I hope you like HF!AU, cause there’s a lot of it. We’re just getting started, really. But for now, having some cute family portraits with matching outfits, because that’s cute and corny and that’s... my taste in a nutshell.
Also for Ferdinand and his family, they’re all wearing the same thing, yes, but they’re just sharing the one scarf, because... they can. Also brb, printing these, framing them, hanging them in my house, and crying now.

Summary, Week 4
Lecture 4: Art Nouveau and more
Gilded Age The Industrial Revolution allowed (made inevitable?) the Victorian era’s creation of opulent looking objects in many materials, and many price ranges. The wealth created by manufacturing (and transportation, and industry of all sorts) made a new class of super-rich, not through inheritance but through capitalism and consumption. Many designers and craftsmen appealed to this wealthy market by creating ostentatious luxury goods. The second half of the 19th century also saw tremendous advances in old technologies, the introduction of new technologies, and a gradual shift away from steam power to turbines and electricity. This early era of electricity is often called the Second Industrial Revolution.

Art Nouveau: – First global style, only “self-concious” style (it was called Art Nouveau while it was happening). – First time designers began thinking in terms of stylizing.  – Designs came from significant and meaningful sources, but were inherently fashionable.  – The influence of Japanese art changed the way Western artists considered their work (and also an increasing awareness of “other” cultures). – The world began to consider trends and use that information in the design and marketing processes. – Consumption as we now know it is a product of the Art Nouveau sensibility. – Technology, and available materials challenge designers to begin figuring out how to give form to new devices.

Carl Jacob Christoph Burckhardt (25 May 1818 – 8 August 1897) was a Swiss historian of art and culture and an influential figure in the historiography of both fields. He is known as one of the major progenitors of cultural history.[1] Sigfried Giedion described Burckhardt's achievement in the following terms: "The great discoverer of the age of the Renaissance, he first showed how a period should be treated in its entirety, with regard not only for its painting, sculpture and architecture, but for the social institutions of its daily life as well."[2]
His best known work is The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy (1860). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob_Burckhardt
Work[edit]
Burckhardt's historical writings did much to establish the importance of art in the study of history; indeed, he was one of the "founding fathers of art history" but also one of the original creators of cultural history. Contra John Lukacs, who has argued that Burckhardt represents one of the first historians to rise above the narrow 19th-century notion that "history is past politics and politics current history,"[5] Lionel Gossman claims that in stressing the importance of art, literature, and architecture as a primary source for the study of history, Burckhardt (in common with later Dutch cultural historian Johan Huizinga) saw himself as working in the tradition of the French romantic historian Jules Michelet.[6] Burckhardt's unsystematic approach to history was strongly opposed to the interpretations of Hegelianism, which was popular at the time;[citation needed] economism as an interpretation of history;[citation needed] and positivism, which had come to dominate scientific discourses (including the discourse of the social sciences).[citation needed]
In 1838, Burckhardt made his first journey to Italy and published his first important article, "Bemerkungen über schweizerische Kathedralen" ("Remarks about Swiss Cathedrals"). Burckhardt delivered a series of lectures at the University of Basel, which were published in 1943 by Pantheon Books Inc., under the title Force and Freedom: An Interpretation of History by Jacob Burckhardt. In 1847, he brought out new editions of Kugler's two great works, Geschichte der Malerei and Kunstgeschichte, and in 1853, he published his own work, Die Zeit Constantins des Grossen ("The Age of Constantine the Great"). He spent the greater part of the years 1853 and 1854 in Italy, collecting material for his 1855 Der Cicerone: Eine Anleitung zum Genuss der Kunstwerke Italiens (7th German edition, 1899) ("The Cicerone: or, Art-guide to painting in Italy. For the use of travellers" Translated into English by A. H. Clough in 1873), also dedicated to Kugler. The work, "the finest travel guide that has ever been written"[7] which covered sculpture and architecture, and painting, became an indispensable guide to the art traveller in Italy.
About half of the original edition was devoted to the art of the Renaissance. This was followed by the two books for which Burckhardt is best known today, his 1860 Die Cultur der Renaissance in Italien ("The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy") (English translation, by S. G. C. Middlemore, in 2 vols., London, 1878), and his 1867 Geschichte der Renaissance in Italien ("The History of the Renaissance in Italy"). The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy was the most influential interpretation of the Italian Renaissance in the 19th century and is still widely read.
The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy (German: Die Cultur der Renaissance in Italien) is an 1860 work on the Italian Renaissance by Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt. Together with his History of the Renaissance in Italy (Die Geschichte der Renaissance in Italien; 1867) it is counted among the classics of Renaissance historiography. An English translation was produced by S.G.C. Middlemore in two volumes, London 1878.
According to Denis Hay:
Burkhardt sought to capture and define the spirit of the age in all its main manifestations. For him ‘’Kultur’’ was the whole picture: politics, manners, religion...the character that animated the particular activities of a people in a given epoch, and of which pictures, buildings, social and political habits, literature, are the concrete expressions.[1]
Its scholarly judgements are considered to have been largely justified by subsequent research according to historians including Desmond Seward and art historians such as Kenneth Clark. The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy is divided into six parts:
Part One: The State as a Work of Art
Part Two: The Development of the Individual
Part Three: The Revival of Antiquity
Part Four: The Discovery of the World and of Man
Part Five: Society and Festivals 6. Part Six: Morality and Religion

Johannes Brahms (German: [joˈhanəs ˈbʁaːms]; 7 May 1833 – 3 April 1897) was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the Romantic period. Born in Hamburg into a Lutheran family, he spent much of his professional life in Vienna. He is sometimes grouped with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven as one of the "Three Bs" of music, a comment originally made by the nineteenth-century conductor Hans von Bülow.
Brahms composed for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, piano, organ, and voice and chorus. A virtuoso pianist, he premiered many of his own works. He worked with leading performers of his time, including the pianist Clara Schumann and the violinist Joseph Joachim (the three were close friends). Many of his works have become staples of the modern concert repertoire.
Brahms has been considered both a traditionalist and an innovator, by his contemporaries and by later writers. His music is rooted in the structures and compositional techniques of the Classical masters. While some contemporaries found his music to be overly academic, his contribution and craftsmanship were admired by subsequent figures as diverse as Arnold Schoenberg and Edward Elgar. The diligent, highly constructed nature of Brahms's works was a starting point and an inspiration for a generation of composers. Embedded within those structures are deeply romantic motifs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Brahms A German Requiem, to Words of the Holy Scriptures, Op. 45 (German: Ein deutsches Requiem, nach Worten der heiligen Schrift) by Johannes Brahms, is a large-scale work for chorus, orchestra, a soprano and a baritone soloist, composed between 1865 and 1868. It comprises seven movements, which together last 65 to 80 minutes, making this work Brahms's longest composition. A German Requiem is sacred but non-liturgical, and unlike a long tradition of the Latin Requiem, A German Requiem, as its title states, is a Requiem in the German language. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_German_Requiem_(Brahms)

Prom Dates on Parade
Our eyes and ears on the street have been reporting in, folks, and here’s the latest scoop on whose going to the prom with who. Just going to head down the list of students alphabetically.
Aiden Dunwall and Amity Rath - Oh man this one is a scandal and a half, have you seen her dad glaring at him in class? The boy is an ornery little shit alright. But they’re always smiling in each other’s company and he seems to actually respect her as opposed to what, 90% of our classmates? So maybe these two are more than just dates.
Aiko Koizumi and Bhalfyr Khyrrados - No I am not shitting you right now. We here at the Grapevine have it on good authority she asked him this week and he’s rolling with it. Why sugary sweet Aiko wants anything to do with our resident edgelord has yet to be seen, but one thing is sure; nobody saw this coming.
Athena Clark and Wiley Whisper - Hot new couple on campus coming through, rumor has it they started officially dating this week. They make a cute couple but without much of a scandal to pick at with the two of them there isn’t much left to say about that.
Belfamroas Daniels and Sharlaren Daniels - Okay I’m just gonna come out and say it, why do they have the same last name? Are they like, married already? Some weird brothers thing? Same foster family? They’ve surfaced in a few classes, on a few missions, but like, what is up with these guys?
Byron Masters and Zihna Farling - I mean, they’re both running for prom royalty and on that weird line of are they a couple or aren’t they. The official word on that is no and yet everybody keeps saying yes, but we’ll have to see about that.
Chadwick Airikkala and Iliana Vasiliev - Another dark horse couple with a lot of scandal surrounding them. First of all, she’s a three star and doesn’t do a whole lot around the school anymore but since Chadwick is still a student and a fixture around here we’ll put them in this category. The big question is, will his ex-fiance try anything?
Corina Lupei and Quote Calhoun - The Owl and the Wolf. The gaping age difference between them makes it pretty clear these two are going as friends, but who knows, stranger things have happened.
Creed Hemlocke and Rhys Miles - I mean, they’ve been a couple for years now, this isn’t a big surprise.
Jun Matsuoko and Linda Kennedy - Another hot new couple on campus. Kind of weird because rumor has it Ashlynn wanted to climb him like a tree at one point and Idol hearthtrob Jun went for the younger model. Ouch.
Lenz Petersen and Nelly Cruz - Garçon de jardin Lenz asked Nelly to the prom shortly after she got out of containment and every time they’ve been seen together it’s been nothing but smiles. Seems like these two really needed to find one another. Cheers guys.
Lily Killian and Sinead Tiernan - Lily’s a grad but Sinead’s education is still in full swing and even still it’s nice to see two tough as nails girls coming together for some cute.
Murdock Snow and Vale Keighley - Are they besties? Are they just screwing around? Are they involved in some weird illicit thing with Damian Wolf? Only time will tell.
Pele Kapuni’ai and Max Vellachi - What else is there to say? They’re our “Most Likely To Get Married” for this year and who can be surprised about that? This is harmony at its finest.
Princess Bryant and Rococo LeFevre - Everything about this match up screams “Power Couple”. Like wow. Whatever battlefield they choose, with swords or in the board room, the world had better look out. This time, it’s the dance floor.
Shiyu Koh and Sigfried MacLir - Is anyone surprised? Nope.
Singles - Here are the people that, as far as we know, have yet to find dates and we’re not sure if they’re looking but if you are and want the list here it is.
Damian Wolf
Darwin Riley
Deco LeFevre
Dee Williams
Delvin Restrali
Domingo Flores
Grimsley Lixandriou
Ian Dalton
Jahaira Bwakali
Jazzy Vargas-Teldi
Mason Riley
Melody Han
Renee Doe
Rin Mitsuhige
Rose Bryant
Ruby Killian
Tea Larsen
Tishawna Jones
Yvette Lanson
??? - The following people might be going to the prom or not? Like, okay, what is up with the upper classmen? Some of them are moved out and onto other things but still hang around the school and others are still attending classes but like, second degree deathscythe and higher, but we don’t know if they’re going to be at the prom or not.
--Artemis Knight
--Ashlynn Kennedy and Martin Logan - They’re a long time couple and I’ve heard rumors they’re going to attend but both are post deathscythe and past what you’d call traditional student status so we’ll see.
--Carver Hackers and Katarina Knight - Well known couple, both graduates, might still make an appearance? Hard to say.
--Eddy Ducari and Tawni Kaleja - Is he a student? Is this a thing they’re going to do this year? Inquiring minds want to know.
--Timber Jones and Esperanza Acosta - Both are still around but living in town right now and both are post deathscythe so this makes for another weird one.
--Fallon Driscoll and Sagan Elsegood - Post deathscythe, living in town, but Sagan is still taking classes and he’s been spotted defacing some of the prom posters in this guerilla artist kind of way--it’s art because he’s not got a specific target. So they may well show up.
--Isaac Mason - Okay so he’s not a grad but it’s up in the air if he’ll show up or not because of the situation with his girlfriend which we are going to take 100% seriously. Really, this is off limits for mocking or speculation give the boy nothing but support if he does show up or somebody will punch your face.
--Kay Alkaev - Actual polar bear. Kind of hoping she does show up because that would be pretty awesome.
--Lien Xun and Jian Shi - Okay so Lien is a student no question but the real mystery here is whether or not her mystery man will make an appearance for her. Has anybody ever actually seen this guy? Like outside of old tournament videos?
--Magatha Terrence
--Navika Hiranandani and Owen Danvers - They’re in India. I mean. They might show up, they might not? My money is on no, personally, but it would be pretty cool if they did, certainly turn a lot of heads.
--Ram Wolfe
--Ren Fairchild
--Xerxes Padan

So after I finished up Act II last night, I decided to sit down and work a bit on assets for the film's credits. I had sketches put in place for the time being, but I sat down and actually added colour to them last night. Here's a collection of images from the credits.

Finally finished this fun, happy little image of my two boys. I was feeling really bad I didn't draw Sigfried smiling a bit more as an adult, cause I unfortunately have made him a sad, grumpy angry adult, so I've been trying to find more reasons to not... draw him like that. Soooo after drawing him in an adult version of his kid outfit for the suit meme, wanted to revisit it a bit more and drawing the two of them, as kids and adults, in the same outfits, just sounded like fun. Aww aren't they so precious. It's a shame I'm a mean bean and tragic writing is so much more fun. Links to the Patreon, among other things, can be found here!

June is Angry Boy Month, for reasons, so I needed a new avatar on Discord to reflect that. So have an angry Sigfried (which is kinda unfortunately the default state I ever draw him in anymore). Got a separate comic project I will be working on this month with him and Ferdinand, so hope you look forward to it! I do post occasional updates on Discord and will be posting them on the Patreon, as well, so please consider supporting through there!

Because of a recent comic project I’ve been working on that focuses on Ferdinand and Sigfried, I’ve realized just how mean I am to Sigfried. He kinda gets the short end of the stick in the Main Universe for Chameleon Charm and I also noticed I didn’t draw him smiling too much. So I tried to change that. And that means making up an AU daughter for him, because it’s cute and he deserves better than the crap I tend to put him through.

Sometimes I still draw random silly things for this, and after so long of not doing it on the regular, there are ideas leaking from behind the floodgates. This edition is that Sigfried has a morning workout routine and Aylen has no sense of the law or privacy. Ferdinand isn’t bothered either way, because of course he’s not. What they were going to go do? I haven’t the foggiest.

He doesn’t have a chance to really exhibit it really in the Main Universe, but Sigfried is an easily flustered, nervous guy. He’s just generally has to pretend that he’s not, though.
It doesn’t help either that Ferdinand is easily amused by his flustered nature, but he’s not trying to be mean, honest. He’s happy for his friend, but just finds it insanely funny how little it takes him to turn redder than Rudolph’s nose. These two aren’t just my OTP; they’re also Ferdinand’s.

Because my fans on the Discord, where we have been discussing AUs and other ideas, they didn't like me interjecting that little bit of angst into the Happy Family AU, so collectively agreed, no no, it's not that bad; it's a dream but one caused by Sigfried accidentally knocking himself out. And at the library coincidentally. So we get a lap nap and appropriate reading material to help with a fainting library patron.
