Before streaming services, in-between satellite TV and DVDs, you had Game Boy Advance Video. Whenever you didn't feel like playing through Pokemon Emerald, you could watch some grainy, 30 FPS episodes of Dragon Ball GT on your favorite handheld console.

It was such an afterthought to Nickelodeon, that they overlooked a pretty big flub for a Spongebob Squarepants episode that was released.

Located on this Nicktoons compilation is an episode of Spongebob that has a "Smell-o-Vision" graphic from 1999 that wasn't edited out.

What the heck was Smell-o-Vision?

Smell-o-Vision was this funny promotion that Nickelodeon did with the help of Kraft foods. Kids would buy specially-marked boxes of Lunchables, Fruity Pebbles, ect and get a "Smell-o-Vision" card.

Then on selected dates, "Smell-o-Vision" episodes of Nicktoons would air. Whenever the nose and the number graphic popped up, you pulled the corresponding card, scratched and sniffed it. The corresponding numbers were important because there was good and bad smells. Wild Thornberries could be prompting you to smell wildflowers blowing in the breeze, but your card is a fart squeezed out by Stu Pickles during an episode of Rugrats.

This promotion came and went in a short time in 1999. Game Boy Advance Video came out in 2004. How did this mistake make it through? Surely Nickelodeon had a clean master copy of the "Squeaky Boots" episode to lend to Majesco. Laziness? Incompetence? Who knows. Regardless, it's at least funny.

Those posts that are like "think of the scent you associate with ur f/o" are wild to me bc I am so... not good at being imaginative. Unless a canon source says "they smell EXACTLY like x thing" I'm gonna have zilch. what am I supposed to do, think of one myself? like a smart person? UNFATHOMABLE what if im incorrect

I'm starting to think one reason (of many) you're such a good writer is you think in words instead of mental images. It could make it easier to express yourself in words to other people. When I write I have to try to fully express what's on in the three dimensional, surround sound smellovision cinema in my head, and I will never be able to do that.

I do wonder -- whether for good or ill it has definitely had an impact. (For new readers, I have aphantasia, the lack of a "mental eye" or inner visual world, which you can read more about in the "aphantasia fantasia" tag; it's disproportionately common to neurodiverse individuals, along with poor autobiographical memory). I don't know if it's better training for expression, because without knowing how words invoke mental images I don't really know how effective I'm being, but I think it does make for easier first drafts. And probably some of the popularity of my fanfic in specific is that it allows people to project a good deal onto the story/characters, because I tend to keep the visual details vague.

One of the longest-running complaints about my work is that it's much of a muchness, all my characterizations and stories are the same. While on the one hand that's obviously not a compliment, I think that is also attached to the fact that I'm not very visually specific, so not entirely my fault; if people are reading the same things into my work over and over it's probably because of a lack of imagination on their part as well. (I've tried to work on this as a skill, but I'm aware that haters gonna hate, so I don't take envy-driven criticism too much to heart anymore.) I think it's less homogeneity than it is simple vagueness.

But yeah also I would imagine if you're driven to give a very specific visual impression it would be SUPER frustrating if you feel like you can't, either because there aren't words or because you don't feel you have the skills yet. A lot of skill in writing is just practice, but "just practice" is a real minimizing phrase. I'm not someone who subscribes to the idea that talent doesn't matter, because I think it does; I think it's much easier to practice when you derive pleasure from the thing you're practicing, which I think is linked to talent.

Yeah, I dunno. Certainly it explains why most of my early adult writing was in theatre, where you're leaving a lot up to the designers and director in any case.

Rutherford & Fry did a podcast episode about aphantasia that I should probably get back to listening to, but I can't listen to much of it at once; some of it is the sense of being perceived, but some of it is also envy, because they talk to someone who has aphantasia but not ADHD and she's like "Yeah my mind is super quiet, it's nice" and I may not see images or hear noises in my head but still somehow manage a truly inconvenient level of chaos there. :D

spider dragon is The Baby of the extended family network of my postgame au, because . . . most of the people who were going to have kids did so in their late 20s/early 30s and not in their mid-50s(? who fucking knows how troll lifespans work point is vriska and terezi are gleeful old hags & loving it) which means she has a lot of older cousins and second cousins(? children of cousins) close enough in age for her to consider them cousins. unfortunately being surrounded by old people means she's a nerd from birth. and because she's a troll being raised by Literal Gods/Actual Alternian Trolls instead of a lusus like normal ppl, she's already somewhat isolated from other kids her age.

it turns out the reason no lusus would take her as a grub is that spider is a teal-cerulean cusper; a natural variation in troll genetics that only becomes a problem in cases where they're so smack in the middle of blood colors that no lusus of either caste will bond to them (or, worse, when a lusus of each caste bonds to a cusper---the two lusii will attempt a fight to the death on sight, which is obviously very upsetting for all parties involved). she doesn't have cerulean mind powers, nor does she have whatever psychic gift teals can develop (smellovision?). on alternia, she would have probably died or been culled for being a mutant, but on earth C she pretty much lives a normal life because 1) kanaya didn't know cuspers were a thing until spider dragon came along (& doesn't cull healthy grubs on principle) and 2) earth C does not have much stratification along the hemospectrum, if any.

spider only became aware of her cusper status as an adult. vriska and terezi were both like "huh, that explains a lot," and never brought it up again. spider also only became aware of how unusual vriska and terezi's relationship is as a teenager and young adult---it's almost like the serket-pyrope relationship is beyond quadrants compared to normal troll dating. very odd to find out that not only are your parents gay by human standards, but also by troll standards. as if uncle karkat hasn't been trying to explain that literally every time they get together. someone has to give this young troll a proper education of romance, discretely arranged in four non-overlapping emotional spheres. she probably still has some of the helpful charts he made for her tucked away somewhere.

anyway she is a private school kid because of course vriska's daughter is getting the 8est education money can buy, and of course terezi's daughter is going to an ivy league school with an excellent law program. never mind that she majors in history. it's fine. terezi's not disappointed at all that earth C's best mind just went into alternian studies instead of criminal law. it's. fine.
