If Mario was in... Splatoon 4
((and idea that came from me thinking about the consequences of life long propaganda and dj octavio))
One day in Inkopolis. after a long day of Turf War a young Inkling named Que is heading home when he spots fucking Callie Cuttlefish from The Squid Sisters conversing with THE Mario, hero of the Mushroom Kingdom talking urgently over something along the lines of not finding a the right inkling with the spark they're looking for or whatever to help in they're mission or something like that, then they soon enter the man hole cover they were near after they finished talking (but not before looking around a bit too make sure the coast is clear unaware of the teal haired inkling watching them) obviously VERY intrigued and also being a HUGE Squid Sister's fan, Que does the only thing any reasonable Inkfish would do in that moment
he follows them in
after narrowly losing them several times and having to just follow his gut instinct half the trip he ends up finding himself in what looks to be a valley with a lone shack to the side, before he could do anything however he immediately gets shot at by fuckign Mario so that's one way to meet a celebrity, after much calming down and yelling (mostly from Que) Callie goes and asks who he was and more importantly how he got here, Que after taking a few moments to compose himself (cause oh my god THE Callie Cuttlefish is talking to him) explains to her how he saw them nearby and how the enter a manhole cover and went to follow them here, Callie realising that HE could be they're new agent that they need and decides to hire the guy on the spot despite his immense confusion and so Callie explains to him just what the NSS is and also brings him up to speed on what's going on
1 month ago Meggy Spletzer (yes the Turfwar Tournament Champ) went missing and the NSS have been searching for her to no avail, then as if things couldn't have gotten worse the Great Zapfish went missing (yes again) and this time they know DJ Octavio and the Octarians didn't take it because he was too busy searching for missing octarians (mainly the ones who were either sanitised or fuzzified) with Cuttlefish's help so to the say the NSS had they're tentacles full was an understatement, it's gotten to the point that it's been all tentacles on deck from Agent 1 up to the retired Captain Cuttlefish, they even had to call in back-up and futher assistance from outside which also included the Glitchy Gang, which is why Mario is here, very stressed and worried for his best friend because of what happened the last time she went missing and yeah, it's been rough
And so Agent 9 was indoctrinated to the NSS and meets the rest of the agents, including a very overworked, exhausted and smelly Captain 3 who barely even registered that the new kid was here (yeah, Callie and Marie wrestled them and was forced to take a nap and a bath after the kid left to clear out his first Kettle with Cuttlefish as a guide)
After many trials, bonding with the other agents and clearing kettles, Agent 9 eventually discovers that an Octaling by the name of Buster wanted to succeed where Octavio failed at and that was taking the Zap Fish to reverse the effects from the Great Turf War meaning he wanted take over the surface for their people, and wrangled up the remaining octarians who weren't there to hear the Calamari Inkantation all those years ago and ended up rallying in a lot of troops surprisingly enough (mostly because he also wrangled up the Sanitised Octolings from the Metro via using Tartar's tech and the Fuzzified Octolings Grizz left behing) however before he would set his plan into motion he sent out a squad of octolings to capture the one who started the down fall of DJ Octavio and that was Agent 3 however because of a misunderstanding he thought that the identity of the "Scourge of the Domes" was in fact Meggy Spletzer, the Turfwar Tournament Champ and so she was kidnapped instead of Paige,
Que ends up accidentally reuniting a boy band named Wh5irl_P00l (Which comprises of Polaris the leader, Boreas the smart one, Aithne the sensitive one who is currently missing, Crux the fun one and Miguel who left the group during their world tour and has never been heard from since) and during his exploits and also gave them unintentional therapy to finally band together to look for they're missing heart, Aithne and also assist Que on his own search for clues
Soon enough with the help of Wh5rl_P00l Que finds out about something about Meggy he never expected, see he always assumed that Meggy was full of herself and didn't really like her but over the course of his tim as Agent 9 he slowly realsied his assumptions were wrong when he saw just how much her friends care about her and the information he found out after defeating the 3rd octoweapon basically hit the final nail in the coffin that was his slowly changing view on the Turf War Tournament Champion
Meggy early on in her capture found out that Buster was after Agent 3 aka Paige and not wanting Paige to get hurt played along with Buster's assumption (which unfortunately lead to her getting a few bones broken, which is an uncomfortable feeling for her honestly among many other torture methods, but its a price she's willing to take) and so with this new information, Que's effectively changed opinion on Meggy and a shit ton of coffee, a plan was formed and with all the extra man power they had, Operation: Save Meggy Electric-Boogaloo was a go
After many memey shenaniganry and other inkfish related bs, the managed to finally rescue an albiet heavily injured but still alive Meggy who looked like she had a slight stroke upon meeting the Members of Wh5rl_P00l for some reason oh well that's probably something for later (no one didn't really pay attention to that though it was just Que) and they were also able to find Aithne who turned out to actually be an octoling who didn't hear the Inkantation but just left with his squad mates who did which honestly Wh5irl_P00l should have known in hindsight
Unfortunately though despite this happy reunions they're outnumbered by a LARGE margin of octarians like 120 to 20 but then Agent 4 gets a BRILLIANT idea, if these octarians weren't there to hear the Calamari Inkantation the first time what if they get to hear it now? and so after being yeeted by mario into the same room where the main sound system was and splatting the octoling that was stationed there he uploads the song then PLAYS IT ON THE SPEAKERS FOR ALL OCTOLINGS TO HEAR
needless to say this brilliant plan worked wonders, effectively subduing literally every single octarian both fuzzified, sanitised or otherwise into surrender
all but one
Buster who planned for this situation in case he ever were to "impossibly" fail created a revamped and new and improved version of Octavio's Octobot with outside sound proofing to boot to prevent himself from hearing what he quotes as "the deserting siren song, the musical poison the weakened his people" and so he attacks to both eliminate his enemies and the traitors of the octarian way or so he puts it
and so an all out brawl broke out, words were thrown, giant fists were flung, explosions were set and so and so after one final stand and push thanks to the reunited Wh5rl_P00l and a surprise back up in Octavio with the gaurds with his OWN OG Octobot the NSS are finally able to defeat the would be warmonger, unfortunately in the whole fight Buster unintentionally triggered the self destruct sequence in his Octobot when he was knocked unconscious so they gotta go ASAP and everyone gets all the missing octarians out of the underground base (Buster included because this whole mess was technically Octavio's fault)
*Insert running away from explosions narrowly michael bay style here*
((I'll post the aftermath later im eepy))

Dead wife disease
It’s funny, in a dark sort of way, that across the years and across media. Gracey loses his wife in increasingly tragic ways to the point it’s sort of comical. No wife Georg
It is additionally funny as in most cases his wife turns out to be the heartbeat bride/Emily De Claire in several of these cases
Edward Gracey (2003)-
Bride to be is poisoned. She is also the ghost bride, however she’s a orb most of the runtime. Edward hangs himself -> it’s a nod to the ghost host but not direct.

William Gracey (2005)-
Bride to be is scared to death by pirate ghosts as a way of getting back at him. She is the beating heart bride and her name is Emily de Claire. William hangs himself and in this case is the ghost host, adding fuel to the theory. He is also Captain blood referencing a character from a og concept for the ride. (He’s 3 characters in one)

William Gracey (2023)-
Same name as the SLG and one of the more popular ones for him. This time he is fully married and his wife is not the bride but dies of Yellow fever. William poisoned himself and the ghost host is a separate/cameo character and there’s no real noose motif anywhere.
Aging man/Master Gracey (1971)
Presumed bitchless.
The ride does not connect him with anyone besides the family plot who don’t make physical appearances. Some see him as with Sally slater? I still like to have him with the beating heart bride because the comics control my brain (though most see her and Hatty as a thing.)

Major Study
Production Post #2
Concept Design: Hover Vehicle
After my thumbnail exploration, I had a look at some other artists approaches to thumbnailing and came across concept artist Dylan Pharaoh-Whitney's work. He created these during a mentorship with heavy-weight Anthony Jones. What I loved most about the thumbnails were the great shape combinations, but also being able to see more detail with the plating and general construction of these bikes.

Thumbnails by Dylan Pharaoh-Whitney
I also had a look at Destiny 2's Sparrow designs as they are very similar to what I would like to produce for my game idea - a personal hovering craft that isn't too large.

Destiny 2 Sparrow designs
I began adding some more detail to my thumbnails thinking about the animals which inspired them, but also aerodynamics, shape, and solar sail deployment and positions.
After a peer review, the most popular vote was the Elysia 2, there was also interest in the first two Manta Ray designs which I also plan on revisiting if there is time. One of the points of interest of the Elysia is the animation of the solar wings for movement, which could be animated in a wave-like formation.
After being inspired by Dylan's work during his mentorship with Anthony Jones, I revisited some of Anthony's painting videos and thought I would try some of the techniques I saw there while developing my Elysia 2 concept. I really enjoyed this way of working with light and shadows as opposed to line, I've used this technique in the past, but I think I will probably continue to use it for this study.
When detailing this design, I made some alterations to the functionality of the craft - it changed from being a bike-like craft to having an enclosed cockpit. This was because I couldn't find a comfortable position for the rider allowing space for the solar wings. At the moment, I'm basing the solar cell designs on this solar fabric. I plan to create a proper design as I've already briefly explored in my pre-production.

I asked for some peer feedback for this design and there was some confusion about the solar wings being a single row beneath the vehicle, or a pair. I had opted not to include the second row on the far side because of visual confusion, but it was the wrong decision as it caused the confusion I was trying to avoid.
I wanted this vehicle to be affectionately referred to as "The Slug" in-game as an ode to the origin of it's design. I wanted to create an acronym to give it meaning so I took it to ChatGPT which came up with some excellent solutions. In the end, I felt the shorter "SLG" worked best for it's brevity and also the branding as "SLUG" felt too on-the-nose.

I combined the feedback and branding elements to the design. For the sake of allowing some space for the eye to rest in the design, I opted to outline the large "SLG" on the rear of the craft.
I would still like to create some exploration sketches showing the opening mechanism of the cockpit (split along the top and sliding backwards over the rear of the craft), and some animation options for the animation of the solar wings as well as deployment.

CNN Peckham Market/ SLG exhibition: There's a spirit here': Exhibition shines a light on London's 'Little Lagos'
“There’s a spirit here,” said filmmaker Adeyemi Michael who was born in Lagos and raised in Peckham. When he was growing up, Michael skated up Peckham Rye to buy groceries for his mom, and says he felt embraced by the Nigerian community there. “The high street reflect(ed) my experience growing up as a Nigerian-born South Londoner,” he recalled.
“I’ve been moving around a lot these days,” Michael added. “Whenever I come back, I’m always met by the soul of this area and the people who still remain here, most of (whom) are immigrants and people who come from different walks of life.”
Folakunle Oshun: “For way too long the migrant communities in the UK have always taken a back seat. For this show it was really important to give the artists that voice and create a show that’s super empowering for years to come.”
Margot Heller, South London Gallery’s director, said the exhibition uses Lagos as an entry point to look at wider issues around migration, shifting senses of identity and the idea of home.
She explained that over the last few decades there has been significant growth in Peckham’s Nigerian community, coming in waves throughout the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s, with people purchasing property and setting up businesses.
“Peckham became known as a kind of second home for people visiting the UK from Nigeria,” she said. “Some of them staying, and some of them returning, which is very much part of the exhibition concept.”
Initially, “Entitled” was born out of frustration, Michael explained. He felt his mother was being side-lined in a job she worked for 25 years, because she was a first-generation Nigerian immigrant.
He began looking at Napoleonic images of people considered conquerors, and researched Frederich Lugard who furthered British imperialism across West and East Africa. Michael wanted to portray his mother as having the same kind of power, in the clothing of her Yoruba heritage (one of Nigeria’s three largest ethnic groups).
“When you see my mum dressed in traditional Yoruba wear on a horse in Peckham, it’s a statement,” he said. “I did that for her, for other people too – it means something.”

Eternal Elegance: Exploring the Enchanting Diamonds Collection
Introduction
Diamonds have always held a special place in the world of luxury and elegance. These precious gemstones, formed deep within the Earth's crust over millions of years, have captivated the hearts of generations with their sparkling brilliance and timeless beauty. In this article, we will delve into the world of diamonds and explore the enchanting Diamonds Collection, a testament to nature's artistry and mankind's craftsmanship.

The Allure of Diamonds
For centuries, diamonds have symbolized love, purity, and endurance. Their unique combination of fire, brilliance, and rarity has made them the ultimate choice for expressing deep emotions and commemorating important milestones. From engagement rings to exquisite jewelry pieces, diamonds have a universal appeal that transcends cultures and eras.
The Diamonds Collection
The Diamonds Collection is a curated selection of some of the world's most exquisite and rare diamonds, each handpicked for its exceptional quality and character. This collection is a celebration of the artistry of nature and the craftsmanship of skilled jewelers who transform these precious gems into works of art.
The Classic Elegance: The Diamonds Collection features a range of classic diamond cuts, including round brilliant, princess, emerald, and cushion cuts. These timeless shapes are the epitome of elegance and versatility, making them perfect for any occasion.
Fancy Color Diamonds: Beyond the traditional white diamonds, the collection includes a dazzling array of fancy color diamonds. These rare gems come in shades of blue, pink, yellow, and more, adding a touch of uniqueness and personality to each piece.
Vintage and Modern: Whether you prefer the vintage charm of antique diamond jewelry or the contemporary allure of modern designs, the Diamonds Collection has something to offer. From vintage-inspired engagement rings to sleek and minimalist diamond necklaces, there's a piece for every style.
Custom Creations: The collection also offers the opportunity for bespoke creations. Expert jewelers can work with clients to design custom pieces that reflect their individual tastes and preferences, ensuring that each diamond becomes a unique masterpiece.
The 4 Cs of Diamonds
To understand the allure of the Diamonds Collection fully, it's essential to grasp the concept of the "4 Cs" that determine a diamond's quality:
Carat: This measures the diamond's weight, with larger diamonds typically being more valuable.
Clarity: Clarity refers to the presence of internal and external flaws, known as inclusions and blemishes. The fewer imperfections a diamond has, the higher its clarity grade.
Color: The absence of color is highly prized in diamonds. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamonds on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown).
Cut: The cut of a diamond refers to its proportions, symmetry, and polish. A well-cut diamond will exhibit maximum brilliance and sparkle.
Conclusion
The Diamonds Collection is a testament to the enduring allure of these precious gemstones. From classic elegance to modern sophistication, this collection showcases the versatility and timelessness of diamonds in jewelry design. Whether you're seeking a symbol of love, a statement piece, or a unique custom creation, the Diamonds Collection offers a world of options, each one reflecting the beauty and rarity of these exceptional gems. Embrace the eternal elegance of diamonds and let them become a cherished part of your jewelry collection, celebrating the beauty of nature and the artistry of mankind.

a question i've been questioning for a hot while: what is YOUR local edgy cringe 2015ish 13 yo (/pos) kid culture like? like yeah we know fnaf, dan and phil, string chokers, yandere sim etc but there are definitely local variants, can attest because i was one of those kids but didn't speak two licks of english back then so i was watching squeezie play fnaf not markiplier. some french specifics elements of the weird internet kid culture imo (feel free to add on to this or your own local version pls im too curious) :
amour sucré
karal (there are definitely more prominent youtubers that played all THOSE games that flooded gaming youtube but i had a soft spot for her)
crazybomb and retake
25 (i saw someone mention it out of wattpad once i KNOW at least one person here read it come out)
jack and the cuckoo-clock heart
la chanson des licornes (natoo in general too but i remember this fucking song being peak humor to me and my friends for a hot minute)
"ta meilleure amie" by ornella tempesta (if you related to this song back then i'm genuinely sorry for you but i recently remembered it existed, listened to it and it wasn't even close to be as bad as i remember. mental health matter but what was that.)
#un peu nostalgique de cette époque quand-même#l'internet français des années 2010s <3#l'époque où tu étais cringe. mais libre. elle me manque un peu.#j'avoue il y a certains trucs j'y pense encore

I know the current comics are still in 1997, as that is where we left off in the SLG run. I know someday we will hopefully reach today, but that depends on how long Dynamite and Disney let Greg Wiesman keep writing Gargoyles.
Which, more than anything, having Greg at the wheel is all most Gargoyles fans want. It's his baby, he deserves to work on it.
What you've described isn't necessarily a reboot, where the old story is completely rewritten into a whole new story, just with a similar concept and the same or similar characters.
What you seem to be talking about is a continuation, which is currently happening, and what many fans, including myself, have been yelling for, with the same story and the same characters without having to be completely reintroduced to new versions of them.
Also, small tidbit, Diane Maza has family from Nigeria, but she herself was born and raised in New York, same as all three of her children.
I do agree that it would be interesting to see how the gargoyles would be by the time the 2020s come around.
It has been stated that Elisa and Goliath will eventually have a commitment ceremony (gargoyle wedding) and adopt a human child together.
Going by gargoyle biology, Broadway and Angela would have had their first egg together, and Brooklyn and Katana their third (would hatch in 2018).
Gnash would probably be a lot like his dad at his age.
Hudson would honestly be surprised he's lived as long as he has (gargoyles can be up to 200, but usually didn't make it that long back then because of all the battles and smashing).
Either Lex would go to London to be with Amp, or more likely Amp would come to New York to be with Lex because Lex is a main character.
Would COVID affect gargoyles? Can they catch it? And if so, would it even survive their stone sleep?
Would they get in trouble for going out during lockdown?
But I guess in all reality we'll just have to wait and see, and hope we keep getting more Gargoyles.
I heard they might be actually make a reboot of Gargoyles
And people are upset it’s going to be woke…
Someone literally said they don’t want them to trans everyone’s gender and make them gayified
Lexington was canonically gay when the show and the comics were made
Elisa is half indigenous and half black but her mom is an African immigrant
Her father was an indigenous cop
They have Macbeth who is still alive but in his play he was killed by a cross dresser/ assumed trans person
The villain was a capitalist
So I don’t think they will be making it more work but more modern
In my opinion if they try to do a reboot it will be hit or miss
As interesting as it would be to see it redone with modern issues I think it will read better if it’s 20 years later
People know of the Gargoyles, they lived through Covid
They reference the comics
Elisa and Goliath adopt a kid or two (maybe humans, maybe gargoyles)
Sadly Hudson would likely be too elderly or even dead but I would like to see him alive and possibly living with his author friend as just friends but I think I’d be okay with them being a couple too
Angela and Broadway have an egg or two
Brooklyn would be preparing more to take over the clan for when Goliath retires
There was the underground clan that had the experiments, would they have some little ones? How did Covid effect them?
Were they ever able to help the clones?
Like there is so much they can do if they make it later then if they try to redo it

NB : Mathieu Sommet abruptly stopped Salut Les Geeks in 2016. Two years later, he started a new series called “YouTube Hero”, in which he explains the pressure and issues of YouTube through a dark, over-the-top webseries. He has now, with a group of friends, started making sketches under a new name: Curry Club.
It was one of the first channels I started watching on YouTube. The humor can be a little too cynical sometimes and political over time (you probably won't like it if you have rightist opinions). You can sometimes forget there's only one person hosting the channel, as Mathieu can modify his voice easily (please give it a listen...)

The more contributions players make, the more revenue and resources they will receive
Meta-universe is a parallel universe carried by digital form, which is usually used to describe the concept of future Internet virtual environment, composed of a perceptible virtual universe in a shared and durable 3D virtual space. The metaverse, the fourth industry of the future, the whole virtual economy, may be the sum of the economic value of the first three industries. The meta-universe is now in the conceptualization period, and its imagination is large. In the future, everything in the real world can be mapped to the virtual world, and there will be its own economic system in the virtual world, and the digital currency will become the "needle of the sea" and "digital gold" of the value of the virtual world.
Planet GameFi is a decentralized SLG type chain game developed based on Plug Chain, a high-performance public chain, which aims to let players enjoy the game and earn more revenue at the same time. The blockchain is the main database for cryptocurrencies and is used to manipulate all data related to transactions. The blockchain consists of a series of blocks in which all transactions are managed and collected in different blocks that act as the data storage units of the blockchain. A block is recorded only when a blockchain node matches in a set of transactions that are considered legitimate.
Planet GameFi Planet's meta-universe begins with more contributions to get more resources
The universe was chaotic at the beginning of development. After many evolutions and civilizations, Planet GameFi, a new continent in the metaverse, was discovered by daring and heroic cosmic players, who became the first metaverse natives. In the new continental map and cosmic space-time, cosmic players start from scratch to build a brand new world system and cosmic kingdom, opening the stage of survival and development. Players first choose a planet node and then select vacant plots to build factories. After building the factory, you can click to view the factory details. Factory basic information includes: factory star, factory address, owners, and production capacity. Productivity coefficient: "Workers" is the sum of coefficients of all employed workers, "Hero characters" is the sum of coefficients of heroes. Production: Last production and current production. Hired workers: Workers are necessary for factory opening, workers may affect factory capacity, workers are upgraded according to the number of factory opening, the higher the level, the higher the factory capacity.
Players get higher revenue and game experience through DAO community
Planet GameFi will automatically upgrade the guild level according to the experience value gained; however, to advance the guild, you need to consume a certain amount of public guild funds as well as time. To advance to the next level, the guild needs to reach the highest level of the previous level and obtain all the experience values of the corresponding level, which can be done by upgrading the factory.
As the guild advances, more resources are available to the guild base: for example, the weekly experience limit is increased; the public guild fund limit is increased; the individual guild coin limit is increased; contracts can be signed with guild NPCs; new guild icons are unlocked, etc. Through the guild, each player can also get higher income and better technical game experience.

Have you seen the books that they have for the Haunted Mansion? It’s called, “Tales From the Haunted Mansion” and it has two books that I know of so far. :)
I'll answer this out of character, since I've been meaning to talk about these for a while anyway.
I enjoy this series, and wish more people would give it a chance. The first one, admittedly, is a bit rough. The author works on an R. L. Stine TV series, and it shows. It feels like a Goosebumps book, down to the archetypes of the kids and the ending. No spoilers, but there is a sort of double twist, which makes me roll my eyes in a "Oh, you scamp!" way.
There is a lot to talk about when it comes to the first book, because I feel like a bunch of things changed in the editing process. At least, that's how it reads to me. The reason I even want to bring that up is because many fans gave up after the first book, and I'd like to explain why I kept with it in hopes that people will give the other two a chance.
When Disney first advertised the series, it was said that the Ghost Host would narrate the stories, and the hitchhiking ghosts would be interrupting along the way. The stories would be about the various spirits in the mansion. (Not too far off from the SLG Haunted Mansion comics of the early 2000s.)
But what happened is we got a plot revolving around this group of generic kids, with the librarian/ Ghost Host telling them stories starring them. There were no hitchhikers causing mischief, and no other characters, (aside from GH), we're already familiar with, aside from some name drops or brief visual cameos. This caused a lot of annoyance with fans.
But the interruption gag is still there. Why do I bring this up? Okay, while Amicus is telling the story, occasionally italic font shows a remark, which is supposed to indicate he's interrupting the normal flow to make a joke. In the first book, this is really awkward, more so than in the latter two. I think the problem is that the narration in the first is far more casual, so that when the interruptions happen, they're in the same tone. It's pointless. Why would Amicus interrupt himself? It doesn't read like omniscient third person; it reads like he's talking. I have a theory that it was originally the HHGs interrupting him, but this idea got nixed, and a lot had to be scrapped and edited, maybe shortly before publication. I also wonder if the kids didn't originally play as big of a role, but the publishers wanted something more general than fan- focused to bring in casual readers. The next two books are chock full of references, not only to the ride, but to Imagineers and other Disney properties. It's written by a fan, aimed at fans. The first collection of stories feels far more like a typical horror anthology. This is all just my speculation, but the vibe of the first book is so different that I can't help but ponder all this.
My "this wasn't how it was originally planned" theory is what made me stick with the series. I figured they changed things to better appeal to kids who aren't familiar with the ride, (stars kids, less Mansion-specific stuff), and would dive into the original concept with subsequent books.
Book two does exactly that. We still have a new character that helps drive the introduction of each haunt's story, but he's far more interesting than the kids. This poor guy is a skeptic seeking a genuine psychic so he can contact his dead sister. So he hears about Madame Leota, and that's what brings him to the Mansion. Not only is this my favorite of the "wrap around" stories, it also has my favorites in the whole collection thus far. Even the snarky interruptions flow better. There is one story in this book though that feels tacked on at the end. Again, no spoilers, but it's incredibly bleak, and involves an abused girl who's room is overrun with roaches. It's so different in tone and has no connection to anything in the Mansion, which makes me wonder if it's something the author had sitting around, so he tossed it in. That one story is my only quibble about the second volume. It stuck out as bizarre.
Anyway, book three. Book three tops the first one for me. Again, some great short stories here. My favorite is the origin of the breathing, bulging door. The author gave this one creepy sight gag a full backstory, and it's awesome. The wrap around, a tale of an untrustworthy delivery crew, isn't bad, but the repeated use of threes and a visual cameo of the hitchhikers made me think they were finally going to have a role. In fact, the advertisement for the book says it's going to be about them. Maybe if I hadn't read that advertisement, I wouldn't have been let down by only getting a brief cameo. I feel it's unfair to blame the author for that, so I tried not to be disappointed in the book itself. If anything, read it for the door story and the one about the mummy. There's a great joke in the mummy's story where it's clearly setting up for a cliche plot point, and then totally switches course in one of the biggest "screw you, reader!" moments I've ever seen in a YA book. I thought it was hilarious.
Some pros:
Amicus Arcane. He's a fantastic representation of the Ghost Host. I hope we eventually get his backstory. He's delightfully snarky, but is serious about his duties and protective of his home.
Really dig the illustrations. I like the crosshatch style.
Most of the stories are good. And even the ones I didn't love, I didn't hate them. A few simply didn't appeal as much to me. Mainly this was in the first collection, because I wasn't invested in the kid characters.
There's this idea that the mansion changes how it appears, depending on the viewer. That's a cool concept. It allows both WDW and DL's to get some love, while emphasizing the supernatural aspect of it.
Con/Pro: The horror moments. I'm adding this more as a warning. Sometimes these books are totally fine for 9-10 year olds... and then a kid gets torn apart by zombies. Or a head is completely spun around on a corpse. The scares are surprisingly graphic for a series published by Disney. For me, this isn't a complaint. It makes me cackle. *But* I'm an adult with a sick sense of humor. I'm not in the group this is aimed at. I also read the Scary Stories and Animorphs series as a kid, so I have a high tolerance for this sort of thing to begin with. If you're not sure if your child/ sibling/ niece, nephew, etc, can handle it, skim it for yourself first. This isn't Saw levels, but they can be disturbing moments for younger readers. Use your discretion.
I know I was vague at times, but I don't want to give away a lot. These books have been such a pleasant surprise for me. I've also forgotten parts, and I didn't want to be inaccurate. Any other questions, let me know. I can pull the books off my shelf.

Stats Club 101 - Counting and Basic Rates
Evan’s Note: Hey, look at this! Another new contributor. We’re growing faster than Ortiz’s ass after the steroid needle hits it. Anyway, everyone say hi to AJ and yeah, go ahead and make another one more when you bring cupcakes to class next week.
———
While Evan, Sam, and now Julio are breaking down players and series previews, I’ll be focusing on the NUMBERS! and SCIENCE! that surround baseball. Before you even think about yawning, let’s be clear: you’re a baseball fan. You do like those things in this context; you just don’t realize it. Hopefully I can help demystify the decimals and acronyms and spinning and launching, making it a little less scary and giving you a new perspective with which to think and talk about our beloved sport.
First up: The first installment of a dive into baseball statistics.
———
It’s no surprise: baseball is numbers-heavy. Likely because it can be mostly described by discrete and well-defined events, baseball lends itself to digits upon digits upon digits. The spectrum of fan acceptance of this spans from those developing modern sabermetrics, to those who blame the Inevitable and Imminent Downfall of the Sport (100+ years and counting!) on anything outside of “traditional” stats. In-between you have everyone else: fans who don’t care either way; those who care a little either way; those who want to understand but find it all so damn intimidating; and even those who think they get it but carry major misconceptions (looking at you, r/baseball and your abuse of ‘regression’).
Well regardless of where you sit, Welcome to Stats Club! We’re gonna take a close look at the classes of baseball metrics, where they come from, and how to interpret them. Before we kick things off you should know of a few key rules:
The first rule of Stats Club is: Stats are not bad.
The second rule of Stats Club is: Stats are not bad!!
But seriously, statistics are tools. Saying a specific stat is fundamentally bad because it doesn’t tell you something it wasn’t designed for is like saying a screwdriver sucks because it can’t hammer nails. The formula is what it is: what’s potentially bad are the inferences you draw from it.
For example, suppose I make a measurement that is the total number of apples and oranges in my fruit basket: I call it 'wAO’. It’s very specific, sure, but it’s still carrying information. And although it only counts those two fruits directly, you may be able to infer what’s happening with the rest of my fruit supply if you know how much my basket can hold; e.g. a low wAO may mean I have bananas and kiwis too. But if you’re wrong, that’s not the fault of wAO. Rather, your methodology is flawed by not accounting for your own assumptions. Keep this in mind as we step through baseball statistics, especially when we get into sabermetrics.
A third thing to be aware of is: unless stated otherwise, baseball stats are not predictive. They are records of the past, and we assume things will stay mostly the same going forward. But this is an assumption, and depending on what we’re talking about it can be a pretty bold one.
Part I. The Counting Stats
<Hits, home runs, RBIs, strikeouts, innings pitched, etc…>
Ah, it’s the most basic category: the stuff you can literally count. Counting stats get scoffed at because of how simple they are, but they’re at the core of everything that follows. After all, you can’t build a model of player production without having raw data to throw into your equations.
As I mentioned earlier, baseball is a nice sport from a statistics perspective because it can be almost completely described by counting stats, which are descriptions of discrete events. A batter does or doesn’t reach base; a pitcher either gets a strikeout on 3-2 or he does not; and so on. Compare to, say, soccer, where it’s not so easy to cleanly describe and quantify the details of player performance.
I say almost completely described because fielding remains a challenge. Errors are an attempt, but errors are a divisive counting stat because they’re uncharacteristically subjective for baseball. Like with soccer where we’re trying to measure continuous and complicated events, advanced analytics are really the only way to quantify fielding in any detail. But we’ll save that discussion for a later post.
Part II. The Rate Stats
<Batting average (BA), On-base percentage (OBP), Slugging percentage (SLG), etc…>
Counting’s great, but raw numbers can get large and unwieldy and difficult to interpret. We solve this by normalizing them, i.e. dividing the count by some standard unit. Then we get a rate, or measure of how often something has occurred (remember: baseball stats are not inherently predictive). BA is the rate of hits per official at-bats; OBP is the rate of reaching base—hits and walks and hit-by-pitch—per plate appearance; and so on.
For pitchers, Earned Run Average (ERA) is earned runs per inning pitched times nine, which just scales the rate to an entire 9-inning game. There’s also Walks and Hits per Inning Pitched (WHIP) which says what it is right in the name. On baseball-reference you’ll find SO9 and HR9, which are strikeouts and homeruns per inning, respectively, also times nine for the same scaling as ERA (for whatever reason pitchers get their rates expressed as whole numbers while hitters are stuck with fractions).
Let’s illustrate the first two rules of Stats Club by looking at the much maligned BA. It’s perfectly reasonable to measure how often a batter reaches base via a hit. Hits are exciting! There’s a crack of the bat, the ball goes into play, and the fielders scamper to unsuccessfully throw the ball in before the batter-turned-runner can reach. Not to mention, making contact with a small 90mph projectile and placing it where it can’t be fielded may be the hardest thing to do in all of sports, so getting a hit is always an impressive feat.
But none of this is to say hits are the only things that matter. If you’re trying to get on base you don’t really care how you do it, and from that perspective a walk is just as beneficial as a single (even if Nick Johnson’s knowledge of the strike zone is slightly less dramatic than a clutch Gio Urshela double down the line). Thus the problem is not in BA being what it is, but rather in old-school baseball minds deciding it is the be-all, end-all of offensive measures. So definitely celebrate high batting averages, but don’t use it to definitively say one player is better than another. There are more appropriate tools for that.
Part IIa. OPS and Other Fun Rates
On-base Plus Slugging (OPS) is technically a rate, but it’s unique because it rather unceremoniously—but somehow very comfortably—smashes two other rates together: OBP, and the intimidatingly named SLUGGING PERCENTAGE (SLG), which is bases per at-bat.
The idea behind adding the two is straightforward. In baseball you want to generate runs. And you do this by either getting on base or by hitting the ball so you get a lot of bases. Hey, that’s OBP and SLG! So if we add the two together we get a number that kinda captures a player’s rate of run creation. Hence, OPS.
There was a time when I ignored the first two rules of Stats Club and hated this number. Since the same hit is captured in both OBP and SLG, isn’t it double counting? And wait a second, OBP and SLG have different denominators; you can’t just add them! But as I went through my career I realized I was overthinking it: OPS is fine. Between 9am and 5pm on weekdays I’d call OPS a basic heuristic. A heuristic is a broad concept: it refers to any good-effort way to get a solution or estimate to a problem. Heuristics are explicitly not meant to be optimal or perfect: they just need to be justified by the designer. And OPS can be justified! Aside from the conceptual idea of run creation, it can be shown that OPS tracks with—and even has some level of prediction for!—actual runs scored. So there you go.
But be aware that even given that, we’re still inferring things about run creation from OPS. Inferences still rely on assumptions and interpretations and there was a desire to get more precise. Stats guys wanted a more refined tool to directly measure production. One of these tools is called weighted on base average (wOBA), but we’ll discuss that later when we dive into advanced metrics.
Batting Average on Balls in Play (BABIP) is another fun one. BABIP also has its description in its name: it’s like BA, but instead of hits per at-bats, it’s hits per balls-in-play (i.e. it ignores strikeouts and HRs). BABIP is used to gauge the statistical un/likehood of a hitter’s performance. The logic is as follows:
Major league ballplayers have a baseline level of fielding skill. That is, there are zones in which any competent player should be able to field a ball and record an out. That means there are also zones where that fielder won’t be able to make a play, and thus the batter—if he places it there—will get a hit.
Given all that, we can expect a ball in play to be a hit about 30% of the time. If a hitter’s BABIP is far below .300, the implication is that fielders are making spectacular plays. And since spectacular plays are spectacular for a reason, the hitter is probably getting “unlucky”. Or perhaps he’s hitting into crazy shifts. Either way, a good hitter will adjust his approach and/or benefit from defenses being less spectacular. As a result, the expectation is that in due time he will see his BABIP regress upward towards .300. And if his BABIP goes up, so will his BA.
On the other hand, if a BABIP is far above .300, it implies the hitter is getting lots of bloop hits, which he certainly isn’t planning. Or maybe he’s beating defensive alignments, which any competent defense will recognize and adjust to. Whatever the reason, we’d expect his BABIP to regress down towards .300, accompanied by a drop in BA.
(BIG NOTE: Player skill is a factor here too! Elite hitters will be better at finding those gaps and can maintain a BABIP of around .350, while the worst hitters may sit as low as .260. If we know a player’s true BABIP after seasons of playing, we can have a good guess of how his BA may trend based on BABIP.)
For a while BABIP was THE indicator of statistical un/likelihood (or un/luckiness). This is why we curse the BABIP gods when one of our guys is “robbed” or when a team--probably the Rays or mid-aught Angels--bloops us to death. But thanks to Statcast, BABIP has been given a partner. Because Statcast logs everything about batted balls, we can, in real time, know exactly how often that type of contact (launch angle, exit velocity, etc.) has resulted in a hit vs. an out. No more inferences required! You know this stat as expected batting average (xBA). But more on that later.
Remember: Stats Are Not Bad. This is some cool synergy between classic rates and new-age Statcast. Use xBA for real-time analysis, but turn to BABIP when trying to project long-term trends.
Part IIb. Time to Normalize…Again!
Rate stats exist to make counting stats more readable, but it’s still not obvious what rate is a good rate. This is something you had to learn when you first got into baseball: you weren’t born with the knowledge that a .330 BA may win the batting title, or that a 5.36 ERA for a starter is disappointing. Rate stats are a useful tool but they don’t tell if a rate is what you want.
Enter the “pluses”, mainly OPS+ for hitters and ERA+ for pitchers. These are essentially the raw rates normalized by the league average rate, times 100 (so it’s not a fraction) with a few other adjustments. This gives a direct comparison to everyone else in the league over that period of time. If a pitcher has an ERA+ of 101 it means he’s in the middle of the pack, whereas an ERA+ of 205 means he’s 100% better than the league average pitcher. Similarly, an OPS+ of 90 says a hitter’s inferred run production is 10% worse than the rest of the league. The pluses are my favorite to look at because they’re nice clean numbers that quickly provide a lot of information.
Baseball-reference iterates on this with tOPS+ for player splits. This is the player’s OPS for that split, e.g. the month of April, normalized by his OPS for the entire year. This lets you quickly check out fluctuations over months, counts, and other situations.
Ok, two caveats here. First, the pluses are also adjusted by a “park factor”, which is a number that describes how pitcher- or hitter-friendly a stadium is. If two pitchers have the same ERA but one plays in an extreme hitters park, he will have a higher (i.e. better) ERA+ because the park factor adjustment accounts for how he has to work harder.
Secondly, because of how OPS+ is calculated—it actually sums what you could call OBP+ and SLG+—an OPS of 90 doesn’t exactly mean 10% worse than league average OPS. That’s why, in the example above, I said 10% worse run production instead. And now we’re bordering on more abstract concepts that may require additional tools to describe...
———
--And that is a good place to end today’s lesson. To recap: we started with counting to collect raw baseball data, and then we normalized those counts to get rates. To easily compare those rates we normalized again, but with a twist: to be a fair comparison we needed to adjust for the quirkiness of the various ballparks. And that’s not exactly something you can just count. You need a model, and more specifically, a model that checks out.
Furthermore, what about our sharper version of OPS? How do we more accurately and directly measure run production? And since errors are a weirdly subjective stat, and because hits themselves depend somewhat on defense, is there a way to meaningfully evaluate a pitcher’s performance while somehow ignoring hits and runs?
The search for answers to these questions gave rise to the advanced metrics, or “Sabermetics”. wOBA, FIP, WAR and others are newer heuristics that use the history of baseball stats to develop models of performance. Next time we’ll dissect a few of these to better understand what exactly they’re telling us.
— Extra Credit —
< A place for footnotes and other remarks for the nerdiest nerds >
Throughout all this I’m going to use the statistics meaning of regression, which means a trend. The concept of regression towards the mean refers to trending towards a true average. It does NOT mean “To arbitrarily get worse”! Baseball fans routinely mess this up and it leads to very bad analysis! Much more on that later.
Isolated Power (ISO) is a rate like SLG, but it only counts doubles, triples, and HRs and gives them weights of one, two, and three, respectively (It can also be calculated as SLG minus BA). As you can guess from its name and its components, it’s a heuristic used to capture power hitting.
Here’s a fun quirk. A player’s OBP is always higher than his BA, right? Not necessarily! Check it out:
Two players with identical BAs for this game but very different OBPs. What’s happening here? It’s the sac flies! Since SFs count as a plate appearance but obviously not as getting on base, they go into the denominator of OBP but not the numerator. So if a player has more SFs than BBs, it won’t affect his BA but it will bring down his OBP. Of course, no actual major league player should have more sac flies than walks over any meaningful period of time, so this is mostly an early season quirk.
