Nope, That Is Not a Blouse: Simplicity 9817

This set of re-issued accessories from the 1950s has some expected items and some unusual ones. Collars and cuffs that could be switched out, and thus give some variety to one dress, were a standard feature from at least the late 19th Century onward. Here, you see two rounded versions and one designed to look like lapels on a blouse.

Hair bows too date way back although this is a bow on a headband which was a newer look in the 1950s. The bias-cut sash, which you see on the bottom row in red and in green stripes is also a traditional idea and here it is pulled through a buckle.

A newer idea was the dickey that looked like a blouse. These were often recommended during World War II when fabric was hard to get. A woman could use just a small bit of fabric, maybe a remnant from a bigger project, and could give a new look under a dress that could not be replaced. It was also possible, as it is suggested by these illustration to wear a dickey under a suit as you see in the lower right hand corner with a two-color version. Yes, it looks like a wrapped blouse or a halter top, but this item actually has back and no sides and ties at the waist. I am not sure I see the point unless you had a desperate lack of fabric. Wouldn't it be no more difficult to make a halter top, or a sleeveless blouse? And surely, wearing an actual top would be more comfortable and less awkward, and allow you to doff your jacket if you liked.

I'll be dressing for the Halloween season for the next 2 weeks.This dress used #Simplicity9291 (or #Butterick6453 before the realignment, they're the same pattern), made from a very stiff quilter's cotton. The only alterations was making the bodice about an inch longer. It coordinates perfectly with my skeleton earrings. I added the jacket cause it's chilly today. Fun fact, I actually made this dress for a Christmas thing. That Not So Simple Knit Dress: Simplicity 5364 from 1972

We tend to thinks of knits as perfect for very simple garments we simply pull on. The T-shirt, T-shirt dress, leggings, etc. But when knits first became common in women's wear because of innovations in machines that could knit fabric, they were not shown as all that simple. The T-shirt dress showed up in the 1950s and came with the full assortment of accessories including hat and gloves. The synthetic knits which became so popular in the 1960s still had zippers down the backs of the dresses they were made from.

Similarly, this formal evening dress from the early 1970s required a knit fabric, see the "STRETCH" directions on the front that literally stretched out the font. It was not a great deal of stretch, in truth. 4 inches had to stretch to a bit over 5 inches, while we have super stretchy rayon/lycras today that practically double in width when pulled hard. But it was far more stretch than the "bonded knits" which were popular for A-line shapes and had no stretch at all (and not purpose as far as i can see). They especially recommended matte jersey (which would be Quiana in those days), cire jersey (which has a wet look and would have looked sooooo louche), and tricot (which we see today only in lingerie fabrics). But any jersey with stretch from cotton to rayon to polyester or nylon was approved.

With only a bit of stretch built into the fabric, the pattern, which was close fitting, has shaped front and back pieces and back straps. It shuts at the back neck with buttons and loops while a zipper shuts the back bodice and then the top of the long gathered skirt.

It gives you an idea of how formal an evening gown could still look in the 1970s even after the Youth Quake revolution in fashion which claimed there should be no rules of any kind of clothing. But people still liked to dress up, so they never gave up on formality entirely.

Pulled this out of a giant box of vintage patterns my aunt had ages ago, and just realized that the largest include size is 2" away from my normal bust/waist measurements. Depending on how long this quarantine lasts, I may copy the pieces out (carefully and not cutting the possibly damaged paper) and try grading it up enough to fit! Someone said "Someday you'll have to start dressing like and adult" to me today. I don't know why they chose this outfit to ridicule, but they did. It's okay, you can be jealous of my skirt. It's handmade, using quilter's cotton & #Simplicity8211. A BIG MOOD! | #swipeleft and read!! 😬😬😬So I made this dress AND the headwrap. My inspiration for this dress was a Cynthia Rowley dress I couldn’t afford but I found a simplicity pattern that came REALLY close so I was like “try it”! At first I wasn’t feeling it but now I am.
