bamboo shoot rice"
A: Since the (MILGRAM GACHA) stream started, we've been receiving strange marshmallows from the Jari Boys and Girls (which is a nightmare in itself), but I can't figure out what they mean and it's been bothering me. I don't know if it's because they're using clever wordplay that I haven't noticed, or if they genuinely don't understand the rules and are just being cute. It's like the unpredictable moves of an amateur are hitting the mark with the experts. Who are these experts?
I translated this marshmallow because it lead me to a deep rabbit hole and you guys have to suffer now too! Let us join Yamanaka-san in his confusion.
When you look at the term [砂利ボーイ], (DT: Gravel Boy) in the internet, you might be confused as to why there's a lot of Pokemon images.
What is the meaning of 'Jari Boy'?
"Jari Boy" is a nickname for Satoshi, the main character of the anime "Pocket Monsters" (known as "Pokemon" in English). The term is mainly used among Pokemon fans. Some fans came up with the nickname "Jari Boy" because they felt that Satoshi had a rough and rugged texture like stones or gravel.
"Jari-gaki" is a slang term used in some regions to refer to misbehaving children.
It's strange that Team Rocket speaks politely to Satoshi and his friends, and in a children's anime that airs during prime time, it's not appropriate to use words like "this brat" or similar derogatory terms. It's been suggested that "Jyari Boy" was chosen as a word that is neither clean nor dirty, but rather neutral.
In my region, we don't have such slang terms, so when I heard "Jari Boy," I wondered if it was a common Japanese word. However, it turns out that there are regions where such terms are used.
When you rearrange the letters in "jari," you get "satoshi" in Japanese characters, which is the name of the main character in the anime. "Jari" can also be read as "sari," which means gravel or sand. It's been suggested that "Jari Boy" is a nickname that was derived from this wordplay.
Although there hasn't been an official announcement to confirm this, it's a plausible theory, in my opinion. Even if it turns out to be wrong, whoever came up with this idea has a great sense of creativity.
Personally, I think both theories could be true. When the creators were trying to come up with a nickname for Satoshi and his friends, they might have thought of the word "jari," which has both meanings of sand/gravel and Satoshi's name, and decided to use it. This is just my speculation, though!
I've been a fan of Pokemon for a long time, but I didn't notice this until I became an adult. I think it's amazing how people can come up with such interesting ideas.
Team Rocket, who uses such nicknames, what kind of existence are they to Satoshi and his friends?
According to the anime's original creator, Takeshi Shudo, every person has a time when they don't want to grow up, like Peter Pan. Therefore, Satoshi in the anime never grows up.
And he also wants to make fun of clumsy and foolish adults.
But in reality, there are no such adults.
That's why Team Rocket continues to play the role of clumsy and foolish adults without ever growing old.
Reference: http://www.style.fm/as/05_column/shudo143.shtml
That's right.
Team Rocket treats Satoshi and his friends as "Jari," but Satoshi wants to make fun of Team Rocket as "foolish adults," creating a "tsun tsun" relationship in a positive way.
When we were in elementary school, I think we all wanted to build equal relationships with older people.
Although the anime has been going on for a long time, the relationship between Satoshi and Team Rocket is not good, but they are not entirely bad or in a clear relationship of justice and evil as rivals. It's perhaps because of this complex relationship that Team Rocket is more fascinating.
To summarize:
There are two possible origins of the nickname "Jari Boy":
From the slang term "Jari-gaki" used to refer to misbehaving children.
A wordplay on "Jari" (gravel) and "Satoshi."
Team Rocket plays the role of clumsy and foolish adults.
Despite being familiar with these terms, we often don't realize the hidden meanings behind them until we think about them more deeply. I love their relationship, and I hope it continues without being cut off even if the series changes or Team Rocket's appearances decrease.
Now as to why Yamanaka-san is being targetted like this...
Tumblr media
During the live stream, the voice actors joked that they would eat gravel to stop the gacha but there is concern that Yamanaka might mistakenly believe that the actors actually enjoy eating gravel.

For the longest time, fans were confused on whether Miyamoto died or lived, because her recorded messages go up until present time or nearly, even after the avalanche in the first chapter, when Musashi is almost an oban/old maid by 90's Japanese standards (so, 25), and then the second-to-final series starring Satoshi/Ash (final if you don't count the mini-series that was Mezase Pokemon Master), Pocket Monsters (2019)/Journeys basically confirm Mew killed someone in those mountains who the others assume must have been a terrible person. It was likely her. ;_; Yeah, Mew's like the Peter Pan novel's description of children, the qualities needed to fly: gay and innocent and heartless.
Thank you for the message! I haven't watched that last arc of the anime, though I intend to for specifically Mew reasons, and learning this is amazing. I would have never ever expected anything about Miyamoto to be even alluded at ever again.
Personally I still wouldn't think of it as strictly "confirming", since so many years have passed and Shudo had been long dead by when that series was written, so one can still think of it as more of a word of Paul/word of Dante situation: the people involved with Journeys think Miyamoto did die, which is fair. But in the context of just the text of The Birth of Mewtwo, it really isn't so clear, and even reading (translations of) Shudo's blog where he wrote a lot about what was on his mind writing The Birth of Mewtwo and other things, so far I haven't been able to find out anything more about what he intended as Miyamoto's fate.
It also further confuses that her role is half comic relief and half absolutely tragic (looks like anything the guy touched turned kind of tragic even when he didn't set out to, lol), so is the part where she talks about Jessie being "already an old maid" just for giggles, or to be taken at face value? If so, how much? Personally I like to believe in all possibilities for this one.
Still I am absolutely amazed that this callback ever happened. I need to look more into it and watch the Mew arc already...
And I love the comparison with Peter Pan. God that's perfect.

This excerpt from Pocket Monsters: The Animation 😭
When the customers left, Hanako cleaned out their cups, locked the shop, went upstairs to her bedroom, changed into her pajamas and noticed the blinking light on the answering machine by her bedside. Hanako pressed the button. Satoshi's voice played. “Mom... I made it through Tokiwa Forest. Next is Nibi City... Mom, I'm sure you're busy, so I'll leave it at that. I'll contact you again later when I've got time... Call any time you're free... And if I'm free, I'll be sure to answer...” Hanako was pleased. She was able to sleep peacefully tonight. “... So, Nibi City,” Hanako whispered. Hanako's husband... That's Satoshi's father, and Hanako's father, that's Satoshi's grandpa, had never made any contact. “All I wanted... was to be contacted...” Hanako whispered.
SOMEONE PLEASE JUST CALL DELIA!!!! Aggggh if you haven’t read Takeshi Shudo’s novel, you should. Here’s a link to the chapter this is from!

A smile to conquer - Ficlet
“And here I thought the weather would be clear by now,” Ryou sighed as he looked at the ashen skies, a bit unusual for their coasty climate.“Man, it’s been a long time since it poured like this huh?” Shudo said. “Luckily, I have,” he scrambled in his backpack, pulling out a yellow sheet and, “a thing for every occasion!”
“You carry that around every day?” Ryou asked with that slight hint of intellectual superiority in his voice, emphasis on the ‘every’, why yes Shudo, is something wrong in your head? Perhaps you need another batch of rotten milk to cleanse that brain of yours? Memories of how the twins endlessly tortured him in the past flooded back, and flowed away as quick as they came. They grew older and less inclined to force rainworm juice in each other’s throats.
And whether it was intentional or not, Shudo knew that it was just his way of talking, mannerisms he has long since gotten used to. A way of talking others had called ‘pretentious’ or ‘harsh’ but he had started loving, because he simply understood its real meaning.
He closed his eyes and let the taste of the rain trace faint imprints on his papilla. He felt Ryou’s judging stare from beneath his cap. Always an interest in the peculiar and macabre, although Shudo related more with the former.
"Here, take this", Shudo said, pushing the yellow fabric into Ryou's hands.
"It's too big you know,” Ryou said as he put the raincoat on without hesitation. “And your hood is torn.”
Ryou was clearly not familiar with the phrase “A beggar can’t choose” but then neither did he see himself as a beggar in this situation. He glanced at the locks he had carefully conditioned that morning and sighed quietly.
“Wanna walk under the umbrella with me?” Shudo suggested as he pulled it out of his tennis bag. He was always prepared.
“No.”
“You know you want to~”
“Don’t even think of it.”
Shudo would never get tired of being rejected so bluntly. Mostwere a bit considerate (out of pity), but Ryou’s venom was fascinating. Although he had to admit that he would lie if he said it never hurt. It was venom for a reason.
Shudo extended his hand and tilted his umbrella, over Ryou’s head. “What about this?”
"I have a cap." Ryou remarked. "You," he pointed, "will be drenched."
The slight tremble in Ryou’s voice warmed Shudo’s heart. Fake concern or not. "Your hair will get frizzy if it gets wet right?"
Silence. He couldn’t read Ryou’s expression (when could he ever).
Ryou loosened a sharp remark "You really are an idiot."
The dim lightning of the school gate’s lantern in the nights illuminated scarce of his face, but yet his expression was branded in Shudo’s mind. Eyes softer, cheeks a bit bulging, hair stuck in thick strands to his temples and ears (which made Shudo want to hug him close and swipe it back behind his ear) and pose a bit unsure, made his heart clench tight and forget all about the insecurities he once held, for it was a momentary image only he was allowed to touch.
And accompanied with that, a smile Shudo wished to conquer once and for all.

IkuZe!! Hageshiku moeru batoru! IkuZe!! Pinchi wa chansu daze! IkōZe!! Kishikaisei! Zettai ni akiramenai... Oretachi wa akiramenai! I have no words to describe how this character means to me, what he gave to me. Happy birthday Ash/Satoshi, the true one. The one that helped me to hang on during the worst times in past. The one that inspired me with art. The one that made me learn to not give up: "Saigomade! Akiramenai!". The one that Shudo created and worked so hard for. The one that never ceased to learn and mature, doing his mistakes and raising from them. The one that DID grew up until the original series ended with xyz. The one that wasn't rebooted for money and used like a puppet, the one whose timeline wasn't messed up constantly. The one who maybe didn't win a league but was already a Pokémon Master inside. Thank you for all you gave me, I will remember you for what you were and for how your creator meant you to be.
(Yes, as using Ash as a money puppet I meant BW, SM and the new series. I am not criticising the series themselves but more the way Ash is used and the reasons. Shudo would NEVER do something like that if he was alive, he never wanted this for Ash... Any comments of hate about this will be deleted and I will mute/block. This topic is something I really care about and I’d rather not discuss about defending or not the writers with their unfair and bad treatment of Ash, Shudo’s and his followers’ work on the series)
