The Sims 5: SimGuruGrant Talks About Project Rene
During today’s Behind The Sims stream, SimGuruGrant (yes THE Grant) gave players some new info bits on the progress of the next iteration of The Sims, Project Rene. You can check out the video interview by clicking this link here, or read the transcript below.
So, tell us, what’s going on with Project Rene right now?
We are absolutely thrilled to finally put this experience in the hands of some of our players. Well, a small part of the experience. What we’re doing is early days playtesting, and this is just the start of an incredibly long journey. There’s a lot to do, and I’m talking years out, but it is exciting. We’re moving and things are finally starting to happen.
Oooh! Playtesting…So, for those who are new to the gaming sphere, what is playtesting, and what did you explore with this first playtest for Project Rene?
It’s a good question. So, with Project Rene we want to develop this hand-in-hand with our players from the very beginning. So, we’re trying to take small snippets of the game, share it with a limited number of people, and find out what works, what’s fun, what’s too complicated, what needs to be revised.
So, what we did this time was something we call Apartment Customization, where we took what a lot of you know as build or buy mode, so you can place furniture, move it around. But you can also go deeper on individual pieces of furniture. So, this couch you have here, you could change the colors, you could change the pattern, the material, the parts, the size…We let players do that. You could also do this in multiplayer with other people in real time. And then all of your creations can be shared, uploaded, downloaded, so that we can start testing our UGC backend. All of this on both mobile and PC. It’s a lot, and it’s been a really fun test to get started on.
I want to ask a little bit more about the playtest, but I do want to come back to a lot of points that you called out. So, starting with PC and mobile, you guys showed that cross-platform compatibility, and with The Sims™ being such a large game, there’s some concern that it might be a little bit of a shallower experience. So, how are you navigating, taking that from a PC system to now a mobile device?
This is a huge challenge. But the thing that excites us so much is that we can basically remove the barriers to play for The Sims™. So, what we mean by this is that you can have that deep dive at home on your PC, play for 4 hours, change every single thing about a piece of furniture that you imagine, typing in RGB values and changing every single part. So, that’s the PC experience. That’s that true, rich experience that you’re used to. But then, on the go, you can grab your phone and maybe it’s a different experience, maybe you’re grabbing archetypes, preselecting templates or grabbing the stuff that you’ve already created. But what this means is that you can now play The Sims™ wherever you are, without barriers, without restrictions. And we think that’s really powerful and really exciting.
That is exciting. So, let’s say I’m inspired by you right now and I take out my phone, create you now, think you look really cool, and then take that creation of you and actually play with this creation of you on my PC?
100%. The idea is that all of your information is wherever you need it to be. So, as an example, I have a toddler at home, so sometimes I get to game when he’s taking his nap. So, in this case, I could be playing Project Rene on my PC at home. Boom. I hear him crying, he’s up. We’re going to go out and about, go to the park. So then, I might continue what I’m doing on the park bench while he’s safely sliding and I can just pull out my phone, continue where I left off. The idea is that we can customize each platform to match the play style, the person, and what they’re doing and when. And again, that’s really exciting. It’s very difficult, it’s not easy. Something we have to figure out, but it’s really, really exciting for us. And so, it’s one of the challenges we’re trying to take on.
I agree. That is super exciting. I’m telling you, I would play The Sims™ all day, and with Project Rene, it sounds like you’re giving me that capability. So, I’m thrilled But I also want to ask a little bit about the multiplayer experience. The Sims™ historically has been pretty much a single player game outside of The Sims™ Bustin’ Out and The Sims™ Online. And there’s been a long-standing discussion on whether the next iteration or the evolution of The Sims™ should be multiplayer or single player. So, I’m very curious to learn where is Project Rene landing in there?
Project Rene can be both. So, this is a big deal. But the reality is that, yes, we know that our players want to have that intimate personal experience where they’re exploring stories and ideas in single player, but there are also really cool things you could do with others, where you could share, create with your friends, the people that you want. We think we could be both. Now, one thing to keep in mind is that Project Rene is not an MMO. It is not this public, shared space where everything you do is always with other people. You could play on your own, on your terms, and then again, when you want on your terms, you can invite others to come and play with you. That’s the structure that we’re pursuing, and we think that’s really cool and perfect for The Sims™.
I love that for me, because I’m a pretty social person, and I would be very, very excited to play with friends. But there’s also times where it’s like, I’m going to disappear into my own story and kind of do my own thing. So, I think that’s super exciting to know that you’re looking for Project Rene to do both. So, my last question, what stage are we at with Project Rene? You know, more playtests, the releasing next month? I’m kidding. Not releasing next month. But where are we at in this journey for Project Rene, and what can players expect to see in the months and years ahead?
Yeah. Right now, we are really focused on analyzing our recent playtest so that we can use that information to make the game better. We have a long path ahead of us to make Project Rene awesome. But right now we need to introduce our tools to our players in a better fashion. We need to make the mobile experience more accessible, and we need to continue to experiment with how we can curate and recommend UGC content that other players have made to other players, so that you find the best stuff that will make your game better. So, there’s a lot there that we need to figure out to put into our current build. So, again, it’s really early days.
We are trying to analyze our last test and really see what we learned and what we could do about it to make the game better. So, you can expect regular updates from Project Rene in Summits. We’re going to keep talking to you, keep sharing. We also have more tests coming out where we’re going to evaluate different parts of the game, new snippets, more details on that soon, and more details on how to be part of these tests. So, it’s years out, early days. It’s a long-time process that we want to work with you on, but we’re going to keep talking about it, and I can’t wait to share more.

The game, which is currently in its very early stages of development, has a working title “Project Rene.” This name was chosen to be reminiscent of words like renaissance and rebirth to represent the team’s renewed commitment for The Sims’ bright future. Project Rene will fundamentally evolve how Sims think and behave, how players create and customize their worlds, and innovate in entirely new ways.
To start, we are experimenting with creative tools, a key part of The Sims’ DNA, and taking a look at what has worked before and how we can offer more flexibility to help with building and decorating in-game.

The Sims has always evolved to reflect our players and their experiences, and we are building on that foundation to encourage creativity and the ability to tell meaningful stories. This is just a first glimpse of what the team is working on, and we will continue to share more information on the game’s development and milestones along the way.
What is the new game that the team is working on?
The team has begun to work on the next generation of The Sims, currently known as Project Rene. Fans can expect big innovations in how they can customize and create their worlds, how Sims will behave and think, and how players can share the favorite ways they play with their friends across their favorite devices.
Why the name Project Rene?
We chose Project Rene because it is reminiscent of words like renaissance, and rebirth, and represents our renewed commitment to The Sims. That’s what we’re doing, ushering in a new future for The Sims with a new game experience and more. Advertisement
What will Project Rene include at launch that will meet player expectations?
We can’t talk too much just yet about what you can expect during launch, but are keeping player feedback top of mind throughout the early stages of Project Rene’s development. We’re striving to go above and beyond in terms of transparency and creating opportunities for players to share their thoughts about what we’re creating over the next few years.
Will Project Rene be a single player experience, or will there be a multiplayer option?
Players will have the choice to play a single player experience or collaborate with others through online multiplayer across supported devices through cross-platform play.
When will Project Rene be released?
The game is currently in its very early stages of development, and we’ll have more to share over the coming years.
How often will we hear more about Project Rene?
The best way to make sure you keep up with any and all news about Project Rene alongside news about The Sims 4 and our mobile games is to sign up via TheSims.com and to follow our social channels for updates from The Sims team. Advertisement
Does this mean that there will be no more content for The Sims 4?
The Sims 4 is not going away anytime soon. The team has been dedicated to expanding on the game for the past 8 years, and are as committed as ever to developing new and meaningful experiences for players and will continue to develop and release The Sims 4 packs, Kits and Sims Delivery Express drops in the foreseeable future.

I want this emotion on the Sims 4 where fear as a brand new mood. Not just more tension or uncomfortable, just fear!
The Discussion About Fear
The Fear Poll
Please Let SimGuruFrost, SimGuruNinja, SimGuruGrant and EA Games know about petition.
It's divided into four stages:
Scared - In this first stage your sims act as if they were worried about something. from here, they can share their insecurities or ask to sims if they heard a certain noise.
They also unlock some special interactions to calm themselves, though I'm gonna talk about those later.
Very Scared - In this second stage, sims tend to be more paranoid than before.
Their Walkstyle will change, and they be able to run.
Frightened - In this third stage, Sims will be so crazy they'll even start to run panicked!
Terrified - In this final stage, They will begin to freak out! Run Faster in a Terrified Motion. They become even crazier than ever before. They will bite their nails constantly.
If you don't succeed to calm your sim down, consider it dead.
This death method is a comeback from TS2, where you could die from fright if they were scared too much.
They will be able to "freak out!" and "debunk their fears" (Self-Interactions).
These interactions are user directed and will kinda calm them down.
Be warned though! If a sim remains Terrified for too long there will be serious consequences...
There are various ways to calm your sims down. They can:
Calm down using a mirror or a vanity mirror. Cry in the closet. Freak out! (Only terrified sims) Debunk their fears. (Only Terrified sims) Share their insecurities. (Sometimes it doesn't) If you don't succeed to calm your sim down, consider it dead.
This death method is a comeback from TS2, where you could die from fright if they were scared too much.
This death will have a unique ghost type called "Death by fright"
The Sim as a ghost is able to unleash a Banshee Scream to scare a sim and it's not pretty, they can also Wail though out the night scaring you sim out of bed.
There are numerous way your sim can be scared! Some include
the use of expansions and others not:
BASE GAME
If a ghost possesses an object and alive sims are near. If a sim cheats on their spouse and they get caught. When there's a fire on the lot, or a sim is on fire. If a sim uses a voodoo doll for evil purposes and then gets backfired. When a child gets scared of the monster under the bed. When sims witness a dead body. * When a ghost, died by drowning, gets near a pool or swims in it. Using a cheating buff that can either lead to the "Troubled" or the "Terrified" emotion. **
GET TO WORK
If an alien gets caught wearing a disguise. If a sim discovers an alien and the outcome is negative. If a sim gets abducted and they don't come back dizzy. When a sim gets panicked because of a SimRay. When an alien scares a sim with a probe and the outcome is negative.
CITY LIVING
When there's an earthquake. When a house has the haunted trait (And receive the occasional buff that would normally appear).
CATS AND DOGS
When a sim hears a ghostly yowl from a ghost pet.
SEASONS
When there's a storm or a blizzard and the sim is outside. When a sim is inside and there's a storm outside When a sim almost gets struck by a lightning. When they react negatively to a Scarecrow.
GET FAMOUS
When a sim gets trapped in a vault. When a famous sim receives a text from an obsessed fan.
GAME PACKS
Strangerville: After a sim has tried to talk with a possessed sim. *
- When bizarre roots come out of a sink/toilet/shower/bath.
- After a Paranoid sim has looked up for conspiracy theories.
Jungle Adventures: When a sim is near a service skeleton and the buff is negative.
Vampires: After a human sim has slept in a coffin and the outcome is negative.
- When a vampire bites a sim, the victim will be scared of the bite at first.
Parenthood: When a sim breaks the rules while being grounded.
STUFFS
Spooky Stuff: When a sim picks up a candy from the candy bowl, and the outcome is negative.
Movie Hangout Stuff: When a sim has finished to watch a horror movie. *
This mod also needs a trait called "Cowardly" and "Brave"
Cowardly: These kind of sims get a "+1 Troubled" buff whenever they are worried, and will be scared during the bump in the night. When they are scared they occasionally "faint". Cowardly Sims will faint when they encounter the Grim Reaper, a ghost, a burglar, or fire, and will get the "Scared" moodlet. When Cowardly Sims stay in a dark room or outside at night, they will get "Afraid of the dark" moodlet instead of "It's dark" moodlet. Cowards will, in panic, initiate fights with Vampires or even run away from vampires. They might faint after getting pranked with the scary computer. Cowardly sim have a scared reaction when misfortune strikes nearby Sims.
Brave: These Sims are never scared and if there's a fire, they will put it out. They also deal with burglars. With a Sim or vampire, it can be useful when exploring tombs or caves as they won't be scared by bugs and never get the "Fear" moodlet. They won't be scared by ghosts and vampires (Which vampires cause the "Hunted" moodlet). They are also tended to be more confident when they are in a haunted lot
I also want a Horror Channel call Shiver.
It shows
A vampire movie but in the end Vampire lord gets attacked by aliens
A stalker film (with a twist ending) with victim was stalking have a horrible ugly face that making the stalker scared and run away.
A story about Hooper a pug is left behind in the break of an Zombie apocalypse. All he wants to do is get back to his owner a little boy that he loves dearly. This movie is similar to Lost Dog's Journey Home movie.
The Khlumzee Sisters and Hold That Ghost Cat - A black-and-white horror and slapstick comedy of the Sliver Screen: After inheriting a fortune from a gangster, three dim-witted service station attendants find themselves stranded in a haunted house with a ghost of a cat and his owner's spirit.
Vampire Cafe - A Sitcom about three vampires working where they meet weird vampires, serve weird Plasma food and battle with their evil boss.
Zomba Zeen by Tom Clark And The Dischords Music - A black and white and 50's themed music video about a battle between a mad scientist named Zomda and an Alien named Zeen
Invader from Sixam: StrangerVille Horror - A vintage 80's horror origin story theory by sims about how the plant mother was created and how it arrived on StrangerVille.
A Talk show featuring monsters and the supernatural. The host of the show is a vampire featuring the wolfman.
A mystery comedy featuring Mystery Solvers and their cat Blu are finding clues to a spooky house mystery of a ghost guarding the houses treasure by scaring people away. This is reference as a Scooby-Doo Sims 4 Parody.
Sims who watch this channel will become scared for several hours if they watch this channel but not for brave sims
I hope with this change I hope the SimGurus can add this as a Halloween Patch.

EA Play 2018
My inner geek is squeaking of excitement today because I was able to attend EA Play, play Seasons and Unravel 2 (definitely going to purchase, it was super fun, especially with a second player). I’ve been waiting anxiously for EA Play, booked my session for today at 12 PM. Despite of almost zero waiting time in line people were allowed to play for 15 minutes only. There were 4 saves with each season. I got so lost when realized that I don’t know how to use Sims 3 style camera, I never used it before. Had to change the settings but definitely lost some time trying to tame sims 3 style camera. I took a few pictures of new CAS categories, can’t believe that I forgot to take pictures when I actually clicked on cold and hot weather categories. According to SimguruGrant, who was so nice to explain how it works, 2 new categories will have tags that work similarly to everyday, party, situation and other clothing tags. CC should be fine, but I suspect it will need additional tagging if you want your custom puffer coats to appear in cold weather clothes category. So better keep your clothing folders organized. Don’t quote me on this though, we will need to wait and see, but my experience as CC maker tells me that I might be right. Here are some pictures (not a lot since 15 minutes is really allows only to get a glimpse).
More pictures and information about weather machine (plus a tiny video), flower stand, scarecrow below
Weather machine menu.
Here is a video of falling leaves and rain created by weather machine. I don’t know why didn’t record in landscape mode, I was drunk. Kidding, I don’t drink alcohol
youtube
Scarecrow menu. Apparently, sims can troll scarecrows :).
Flower stand. Looks like we will be able to make bouquets out of whatever we have in inventory. I didn’t check the inventory to confirm. But from the menu it looks like it. It will be so nice to utilize 167 bluebells, 221 snapdragons and 78 chrysanthemums that I have in my inventory.
What else?
There is a new category in Activities and Skills.
Some winter interactions when you click on the snow.
Snowman. I was curious if sim’s mood affects the way they make a snowman, but still don’t know whether it’s random or snowman appearance depend’s on sim’s mood. By the way, those decorations on the house sparkle like real garland, the light is sort of runs from top to the bottom if you know what I mean. Really beautiful detail.
There is time and weather menu.
Another screenshot of a calendar.
Holiday items category.
I was trying to take a picture of falling leaves but didn’t succeed. It looks really nice.
I was going to ta 9ke a lo 9ok at umbrella stand, and completely forgot about it. So later I came back to ask SimguruGrant how does it work and if it’s going to be a customizable object. Umbrella stand has 10-ish recolors (according to Grant, cause I forgot to take a look at this item), and there is a chance that it’s going to be customizable (modable). It’s done in a bit different way than furniture or other build menu items, but there is a chance that we will be able to recolor it as a custom content. Personally I will be super thrilled cause in real life I own something like 10 different umbrellas and they are a part of my look. So yay!
I saw someone reported that ice skate rink is a part of the world. I don’t think so, because it was in build menu, and if I had enough space on the lot I would be able to place it right there. It is huge though, like really huge.
I didn’t notice any new aspirations or traits. But will not say 100% that there is no new aspiration.
I took a look only at 2 seasons due to time limit. Conclusion, Will I buy it? Hell yes! I’ve been waiting for University EP because I have 2 teens that are about to become young adults (I am keeping them as teens for over a year already), but Seasons is sort of like a breath of fresh air with its beautiful fall and winter (didn’t check summer and spring) so I don’t mind waiting some more time. But dear EA, please, make next EP about university [wink, wink].
If you want to see bigger pictures you can take a look at them here.

EA’s back on their bullsh!t again, it seems.
Are they seriously gonna piecemeal every frikkin lifestate now, to make people pay $20 a pop for vamps, witches, faeries, genies, werewolves, and whatever else they’re effed all to make?
ALL OF THEM, DUH! What’s with splitting the vote like that? Will the winning lifestate feature in a new expansion, or another game pack? Why can’t they just make a TS4 Supernatural/Makin Magic EP and have done with it?
Don’t get me wrong. I almost fainted when TS4 Vampires was released. To date it’s the ONLY content released for TS4 that I was legitimately interested in. I’m just not gonna waste money on TS4 with all it’s limitations and hooplah, all for one frikkin game pack that’s no more than half of an expansion pack.
Supernatural was juggling witches, fae, wolves, vamps, zombies, plus the toadsims & tragic clowns. I understand the argument that putting the occults in separate GPs could allow EA to focus more on them, rather than trying to cram every occult into one pack again. But I don’t agree with it. Cuz Late Night only had one frikkin lifestate, and EA COMPLETELY FAILED to deliver reasonable vampires in that EP.
While I don’t think EA deserves an A+ for any of SN’s occults, cuz all of them should’ve been better and EA dropped the ball on half of them, the Witches get a solid A from me. While I think EA was thoroughly retarded not to enable magic for children (y’all know Skydome has my effing heart for modding that piece of perfection!), the other ages are so much fun. Even in TS2 they were my fave lifestate. Each game they did something different, so I hope in TS4 EA has new witches in TS4 (apparently it’s winning in the poll by a landslide).
First, EA, let kids do magic, stupids. A school of magic would be perfect, tbh!
Different color magic, PLEASE! Different types/elements and levels on the good/bad side can have different colors/effects running the entire spectrum from red to yellow, green, blue, and purple, and black and white.
Next, elemental magic. I’m sick of Fire Blast and Ice Blast. Where’s the control over weather and animals (and shapeshifting!)? Eff the Weather Stone, where’s my Sith Lord lightning at!?
Also, I’d like it if the familiars did a little bit more than just buff their power. Let magical pets be able to actually talk only to other witches or something.
Maybe unlock more interactions between them, like sending pets to spy on others to steal secrets or spells or something, a la Maleficent & Diablo.
I’d love some sort of Wiccan nod to herbology, tea leaves, candles, celebrating Walpurgis Night, Beltane and the other solstices/equinoxes, and Eco Living (remember that SP y’all said y’all were gonna make, then simmers ended up with shiny new ozone layer killing laundry machines?)
They also need to hold seances/exorcisms/possession, as a new kind of sims psychic, to make use of all those ghosts, skeletons, and undead creatures.
I mean, why be a witch if you can’t have friends on the other side?
PLEASE bring back the TS2/TSM Good/Bad witches, with some dark magic – y’all already made voodoo dolls & zombies & all that Dia de los Muertos lookin’ stuff – incorporate it into actual witchcraft! Give these sims some frikkin alliances, ranks, dynamic conflicts and tensions, for crying out loud!
Plus, more stuff for witches to use and do, than just wands and alchemy. Ouija boards, taking on apprentices, creating ACTUAL COVENS, and all.
I’m just saying! Witches can be a full-fledged expansion all by their dang selves, if y’all actually took the frikkin thing seriously!
I would buy this kind of TS4 EP, if they did it right.

Now I just need horses and my life will be complete ! I love the country side / farming life for my sims, I don't need into the future type of stuff
I’m the same, Anon! I’d love for us to get a farming or horse pack with a rural world! You may have seen this but SimGuruGrant on Twitter did a poll asking what we’d want in a farming pack. He wasn’t promising that they’re working on it, just getting a feel for what people are looking for, but it’s cool to think that they’re at least looking at it!

The Sims 5: SimGuruGrant Talks About Project Rene
During this Behind The Sims stream, SimGuruGrant (yes THE Grant) gave players some new info bits on the progress of the next iteration of The Sims, Project Rene.
The game, which is currently in its very early stages of development, has a working title “Project Rene.” This name was chosen to be reminiscent of words like renaissance and rebirth to represent the team’s renewed commitment for The Sims’ bright future.

Sims 4 Patch Update
Make sure to remember to remove all Mods/CC and back up your Save Files.
UPDATE: 08/16/2018 - PC 1.46.18.1020/ Mac 1.46.18.1220
Hey Simmers!
Summer will be over soon, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the warm weather with some free content for the community. The Sims community is truly global, which means we have so many fun stories to tell with events like Diwali, Day of the Dead, and more. Through our Sims’ clothing, furniture, food, and activities, we are trying to celebrate the diversity within our community.
With summer in full swing, we shifted our gaze towards the sunny Caribbean and its vibrant, colorful clothing and styles. With Carnival taking place throughout the region, we took inspiration from the traditional patterns to craft some hip, modern clothing for your Sims to wear to a party, or perhaps the last picnic of the summer.
In this pack you’ll find three new hairs, two of which have beautiful curls & textures! There are also numerous new clothing assets, some makeup, and even a little furniture. We should mention that it includes a ceiling fan and sliding door…
Check out the new assets, tell us what you think, and be sure to share your stories and creations in the Gallery!
Now for this month’s patch notes.
Grant Rodiek, aka SimGuruGrant
The Sims 4
Screenshots taken using the C key are no longer fuzzy. We had some schmutzle on the lens we had to clean off.
There are now three new hairs, as well as a head wrap.
In case you are looking for even more hair, there’s a new stubbly beard!
There is an abundance of new clothing! We added two feminine tops, two skirts, snazzy sweatpants, a new suit, and some sandals. And if you can’t decide how to set it up, there are new Featured Looks to kickstart your ideas (one male, one female).
Can’t we makeup? There are new lipsticks, new eyeshadows, and new eyeliners.
There are now four sliding doors.
There is now a ceiling fan, in case you were curious about that breeze.
We have added a new wallpaper - look for its leafy goodness!
There is a new coffee table, potted plant, living chair, loveseat, and painting.
We fixed an issue where thought bubbles would overlap and never go away. It should be fixed now, at least, that is our thought. Bubble. Get it.
The word “Queer” is no longer banned by the profanity filter. As language evolves, it’s important we stay on top of these things, so thank you for the feedback.
The Walls Down and Cutaway View options function as expected if an additional active Sim is added to your household when visiting an NPC home.
Two Sims can no longer try to pick up/wrangle a toddler at the same time.
Family Trees should accurately represent a Sim’s lineage now with non-blank thumbnails.
Build Mode and Gallery music will no longer collide for dominance. We accidentally introduced a bug that was more or less the worst version of Battle of the Bands.
Expansion Pack, Game Pack, and any Stuff Pack fish types now count towards the Collect 20 Types of Fish goal from the Angling Ace Aspiration.
You can now live-drag microphones and place them in a Sim’s inventory.
Get to Work
Employees now deduct funds when restocking, so it’s no longer free. But also, the cheaper restocking perk now works for employees. We giveth, we taketh away.
Romantic Garden Stuff
The Wishing Well now gives you a soulmate with the gender of your Sim’s romantic preference.
City Living
Sims walking around San Myshuno now act like it’s cold outside, or hot, as you’d expect, if Seasons is installed.
Seasons
Sims now dress appropriately for the weather to mourn.
Sims conducting athletic activity like basketball and jogging will no longer freeze to death. Sporting is once again safe.
If you have Laundry Day Stuff, seasonal clothing changes won’t generate so many clothing piles.
There was an issue where Sims you created, but weren’t currently playing, would be affected by weather, and therefore might immediately freeze to death when trying to play them. This seemed like a poor way to play The Sims, so we fixed it.
Miscellaneous
Various Text and Translation changes and improvements.
