It's always interesting reading about the Latinate vs. Germanic "registers" in English where using Latinate words reads as more prestigious, especially when people invent examples of what could've been—using wordlore instead of linguistics, for example—because my instinct is that those examples would instead, if they were actually used, constitute the highest register of the language. The thing with these registers is not that Latin is somehow unique, but that more obscure words give the audience a greater sense of exclusivity—which can be achieved by using borrowings from a more prestigious language (whose prestige hinges on this exclusivity in the first place), but also by using obscure words that are native to the language!

I wonder how it works for other languages, because based on what I've seen, the tiers of erudition in slovene would be more like the following: • colloquial speech & jargon (often with borrowings from non-prestigious languages), • "proper" speech (with few(er) borrowings from non-prestigious languages), • "learned" speech (often with borrowings from prestigious languages / internationalisms), • "elevated" speech (with few(er) borrowings from prestigious languages / internationalisms, using instead more obscure native equivalents)

I can't really think of a direct kingly–royal–regal-type parallel, but I can try with something a bit less semantically specific:

the heart of the problem (Germanic)

the point / essence of the problem (French / French Latinate)

the crux of the problem (Latinate)

and their register-equivalents in Slovene would be:

jedro / bistvo problema (Slavic)

poanta / esenca problema (international)

srž problema (Slavic)

Another example of how these prestigious variants can (start to) form separate sociolects are the Croatian standard language (obscure native words are preferred) vs. the Serbian standard language (internationalisms are preferred)—not sure how it works within those though, nor how it is for Bosnian and Montenegrin ... It would also be interesting how it works for languages that shun internationalisms entirely (Icelandic, Lithuanian, ...)

I know this was ages ago, but I’m just so in love with your “pika poka” comic. You just don’t see reduplication like this in English, plus Slovene has such a nice rhythm to it! I have a quick question if that’s ok: in the last one (the last straw for Ladybug) what is the “moja”? Is it a separate word, or just another diminutive addition?

and "moja" just means "my"

There's really no way to translate what Chat calls Ladybug in that last panel but if I had to try I'd go with something like

"spotted little dot tiny ladybug my bugaboo-ling-ie-ling"
