I just keep thinking about JGY meeting NHS's mom, and that let to me thinking does JGY know about their inhuman nature? How would that change his long term planning. (I can just imagine him coming to play clarity one day, and meeting fox mom, and having him nope out of his current course of action.)

I was in no way prepared for the amount that this pairing Came For Me. I mean, I really should have been, considering on how many different elements and tropey things i love are embodied in both characters & their relationship in just the tiny bit we get to see--and then there’s so much offscreen to think about--but yeah, this pairing just Gets Me in the best way.

without like. writing a whole ship manifesto, I love it both as a ship and because it functions as Wanting Nice Things for both characters? like I want sms to have someone who recognizes his strengths and appreciates him, and I want jgy to have someone who’s wholeheartedly on his side and cares for him with the same devoted intensity that he tends to care for other people. suyao fulfills both those things!

2. lan xichen/jin guangyao/su she

to poorly quote a post i half remember and can’t recall where i saw it (source originally @madtomedgar) it’s time for lan xichen to get pulled into an ill-advised throuple with someone he hates as karma for the 3zun thing

in all seriousness, i love the potential of this trio. xiyao and suyao are both Good Ships already and the sms-lxc dynamic is potentially fascinating--not quite enough to get them a solo spot on the list, but still great. there’s the fact that in cql especially, sms is one of the only people lxc just... does not like, which i find delightful because half of my desires re: fic are ‘make lxc confront having negative emotions’; especially since it has that element ‘if I don’t like him, but jgy does, what does that mean’ etc. sms, on the other hand, has a whole tangled mess of emotions in regard to lxc. there’s the ‘head of the sect that i got kicked out of/left’ thing, the ‘official boyfriend of the person I care for more than anything’ thing, ‘foremost example of perfect cultivator manhood that i’m continually being reminded i fail at’ thing (the ‘guy i was desperately in love with as a teenager and eventually realized he barely knew i existed’ thing...)

literally i’ve tried to write this a dozen times and each time it gets too long lol i just have a lot of excited feelings about this ship

3. xue yang/su she

this is more of a vitriolic broship, but I have to count it just due to how much it delights me. interactions between these two keep sneaking into unrelated fics I write because they’re just so fun to play off each other; xy fucking with sms until sms finally gets enough nerve to fuck with him right back (which gives xy a solid minute of going ‘i have experienced a. workplace harassment??? i just feel so attacked right now??’ before he settles down) and the two of them absolutely embodying the dynamic where two characters are definitely smarter on their own but somehow reduce to having 1 brain cell when you put them together

(spinoff movie that’s just xy and sms in a ‘what the fuck did we do last night’ style comedy when)

4&5: I have no more like. Actual Ships with him, tbh. I know people ship him & lan wangji but like. even if I think sms had a crush on him at one point (like. i’m pretty sure you were assigned a crush on him by default if you were a teen in the gusu lan at the same time as him) unlike lxc which has a lot more nuance to it, lwj and sms just. seem to straight up hate each other, and not in a particularly sexy way. probably the closest I’ve come to the ship is thinking idly about how murdering jin zixun could conceivably be played as proxymurder of lwj, especially with the donghua’s slightly more delightfully unhinged sms; so honorable mention I suppose, and maybe I’ll come around to it more in the future?

TFW you see a cool textile project you want to do but then you realize it is a textile art you don't know how to do. I crochet....but I think I will put learning to knit as my new years resolution.

If you already know how to crochet you can definitely teach yourself to knit using YouTube tutorials. I wouldn’t recommend the Beekeeper’s Quilt as a first project, but it’s pretty easy once you know knitting basics. Good luck!

Your Solarpunk posts have been really inspiring to me: I am halfway through making a plarn basket, I am researching the best type of composting for my life situation. And I really like what you said about Cloth wrapping for presents, and I have a lot of fabric that I have been looking for uses for. Do you have recommendations for how to size the fabric, etc?

Oh, thank you so much! That’s great to know. And I wish you the best with your composting. It’s funny, I was turning my heap in the garden this morning and it was full of snazzy, stripy worms - apparently called tiger worms. You can buy tiger worms from wormeries for their composting talents, but mine just turned up by themselves. That gives me a weird glow of achievement. I love the fact that when you start working with nature, it works with you.

Re cloth wrappings, I find 18″ by 18″ is the most versatile, but I also found a couple of packs of men’s handkerchiefs in the charity shop, which are 12″ by 12″ and very useful for small things. I also have two or three women’s scarves (the sort that you fold into a triangle and put across your shoulders,) for the really big boxes. I’m not sure exactly what size they are, just really big :) When the wraps are in storage, I wrap them up in a parcel using one of the really big ones.

Ah, that’s good to know! The strange part, perhaps, is that I feel “safer” visiting another not-trans-friendly country than parts of my own country that are not safe. I think in part because I’ll be prepared for the worst in another country, and I may not trust our embassy to bring me back, but in the USA, I feel like its too easy to feel safe and slip up.

It’s in the introduction to a book called Archive Stories: Facts, Fictions, and the Writing of History, so it’s talking about the power of archives and the information they contain.  In this particular bit the author is bringing up the authority they hold even in popular fictional narratives; the script excerpt is of course the scene where Obi-Wan’s like “yo, where’s this planet, you think maybe the archives are incomplete?” and Jocasta goes, “GET OUT OF HERE WITH THAT NONSENSE, if it’s not here, it doesn’t exist.”  So it’s functioning here as a (fictional) example of both an archive’s authority and the possibility of its lack of authority due to the information it holds or doesn’t hold.

So next time they reblogged one of your stories I had to read it too. Now I am making my way through your blog reading everything. How I feel about this character: son boy, light of my life, absolute asshole <3

yeah, going off the kind of characters I tend to like (the only thing I like more than a bitter jerk with an inferiority+superiority complex is a bitter jerk with an inferiority+superiority complex that cares about just one something or someone, preferably with slightly insane levels of devotion) I should have seen this guy coming, but as it was I just went slightly crazy over him during the climactic eps and then just. started going back to him more and more until i had pretty much every moment he’s onscreen memorized, and then I read the book and loved him there as well, and eventually had to sit back and go ‘congrats, self. you’ve shifted your brain into desperate special interest mode over a character that a majority of the fandom dislikes and there’s only a tiny amount of content for. again.’ (again. this has happened a nonzero number of times. i have problems)

All the people I ship romantically with this character: I basically went over this in my top ‘5′ ships answer a little while back, but I’ll touch on it again--jgy/sms is the main ship for me; even if I write something wrt one of them having a dynamic with someone else, it’s always canon to some extent in the background, you know? That said, I mentioned last time that I didn’t think I shipped su she and lan xichen enough on their own to really give them their own slot, and well... it’s still very centered around jgy, in some ways, but I’m literally attempting a 50k fic that’s primarily sms/lxc now so. suffice to say I’ve gotten more interested in it lol

My non-romantic OTP for this character: firmly believe that he and xue yang were each other’s closest (horrible, barely functional) friends barring jgy, though it would horrify both of them to have it pointed out (at least if the other one was present, you have to keep up appearances, god). this is predicated on (a) xy refers to him as his friend during yi city, in what i believe is xy’s grand tradition of only admitting that people are his friends when they’re not present (b) i think it’s both funny and would make things more sad overall, win-win

My unpopular opinion about this character: it’s obviously a somewhat unpopular opinion just to think he’s an interesting character and not The Worst (insert ‘you guys are just mean’ meme), but that feels like a gimme. HOWEVER all the unpopular opinions i can think of at the moment are Too Spicy and i fear to voice them, especially at this time of night... so let’s leave that be for now

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: cql i knooooooow you couldn’t do nmj’s corpse wrecking everyone’s shit but could you NOT have found some other way to include his cool pre-death half second from the book... i mean i know you couldn’t because you couldn’t afford to make swords glow in general but still... ALSO cql you had a scene with jgy chatting to people at the party in present day before everything goes wrong with qin su please just give me a moment of them both looking happy for once talking together... in general terms I know nobody gets much during the timeskip but I would have loved to see something of the journey from him being too nervous to speak when the Twin Jades were around to either loudly vaguing at them (novel) or literally being a delightful bitch to their faces (cql) like look at that GROWTH please give me a scene of him practicing greeting lxc in passing at meetings without panicking and eventually working up to ‘lan-zongzhu (mild derogatory)’
