It’s interesting to know what Sammon intended for the show, but tbh:
The big romance explanation is not very compelling an idea and not well aligned with the other themes around class disparity and accountability in the work
A lot of the stuff she is claiming as part of the resolution didn’t actually happen (I def missed the part of the show where the “relationship developed properly and gradually” or Great actually did any meaningful atonement)
The different “parallel universes” were never actually brought together and there is no clarity around their shared memories so there is no mutual relationship for them to build from
Not sure if this is just the best explanation she could offer for the result or if this really was her vision and the production just failed to get some of it across. Either way, it’s never good when you have to post an essay explaining your show because people are so confused about what you were trying to say.
I guess the most useful thing here is you can officially classify this as a bl, since apparently the romance was the point!

Euthanasia 2 [Novel Review]
Tumblr media
Title: Euthanasia 2
Author: Sammon
Genre: crime, thriller, mystery
Chapters: 26
Where to read: English translation available on MEB
Summary: Six months after closing the euthanasia case, Dr. Kantapat (Gunn) receives a letter from a mysterious person who identifies him as a white-robed reaper. Dr. Kantapat must find that person before Police Major Wasan, his lover, and everyone else found out the truth. Trying to keep secrets caused more damage than he could control, leading to the unexpected conclusion of the euthanasia case and the conclusion of the relationship between them.
Quick review: This was a rather short but perfect ending to GunnWasan story. The sequel novel directly addresses some of the questions and mysteries left at the ending of Book 1. There are parts in the middle of the novel where it felt like the author were sidetracking the main characters to develop the side couple who were introduced in Book 1. But I thoroughly enjoyed getting that proper resolution for Dr. Gunn and secrets. mildly detailed review with spoilers for Book 1 ending below ↓
So at the end of Book 1, we learned that Dr. Gunn assisted in the death of Wasan's mother who was a dying patient wanted to die painlessly. At first, Wasan had thought that his mom was among of the list of dying patients being killed, but then he found out that his mom was not in the list of victims of the serial killer. They're in a relationship by the end of Book 1 but it still felt as if there was a wall between them.
Book 2 did its job well in straightforwardly addressing these issues between Wasan and Gunn. I like that Book 2 dealt with the risks and consequences that Dr. Gunn has to face as someone who does perform euthanasia on his patients.
The author seems to have a very clear stance on the issue of euthanasia and I like that those principles were made very clear through point of view of Dr. Gunn.
The only thing I didn't like was the lack of Wasan in a few chapters in the middle of the novel because the author seemed to have been trying to develop Kong/Tum a bit more so Lieutenant Kong was doing more of the 'investigation' (hence more time/writing spent on Kong). There was a timeskip at the end of the novel but it didn't annoy me at all because it makes complete sense for certain major spoiler reasons.
Having finished Euthanasia 2, I can completely see Spare Me Your Mercy getting a second season if they follow the same trajectory of making SMYM based on Book 1. Because it really does feel like an incomplete story where the author had left readers at Book 1. Book 2 felt much more resoluted than Book 1 and it's definitely a satisfying ending for me.
In fact, I had been so ready for a bad/sad ending or an open ending or a cliffhanger ending but thank god sammon gave me that satisfying ending. like technically it is a 'happy' ending but it's not an unreleastic happy ever after ending. i like that the ending is very much grounded in reality (crossing my fingers that SMYM gets picked up for s2 even though s1 hasn't even aired yet).

btw just to contribute to the rumor mill since you're discussing it in my tags, i saw someone saying it felt as if one31 were holding "spare me your mercy" hostage so director wo had to finish century of love first for daouoffroad who are the rising branded pairing among one31 roster of artists (especially since they're the only? pairing left after jamfilm announced them taking a break to do other lakorns) 😭 he seems excited about smym judging from the way he's posting stills from every filming queue and praises about how all the actors' (even supporting ones) performance are stellar (┬┬﹏┬┬) like yea i'm still excited about smym but it sucks that rookie actors like daouoffroad might face even more pressure than experienced lakorn actors (though i do know tor/jj themselves had had their own fairshare of time working under similar kind of pressure with their p'yong 😅)
Hi Claire! 💜
Venting in your tags about it was a bit :/ of me and in hindsight I'm sorry about that. I didn't mean to guilt-trip you or ruin your fun with the show. Century of Love was amazing quality and I'm sure Spare Me Your Mercy will be stellar too. 🙏
But yeah, that's what I heard too and it does make sense. What doesn't make sense is for the director - a professional and someone to look up to and rely upon - to throw a tantrum and bully his cast about it. It's not Daou and Offroad's fault that he was given the carrot and stick treatment by the higher-ups. As a fellow creative he should know that not every job is a passion project but we still have to give it our best.
Ugh. I'm so tired of the whole asshole director/producer thing. I wish we (the industry and the audience) would stop excusing bad behaviour as long as the finished product is good and/or successful.
