Friday, April 28: Dio, “Living the Lie”
R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio (1942-2010)
Master of the Moon was initially derided as too mid-paced and more than a little rote, and was largely forgotten in the ensuing years as Ronnie James Dio continued touring behind his back catalogue before reuniting with his former Sabbath mates under the Heaven and Hell for a glorious final run. But although the record was by no means one of his best, the last album under the Dio moniker ultimately had its share of simple pleasures, with tunes like “Living the Lie” cruising at a pace that suited Ronnie’s diminished but still compelling (and committed) vocals. Craig Goldy and Simon Wright, as co-writers, both understood exactly what they needed to do, and the riffing and drumming recalled vintage Dio without trying to recreate The Last in Line, so everything from the composition to the performance felt natural for all involved. With the benefit of hindsight, it was much easier to appreciate and even enjoy “Living the Lie” for what it was, which was a driving heavy metal tune played with finesse by a band of lifers and one resolutely focused icon.

Wednesday, November 1: John Norum, "Dogs are Barking"
John Norum was a perfectly fine singer on his first few solo albums, but it was still a smart move to recruit a proper band for Worlds Away, and a group of heavy hitters at that: with Peter Baltes, Simon Wright and most notably Kelly Keeling on vocals, this may have been largely a journeyman outfit, but there would be no disputing the quality of the playing. “Dogs are Barking” fell on the bluesier end, quite a bit like Keeling’s concurrent work with MSG, and alongside that Norum threw in a great solo that had Schenker-ish tones. Perhaps because the tune was co-written with Billy White, it also vaguely recalled the time Norum, White and Baltes spent in Don Dokken’s solo band, but more than that it felt like a bit of a precursor to what Norum would bring to reunited Europe. “Dogs are Barking” was full of simple and easygoing pleasures, like this was something the guys worked out over a jam session, and as such was perhaps not remarkable on its own, but as a showcase for a band of talented players it did its job.
