Daily fish fact #869
Longspine snipefish!

Adults tend to hover above the seafloor with their body pointed downwards, quickly sucking any small prey in the sand into their long snout! A very spread out species, longspine snipefish can be found in the tropical and subtropical parts of every ocean.

Longspine snipefish
Facts from Britannica: Snipefishes are often referred to as “bellows fish” because of their resemblance to a hand-driven bellows. Snipefishes possess an erect dorsal fin that contains several spines. The longest of these spines and the fish’s tail appear to form the “handles” of the bellows, whereas the fish’s tubular snout forms the “nozzle.”

20170131_F0001: Big fish, tiny mouth by Wei-Feng Xue Via Flickr: - These funny looking fish with mouth far smaller in proportion to their sizes are called snipefish. Maybe they inspired some funny looking aliens in Sci-fi film and tv.
