Connecticut Half Time Snare Drum Solo by Jim Caron
This is a rendition of the Connecticut Half Time Snare Drum Solo, written around 1930. Military style, competitive drumming was obsolete by the 1980's, the old style replaced by modern drums with a different purpose. You can download a copy of the old time sheet music on my website: http://drumlessonsorangecountyca.com/...
I have chosen to play this with 5 stroke rolls instead of 7 stroke rolls which would start on the left hand, I like the sound, many drummers playing this will attempt to crush seven 32nd notes into  the space of five. When played correctly, the seven stroke roll is consistent with the musical notation and makes a more continuous sound than the 5 stroke roll.

Shotgun questions at the Europe Drum Show with Schneider 💞
youtube
Transcript-ish:
Interviewer: What do you prefer, wood or metal snare?
Schneider, sighing: I... Think I'm more a metal guy.
-
Interviewer: Who's your favorite groove drummer?
Schneider: Now, this is definitely Chad Smith.
-
Interviewer: What's your favorite odd time signature?
Schneider: Been doing this... Very rarely, a few times... But it could be a 5/4?
-
Interviewer: What is your go-to warmup rudiment?
Schneider: Six [?] rolls... Or and just... Single patterns... And, uh, rudiments like... Ja... Paradittles, and triplets, and whatever...
-
Interviewer: What would you do, if you would not be a drummer anymore?
Schneider: I would... be a stay-at-home dad, I guess, at the moment. Take care of my kids. [Laughs]
-
🥺 As much as I know nothing about drums... hearing him talk is always worth it. Excuse any mistakes in my transcribing, this is my first time trying out something like this... And my ears don't work too well after years of this guy's music on blast, lol

A rhythmic knock came at McNamara's door, more of a snare rudiment than anything you'd expect from a knock.
-🗣️ of @youngvoice-and-gameplayer
[After a short moment, he opened it. Expecting some weird arrangement of dead things at his door, which had (unfortunately) become the normal thing that came from the mysterious knocks at his home. how people knew his address so easily? who knows. It unnerved him nonetheless]

excerpt kinematics
The driving of the Track-Laying Train: Over a curb and a gutter, over some gravel and soil, right around a mailbox post, and transiting the outer edge of a wide cul-de-sac that stretches outward in a vacant black presence that looks like a salt flat made of total shadow. The Lord is dwarfing you, steam engine. The sun is photographing you: Into tomorrow, with its eclipse-shutter, day after night. The train can see the CloudReel through its seven telescopes, half a kilometer away. That big asphaltic cul-de-sac; expanding into field of vision at portside, at a taunting size. The Train lifts up a track behind and sets one down in front, it starts to rain a little on the rocks around: green bushes are written on with the lightest snare-like drops; because the rain is playing rudiments.

(there is a perpetual uneasiness in the state of being conscious)
I.
I am awake in the darkness,
afraid to die.
A helpless thing dissolving in the acid of time,
like every other helpless thing that dares to stick out its bony hands.
Whatever I look at,
whatever which angle I stand to contemplate it from
I cannot think of anything but sad things.
I just want to tear everything out.
I think I can just barely bear it only as long as nobody talks to me.
I am raw and bloody and bruised and sore
wherever anyone has even thought of laying hand of me
wherever the fabric has pressed with the slightest force
overwrought fibres hanging out like tattered cloth
vise-gripped into some inadvisable state of tightness and bentness
Ah yes,
something is taking its sweet time
taking ever such slight bites of me,
vestigal rudiments withered from disuse
The days pass through me and I cannot hold them
To be witnessed would be intolerable.
II.
I am a cluster of eyes, taking off its skin.
I am a vague outline of silhouette, a possibly seen shadow,
depositing a little something on the table.
I am the memory of a dancing drunken fairy
that ceases to make sense in the morning.
I’m that old lady that the physicians didn’t properly bother to revive.
I’m that forgettable office drone you assembled
using a cheaper than usual package of ACME robot emotions.
I’m that questionably designed doll that was found kind of creepy
even when it was new and sparkling,
when it hasn’t been any of those things in a long time.
I am the thousand hands pulling at red flesh so as to turn it into something not recognizable.
I am a family portrait of mushrooms, framed in a dramatic composition.
I am that thing in the living room chair
that can’t be bothered to stop burning.
I am those pitiful remains there hanging off
that alien flesh blob on the ceiling
where maybe a head once could have been, some while back.
I am the lurid zombie that grins back at you,
in some obscene state of undress,
maggot holes all bared,
asking audaciously of worms.
And I am that blasted monolith in the distance
that never ever seems to come the slightest bit closer,
no matter how many ardous days of journeys you waste towards it.
III.
The angels envy us.
The dead wish they were alive,
and the more time you spend talking to a doll,
the likelier that it is to be running away screaming
at the prospect that it might be turning into one of those very very real girls.
The only conclusion one can be possibly left with,
is that all states are intollerable, all ways of being.
Some way temporarily just have convinced themselves,
that this ardor is worth suffering,
and thece lies their vilest snare.
But I don’t think that anyone really believes it,
not while they’re not actively trying to convince themselves of such.
Even beauty surprises us, because it’s so unlikely to encounter any reprieve.
If it were the default case in any sense, why even feel more contentment
than in the intake of needed, but rather unexamined breath?
While you know that you live, you know you can die,
but without knowing, nothing leaves a mark on you.
So you’re free then to know, to notice
the animatronic plastic peeling off the clunky hydraulics in your hand.
The infected, reddish rim where the tube pokes right out of your flesh.
The mushroom-eaten, the dried up fleshbags,
the dim silhouettes and all the jellyfish that you dimly might have exhaled.
They stand there waiting in an afterworld you’ll have precious little say in.

hii sorry if it sounds weird but are you still drumming? if so do you have anything drum related you want to say ? :)
hi!! not weird at all! i am still drumming, and i assure you i'll never stop. it's not just a hobby, it's my pride and joy, my lifestyle. i moved to the city and am currently pursuing a music degree.
the drumming related thing: just do it. so many people always say "ooo that's so cool that you play drums i wish i played drums" DOOOO IIIIT. i know starting is scary, and can be expensive, but here are five relatively cheap things to help you get started.
● a standard classic, 5A drumsticks (i know, vater, controversial, i'm a vater guy what can i say): https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/VHP5AW--vater-american-hickory-drumsticks-power-5a-wood-tip
● an evans realfeel drum pad, closest drum pad to feeling like a snare that i've played (i linked the cheapest option, but there are larger ones and also double-sided ones): https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/RealFeel6--evans-6-inch-realfeel-mountable-pad
● Tommy Igoe's "Great Hands For A Lifetime" curriculum. This curriculum starts from the very beginning. It teaches you the basics of hand technique, then goes all the way up to advanced hand patterns. You can buy it online, it comes with the full book (pdf), a poster with his Lifetime Warmup on it (pdf), complementary videos that accompany the text, and mp3 files of Tommy Igoe taking you through three different iterations of the Lifetime Warmup (basic, intermediate, and advanced). i'm not sponsored i promise HAHAH, i just swear by this program. i've been studying it with my teacher for over a year now and my technique has improved so much.: https://hudsonmusic.com/product/great-hands-for-a-lifetime/
a book to help you begin reading music, even if you don't stick with drums, this book is the bible for every musician. Progressive Steps To Syncopation For The Modern Drummer by Ted Reed. it begins with simple rhythms and they get a bit more complex as the book progresses. nothing outside of 4/4.
here's the International Drum Rudiments as outlined by the Percussive Arts Society. the asterisks indicate the original 26 traditional rudiments. this website not only has a pdf, but also downloadable audio files of every rudiment so you can hear them and read them. it's all free!
all together, this stuff costs about $80. it's not super cheap but it's cheaper than a whole kit and private lessons. it is possible to at least start playing drums without spending over $100. DON'T WAIT!!! NOW IS THE TIME!!!!! you get out of it what you put into it. if you put your heart into it, you'll get everything you could want out of it.
cheers!

Drum Accessories That Elevate Your Sound Instantly
Drummers know that crafting the perfect sound isn’t just about the kit itself – it’s about the drum accessories that fine-tune performance, tone, and control. Whether you're a seasoned performer or a weekend hobbyist, the right accessories can dramatically enhance your playing experience. Here are some of the most impactful tools that can instantly upgrade your sound.
Tumblr media
1. Drum Dampeners and Muffling Gels
Overtones and ring can be challenging to control, especially in live settings or small recording spaces. Drum dampeners and muffling gels help minimize these unwanted frequencies, providing a tighter, punchier tone. They’re especially effective on snares and toms where control is key.
"I added gels to my toms and the improvement was immediate. My drums sounded studio-ready in minutes." — Martin G., gigging drummer
2. High-Quality Drumsticks and Brushes
The stick makes the sound. While that might sound overly simplistic, different wood types, tips, and weights drastically affect tone and dynamics. Consider having a variety of drumsticks and brushes for different musical settings. Jazz, rock, and orchestral pieces each benefit from tailored striking tools.
3. Drumheads with Defined Tuning Ranges
Modern drumheads are engineered for specific tunings and tonal ranges. Choosing heads that match your desired sound profile can instantly enhance resonance and clarity. Coated heads, for example, offer warmth and articulation, while clear heads provide brightness and attack.
4. Kick Drum Enhancers
From kick pads to beaters with varying materials, there are several drum accessories that improve low-end punch and beater response. Using a pillow or internal muffling system can also prevent the dreaded 'basketball bounce' sound.
5. Cymbal Felts, Sleeves, and Washers
Cymbals need stability and isolation to ring properly. Worn felts or missing sleeves can cause rattling and inconsistent sustain. Replacing these small parts ensures your cymbals perform their best, whether it’s a subtle ride pattern or a crash accent.
6. Metronomes and Practice Pads
Precision and timing are fundamental for any drummer. Digital metronomes and portable practice pads provide valuable tools for honing rhythm. Practicing rudiments on a high-rebound pad with a metronome is a tried-and-true method for skill improvement.
Where to Find These Drum Accessories
A wide range of these accessories can be found at a reputable online music store. Shopping online provides access to reviews, specifications, and sometimes user demos, helping drummers make informed decisions without stepping foot in a store.
"I discovered a new kind of beater at an online music store and it totally changed the feel of my double bass technique." — Leah T., metal drummer
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are all drum dampeners the same? A: No. Some are gel-based for reusable application, while others are ring-based or even built into drumheads. Choose based on your playing style and tonal preferences.
Q: Do I need different accessories for studio vs. live gigs? A: Often, yes. Live setups usually favor durability and projection, while studio sessions require more controlled sound, which may involve additional dampening or isolation.
Q: Can drum accessories wear out? A: Absolutely. Items like felts, beaters, and stick tips degrade over time and should be inspected regularly.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts
Upgrading your setup with thoughtful, high-impact drum accessories can do more for your sound than an entirely new kit. From better tone control to enhanced playability, these add-ons are essential tools in a drummer's arsenal. Whether sourced at a local shop or a trusted online music store, the right accessories can take your playing to the next level—instantly.

Essential Components for Your Drum Kit: What You Really Need to Get Started
Starting out on drums can feel overwhelming, with so many components and configurations available. Knowing what’s essential and what can wait will help you build a drum kit that’s versatile, durable, and perfect for honing your skills. Here’s a guide to the essential components for your drum kit you need to get started on the right beat.
1. **Drum Shells: The Core Pieces**
- **Bass Drum**: The heartbeat of any kit, the bass drum (or kick drum) provides the low, powerful pulse. A standard size for beginners is around 20-22 inches, which offers a balanced tone and works well across music genres.
- **Snare Drum**: Known for its crisp, sharp sound, the snare drum is essential for backbeats and accents. The standard size for beginners is 14 inches, delivering a full, snappy sound that complements any setup.
- **Toms**: Most starter kits include one or two toms—a mid-sized “rack tom” and a larger “floor tom.” These drums are crucial for fills and transitions. A 12-inch rack tom and a 14-16 inch floor tom offer a solid range of tonal variety.
2. **Cymbals: Defining Your Kit’s Sound**
- **Hi-Hats**: Typically 13-14 inches, hi-hats are essential for keeping rhythm, offering both “open” and “closed” sounds for dynamic playing.
- **Crash Cymbal**: This cymbal produces a loud, explosive sound for accents and emphasis. A 16-18 inch crash is ideal for beginners, providing a blend of sustain and volume.
- **Ride Cymbal**: Slightly larger, usually around 20 inches, the ride cymbal produces a more subtle “ping” and is perfect for continuous rhythm patterns. A good ride cymbal provides versatility, doubling as a crash for smaller setups.
3. **Drum Hardware: Essential Stands and Pedals**
- **Hi-Hat Stand**: Choose a sturdy, adjustable stand, as it holds both cymbals and takes a lot of footwork.
- **Kick Pedal**: An essential part of your bass drum setup, the kick pedal should feel smooth and responsive. For beginners, a single-chain drive pedal offers good value and durability.
- **Snare Stand**: Adjustable stands help position the snare comfortably. Look for one that’s lightweight but sturdy.
- **Cymbal Stands**: A crash stand and a boom stand for the ride cymbal will provide the necessary support while allowing flexible positioning.
4. **Drum Throne: Your Seat for Stability**
A stable, comfortable drum throne helps maintain good posture and balance. Look for a padded, height-adjustable throne, as this will allow you to find the perfect height for optimal control.
5. **Drumsticks and Practice Pad**
- **Drumsticks**: For beginners, a pair of 5A sticks strikes a good balance between weight and durability.
- **Practice Pad**: A drum pad is invaluable for silent practice and perfecting rudiments. Opt for one with a realistic rebound to simulate drum response.
6. **Drum Key and Accessories**
- **Drum Key**: Essential for tuning your drums, which impacts sound quality significantly. You’ll need this tool to adjust the tension rods on each drumhead.
- **Moongel or Dampening Pads**: These small adhesive pads help control overtones, making your kit sound cleaner and more controlled. Great for beginners working in small spaces or on recording setups.
Bonus: **Electronic Drum Kits – A Space-Saving Alternative**
If noise or space is an issue, an electronic drum kit is an alternative worth considering. Many beginner kits come with responsive pads, realistic sound libraries, and allow for quiet practice with headphones. While not a replacement for the feel of acoustic drums, they’re a practical option for those with limited practice spaces.
Conclusion
Equipped with these essentials, you’ll be ready to dive into drumming with confidence. Starting with a basic kit ensures you focus on the fundamentals, with room to expand as you grow. From a solid bass drum to versatile cymbals and durable hardware, each piece will play a role in helping you develop your technique, timing, and style. Happy drumming!

Ty Segall's Life Cycles
Tumblr media
(Drag City)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Throughout his career, prolific fuzz rock wunderkind Ty Segall has consistently revealed new combinations of sounds, and tricks. 2024 was no different. In January, with Three Bells, Segall combined the melodic psych folk of Sleeper with the glam funk sprawl of Manipulator and Freedom's Goblin. The album is a 15-song, song cycle, produced with Cooper Crain of Bitchin Bajas, that reads like a treatise on overcoming existential panic. In August, Segall released Love Rudiments, a not just fully instrumental but all drum album, inspired by the cycles of life and love. Both of these records contain moments of insularity and blasts of outward expression.
Even when Segall involves his band members, he's the true driving force behind the songs and their ability to bewilder you. Three Bells features collaborations with Denée Segall and Emmett Kelly, and occasionally, the rest of the Freedom Band. Of course they shine on a song like the thrilling "Move", which sports Denée's deadpanned, spoken vocals atop Segall and Kelly's dueling guitars and Charles Moothart's monstrous fills. But the album's highlights are directly representative of Segall's anxious inner monologue. Take "Void", where Segall's vocals lurk atop nervy acoustic guitars, as if to foreshadow the song's halfway about-face into a mopey, strummed tune with distorted guitars that almost sound like horns. "In here, I realize it's all fake, what I've seen outside," Segall sings, doubting his own past perceptions as you try to parse what you're hearing. "Eggman" plays like a sonic experiment, sounding slowed down before actually slowing down, its elements subsumed with noise as if the song is being boiled. "Your mouth's agape and caked with eggs," Segall deliberately sings, the rhyme scheme the only thing less expected than the song's aural turn. And at first, while a song like "Denée" seems like a showcase for the album's instrumental palate, Segall simply repeating his wife's first name and allowing the instruments to take shape, Ben Boye's spacey keyboard licks criss-cross with Kelly's bass and hand-clap percussion to create an odd time signature, making you forget how the song started in the first place.
If some songs on Three Bells represent Segall's efforts to capture the absurdity of the world, the more traditional and introverted tunes seem like a necessary contrast. "Out there, I'm too dizzy," Segall declares on "My Room". In other words, when he's inside, he can fool around, flip through his record collection, and craft songs. Three Bells gives you your quintessential T. Rex-indebted strut with "I Hear", drippy Goodbye Bread-era ditty with "Watcher", and Neil Young stomp with "Repetition". Segall's great ability to propel a song with acoustic guitar shines on "To You"; even the sweetly whirring breakdown fails to prevent the main melody from wriggling its way into your ear. "Just keep singing so we can dance forever," Segall requests, to others and himself, as if it's his mantra.

Well, except for the fact that Love Rudiments, on the other hand, has no singing and much less than normal you can dance to. Three of its four tracks are longform wanderings that, even upon entering a groove, take a left turn. "Getting Ready / Arrival / The Dance / Walk Home Pt. II / First Touch", beginning with trilling xylophone and panning snares, eventually makes its way into a 4/4 beat, with a forward march that could stand up to his excellent cover of Hot Chocolate's "Every 1's a Winner". Soon, though, its layered mallet instrumentation melts into something that sounds like rustling around a pile of silverware, and the song rolls to its end. The clacking boom bap of "Honeymoon / Life / Confrontation / Argument / Separation / Realization" also gives way to skittering drum rolls. Its ambient whooshing recalls the feeling you get from hearing Segall's trap kit playing on opening track "First Look / First Conversation / Walk Home Pt. I": that the songs are crumpling in on themselves. The titles on Love Rudiments suggest a love that starts and ends over decades, but as with any cycle, it's not linear time that's important as much as repetitions on a theme. Three Bells and Love Rudiments are Segall's attempts to find patterns in a senseless world.
