(article) ONEW Connection Tour Concert Review at Town Hall NYC | CCTV: The Nonstop POP Show

On April 24, 2025, Onew performed his first solo concert in New York City as part of his Connection Tour, taking over The Town Hall for a night that was pure, emotional, and unforgettable.

Unlike most K-Pop concerts, this was truly a one-man show. There were no dancers, no big screens, no band - just Onew, some dynamic lighting, and occasionally a chair or mic stand. And yet, he kept the entire audience completely engaged from start to finish. His distinct, warm vocal tone was in top form, filling the room with a richness and intimacy that made every song feel personal.

Shoutout to @NYCSHINee, who organized amazing fan events throughout the day and night. The fan energy was incredible, and it clearly touched Onew, who seemed genuinely surprised and moved by how well the audience knew his songs and how much love was in the room.

There was a truly touching moment midway through the show, when Onew mentioned that he had originally planned to perform "Starry Night" but wasn’t sure if fans would be able to sing along with him. The crowd responded with a beautiful a cappella version that clearly took Onew’s breath away - so much so that he promised to add it to future shows.During the encore, Onew made his way up to the balcony, personally handing out flowers to lucky fans - myself included!

Thanks to my concert buddy Jeff Benjamin, I also had the chance to meet Onew after the show. I told him how much his music and SHINee have meant to me over the years, and he seemed so happy and energized about this tour and all that’s ahead.

If there’s anything I'd wish for next time, it’s for Onew to bring a full live band—it would elevate an already incredible experience even further and really showcase his musicianship.

As a proud SHAWOL, I left Town Hall feeling overwhelmed with gratitude and excitement for what’s next for Onew and SHINee.

Middle of the week thoughts on media & entertainment highlights:

When I say I have a problem with remakes, I don't say it just to be against the grain. Not because I consider the original as automatically being better, but because often a new version fails to create its own standalone identity. And yes, we do not need another Carrie for many many reasons.

I watched The Apprentice yesterday. While it does have its flaws, considering that the number of decent movies coming out of Hollywood gets tinier anyway, this one was good and I do wish it had a bigger audience for it, despite the subject matter which seems to keep people away. It is an interesting look at the creation of a monster by the people surrounding him and the world which helped with that creation. And Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn was spectacular (and I want him on an awards season campaign tour).

I need a time machine to skip the entire Whicked promo period and its subsequent release. This is this year's most annoying production and everything that has come out of it or connected to it has been either incredibly stupid or ridiculous.

I think APT is gonna be stuck in people's heads for quite sometime. And no wonder, it is so catchy! I listened to all the BP girls solo releases and Rose's song stands out. Which is no wonder cause it has that second half of the 2000s sound to it, leaning much towards the Avril Lavigne style. And Bruno Mars who very rarely fails. Overall, good track. I liked Jennie's too, although it's not that remarkable and I wished her music video would have been more in line with the teaser aesthetic. More focus on the artistic side and less on the being hot surrounded by cars side cause we all know she's beautiful anyway. Do something beyond that.

There's plenty of films I'm excited to watch in a movie theater in the following months, but The Brutalist is on top of the list. I've just seen the trailer and I'm in awe, especially considering the low budget, the filming conditions, the choice to shoot everything on 70 mm...

Seeing in real time and happening so fast the consequences of validating the requests of crazy fans is insane and something needs to change asap. The funeral wreaths need to stop. For the RIIZE guy, for Suga, for Onew (I'm hoping they won't go there). The death threats for Jessi need to stop. Enough with harrassment campaigns against people who smoke, date, use their phone or simply behave like human beings.

hello back to losing my mind at the actual show once again!!! actually, comedy tragedy makes me go insane at all times now because of the element of the puppeteering!!

it way stronger visually or at least more distinct in the 2009 version, i am just... obsessed with the acting choices here, the way he cannot control himself and they control all of his movments?? its soo nerativly fasinating!!

he is like, running around, being told what to do, which is an extenion of this stage in his life he was littiraly forced into. as a servent, he must do what his sultan asks, he must only do what others tell him

he must only move at other's call, and here its represented by the clowns he sees them as, as well as the clown he made himself into by going so low, littiraly being flung to the floor by the crushing rule of the "better then him", and the crushing realization that that is where he feels like he should be (onew of many examples)

RISING FROM THE DEAD TO SAY I SAW ONEWE LAST NIGHT AND OHHH MY GOODDDDDDDDD THEY WERE SO FUCKING AWESOME AND COOL IRL I WAS STRAIGHT GEEKING

I haven’t quite kept up with them lately so I didn’t know some of the songs (by title at least)but my god, this concert fr dragged me back in by my scalp.

Yonghoon was so funny and engaging with the audience a lot. He was so sweet and a little sassy lmao, every time the audience cheered for a little too long he’d say “calm down calm down” or “I’m talking!!” He took phones during some songs to record up close and ugugughhhhh so cool.

Dongmyeong is SOOOO BEAUTIFUL IRL LIKE MY GOD?? I was taken aback by how ethereal he looks like pictures do NOT do him justice. He was also super engaged with the audience and also so charismatic and energetic. He talked the most (besides YH) and was just so cute. Someone asked his fav Disney character and he said Rapunzel and Stich

Kanghyun was just so effortlessly cool like his fucking guitar solos????? JEZUS CHROIST!!!!! He also talked here and there but not as much as DM or YH. When they were doing their intros, the first thing he said was how he has a pimple 💀 but you really could not see unless you were up close lmao. But he was UGHHHH

Giuk!!! Def more on the quiet side, also super chill and cool but he was smiling a lot and moving around on stage! He’d interact more during talking segments but just by waving and such. He is so cutie oh my god. When I did my selfie with him I complimented his tattoos and he got so happy 😭 and said thank you!!!

HARIN!!! MY BABY!!! MY BIAAASSS!!!!! Mf took his shirt off and showed off his MUSCLES!! When he did his intro. He kept his answers short and to the point when answering questions haha, but he was so fucking amazing on the drums. It was a little difficult to see him since I’m on the shorter side and he wasn’t on a raised platform so all I could really get was his head. YH pointed out that him and an audience member both had red hair and said they’re dating 💀 but he was so cool and I got to take two photos with him (we did a hand heart and touched palms together, I wanted to hold hands but I chickened out last minute LMFAO). He, Giuk and KH are so soft spoken and 🥺🥺AAGRGHHH

Overall it was such a beautiful and amazing concert, the renditions they did for certain songs were so????? AARGGHH!!!!!! They did a rock version of Closer and holy fucking shit it was AMAZING

DM said they’re gonna have diff setlists for each tour so!!

But overall 9/10 concert!! I wish I had the courage to talk to them just a little bit more. During the hi touch I told them all thank you for coming and thank you after our selfies 🥺❣️

Drum Beat

Straight off, great choice for title track, it's such a catchy, feel good song that sets up the pace for the rest of the album.

Onew's rapping is so good in this, it suits the song perfectly a highlight on a song full of great moments.

I love the outro, that kinda talky bit at the end sounds so nice I don't even know why but hm, hits just right.

I wish it was longer, I could listen to a five minute version of it, but I will have to settle for looping it ┐⁠(⁠￣⁠ヘ⁠￣⁠)⁠┌

Hola!

The vocal melody in the beginning of the verses reminds me a lot of latin american pop from the 70s and 80s. It's such a strange thing to me because the song instrumental itself (sans the percusion) is very different, taking sounds more specific to bosa nova, at least that is what it sounds like to me, I had not heard that combination before and gives me a strange sense of familiarity and nostalgia (at this point I was interrupted by Onew's live lol)

Made me wonder if the latin influence is on purpose, since the title is hola, if so 10/10 executed perfectly. Why haven't i heard any latin american artists do something like this?(if anyone has any recs for something that has this same kind of sound, in any language, but specially spanish please let me know)

Maestro

Contender for favorite on the album from the first listen, the bass line, the syncopation and how spacious? the chorus sounds. Floaty, idk you get what I'm saying?

The robotic voice too just fits the mood, the entire song is full of so many textures and layers, pulling forward and falling back, it's so engaging.

It reminds me a little of MGMT's Little Dark Age, but with the added charm of melodic breaks that are more grounded.

To say that I love it is just not enough.

Shape of My Heart

There is this sound in the background, that sounds to me like someone is carving/shaving ice? or perhaps sharpening a blade, i need lyrics for this one haha.

Either way the piano chords sound kinda out of tune at times, like a really old piano; or perhaps it's like a distortion —like the piano is coming in and out of focus, some chords are rattly, out of tune. This song has a lot of interesting stuff going on in the background.

The outro though, it feels like suddenly everything is finally sorted out, every element fits together by the end, the vocal melody, the chords on the piano stop sounding distorted, and it all sounds melodic and sweet. Also those backing harmonies to boost that feeling of order and peace, where before everything was extremely chaotic, going in and out of focus.

It sounds like resolution, i really need the lyrics for this one. I looped it a lot just to get this down, it's such an interesting sounding song.

Now I've been listening to this one quite a lot since it came out, and it still is such a feel good kinda song, which seems to be a thread through this whole album, it's so catchy no wonder he picked it for a pre-release.

It showcases his vocals beautifully, what else can I say?

Focus

The synths, the dramatic rests, come on.

I think Shape of My Heart took most of my brain power cause I'm struggling to come up with more than that, but it's a great song, great closer.

The instrumentals in the whole album compliment his voice perfectly, I can't imagine how hard it was to pick the title, half the songs in the album could be strong contenders for title.

I do wish the songs were a bit longer though, but that is just a teeny tiny thing, really.

I keep thinking about it and there is a lot of joy in this album, idk why i got that impression, because it's not like all the songs are happy, maybe it's just Beat Drum, All Day, and Hola!.

I love it so much.

It is just as 'Onew like' as Circle, even though it is so different.

I hadn't really realized how much I had missed him during this hiatus, and it seems to have hit me all at once now. I'm so happy that he is back and maybe that plays a role on it too.

It does seem like the ten months of rest did wonders for him and I can feel a huge amount of joy in the music. He seems to be really happy to be back making music again, and it shows in every second of this album.

He really seems to know how to express himself through music, and it's just wonderful to be here to witness it💖
