#so many shounens end so badly man
hamliet · 2 months
Note
what can I say about this ending is that after so many shounen ending badly I did expect Hori to follow since the third act of the manga, after the war and with Star and Stripe and Deku becoming a "vigilante" without trying to understand anything
It hurts? A little, because I still hoped for it to do what the premise seemed to be: saving the villains (with them being Alive)
Even Nana said to almight that truly saving someone was tha, body and soul.
But I digress, this ending was something, but I adtmit I didn't invest too much because I remember how hurt I was after TG ending, sooo... yeah
I agree completely on your last post, on the cowardice of this ending and I don't fault Hori 100% because of his overworking and him being done, but... aaaaaah, he could've done better
Sad but what can you do about it? I hope i'll get to cherish the good later on (Touya, I'll always love you) but idk it's always a roulette because the ending of something matters so much to me and it can ruin all the rest
Thank you for all of your analysis and kindness and I was at leat happy to follow you in another fandom journey ♡
I hope you're having a good day or night ♡
<3 Thank you! I think you expressed a lot of my opinions too. I think I am less hurt by this than TG because I saw the writing on the wall, but I'm still disappointed.
I do think it is funny how Horikoshi tried to a bittersweet nostalgia whiff by slapping force ghost Shigaraki into the final panels, but the ending reminds me in terms of thematic mess and "written for your detractors" so much of The Rise of Skywalker, so I guess it was fitting but not in the way intended. I don't say that to mock him either, but to say that I think he checked out. The man needs a mojito.

writing anything about vagabond is genuinely so insanely tough because, vagabond is just so intimate with its character writing. more so, just the general handling of the whole story. each and every chapter is hand crafted with a care inoue adds in every brush stroke or text bubble. its simple yet intricate, every illustration⸺changing and shifting with the washing tides of vagabond's storyline. the art style is unmatchable, the arcs, beautifully gory just as they need to be. the ripple of a lake, the slash of the blade, a rare smile amongst the lonely woods. vagabond can be small and intimate, then explosive and physical. a blade can be something to admire, to compare to the mastery of a samurai⸺then stripped to an item to kill. vagabond is so simple, the chapters in the life of a man and the fight against death. there's something so supernatural the way musashi has avoided death for years, but each and every piece to his survival falls in so right. to become invincible under the sun, a statement that twists and turns as musashi evolves. it holds weight, but by the end it's simply a wish of a much more younger man. things change, and change, then comes the spell of regret. but the morning sun comes up and the world will never wait, so comes dawn on kokura.
vagabond is filled with spiritual themes and intense writing that is new as it is antique. inoue knows how to use his art to improve every plot point and he knows how to write a story as impactful as his art. it's no wonder vagabond has been on hiatus for nearly a decade. this tale of the samurai musashi miyamoto is dear, beautiful, intimate, thoughtful, deadly, visceral, but most importantly, breathtaking.
when writing my thoughts down about a series, i look at the media and take a grasp at the things it tries to say, to communicate, maybe. i take my soul and ask it what has this done? and how badly has it ruined me? but when writing about vagabond, i simply can't begin to start about the beauty in this story and how much it has left me with. when i try to recollect the chronicles of this lone ronin from miyamoto village, i get lost in thoughts and pieces of it that i can barely connect. i lose so easily to this legend, from a long far off land, many, many moons ago. every arc, chapter, and even page, holds more things to unpack and rethink. it's so hard to understand in full the epic that is vagabond, to make sense of the winding brush strokes that inoue places⸺as messy as the life of these dear children of twenty-eight years old. when shounen mainstays like jjk or kny have a collection of themes you can pick apart and savor, vagabond has a ballad unreadable but ever so beautiful. how i want to understand it.

quickfire thoughts on fall 2023 now that everything i'm watching has had at least three eps out
EXCELLENT
sousou no frieren: still very easily anime of the season, beautiful in visuals and in story. a quiet, subtle look at loss and grief, and life continuing beyond that. the structure is working perfectly imo, it never feels like there are too many or not enough flashbacks, i feel connected at all times to both the present day party and the himmel-era party
migi to dali: still doing an exceptional job of balancing creepy and funny, i said before that the only thing i can think of with a remotely similar vibe is the movie hot fuzz and while i think there's a different flavor of comedy here, i still stand by that (and that's a compliment bc hot fuzz is an excellent movie)
kamonohashi ron no kindan suiri: although i wouldn't say this is mind-blowingly outstanding in any single way, it's very well-done in just about every conceivable way and comes together as an extremely solid series
BORDERLINE EXCELLENT
overtake: after four episodes i'm so tempted to put it with the 'excellent' shows but have to admit it's just not objectively on that level, it is subjectively one of my current favorites of the season though. silly at times, fairly simple story, but really effectively done so far
ADORABLE
s rank musume: feel like this one is largely going to slip through the cracks because it looks like your typical fantasy-action/adventure series, but doesn't stand out in that genre. the cute/soothing family moments are what stand out to me, but understandably that's not what most viewers of the genre are looking for. remains to be seen if a more action-y plot will build up, have doubts about how effective that will be
yuzuki-san chi no yon kyoudai: VERY CUTE with some very real moments and struggles, the cr subs debacle in the first ep however did it no favors
atarashii joushi wa dotennen: VERY CUTE i almost wish they'd cast literally anyone except umechan for shirosaki bc with him the similarities to cool doji danshi are just too much lmao however umechan is in fact perfect for this character so why not let him play it twice i guess
hoshikuzu telepath: moe yuri that isn't afraid to say rocket science is for autistic lesbians, what could be better?
wataoshi: YURI OF THE SEASON SORRY HOSHIKUZU TELEPATH HERE'S SOMETHING THAT COULD BE BETTER i actually would put these two on a similar tier but wataoshi gets the edge for me because rae is so unapologetically, exuberantly gay and that is just so nice to see
SEQUELS
houkago shounen hanako-kun: tragically only four half-length episodes but it's nice to see these kids again, ogata megumi's hanako voice just hits in a way the jjk yuuta voice doesn't, for me, so very glad to hear it again
arknights s2: i'm liking the art even more than i did in s1? not sure if it's actually changed/improved, and imo s1 was already good, but anyway just really enjoying seeing all the faves moving and speaking!
spy x family s2: still cute of course what more can i say
b-project s3: MAN I'M TORN i don't dislike this season (we are getting so many kitakore shots) but i am so stressed out for tsubasa and i just want to see her catch a break! i'm sure the season will end in an uplifting way, but all the stress she's under right now makes me want to punch things
dead mount death play s2: it was good and is somehow still getting better, s2e3 which just came out is one of the best yet imo
GOOD FOR THE ACTION BUT NOT TERRIBLY MUCH ELSE
undead unluck: i kind of... don't like anyone here lmao but the over-the-top, high-octane action is not badly animated, it's just not gripping me on any level beyond that. it does however have the op of the season
ragna crimson: again it's failing to get me really invested in the story/characters but the action is not bad i guess, cast for this one is absurdly stacked so i'm not going anywhere
shangri-la frontier: this one's doing a GREAT job with its pacing and action imo, it's introducing the game mechanics in a way that doesn't feel too fast or too slow. only issue is there really... doesn't seem to be any stakes? like at all? which is not a problem for me personally, it just feels a bit like we're waiting for another shoe to drop
WATCHABLE BUT...
bullbuster: i'm kind of vibing with this after three episodes but i really can't imagine it finding an audience, it's not mech enough to really appeal to mech fans and it's not... typical office drama enough to appeal to typical office fans. it's a strange little combo that just happens to work for me, personally
NOT GOOD BUT I LOVE IT
kawagoe boys sing: this is a ridiculous series, i would say not as wild as number24 but kind of getting there. like number24 but more vanilla, less homoerotic. i loved number24 and I'M LOVING THIS TOO there are some genuinely interesting characters already and though i still currently want to punt kick that teacher into the sun i remain cautiously optimistic that he'll see some character development. at some point. maybe
NOT GOOD. JUST NOT GOOD. SORRY.
bokura no ameiro protocol: really feels like some late-2000s/early-2010s male wish fulfillment dramedy. lots of weird and unnecessary het nonsense going on. honestly would consider dropping if it were 24 episodes but since it's only 12 i guess i'll stick it out. for kimuryo. who is unfortunately playing such a rancid character

fate zero sucks
Fate/Zero is a gateway anime of the worst kind. It's a bad series, a clusterfuck of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive edgy bullshit and DARKNESS. The normal moron can see this as the shit it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the series itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad.
this is the worst emo edgy bullshit i`ve ever saw in my whole fucking life this is fucking depressing and edgy also everything urobuchi writes are some edgy pretentious pile of horseshit pretentious that makes some fuckers think they are smart and mature for watching and reading his edgy and pretentious garbage like fate zero which is a pile of edgy shit and saya no uta which also edgy garbage some losers think urobuchi stories are deep and mature but in reality his stories are just some edgy and pretentious pile of fucking shit the characters are shit and fucking emo saber backstory in zero and stay night are most edgy depressing emo bullshit her self-hate makes me wanna punch the fucking screen i prefer saber in ubw and other fate spinoffs lancer backstory edgy bullshit and emo nuff said kiritsugu jesus christ he is the worst fucking character his backstory is the most fucking depressing emo pile of shit i`ve ever seen in my fucking life this character is the most edgy pile of shit and this backstory is fucking dogshit and He has absolutely NO redeeming qualities to speak of. A man who is willing to betray his own family (I'll leave it at that as to not spoil anything) solely for his own personal gain. There is literally no reason to root for him, and honestly if I had cared about any of the other characters, I would've rooted against him.
Why did he kill HIS FOSTER MOM and why did he kill his father without thinking twice? I don't believe it can be settled with "you're the only guy who can do this because you can", it makes no fucking sense whatsoever, he isn't human, the characters aren't human, just a massive cluster of edgy shit with somewhat.
and the Edgelord levels. The way that some characters suffer before they die are unjustified and it's only a resource to get audience's attention. Also there are filler episodes in order to show this suffering, in other words, more edgelord shit. The philosophy of the show. Is simple, retarded and childish at the same time (in the context of the show): If you kill, you are a bad person. So if I kill someone with the same attitude as Hitler, I am automatically a bad person no matter how many lives I have saved by doing that.
the ending is fucking shit its the most edgy fucking pile of shit.
only the good characters were waver and rider.
look i like games like manhunt, manhunt is dark but not edgy emo or depressing the game is violent and gory but not edgy emo or depressing but this anime is just edgy depressing fucking emo, I fail to understand why people praise this literal piece of shit, because I can't define it with anything else but shit, when it's but a generic, boring, cringey and nonsenical shows for edgy kids.
nobody wanna feel misery like this urobuchi motherfucker And after having watched this I saw juvenile shounen-like Fate/Stay Night anime series from 2006. It's almost beyond my belief that people (as of late 2023) rate Fate/Zero so well and F/SN so badly. Yes, 2006 anime is cliched. Its stereotypical high-school protagonist is shit too much. There is a generic romance plot. Hell, the whole coming-of-mage plot is ultra generic. And yes, it's more light-hearted. But still I liked it more, even though I was spoiled by prequel. The creators of Fate Zero failed to notice that it's not enough to be "darker and edgier" to have a good plot and interesting characters. The art part of the anime is only thing in which creators didn't fail. But it annoys me that.
overall fate zero is just an edgy pile of fucking horseshit is one of the most shitty edgy emo depressing garbage i`ve ever seen this pile of shit is just some overrated edgy emo garbage The only enjoyment I ever had from this show was the fact that it was over. I felt like if I had been freed from a cage I was forced to stay in for several days, do you know that feeling? I guess you do. and that i why prefer the fate spinoffs like fate extra fate extella fate prisma illya fate apocrypha and fate grand order, because they are much more light-hearted and better than this pile of edgy emo shit zero and edgy survivor guilt bullshit fate stay night ubw and hf i don`t give a flying fuck if you downvote this, this is only my fucking opinion

BnHA Chapter 305: Worst Intervention Ever
Previously on BnHA: Shinomori, whose name took me an entire week to memorize, was all, “nice to meet you Deku, I’m ten feet tall, do you want to know how I died?” and without waiting for an answer explained that he kicked it from old age at forty thanks to good ol’ OFA. Deku was all “wait a minute, then how come All Might, who’s fifty-five and is definitely dyeing his gray hair, is still alive?” First and Shino were all, “we really have no fucking clue but we think it’s cuz he’s quirkless, JUST LIKE YOU!” So basically, since quirkless people don’t exactly grow on trees these days, Deku is probably going to be the last user of OFA. The chapter ended with Nana being all, “psst, Deku, about my grandson. Uh, can you kill him?” which is sure to lead to a very interesting conversation this week.
Today on BnHA: Nana And The Gang are all “so, Deku, how can we put this delicately. The thing is, we’re pretty sure that AFO really fucked my grandson up, so on the off chance you can’t save him, how would you feel about, you know... [throat slitting gesture].” Deku is all “idk you guys, I kinda feel like he’s really just a traumatized child at heart and he’s in a lot of pain and stuff and so I should try to help him.” The Vestiges are all “BUT WHAT IF YOU CAN’T” and Deku is all “BUT I WANT TO TRY, DAMMIT” and the Vestiges are all “well when you put it that way, we, uh, were just testing you, so congrats, you passed!” The chapter ends with First being all, “ANYWAY SO WHY DON’T YOU TWO SHY BOYS STANDING OVER THERE IN THE SHADOWS COME SAY HELLO” before we CUT AWAY FOR ANOTHER WEEK, goddammit.
seriously, Nana
Tumblr media
just... have you met Deku?? look, if you really want Tomura dead, just sic him on the U.A. first years and tell Shouto and Honenuki that it’s a training exercise
oh my god lmao
Tumblr media
we’re too far away to see Nana’s face here so I will just assume that she turned and is staring DIRECTLY INTO THE CAMERA for this one line lmao. “I just wanted to clarify in case anyone felt inclined to take my dialogue out of context and spend an entire week complaining about it”
oh my god?! are you all purposely trying to make me sad??
Tumblr media
someone stop me before I launch into an impromptu rant about all my Tomura feels. WHY IS NOBODY STOPPING ME. oh my god but yes, exactly. he’s just in pain all the time. this is exactly why I think Tomura has such high redemption potential even though so far he seems to lack so many of the redemption arc essentials such as feeling remorse, wanting to change, and taking responsibility for his actions. the reason why I’m willing to overlook all that in his case is because Tomura has essentially had zero agency his entire life. AFO molded him into a killer by making sure he was in constant mental agony, and making it so that the only thing that even slightly relieved that agony was killing peeps. like, please don’t think I’m making excuses for him or anything, but if you take a child and manipulate their existence to make it virtually impossible for that child to grow up as anything other than a killer, and basically never give him the chance to be anything else, then no shit he’s gonna be a killer?? he’s basically never had the choice not to be. it’s never been an option for him. anyways I feel like I am EXPLAINING MYSELF SO BADLY but nonetheless I am prepared to die on this hill
anyway so now Nana is all “that’s a rhetorical question btw because Our Hearts And Minds Are One so we can feel everything you feel bro.” so yeah, that’s interesting
now Banjou is getting started on the “let’s try and talk Deku out of wanting to save Tomura because it’s insane” part of their OFA Mystical Space Void Reunion agenda
Tumblr media
look, Banjou, I feel you, I really do. you guys don’t think it’s realistic that Deku can defeat Tomura without killing him. so if it’s a choice between killing Tomura vs letting Deku and everyone else in the entire world die, then duh, you think Deku should kill him. I get it! and if this were a real life mass murderer I’d totally agree with you. but the problem is that this isn’t real life, this is a sympathetic shounen villain with a tragic past who might as well have FUTURE REDEMPTION ARC RECEIPIENT stamped on his forehead at this point
so First is all “look, there’s absolutely no doubt my brother has fucked this kid up good and proper by now”, which, again, fair
Tumblr media
though, that’s kind of exactly my point though. everything that Tomura is, everything he’s done, he’s done because of AFO. AFO has so effectively shaped his personality and his worldview by this point that it’s all but impossible to penetrate that. he’s AFO’s puppet. but the problem is that rather than treating him like a victim, you all are treating him like a casualty. like he’s already a lost cause. but good luck trying to convince Deku of that
WHOA WHAT, RANDOM SUPER-IMPORTANT AND BIZARRELY UNRELATED EXPOSITION DROPPED IN JUST LIKE THAT??
Tumblr media
way to still not reveal Sixth’s name, btw. THE PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW, DAMMIT. but also so this confirms something we basically already knew already, which is that not even AFO can steal OFA. it literally can’t be taken away by anyone unless the owner wills it. SO SUCK ON THAT AFO YOU EGG
(ETA: so I have no idea why this was omitted from this translation, but apparently the Sixth’s name was revealed as “En”, which is obviously not his full name but at least it’s something. also he most likely has a fire or smoke-related quirk based on the kanji used, 煙.)
so Banjou is saying that Deku’s “lack of an iron will” could be a disadvantage against AFO. hahaha what?? Midoriya “I’ll break all of my bones without blinking an eye just to protect someone” Izuku lacks an iron will? do tell
he says this is going to be a test of Deku’s determination. well yeah, no shit. but just not in the way you guys think
OH HELLO AGAIN
Tumblr media
darker hair again here! but I don’t trust the contrast in these scans at all after last week. his coveralls are way darker than they looked before too, and you can clearly see he’s standing in the shadows now
(ETA: yep, once again the raw shows that his hair is considerably lighter than what’s shown in these scans here. although there’s no mistaking now that his hair is consistently being colored in this slightly darker shade, and it’s not just the lighting.)
anyways lol First was saying something about how AFO can’t steal OFA, and they’ve spent all this time cultivating it as the ultimate weapon against AFO, and blah blah blah. go on then, keep lecturing
NANA GODDAMMIT NONE OF THIS IS YOUR FAULT
Tumblr media
girl what?? you did everything in your power to protect your family, and AFO, fucked up man that he is, targeted them anyway. there is one person and one person only to blame for what’s happened to Tomura, and that potato-faced asshole needs a good kick in the balls
NANA GODDAMMIT DON’T MAKE ME COME OVER THERE
Tumblr media
SO HELP ME GOD!! I WILL GIVE YOU THE BIGGEST HUG YOU’VE EVER HAD!! THAT IS A THREAT
so now Nana is all “I’m just going to call my grandson a Thing to ensure that fandom has only the freshest, grass-fed no-hormones-added discourse this week”
Tumblr media
I don’t even need to drop into the tags to know exactly which specific people are going to respond to this, and what kind of posts they are going to write lmao. everyone’s all caught up in the “that thing”, and meanwhile I’m over here completely hung up on this “nay” that’s appeared out of NOWHERE you guys. look at that. she really said “NAY”
Nana, my love, my dearest, I feel you girl I really do. but he’s not an unforgivable manifestation of pure evil, Deku is exactly right actually, he’s a boy in pain. you guys need to stop questioning Deku’s shounen protagonist instincts here and just let him work his sparkly magic. “let’s try and convince Midoriya Fucking Izuku that he can’t save someone” is a plan that is NEVER going to turn out well you guys
“DEKU GODDAMMIT WHAT IF WE CAN’T SAVE HIM” lmao it’s like an intervention
Tumblr media
“DAMMIT DEKU JUST ADMIT YOU HAVE A SAVING PEOPLE PROBLEM!”
RED ALERT IT’S ANOTHER CLOSE-UP OF THE BACK OF MISTER TWO BON CLAY’S HEAD OMG
Tumblr media
(ETA: I was too distracted with freaking out about Two and Three to really appreciate how ridiculously handsome First looks in this panel. but on my second readthrough it stood out so much that I had to go back and add an extra bullet point just to talk about how hot he is. look at him. wtf.)
THAT IS DEFINITELY AN UNDERCUT. THE PLOT THICKENSSSS. also those are fucking exhaust vents on Mister Three’s neck. MISTER THREE COULD YOU POSSIBLY BE RELATED TO THE IIDAS, PLEASE TELL ME YOUR SECRETS I’M DYING OVER HERE
so now Deku is launching into what will undoubtedly be a “saving people problems require SAVING PEOPLE SOLUTIONS” heroic counter-speech!
Tumblr media
I mean, they can already feel the “lol nah I’m gonna try and save him” feelings running through him lol. ~OuR hEaRtS aNd MiNdS aRe CoNnEcTeD~ and all that. this is just a formality, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love a good shounen protag speech
oh wait hold up, do you mean to tell me that the whole “hearts and minds are connected” thing I was just mocking just a paragraph ago actually allowed Deku to feel what Tomura was feeling?? like literally feel it??
Tumblr media
YET AGAIN these Tomura feels are pounding on my front door you guys?? they just will not quit?? people my house is already full of feels, does it look like I need you to sell me any more of them?? -- what do you mean, they’re free??
AW YISS THAT’S IT DEKU. THAT’S SOME GOOD SPEECH RIGHT THERE
Tumblr media
I appreciate the contrast here between the Douchebag Triumvirate of Overhaul, Muscular, and Stain versus the Misguided Twosome of Gentle and La Brava. never let it be said that Deku doesn’t know the difference between a redeemable villain and an unredeemable one
OH NO -- OH MY GOD
Tumblr media
someone please help me I need directions to the OFA Spooky Galactic Nebula Realm in this fictional Japanese manga land. it’s not on google maps. I need to give these two babies a big hug and wrap them up in a blanket and treat them to some McDonalds Happy Meals please help
other things: (1) ENDEAVOR CHILLING OUT IN DEKU’S “PEOPLE I HOLD DEAR” PANEL LMAO NEON DISCOURSE EXTRAVAGANZA, (2) “ONE FOR ALL IS A POWER TO SAVE, NOT TO KILL” I’M ABOUT TO CRY DEKU I LOVE YOU SO MUCH HOW IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE TO FEEL ALL THIS LOVE, (3) [SLAMS HANDS ON TABLE] THERE’S YOUR MOTHERFUCKING IRON WILL!!!!!!!! -- I’m sorry, please don’t call security, I’ll be good
I just randomly remembered that Deku is still saying all of this in his muffled “FMMPHHMMPHMM” voice and I’m somehow cracking up lol. so actually it’s a very good thing Their Hearts And Minds Are Connected, otherwise they’d no doubt be all, “...what?”
Tumblr media
(ETA: so I completely missed this on account of it literally not being visible in the scan at all, but in the raw you can clearly see Baby Kacchan and Baby Shouto fanboying over All Might in two of these panels, and excuse me, ma’am??
Tumblr media
thank you very much Deku for including them in your montage, particularly since you’ve never seen Baby Shouto before lol. amazingly accurate image you managed to conjure up, all things considered.)
SDKFJLSKHG -- AS IF ON CUE???
Tumblr media
HE’S SO ADORABLE HELP?? Trippy Space All Might looks like he’s about to cry, and First is all “don’t crack a smile... you have to be Firm and Serious here... dammit, don’t smile” omg
anyways! YOU GO DEKU. “MY QUIRK MY RULES, BITCHES” damn, son
KLJLKKHLG TRIPPY SPACE ALL MIGHT LITERALLY ACTUALLY IS CRYING ALL MIGHT HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME
Tumblr media
“I JUST... [CLENCHES FIST] REALLY LOVE SAVING PEOPLE” FUCKING HELL LMAO THIS IS THE WORST INTERVENTION OF ALL TIME
Deku is literally all “sure, maybe I’ll have to kill him, but have you guys also considered, MAYBE NOT??” it’s no use Nana he’s too powerful
LMAO FIRST
Tumblr media
“like I’ve been saying this whole time, you should definitely try saving Shigaraki Tomura.” “but, uh... First, didn’t you just -- ” “shut up”
(ETA: clearly it’s not just his brother who inherited those smooth-talking genes.)
so now Deku has turned back into a sixteen year old and his clothes have gone missing again. just OFA things
Tumblr media
dskljdlsklgk
Tumblr media
yes... sure... “testing” you...
HEY
Tumblr media
FIRST OF ALL, DAMN YOU HORIKOSHI YOU MADE NANA CRY. even if I’m pretty sure they’re actually tears of happiness/relief. and SECOND OF ALL, “TELL MY BOYFRIEND I SAID HI” DJSKDLKJJL ANYWAY MAYBE GRAN, NANA, AND MR. SHIMURA WERE IN A THROUPLE
[SCREAMS]
Tumblr media
WHY WOULD YOU END IT THERE?? WHY WOULD YOU END IT THERE!!!!!
(ETA: and two-to-one odds that we cut away to some other scene once they finally start to turn around next week. I’M CALLING IT NOW. giving myself a week to brace myself for the rage.)
fucking hell. well if anyone needs me I will be adding Horikoshi fucking Kouhei to the list of irredeemable villains, peace

A fndm u dont know.? mmmm....kimetsu no yaiba?
Okay to be fair, I've seen re:take's summary. not that it helped me understand anything that's going on.
Alright here goes:
Typical Shounen Protag (dead family, pre-teen/teen) gets an old masked mentor and also a loli in a box that sometimes changes form so that it's legal to lewd her probably. She's muzzled, too, which is great since she's carried in Protag's backpack. I'd scream too if I were her. Anyway.
There's a pretty boy who's the deus ex machina, and his name is Giyuu. There's a man who's Snake from Black Butler but with a Kakashi mask and badly cut black hair. There's a Loud Fire Man with scary eyes and big eyebrows that I don't want near me. He seems like a big brother figure for Protag. It's always the Fire Types. There's a sadistic Butterfly Woman, her name is Shinobu. There's a gross and crying half pink half green woman. She's scary and her haircut is ugly, i'd beat her with a stick if i saw her. Don't come near me. There's a man with many scars who's scary but probably a good guy in the end. There's a man with 3 wives. He's pretty hot and seems pretty rich (diamond headband and all) I hope he accepts new spouse applications. All of these are the good guys and they're called the Pillar men, like in Jojo. They help Protag on his journey after not killing him.
Speaking of Jojo and Black Butler, there's a half-Okuyasu/half Cheslock dude (Genya?) who ends up dead. :(
They fight with swords that make waves when they breathe. Or fire if they're the loud fire guy (Rengoku??).
There's a loud pork man who has blue hair and pronouns. He's Protag's competent sidekick and half the fandom (the half that's not thirsting on the Pillar men or the loli) is thirsting on him. There's also a pervert comic relief sidekick who wants to fuck the loli. I have no idea what's their purpose.
Anyway they fight demons (I think? Since the name is Demon Slayer? but they look like vampires) and Immortal Genderfluid Michael Jackson. IGMJ gets an unsatisfying ending, I think, but I'm not sure what it is.
There's also, like, spider people (??) and Kita Shinsuke's ancestor (or Naoya Zen'in if you're more into jjk than hq!!) somewhere in Tokyo.
Probably, Protag (Zenitsu??? Inosuke is blue pork dude) wants to find a cure for his sister (à la Elric Brothers) but also wants to be the very best (à la Shounen Protag). He's kind and everyone loves him. He beats bad guys with his weird sword and the power of friendship and don't touch my sister.
There's a Happy Ever After And Everyone Is Married Somehow Shounen Typical Ending.

thoughts on chap 139 from someone who’s been in this shitshow for 8 years
FIRST OFF: I wanna say I enjoyed the ending. Contrary to popular belief, I’m not agreeing with everyone here. I looked for thoughts on both here on Tumblr and on Twitter before I decided to write this. I wanted to hear different opinions and I swear I feel like some of us didn’t read the same thing.
Here’s some things I enjoyed:
Gonna get this out of the way because it’s annoying and it’s how people are taking Eren’s characterization. I feel like y’all got so caught up with fanon, mean man bun Eren to the point y’all forgot who he really is: an impulsive brat. An emotional protagonist who grew up too fast. A guy who does cry and a nineteen year old who is allow to have selfish thoughts. I feel like his outburst and bad word choosing about his feelings for Mikasa is Eren. We haven’t seen that Eren for a long time and many forgot who he was. I don’t understand why people are saying he is an “Incel” now. I feel like many just forgot who he was. Eren being tied to his emotions is something I always loved about his character, especially in a shounen protagonist.
Armin is my all time favorite character in this series, and still is. I’m happy Armin did become like the “hero” at the end. Him taking the heat off of Mikasa and him and Eren getting a final goodbye. I’m glad we got to see that Eren did love Armin enough to tell him what was happening too and get a goodbye. They were best friends and before this we thought this would end with them hating each other. I’m also happy that Armin was to one to see Eren’s outburst; to me it shows how much they trust each other. Eren’s real self came out, Armin made fun of him and gave him some wise words. Armin even punched him! They got their goodbyes, he grieved, and now he is trying to make the world better.
Now for Mikasa here is gonna be short in my happy list. I wanna say how she is grieving on her own, seems very her. I can see how people are saying this “ruins” her character but I mean would y’all immediately go back to being you after having kill the love of your life? You wouldn’t be sad on the anniversary of a loved one’s death? I sure would be. We saw how Mikasa was about Sasha dying. She was crying, grieving, stayed at her grave. This is how she grieves. Also Mikasa being alone?? Literally everyone on that boat is going to visit Mikasa and see Eren’s grave. Mikasa keeping the red scarf instead of tossing it like Eren told her to seems like her too. She wants to keep his memory alive and not forget him.
I’m glad we all got some kind of happy ending. I feel like this was a good way to do it. I’ve already accepted that Eren was meant to die, which was hard for me as someone who really does love his character and him being my second fav. Even with a dark manga like SnK, they can have good endings. I’m glad we got another little time skip to see how everyone is doing.
I’m super fucking glad we got to see Historia. I was about to get mad if we didn’t see her again after everything.
Levi living made me happy. There’s been so many scares of him not making it and I’m glad he did.
Gabi and Falco. That’s it.
SEEING THE ONES WE HAVE LOST THROUGH OUT THE SERIES MADE ME SOB LIKE A BABY I LOVE WE GOT THAT IT PULLED MY HEART STRINGS SO MUCH
Everyone on that table acting like themselves. We never see that often and I’m glad we got that.
Hitch yawning.
ALRIGHTY Now for my hits on the ending:
Why the FUCK was Historia’s baby brought up to be so important for it to not mean anything??? Gonna be honest, the father war was dumb and always knew the farmer was the dad. Not shocked about that outcome but her giving birth during the Rumbling wasn’t symbolic anyway?? She just had a normal birth?? I was in on the theory of her baby being Ymir Fritz reincarnated. I don’t like how Historia had GREAT character development, set up to be pretty important, only for her to be written out of the main story due to her getting pregnant. She became a super minor character whose importance was shattered.
Speaking of Ymir Fritz, what happened to her?? What about the worm parasite?? It made it look like Eren ended everything with the Titan power being destroyed. If that was the case, why was she there when Mikasa kissed Eren and smiled? What was the point? If Eren could have easily used the Founder to rid the power of the Titans then why did he go so far into the Rumbling??
Armin thanking Eren for the Rumbling I thought was strange. Like “thanks for 80% of humanity being lost just to make me hero”. I think it could also be a manipulative tactic since Armin is like that but I feel like he wouldn’t do that to Eren. More confused on it than hating it.
I wish we knew what Mikasa did during those three years after burying Eren. Does she live alone? Does she have someone with her? Are her and Armin still close even while he is away? What’s her hobbies now? A part of me wished she went to her family in Hizuru. She has strong importance there but she’s not there. I wanted to see that side of her very badly. Like I said I understand why she left everything but I want to know who Mikasa is now after Eren died and Armin is an ambassador.
I will say the memes are funny but we know Eren isn’t the bird. Come on guys. He’s now long dead and the bird is a symbol of Eren’s memory and his freedom.
Again, I enjoyed the ending despite it’s flaws. I feel this is the happiest kind of ending we could get for SnK. A part of me does wish that it had just a couple of more chapters added to fix the flaws. I keep track of my anime watching and manga reading on Anilist and it has SnK listed as having 141 chapters. I wonder if that was the og plan but got turned different later. It could also be a mistake in the editing but who knows. I came into this series as a 13 year old who got captivated in this since the first episode of the anime premiered. Now I am a 21 year old who got the honor of bringing this series with me through high school, college and now my adulthood. I will always love this series and it will go down as one of my favorites ever. I can’t wait to see the ending animated this coming winter. Thank you for all your hard work Isayama and I hope my tears make your spa great.

rev, rev, fight the power: thoughts on the first half of chainsaw man
Spoilers through the end of the Bomb Girl Arc.
Devil Hunting in the Age of Fascism
As one of the cohosts of a podcast on Gundam Wing in 2020/2021, I've been thinking a lot about how authoritarian regimes and the concept of societal control is treated in anime. Which is to say: usually in a very limited sense, and based on the actions of a few bad actors, as demonstrated with its effects on a few unfortunate protagonists. It's not that creators don't care about the issue, but rather a sign that the genre (and yes, I do consider manga/anime to be a genre more than just a medium, but that's for another time) and its conventions are not particularly well-suited to showing you those effects.
So, Chainsaw Man. On an individual character level, Fujimoto has some stuff to say about the choice between death and life, and I do want to talk about that and what it says about the characters and what life means in CSM. But it's hard to tell whether or not he meant to create a world with some really fucked up institutions too.
For instance, the civilian, non-public sector Devil Hunters. These appear to be explicitly authorized by the Japanese government, to the point where it is a crime for the Public Safety division's hunters to kill a devil that a civilian is in the process of capturing. They don't have guns (this is Japan!) and I imagine they are only allowed to kill Devils, but just, like, think about this. What if you kill someone else in the process of trying to kill a Devil? What if you suspect someone is a Fiend but actually they're just acting weird? What if you kill someone, then claim later it's because you thought they were a Devil?
Tumblr media
This is likely the American in me talking, but I can’t help thinking about how badly this would be abused and how horrible an idea that would be. And I can’t help but think about how the Devils allow the world of CSM to separate fears from human nature. By which I mean, in the world of CSM, evil is otherized in a very specific way; they’re represented by very individual, very distinct, and very monstrous representations. Here is the fear of scissors, the fear of sharks, the fear of the future, and so on. But in the real world, we know it isn’t just fear itself that is the problem; it’s people, well-meaning or otherwise, animated by those fears that create the most evil, or people harnessing those fears to gain power. This may be unfair—I don’t know what Fujimoto has planned for Makima, whose mythos and power seems very much wrapped up in the idea of using Devils to her own advantage. But there’s an assumption here that all actions taken towards eradication of the Devils, or maybe just one Gun Devil, is a de facto good. And in 2021, that’s a very unnerving position to take.
Death in Chainsaw Man is a sacrifice. In these early arcs of the series, death is a "contract," an expending of activation energy to achieve something else. So Pochita gives Denji life (which is really a contract repaid, for when Denji gave him life), so the Devil Hunters "trade" something in a contract with a Devil for power (like Aki giving away literal years of his life to his curse sword), so Denji dying to the Eternity Devil would have freed the rest of the team. But there are plenty of deaths in the series where nothing is traded, nothing is given. These tend to be nameless victims or, in one harrowing scene, convicted felons who die at the hands of Makima as she chases down Katana Devil.
What did they gain? What was the contract formed by the deaths of these 雑魚?
Tumblr media
Makima says at some point when she's attacking the gangs that are affiliated with the Katana Devil that "the truly necessary evils are always kept collared and controlled by the state." Which I think is at its face about the fiends and Devils kept “collared” by the Public Safety Bureau. But maybe it’s also about the idea of sacrifice, about giving yourself over to the state, in order to control a world thrown into chaos. The contracts formed by the deaths of those ordinary citizens is meant to bring about an eradication of fear. It gives birth to the Public Safety Devil Hunters, to Devil Hunters in general, to the use of whatever means necessary to achieve an end. But whatever those consequences are, we only see them in the fates of Denji, Chainsaw Man, and the impossible characters around him.
A state under threat, a state that feels like it must collar evil in order to survive, will have ruinous consequences. I just hope we get to see what those are.
Just A Teenage Dirtbag, (Bomb) Baby
I read some reviews about Denji being the anti-shounen shounen manga hero which I can presume were written by people whose only frame of reference is Bleach, Naruto, or One Piece. Sure, the Big Three were, in their most simplistic forms, feel-good series, and CSM's first half is basically a feel-bad series, but that hardly makes it unusual. It's really not dissimilar from other manga like Homunculus, Freesia, and Oyasumi Punpun. Of course, only old fogies like me, who still remember getting scanlations of these series off of IRC, and query, of course, whether or not those series are shounen at all, or more like seinen. If it were up to me to name the genre, and of course it is not, I would call it “simply another line of stories about fucked up things happen to fucked up people.”
Tumblr media
Many fucked up things have happened to Denji. I’d call it traumatic, but I don’t think “trauma” covers what this poor man has been through. The effect, though, has been to make Denji less than human, even in his human form.
Denji and Power's nonchalance towards the fate of their human coworkers who die to Katana Devil and Sawatari is framed by the manga through Denji as a potential sign of callousness. Kishibe notes it as a sign that they are "insane," in other words, "not like other humans," and thus capable of bringing down something like the Gun Devil, which would otherwise drive "normal humans" insane.
But like, huh? Denji and Power's reactions are, on the contrary, extremely human, because there’s no reason for them to extend feeling towards other humans. Simply put, they’ve never been human to the humans around them. They seem to be bonded most closely to each other, and in fact almost all the Fiends are, because the wider Public Safety employees treat them so poorly. Remember how the Infinity Devil Arc starts? Basically, they're told to be the advance guard, and threatened to be killed if they ever act out. Denji is kept on a short leash, and is so proud (in front of Reze) that he's allowed to go places on his own now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which, I'm not saying that that's wrong. Denji is incredibly dumb, holds monstrous power that could easily be tricked into using for horrible purposes, and appears to be the target of a number of Gun Devil's allies. Power is... well. I wouldn't let her out of sight either. But what Makima does that makes Denji feel so loyal, so utterly tied to her, is simply treating him as a human. She convinces him he has a heart, just like any other human. She tells him about all the love experiences he'll have in the future, because he's just a human teenager. And just like Makima, Reze is able to bond with Denji by treating him like an ordinary 16-year-old horny boy. Is it because as a Devil she knows what he wants the most? What he is craving, and never had? It doesn't matter that Denji had been just an ordinary human before fusing with Pochita or before he began his life as a Devil Hunter; as an orphan growing up on the street, unwanted and unloved, he was no more human than a Devil.
The ending of the Bomb Girl Arc—with Denji asking Reze to run away with him, only to be stood up—reminded me so very much of Aku no Hana. There's the classroom scenes between Reze and Denji, of course, but mostly I think about how Denji—betrayed, injured, manipulated Denji—still asks Reze to run away with him. I'd written about Aku no Hana before, how one of the saddest things about Nakamura is that she cannot imagine a world beyond her current circumstance (and, in fact, the manga ends up dooming her to stagnation). Denji and Reze are Nakamura and Kasuga's perverse mirror. It is because Denji doesn't have the capacity to imagine a larger world beyond his immediate now, three meals a day and a job and this woman who taught him how to swim, that he asks her to do this impossible thing, to run away with him knowing that to do would mean both of them betraying their masters. It is because Reze knows that it is impossible that she does not meet Denji at the cafe. Reze is more human than Denji, because she is capable of dreams, and because she is capable of dreaming, she knows she cannot afford their luxury. She knows too much about the world and its cruelty. And, so, she walks straight into its open maw, and straight into her death.
Tumblr media
I don't think we can take Reze at her word that she wanted to be a town mouse, or rather we should say instead that Reze proves that the division between the town mouse and the country mouse is immaterial. The issue is that both, in the end, are only mice, dreaming of a safety they can never achieve. Safety, in the world of CSM, is neither town mouse nor country mouse. It is to not be mice at all. It is to be the dog that digs them out from the cold winter dirt.
It is, in fact, to be Makima, the person who orders the dogs to kill the mice.
Denji, aim for the top! Transcend the town mouse/country mouse divide! Or else you will constantly be hunted and used!
(Side note: CSM goes at a break-neck pace, and I think the speed through which Fujimoto rushes through these early storylines has made it very difficult for me to actually connect with the characters. Reze and Denji’s relationship is one of the victims to this pacing. Do I believe that Denji could fall for a girl and be willing to risk it all for her after about 3 chapters worth of interaction? Sure, he’s that kind of guy. But does it work for me? Not particularly. We’ve hardly had time to linger with Reze before she swears she’ll protect Denji forever, as long as he’ll run away with her. Though the reader at that point knows there’s something off about Reze, it’s still just not believable. Reze’s actions seem like someone trying to bulldoze her way into Denji’s affections, and though she herself is a bittersweet character, I just really feel like CSM could have spent less time with Bomb Devil vs Chainsaw Man and more time with Reze and Denji.)
No Ethical Women Under Capitalism
The Eternity Devil arc, for all its mini-boss game feel (it wouldn’t be out of place as one of the floors in Tower of God), struck a nerve with me, if only because it felt, however unintentionally, to be a story about working under modern capitalism. A floor you can never leave, that loops endless, where the only way to escape is to destroy it, literally, from the inside, by making it so painful, an eternal feedback loop of destroying ourselves and destroying it, before it opens its heart to us. The Capitalism Devil threatens us, tries to tear us apart. Asks us to sacrifice the strongest, the weakest, anybody among us, as if by climbing over the bodies of our friends and coworkers, we can come out ahead. It makes us suspicious of each other, ready to tear into any weakness for an advantage.
No wonder this is the chapter where Kobeni lays bare her reasons for joining the Public Safety bureau. She needed to work, to make money. Her options were to be a sex worker or a Devil Hunter. Either way, she was selling her body to the system. Kobeni is a victim of capitalism, which forces her to do what she hates, for goal that are not hers, and then gaslights us into thinking that she’s wrong for being crazy, she’s wrong for losing her shit, for not being able to handle it.
Tumblr media
But... that's an asspull for me, even if it's my ass and I'm the one pulling. I'm truly not sure how to feel about Kobeni. Like, what is her deal?! I’m not sure what to make of her appearance in Chapter 20 in her sister’s hand-me-down. Are we supposed to pity her? See ourselves in her? Even in what I think was intended to be a mic-drop-ish line (at least for her), telling Aki that she didn’t quit because she was waiting on her bonus, landed flat for me, too deadpan to be pathetic and not sharp enough to be actually funny. Part of it may be because she is a character very much shaped by her circumstances as opposed to her personality or any interaction/action she does onscreen, but we don’t actually see her family situation in these chapters. We’re left with a painfully shy and cowardly woman who can’t seem to form any human connections with any of the other characters, who in multiple scenes is shown caving to the slightest pressure or threat.
Do the rest of the women fare any better? I’m not sure. Kobeni is unique in that she does not use her gender/sex appeal to manipulate the men around her and/or Denji (even Power lets Denji cop a feel to get her cat back!). Himeno, Makima, and Reze all hide their intentions for Denji behind the veil of his attraction to them (weak or strong) and are either unable or unwilling to be forthright in their desires and ambitions (Himeno to care for Aki; Reze, to accomplish whatever mission Gun Devil had her set out to do; and Makima, for fuck do I know at this point, but she’s up to something!!). Meanwhile, the men are straightforward to a fault. Did Fujimoto intend this? Is this just a subconscious reveal of his own conceptions of gender and Bitches Be Weird?
I’m not a person who needs to have a strong female narrative in a story, but when you start a story with a protagonist whose life ambition for many chapters was just to feel a boob, you better be careful, you know? CSM doesn’t lack for women; Makima and Power are both formidable characters in their own rights, self-assured and unbeholden to anyone but themselves. But so far almost every arc has featured a woman offering herself to Denji sexually in order to get him to do what they want. It’s getting real old real fast.

Coming off of true trainwrecks the likes of Mars of Destruction and Skelter Heaven, I actually came out of Dark Cat with a sense of respect and gratitude for its competence.
For the uninitiated, Dark Cat is a notoriously bad OVA from 1991 that you will see listed in many Worst Anime Ever countdowns. It follows 2 brothers, “dark cats” Hyoi and Rui, who investigate supernatural happenings and purify evil with their somewhat undefined powers of shapeshifting and increased strength/agility. The majority of the story in the OVA is about a school girl named Aimi, who is pining after her childhood friend Koizumi, who since the rejection and sudden death of his crush, has been suffering a depressive episode and ignoring her. Hyoi and Rui sense dark forces are manifesting at the school, and they keep an eye on Aimi while fighting off the increasingly brazen appearances of demonic enemies.
A monstrous ex-dark cat named Jukokubo is revealed to be manipulating Aimi with his dark powers, and Hyoi and Rui fight him, but not before Aimi succumbs to the evil magic -- as well as her own violent jealousy and overprotectiveness of Koizumi -- and transforms into a horrific tentacle monster that kills seemingly everyone in the school.
In the end, Koizumi realizes that Aimi was in love with him the entire time, and doesn’t fight her when she engulfs him completely. Apparently this act of selfless love was enough to purify them both, and although they do indeed die, their souls are “light” and able to ascend. This throws a wrench in Jukokubo’s plan to prove that humans are The Worst, so he turns tail and leaves his boss fight against Hyoi, threatening to return again. In the epilogue, Hyoi and Rui reflect on the mission and wax poetic about the nature of humanity while crossing a busy street.
… Ehm… happy ending, yes?
Now then: there are actually quite a few things I enjoyed about Dark Cat, and they are all very simple things that I had come to miss after days of watching other entries from the Bottom of the Barrel.
It had a narrative, and was -- mostly -- comprehensible in its storytelling, as rushed as it may have been. There was an undeniable presence of an art director, something I’m not convinced was present in a few of the other similarly rated titles I have seen. Some of the shots were noticeably well composed and even clever, and required an artistic vision and some decent effort to create. The animation wasn’t awful, the designs ranged from serviceable to genuinely charming (I like the subtlety of Hyoi and Rui’s cat-like features!), and I liked that the characters actually emoted. It wasn’t as generic as I expected and took some risks, even if they didn’t pay off and left it with a reputation of being “too grotesque to be enjoyable”.
I can understand the common criticisms of the gore and body horror being poorly animated, but I won’t decry it for existing and “being ugly”... of course it’s ugly, it’s body horror reminiscent of The Thing from The Thing. (Now would be a good time to warn people not to look this OVA up, unless they are sure they are okay with body horror and gore of this calibre. Tentacles with teeth and spines rip out of people’s skin from the inside and deform their hosts, it is quite awful! I would also include a warning for trypophobia -- there are shots where the mutations form clusters of holes on the skin.) The body horror in Dark Cat being disgusting and making my skin crawl isn’t a fault -- I think it’s the intended purpose. Though I will concede that:
The phallic imagery of the horrific flesh mutations, particularly that of the teacher who attacked Rui, was… bizarre, considering that otherwise the OVA isn’t particularly dark in tone or otherwise sexually graphic.
Perhaps having grotesque body horror is completely unexpected in a story about two bishounen teens (?) who can turn into cats and fight ghosts.
Yes, Dark Cat, the OVA put on Worst Anime Ever lists for being a grotesque spectacle, is just as commonly placed on those lists for being a dumb anime about guys that can transform into house cats and who fight supernatural entities with not so amazing powers. This is a gripe I’ve seen in a few popular reviews, but there was no point during my watching experience that I thought, “Man, these teens are pansies, they don’t even turn into big scary lions or anything! What’s the point, it’s practically a power-down! cinemasins ding” because I don’t go into anime expecting every single male character I see to be Big & Strong & Cool, because I uh… don’t have brain worms I guess? I don’t know what to say about this criticism really, other than people who watch a lot of shounen have very strange hang ups about super powers.
Otherwise, it seems the biggest reason Dark Cat is lauded as One of the Worst -- perhaps even ahead of the silly concept and nauseating gore -- is actually because of the abysmal english dub. It’s my honour to say that I didn’t watch the dub, so it doesn’t factor in at all into my impressions!
So in the end, perhaps my only true gripes with Dark Cat are:
Despite having no particular issue with body horror and gore existing, the extent of destruction and graphic death gave the OVA a bit of a snuff film vibe.
The conclusion to the story was quite bad.
It could be surmised by the brief plot outline I wrote earlier that Dark Cat isn’t a very complicated story. Demons and ghosts exist and wreak havoc on emotionally vulnerable humans, and supernatural soldiers try to mediate between the realms by purifying tortured ghosts and saving those dragged into darkness by evil entities. These beats are common in the supernatural genre of anime, but Dark Cat’s handling of its tragic morality tale left me more confused than anything.
Koizumi didn’t do anything wrong -- he shouldn’t have had to die for the sin of not reciprocating Aimi’s feelings, nor for developing depression after the rejection and death of his classmate and crush. Aimi… did things wrong, but was nevertheless the most compelling character in the OVA. Throughout Aimi was kind, patient, and forgiving when it came to being treated badly by Koizumi. In the finale however, it is revealed that Aimi was the one responsible for Koizumi’s crush’s death, assumedly having murdered her out of jealousy or out of revenge on Koizumi’s behalf for hurting his feelings. Prior to this, the first students to be killed by the tentacle monsters just happened to be the ones that had bullied Koizumi in class earlier that day -- implying that Aimi was getting revenge on them, as well.
It was with these revelations that I started to wonder: Why not just let the flesh monster manifest as a direct result of Aimi’s negative feelings? Aimi confessed to murdering Koizumi’s crush before the events of the OVA -- would she have done so if she wasn’t being influenced by the malignant force set on her by Jukokubo? I feel that her arc would have been much more interesting without the introduction of a non-compelling and badly designed villain like Jukokubo, because then we would know it was all her. Even if she was influenced by forces exacerbating her pre-existing jealousy and rage, that is a more satisfying option than having a big dumb green cat of a villain to trace everything back to so neatly.
And really, what did Jukokubo do in the story beyond take the spotlight, and the blame, from Aimi? He had some previous relation to Hyoi and Rui, but it’s not developed at all, and his ideological rivalry with Hyoi was trivial. Hyoi could have come to the same conclusions about holding out hope for humanity without Jukokubo there to insist he be a guest to debate on his political podcast.
The lack of accountability regarding Aimi is a part of why the resolution to her conflict with Koizumi feels so wrong -- he succumbs to her feelings because he realizes the evil was born from her suffering, and he feels that he has to sacrifice himself to make up for unknowingly hurting her so much that she turned into a monster from hell. In the end she is absolved via being purified and getting to die with her spirit entwined with Koizumi’s, and he apologizes for having not recognized how he was hurting her.
Aimi kills his crush, kills his bullies, and ends up -- inadvertently, at least -- killing almost all of their classmates, because she was tilted about her childhood friend not realizing she had romantic feelings for him. And when Koizumi learns all of this, he apologizes and dies with her, and this is proof of humanity’s goodness? The dark clouds part and the rain stops and Aimi and Koizumi ascend in a heavenly ray of light, because he decided, while she was devouring him, that he was wrong to ignore his murderous best friend’s love for him?
I guess it’s fine -- it was probably mostly Jukokubo’s fault anyway, and everyone was just an unfortunate victim of his meddling… 😒
Other than the bad writing, the string of deaths that happen in the finale when the monster lets loose in the school are quite uncomfortable to behold. Deformed student bodies are splayed and strewn around classrooms, and the bullies are rendered into unrecognizable mounds of pulsating flesh in their homes. The violence of a fight against a monster like this, I can handle, but the graphic images of helpless death were difficult to stomach. And in this OVA, there is no miraculous reversal of the demon’s damage once it is purified -- there is no implication whatsoever that everyone who died isn’t still just as dead as Aimi and Koizumi in the end.
The main thing I was actually worried about when I watched Dark Cat was that there would be sexual assault, thanks to reviewers griping it for “generic hentai tentacles”. I am relieved to say that there is none, at least not insofar as deserving a comparison to actual porn. There is sexual content scattered throughout the horror scenes: The occasionally phallic appearance of the tentacles, shots of the tentacles coming down from under skirts, and there is one shot of nudity when Aimi’s shirt is ripped open as she transforms, though I would say it’s too horrific and ugly to be sexualized or otherwise considered “fanservice”.
What is the point of the hits of sex imagery in Dark Cat? I have no idea. This isn’t Alien, it isn’t about the horror of sexual assault or the violence of creation -- though the main horror of the scene where Rui is ambushed by the teacher seems to be that she uses magic to seduce him, only to reveal a very phallic tentacle from her mouth that she means to kill (or infect…?) him with, which can have multiple, potentially offensive readings… it is a one off, however -- and there doesn’t seem to be any moral posturing about it as is often seen in slashers. I couldn’t parse any sort of consistent STI allegory regarding the plague of tentacles upon the student body, despite how many summaries I have read that describe the tentacles as that, a “plague”.
… I realize I am probably the only person on earth to give any aspect of Dark Cat’s production this much thought. To sum up: It seems to just exist for the shock value. Considering the extent of disgusting imagery already present a la The Gore and Deformation of Human Bodies, I don’t think this OVA benefitted from featuring some explicit looking tendrils, beyond cementing its abhorrent reputation.
Is this all to say that I think Dark Cat is a good OVA? No, of course not. It’s tone deaf, and tasteless, and has awkward pacing and bad writing. But compared to the utterly soulless and artistically devoid works the likes of Skelter Heaven and Mars of Destruction, I would say the fact I was able to write this much about Dark Cat is testament to that fact that it at the very least, contains content -- and some of that content was like, decent! Skelter+Heaven was such a mess it was all I could do to understand the sequence of events, and Mars of Destruction was so bland I literally have no posts about it on the blog despite watching it more than once. Psychic Wars was a snoozefest I barely finished that similarly has no mention on the blog, and Hanoka’s production gimmick couldn’t save it from being a totally forgettable romance story.
Therefore, Dark Cat is the best worst title I have seen thus far, by virtue of being executed with an average amount of competency for an OVA from the early 90s, and for having a balance of good and bad elements that gave me something to hold onto and mull over after viewing.
3/10.
Oh, and I loved the bad 80s insert songs.

Why Zenitsu is my Favourite Character in Kimetsu no Yaiba
NO SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA
Tumblr media
Yeah, it’s pretty cool that the guy can one-shot anything he sees. Let’s just get that out of the way. It’s hype. He’s like a Pikachu version of One Punch Man but with his personality in the supreme opposite end of the spectrum which consequently makes him just as funny and badass to watch. I think that’s initially what draws most people to his character on a surface level. Heck, that’s what made him so endearing when I was introduced to the series as well. But he’s evolved into so much more than that for me over time.
AKA. That in-depth analysis post that I make every year that is way too long because I want to talk about something so badly but no one else is doing it.
I remember catching up to the manga a few weeks ago and not being able to choose who my favourite character was. They’re just all so good. It was at some point that I realized while flipping the pages, to my (pun intended) shock, Zenitsu was and probably always has been the character I looked forward to seeing the most. It’s like he snuck up on me and was already clinging before I even noticed he was there. Sure the running gag where he fights while sleeping is amusing to watch. Sure the Thunder Breath is an amazing technique. He has a great design to back all of that up, not to mention that his backstory tugs at the heartstrings. But change a few words around and you could apply that reasoning to basically any character in the series.
There lies my dilemma where I couldn’t decide on a favourite of the cast. What stuck out to me and started setting Zenitsu apart from the rest was how he fought. Of course, this isn’t the only reason I like him so much. However, I feel that a lot of people misinterpret his fighting style so it seems best to use that as a starting point.
Sadly, the fact that he needs to be unconscious in order to battle and that his conscious personality is so abhorrently pathetic compared to his sleeping one isn’t new to anime and has been done countless times. Like many people, I expected the usual revelation of Zenitsu having a split personality or alter ego or “dark yandere side.” I’ve seen either it or some variation of it so many times in anime, manga, and video games. I mean, how else would anyone explain his ability to fight while sleeping? It’s the easiest way to have any of it make sense and is the route most stories like to go.
It very quickly seemed like the path his character was taking would be entertaining but ultimately not unique in any way. Seeing as most characters of his type rely on the gag / fighting style in order to remain zany and popular, he most likely wouldn’t develop much past it either. But as the series progressed and very early on (ie. where the anime is now), you come to realize that this simply isn’t the case.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To begin with, it’s apparent just by watching episode 17 that there is no crazy side of his mind at work here. When Zenitsu sleeps, he fights. When he fights, he's dreaming. He states here immediately after waking up that he had such a wonderful dream about being powerful like he’s always wanted. He had a dream where he was strong enough to defeat the demon and brave enough to make decisions. But evidently, that’s exactly what he was doing in reality. When he dreams, he’s the one controlling his own body in the outside world and making judgements on what to do in battle.
How does he do this without say, ramming into a tree about 5 seconds in? He reveals pretty early after his introduction that he’s always had amazing hearing. It was so advanced that it creeped others out and drove them away. One statement he makes in particular is that he can recognize entire conversations that are happening around him even as he’s sleeping. Now, that’s interesting. Why did the series bring that up if it wasn’t important? He can sense someone’s presence, emotions, and even intentions based on sound alone. It’s perfectly logical that, just like Tanjiro, he’s able to detect his surroundings except using his ears instead of his nose. He most likely goes one step further to project that into his dreams in order to fight without any eyesight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In other words, there is no alter ego. It’s all him. Zenitsu’s just that good. When he sleeps, he’s culminating everything that he trained and all of his hopes and wishes towards becoming a better person who doesn’t run away into that one moment. When he sleeps, he rids himself of all of his fears and doubts so then his body can fight completely on instinct and clear-minded focus. He can do it. But his low self-esteem and fear of dying alone gets in the way. It’s only inevitable that it does. After all, he’s been told his entire life by everyone except one person about how useless he is until he actually believed it. He can’t even stomach accepting compliments on his strength.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That isn’t a normal reaction to being told that one is strong. That scene did a pretty good job of highlighting the contrast between how Zenitsu (very happily) embraces praise on being great versus how he completely rejects the idea of anyone thinking he isn’t a useless coward. It says a lot that his image of himself is so bad that his own body and mind developed this unique way of fighting and force him into losing consciousness as a defense mechanism whenever there’s a threat of death nearby.
Tumblr media
Of course, the series makes it no secret that this “running gag” has taken a toll on Zenitsu’s mental health. He always awakens believing that everything he just did only happened in a dream, which explains why he clung to the idea of Shoichi being the powerful one so vehemently. He never gets the chance to confront his fears properly. Subsequently, his hate for his cowardly self grows even bigger each time it happens and so does his belief that he just can’t do it. And that’s what really gets to me. The sleep-fighting is not just a running gag. It’s a snowball effect. The series uses what seems like a gimmick that is so worn down in anime to the point of becoming a troupe and turns it into a young boy’s ongoing uphill battle against his own mind and hate for himself.
Tumblr media
That’s why it’s so important that by the end of the series, Zenitsu learns how to fight without sleeping at all.
Yup, that’s right. His character seems to be heading the exact opposite direction of where I thought he’d go because of how counter-intuitive it is. For the sake of his own growth, he has to overcome and be rid of the zany gag that was what initially drew watchers to him in the first place. Eccentric traits such as this are usually a safety net for stories that aren’t confident enough in their plot or characters. It’s how authors get more sales. But Zenitsu isn’t written out to be a butt monkey badass for views. He’s written as a real person. He’s failed. He’s succeeded. Some people believe in him while most don’t, but what really matters is that he starts believing in himself.
Zenitsu as a character really speaks to me in that sense. He can only do one thing. After all these years of training, he can only perform one single attack. It’s discouraging to work so hard and only be able to achieve one goal while others can reach triple the amount with half the effort and time. It’s easy to start running away and thinking you can’t do anything right because of that.
Despite the poetry that shounen anime like to wax, that’s the reality for most of us when our lives are on the line. We complain and laugh about how annoying Zenitsu is when he imitates a whiny baby that screams in fear at everything, but the fact of the matter is that the way he acts is the most realistic given his upbringing of people looking down on him, his past filled with failures, and the effect that his continued sleep-fighting is having on his well-being. Why should he die in this war if it’s inevitable that he can’t win and there are other people much better for the job? It’s a chillingly accurate impact that living in a world where it’s so easy to die at the hands of a demon can have on someone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, because Zenitsu never gave up, he managed to hone that skill with the intent of at least becoming the best at that one thing. Thunder Breathing First Form is meant to be a straight one-strike attack. If driving school has taught me anything, it’s that the faster you’re going, the more the most minuscule of mistakes can spiral into gigantic deviations in movement. Yet he’s taught himself how to use Thunderclap and Flash six times in a row (hence six fold) and in six different directions / distance of his choosing in such quick succession that it looks like he's using it continuously. We even saw how his fifth step landed him perfectly on a thread so he could bounce off of it for the finishing blow.
Just imagine how much dedication and training it takes to have that kind of control. He grew up with nothing. He’s trained so hard just to be able to do one thing. Now he’s going to make his “dream” of being powerful enough to help people into a “reality” on only that and that alone. His eventual development away from relying on sleep-fighting is a representation of it. And that’s when he officially started ascending into becoming my favourite character.

Doctors hate him.
Local man faster at finding new fingers than modern medicine.
It’s nice that we never have to wonder which parts of the story Isayama finds interesting. Clearing out all the titans after a hundred years? Dull. Uninspiring. Have a beach day laced with sadness. Announcing the identities of the Armored and Colossal Titans? We got a fight to get to, chop chop.
We have several groups of people who all think this is a terrible idea but have internal disputes and distance issues that interfere with them collaborating and making a feasible offensive?
-looks for the fast forward button-
Like. Part of me -- a very considerable part of me -- finds this hysterical. In a good way.
I have spent the last... more months than I feel like counting slowing writing my way through a oneshot only I care about. It is taking a long time to write, in part, because of pacing. I am very worried about making sure the pacing of the story stays steady, so all of the beats land right.
Some of the additions such care requires are not my favorite things to write, but for the good of the story feeling like something I can say with confidence I’ve put my best effort into, they’re necessary.
So I’m in flabbergasted awe, here, that someone is out in the world, getting paid to skip everything they evidently find too boring to actually spend time on.
The worst part is it’s really hard to even fault the logic.
Presenting our resolved conflicts!
Is Connie going to kill Falco???
Making Falco and Gabi’s island getaway even more traumatic for the dozenth time even though they’ve had all their character development for it??????
Is Armin going to get make it in time to stop Connie from committing a murder that will definitely happen????
Will Gabi hate everything all over again!?@?!12?
The answer to the first question is no.
It has been no since the concept was introduced.
Even Sasha’s dad is all, “Yeah, it’s probably fine that Connie kidnapped this child.”
Is Jean on Floch’s side now?
No, he’s had that character development already.
Is Mikasa on Floch’s side now?
No.
Is Mikasa doing anything at all or joining Reiner in his depression nap on the floor?
Mikasa joined a rebellion but didn’t have a depression nap on the floor because she was given a bed and also only like five people can sleep with all the rumbling going on.
Will she find her scarf?
Who has her scarf?
Is it the last person seen with her scarf?
Is it the last person seen with her scarf who idolizes Mikasa and first met Mikasa when she was wearing that scarf?
Who also idolizes Eren, who gave her that scarf?
Does Louise have the scarf?
scarfscarfscarfscarfscarfscarfscarfscarfscarfscarfscarfscarf
Mikasa found her scarf.
Louise found it first.
As with most things lately, Eren was a bastard about it.
Mikasa has her scarf.
Is Annie going to reunite with the gang and cause shenanigans?????
Sure, why not?
Is Reiner being left in some building somewhere with food no one is making him eat going to result in something bad for Reiner?
Nope, Armored Titan. Plot included.
Is Reiner ever going to wake up?
Yep.
Are the two volunteers with names in any real danger?
Yes, but Floch’s probably not likely to shoot them now.
Is Falco going to find out that his life got even sadder while he was asleep? :(
Yes.
Are the people of Paradis going to get used to their new Titan overlord just like they got used to the walls, leaving the majority to figure this is not their problem and creating the kind of moral squalor that led to their new Titan overlord completely losing his shit in the first place?
Yep.
Does the plot’s chronic abandonment of Hitch imply a good future for her?
Totes.
Are any of the conclusions to these events surprising in a way that would require more buildup to provide understanding of what is going on?
Nnnnnot really?
Fantastic, let’s not waste time on it. We’ve got a volume to end and a badass crew we want looking pretty.
(Also, Levi still really wants Zeke dead.)
It’s really important that all of these high stakes that the audience is so concerned with are dealt with so we can move into the final arc without any lingering thoughts about things that might get in the way of actually writing the final arc.
I think the worst victim here is Connie’s subplot, because things move too quickly for the emotional weight to come home. At the same time... Connie was never going to kill Falco. There’s only so much suspense you can put there when half of Connie’s thoughts about killing Falco are how maybe he shouldn’t be killing Falco.
Armin’s inclusion and the callback to Serum Bowl likewise doesn’t have much meat on it. Armin feeling inadequate is nothing new, and his complicated feelings on who receives Titan powers are likely always going to be complicated. The only conflict to really resolve here is the physical one of getting Connie away from Falco before some dumb accident happens.
That conflict happens, and squared away it gets.
More, “You betrayed me, Mr. Kru -- I mean Connie, :( :(” doesn’t actually benefit the plot at all. More time given to Falco to react to something the audience has known for months doesn’t really benefit the plot at all. Less time with Gabi and Falco being sad little munchkins arguably does benefit the plot, with how many times they’ve been called on for that role.
Connie cooling down and being pals instead of perpetually angry was going to happen at some point. Throw it in with the rest. Armin needing someone to lean on without melodramatic childhood bonds fits right in. Throw it in.
Did we need Louise?
I would argue I wanted more of Louise, but my opinion seems to matter very little in these things
Mikasa needs Louise. Louise is someone Mikasa inspires into following Eren down the wrong path. Louise is the mouthpiece that tells Mikasa that Eren, who promised to wrap her scarf around her as many times as necessary, wants nothing to do with it anymore.
Louise is someone Mikasa protected, and she’s dead.
One last nail in that awkward coffin.
And I guess we just don’t like children anymore and Falco and Gabi have all the survival tokens, so yeah, throw Louise on the pyre too.
What else, what else... oh, more Floch and speeches. Because he’s still allowed to talk. More happy voices about how no one has to worry about dying anymore because everyone who would think of killing you is going to be murdered.
Uhhhh. Annie could conceivably be there, right?
Yeah, sure.
Annie’s here now.
We all are agreed that was always going to happen, right? No problem?
Public executions in front of an angry mob?
For one morally bankrupt religious nut and one Good Boi who deserves the chance to punch Floch in the face a few times before shooting him?
Yeah, pile that on. Make it really clear that if Eren was going to destroy the world, he might as well have taken out the island too, since we’re doing the whole party anyway.
Give Onyankopon a really solid moment, too. Someone in the chapter has to represent that genocide is bad. Well, Connie sort of implied that already. But Onyankopon has been screwed over the most for doing absolutely everything right, so he deserves the chance to point out that everything is fucked and also fuck you this is terrible you were supposed to be better.
Then like, uh.
That gives us a cast, right?
We’ve got Jean, Magath, Pieck, Yelena, Onyankopon, Hange, and Levi on one side, and Reiner, Annie, Falco, Gabi, Connie, Armin, and Mikasa on the other.
Fourteen!
One over thirteen!
That’s like lucky, right?
Can we do the plot now?
Can we, can we, can we?
It’s amazing.
It’s abominably paced, but oh wow is it incredible. Need everyone on the island who has an interest in stopping this in agreement? Well, here’s a chapter for you. Now they are. Now we can actually maybe like. Do stuff. Against Eren.
Good luck figuring out how, but we’ve at least got everyone assembled now.
Except Historia.
Because you know, fuck the Queen.
...Does anyone on the island remember they have a Queen?
This is a serious question.
Like no, this is amazing. It’s like, well, we could have a bunch of chapters slowly building up to this point while everyone starts counting Wall Titans in the background and wondering when we’ll get on with actually fixing this massive problem instead of just detailing it further for the hundredth time.
Or.
Or.
We could just admit that we all basically knew this was coming, so we can skip to the good stuff. Good? Good.
Only we make sure to draw it all out so there’s no argument over how it went down and no one does anything dangerous like apply imagination while a hasty time skip patch job takes hold.
Because that’s probably next chapter.
SHOUNEN POWERS ACTIVATE.
Team Fuck Zeke vs. Team People Die When They Are Killed And We’re Not About That (right now).
Pray tell, do any of you have the power to do literally anything about this?
I do wonder if that’s some of why we’re zooming through these points. While I think there’s a slightly legitimate case to be made that extra time on things we all realized were going to go down is not needed (...it... is needed, for like. enjoying things, but you know let’s just not), part of that hinges on the complications they’re about to face.
Stopping Connie from child murder eats up time. Finding Annie takes time. Confirming Mikasa’s scarf reunion takes time. Confirming Levi and Hange are alive takes time. Confirming Magath and Pieck are willing not to murder them immediately takes time.
I don’t think Levi and Hange’s side is too badly harmed from the pacing. It’s fast, but it’s working with the backing of time. They’ve been absent for a while, and catching us up on where they are and what ground they’re standing on proceeds smoothly. Without the rest of the chapter being what it is, I don’t think the starting scene would feel particularly unusual.
Even the rest of the chapter with its speedrunning ways isn’t too terrible once your brain is expecting it.
...I can’t really excuse Annie.
Unless Rule of Funny comes into play. But even then, yeah. Wow.
Anyway, what I’m getting at is that despite our full cast of degenerates assembled, we still don’t have a workable plan in sight. Five of the nine Titans are working together against Eren. One remaining is missing in action, but also generally anti-Eren at this point.
Then we’ve got nine humans.
So what?
One Colossal Titan with a baseball enthusiast destroys the Survey Corps, and only dies due to human error and someone’s willing sacrifice.
Eren’s got more than we can count, and the stegosaurus behemoth he’s using as a body now.
It’s all very nice and good to form a united front of fourteen people deciding to kill a god, but what does that actually mean?
Even if we’re generous, and include Shadis and his allies in the available forces, how does that actually help anyone? Does anyone have a good idea of how to get to Eren, let alone stop him? Has anyone in this group had a single stable conversation with him since he set out on his own?
If we took an extra couple of chapters to settle down all of the live wires this one grounds, those issues would still be at the front of the main plot. Drifting into the side pools doesn’t damage the story, but it does interfere with momentum.
Stories are hard. Balancing a story’s pace between what the completed work will look like and what the audience is currently experiencing is a nightmare.
This story has the largest conflict it will ever probably face, and a bit of a list of things to check off before it can get around to dealing with that. So it goes with the option of speeding through the list and skidding to a halt in front of the main show.
I don’t exactly approve of it, but given that this is what was chosen, it’s hard to turn away the benefits. I didn’t really want to read about Connie’s shenanigans with Falco and Armin turning into more shenanigans when they come across Annie and try to figure out if they have to kill her, then yet more with --
There is a lot going on. Consolidating that into a lot going on, but with everyone on the same side proactively working together... I like where this lands us.
It’s just really, really funny.
I don’t think I have another example of an author not wanting to write something, so just. not. This whole chapter is like, “oh wait I wrote myself into a hole well now I’m just going to erase that hole and move along.”
From a writing standpoint, it’s hard not to find that endearing. Wiping the slate clean is something you can do endlessly in unpublished works, but with published works, once you ink yourself into a situation, that situation tends to demand attention.
These situations got a little. As a treat.
:)
But back to the state of the story, the primary conflict is pretty firmly locked in, “Well now what?”
Ideally, you lace, “Well now what?” in with all the subplots you have going, and then upon their conclusion you have a solid, “What has arrived!” moment, and everything plays together beautifully, but this has chosen not to do that. Except with the emotional resolutions.
Team Fuck Zeke.
Team People Die When They Are Killed And We’re Not About That (right now).
-underlines the clears philosophies of the teams-
Wait Yelena doesn’t fit in on Team Fuck Zeke. Unless.
But yeah, so now what?
Does all of this friendly bonding help?
I mean. Maybe Magath and all of his highly influential Marleyan politics can land the good people of Paradis (aka the ones not enjoying their coup) a deal with the rest of the world to unite in taking down Eren?
Or something?
(Seriously, how many countries are looking at this and thinking to themselves, “If they hit Marley first, that’s one problem solved”? I do not think anyone has forgotten they hate Marley, they just hate other things (Eren) more right now.)
While we’re at it, maybe Armin and Mikasa shoot beams powered by friendship into Eren’s stegosaurus skull.
The story potentially still has a lot of downtime. Mixing that in with all of the subplots would absolutely be preferred, but doing that while keeping enough of the main story going to keep the tension up regarding the end of the world...
It gets tricky.
I am sympathetic to the difficulty.
Tumblr media
Amazing.
What a chapter.

A lot to talk about this chapter!
Tumblr media
What draws near? Blood-loss? Death? Fainting? I’m probably reading into this too much and Toga’s just talking about passing out.
Edit: In the mangastream translation, she said, “I’ve gotten closer to you”. So it’s her feeling closer to Izuku.
Tumblr media
1) I agree with the IT guy. Fighting at the front lines when you have a remote detonation quirk is such a bad idea, but I do understand that Curious wanted an interview so badly that she risked her life for it.
2) Yeah, yeah. Re-Destro crying. Doesn’t mean anything if you just keep tossing fodders to their death. Brings me back to when the League lost Magne and how far they went for someone who fought alongside them.
From the Heroes who celebrated Kouta’s parent’s acts of heroism that lead to their deaths and endangering Hawks to act as a spy, to Overhaul who actively sacrificed his own subordinates to buy himself time and fuse to grant him power, and now this group... The League of Villains are the ones that embody the power of friendship the most. Wow.
3) Was there any surprise that everything is on camera? I love how they’re like, “No matter what we do, they are the ones who look like the good guys here.” Idk why not think about why you guys seem like the villains when you’re up against a group of actual villains? Hmmm?
Tumblr media
Give this man a break. He’s been through grueling torture and he’s still sane. He’s not at his best, ok?
I wonder if this IT guy has a quirk that has something to do with brains waves and neurons. That would be pretty cool. My second guess is something technology based.
Tumblr media
Poor Spinner hasn’t defeated anyone. Strangely enough, I never saw Dabi attack anyone this and the previous chapters.
He even talks about this later on in the chapter:
Tumblr media
He waited for Shigaraki’s cue to start actively fighting! (Some food for thought for you ShigaDabi fans). I’m still trying to put together what Dabi thinks about the league: On one hand, he’s very distant from the rest of them, in a lone-wolf kind of way, almost like he’s picked apart by the author exclusively to be separated from the rest of the group. Dabi even said he didn’t care about Shigaraki’s past, and won’t help them with Giganto, and he was annoyed when they dragged him into the Liberation Army fight.
But on the other hand, you get him calling Shigaraki Leader, participating in certain operations like the attack on Overhaul’s ambulance and the Training Camp attack. He’s the one in the League trying the hardest to recruit people...
Dabi is still someone very difficult to puzzle out.
Edit: Mangastream translation what he said was “I was never cut out for sparing people”, and that he could start doing so after Shigaraki started killing these people. So less of following orders, and more of finally being free to kill people like he wanted to. It brings out more debate on just what the League is to Dabi, and what it does to his morality.
Tumblr media
We’ve seen many examples of fanatical beliefs in the series. Different ideologies that people believe in and fight for. All For One had a cult-like following. People believed in All Might so much that his retirement is marked as an end of an era. Stain’s last stand rallied up people who share his desire for a true hero society. Overhaul’s underlings would throw their lives away for him because he took them in.
Currently Deku’s “Saving everyone” is a goal the heroes all gather under, while Shigaraki’s “Destroy Everything” is something we see ambiguous reactions to among the League. Is it a strong motive that he can rally people under? Personally, I think he needs to continue developing that creed, but Toga does seem to agree with it.
Tumblr media
Sleepy Shigaraki ~<3! He barely slept in a month, plus his supposed break time was interrupted by the Liberation Army. Honestly surprised he’s still standing and fighting. He can hardly register the mob in front of him.
“It always gets like that when I’m sleepy. Does that mean he’s experienced this in the past? When fighting Gigantomachia maybe? Will we get a flashback to him developing this domino-effect-dusting during the past month?
Edit: Just a generalizing statement I guess. I still want to see if this is a quirk evolution or something he could always do.
Tumblr media
Interesting that Tenko’s face is blacked out. We won’t know if his face is wrinkled, whether he had black hair, and any facial scars. His features are being hidden and I think there’s a reason for that.
“Hana-chan”... Daww his sister has a mole on her right cheek! That’s so adorable (rest in peace ;_;)
“Even though Dad said all that.” Their dad disapproves of something. The leaks say that Tenko wanted to be a hero, and this dialogue is hinting to that. Their dad keeps a photo of Nana and himself in his childhood in his drawer that he kept secret. Hana knows Nana is a hero, and wants to encourage Tenko. What must have happened was that their dad felt bitter for Nana being a hero results in abandoning him, and he doesn’t want Tenko to be a hero.
“It feels so warm and tender. Aah, just why is it...?” 😭  The feeling of love and care is so foreign to Shigaraki now that he just don’t understand why he feels that way. And then the memory just cuts short, depriving him of that feeling, leaving him with the hollowness and rage again.
Tumblr media
Of course he’s in a bad mood now.
Shigaraki’s speed keeps getting brought up by various people, and it’s still unclear if there’s a correlation between that and his decay quirk, like whether his speed increased alongside the strength of the quirk? Just speculation.
At first I was confused since the wall didn’t disintegrate after he grabbed it to flip himself up, but in the next page it was shown disintegrated.
Also, he vomited after having a flashback again. I don’t know if it’s the flashback or throwing up that caused his sudden quirk-chain-reaction, and what he needs to do to use it again. We also don’t know if it’s something new or just something he’s always able to do, since the previous people he killed are not in contact with anybody else so there’s no way of telling if their decaying would spread to anybody else.
I can’t believe how many people thought Shigaraki was drooling rather than vomiting in the leaks XD. You guys are so thirsty over Shiggy fanservice.
Next time! Dabi vs Ice guy! Even though fire obviously melts ice, the rules of Shounen dictates that something’s gonna make this fight more interesting than Dabi curbstoming. The obvious connection between Dabi and Endeavor also proves that this time we’re going to dive into Dabi characterization and possible backstory.

Kimetsu no Yaiba Chapter 179 Review
youtube
I don’t know the appropriate phrase to say. “It’s a great time to be a fan,” or, “It’s the worst time to be a fan.” Make no mistake however. The series is on all-time high in hype, exhilaration, and investment. Sadly, it comes with tragedy, and this chapter did not hold back. My biggest fear has become a reality.
The last chapter was pretty depressing with Kokushibo came to his senses before he vanishes completely. The question on his existence will never be answered, and that alone is tragic. Sanemi is filled with rage to the point Himejima has to stop him from fighting. The crazy part is, the battle is already over, yet he was hell-bent to kill. It’s because Genya was declared dead that blew his fuse. It’s even crazier to think he was fighting unconscious. He’s a true mad man, but I highly respect him to fight for the greater cause. The battle is over; now here comes the hardest part: the goodbyes.
It was an early call for Himejima to declare Genya dead, but thanks to the demon’s ability, ironically, he is barely alive. I was a bit hopeful, letting out a sigh of relief. God, was that a major mistake in hindsight. It’s tough to watch Genya barely speaking with half of his body gone. I have seen others in badly wounded speaking, but this hurts inside because of his foundation and sacrifice. It’s admirable of him to ask Himejima for others’ status; putting them over himself. It’s also kind to request him to tend to Tokito quickly for his time is here.
It’s morbid to see a 14 year old boy laying down with missing limbs. I am aware Shounen can get brutal and disturbing. Some fans believe what they see in Shounen is similar to Fairy Tail or majority of current lineup of the Weekly Shounen Jump. For them, this would come off as a big surprise. Himajima gives his last gratitude and respect to Tokito; vowing to defeat Muzan no matter what. Like many have predicted, Tokito has passed away. I just wished for a miracle…
The afterlife scene is heartbreaking. Tokito meets with his brother at last, but he doesn’t want him to come near. He thought he died too young; he wanted him to live long. He wanted him to live for something, not died for nothing. Truth be told, I thought the last arc certified Tokito’s safety to live through the series. It surprised me that he died here. It’s why I had a hard time to believe his life was in danger. It changed drastically when he started to lose limbs; no way can he survive. The recent event sounds like it contradict the previous development; however, it did not.
The most important factor is happiness. Did Tokito live through a happy life? He was born to be happy. His life had ups and downs; happiness with his family, sadness with his loneliness. He recovered when he made friends with Tanjiro, Nezuko, and others. Looking back at the last arc, it certainly has become more valuable than ever. He regrets nothing, especially sacrificing his life for his comrades. Although his life ended tragically short, this fits very well to Shounen theme of friendship. It’s how the writer convey the theme that creates the series’ value, and that’s why this series is astounding.
What makes this scene so emotional is how it’s presented with touching words. Tokito explained his lifetime to his dear brother with tears; emotions running high. On top of that, despite not regretting anything, he’s heartbroken not because anyone would say his life was pointless, but his own brother was the one to say it. It hits me really hard; words are truly powerful. Hearing dreadful words like “You’re dead to me,” from a family can hurt you devastatingly. The brothers finally hug it out, yet the brother still wished Tokito lived longer. We all wished for it, but what’s done is sadly done.
Going back to the past, he and Genya were the most likely candidates to lose their life. Although I hate to say Tokito was the most expected death considering the circumstance, it still pains me to see him go. Earlier, Genya left me calmed for he has a chance to recover. It turns out I let my guard down far too soon. Once Sanemi finally wakes up, he realizes his little brother is crumbling. As soon as he said that, my mind didn’t want to register. Was it denial? I believe so, but the truth is out; Genya’s time is up.
Much like the scene with Tokito, this one is heartbreaking. Unlike the former however, it’s a brother saying goodbye, rather reuniting in the afterlife, so the narration doesn’t leave any room for happiness. Well, there’s something similar by the end. What makes the scene even more heartbreaking is that I care for both of them. Genya had a character arc; essentially becoming well-liked. What’s stunned me is his character can be considered as the next generation rising star, yet he’s going to die before his older brother. Killing him off is like killing off a rookie in another Shounen series, say like a student from the protagonist’s class in My Hero Academia. It’s honestly shocking.
As for Sanemi, I have gained enough respect to his character recently. Learning more of his background, I grew to like him far more than my first impression. With that said, his agony really hits me harder than it should have. A sibling bond is one that cannot be described by a simple word. It’s hard and gut-wrenching to watch one slowly fading, let alone dying. To make things even sadder, he’s about to lose his one and only family member. Let’s hope he’s the “what if” of Tanjiro alas fails to save Nezuko. I know it sounds incredibly harsh, but this whole segment is already gloomy.
The tear-jerking begins with apologies to make from Genya to Sanemi before he disappears. It pains to me to realize they never got to recuperate their bond, even after they learned each other’s inner feelings. Too little, too late is the worst lesson to take. Sanemi begs not to take his brother away. That honestly hits home too hard. Genya’s final words are his blessings to him. He wants his brother to live; want him to be happy. This goes back to the theme of a brother in happiness. He thanked him one last time, because he is the nicest person in the world. Powerful.
Sanemi didn’t deserve this at all. He may started rough, but it’s no excuse to take away his livelihood. I felt absolutely sorry for him. What’s worse, he can’t bury his little brother with the body disappeared. It’s the worst outcome for the dead aside from forgotten. Himejima has been crying since the beginning, which is his trademark in a sense, but never did I feel the raw and powerful emotion he has here; hell-bent to kill Muzan. Whatever it takes.
As heartbreaking and depressing this chapter was, this is one of the best of the year. It’s not because characters have passed away. It’s the marvelous execution on the context of sibling love in tragedy. As the chapter’s title implied, it’s about the feelings from the elder and younger brother respectively. Tokito’s and Genya’s end were very emotional; both having their own distinctive narrative. This moment was what I feared the most, but it’s the one that was inevitable. Here’s the best of hopes to Genya and Tokito to be avenged by their beloved people…
Rest in Peace.

Fate/Zero is a gateway anime of the worst kind. It's a bad series, a clusterfuck of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive edgy faggotry and DARKNESS.

BnHA Chapter 283: I'M MARY POPPINS Y’ALL
Previously on BnHA: Everyone was all, “Tomura what do you have?” and Tomura was all,” a quirk bullet!” and they were all, “NO!!” He then threw the bullet at Aizawa, who ironically actually did have a knife, and since no one bothered to say “no!!” this time he proceeded to CHOP OFF HIS OWN LEG. Just, schwoop. Lopped it right off. Didn’t even fucking care. Anyway so then Tomura was all, “you know what who even needs quirk bullets” and somehow broke free from both Deku and Ryuukyuu to go claw off Aizawa’s face. Thankfully Todoroki “I've spent the past eight chapters puttering around waiting for the coolest moment to strike” Shouto finally decided to join the fray by impaling Tomura, and everyone was all, “ahaha, classic Shouto”, and Tomura was all, “don’t worry though I’m fine”, and it seems like he really is now, since he’s finally regenerated and all his wounds have healed again! The chapter ended with Gigantomachia stampeding towards Jakku, which is super terrible, but what else is fucking new.
Today on BnHA: The Gunga kids spend a few pages standing around letting all that trauma soak in nice and deep as Machia rampages on towards Jakku. Back in the Shigaraki Wastes, the heroes regroup, which mostly consists of the remaining conscious adults tearfully being all “you kids get out of here... save yourselves...” and the kids being all “YOU JUST SIT THERE AND CHILL, DAD” and “[EXPLETIVES]” and “I’M YOUNG AND FILLED WITH RIGHTEOUS SHOUNEN RAGE”, all of which is very entertaining to me and makes me very proud. Anyway so then Tomura’s body sort of explodes a bit, and he’s all, “what”, and then it finally sinks in that he might have popped out of the toaster early, so he tries to end the fight right there and then with another round of Decay. Except that Deku counters it by SPONTANEOUSLY LEARNING HOW TO FLY, which is probably SO CONFUSING for all the non-Gran-and-Kacchan people around, which is just one of the many things I love about it. And the other things I love about it are that it’s (1) THE MOST BADASS THING EVER, and (2) just, really fucking great. So yeah. Rage, Deku, rage.
OH NO MY BABIES
Tumblr media
don’t tell me. I’m not sure I want to know what it is they’re looking at. how many of the pros are fucking dead now ffffmg
also that is an extremely intriguing chapter title, though. 75? as in percent?? oh my god is something finally going to go fucking right for our heroes. or at least, you know, less wrong
OOOF
Tumblr media
dammit Momo he was supposed to go to sleep! WHAT THE HELL WAS ALL OF THAT MATH FOR, THEN. did he grow bigger, or did she just somehow miscalculate the dosage, or is he finally going to go night-night halfway to Jakku?
btw Momo I’m not actually mad at you, you’re still the only one who fucking did anything at all. if anyone tries to give you shit, just look them in the eye and ask them “okay and how many things did YOU do?”, and they’ll be like, “oh shit, none”, and you’ll be all “yeah that’s what I fucking thought” because YEAH
OH MY GOD SERO ANGST
Tumblr media
I have never seen Sero this badly shaken before. it’s somehow so shocking?? holy shit you guys, I know I’ve been saying for ages “lolo all these kids about to be traumatized af” but somehow it’s one thing to know it’s coming, and another to finally actually see it. oh god
anyway let’s just hope all of the grown-ups aren’t actually fucking dead. but based on all of the kids’ expressions, it really feels like a lot of them might be, and that’s just... ...
and they had to see it. right? is that what this is implying?? holy shit. they watched it all happen. that’s it, the rest of this arc is cancelled, please proceed directly to the emergency therapy arc right now
TOKO!!
Tumblr media
holy shit look at the size of that rock that fell on the medical tent. and DS pulling people out of the wreckage. it really feels like everywhere you turn this arc, the intrepid young scamps of U.A.’s first year hero class are the ones out here keeping things one step from total disaster
oh shit
Tumblr media
excuse the hell out of me young Momo but what the hell is up with this use of the word “dead” with the implied “like everyone else” hanging there at the end?? what is up with that. that’s a very bad sentence I don’t like that at ALL
and what the actual hell is this panel of FATGUM AND TAMAKI IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CARNAGE, TWO PEOPLE WHOSE NAMES I’M QUITE SURE ARE ON THIS CONTRACT OF “PEOPLE WHO AREN’T ALLOWED TO DIE” WHICH HORIKOSHI IMPLICITLY AGREED TO THE MOMENT I STARTED READING THE MANGA. BOY WHAT
JESUS MOTHER F. CHRIST
Tumblr media
THAT’S. THAT’S, UH
OH THANK FUCK
Tumblr media
I mean, I already knew they survived, though. so WHY AM I STILL SO FUCKING ANXIOUS. good grief
and in before Majestic fucking dies on the next page, having saved the children with his very last act. I fucking hate you Majestic, you blue-balling child-preserving magnificent wizard bastard
HE FRISBEED THEM TO SAFETY GAH
Tumblr media
WHY COULDN’T YOU DO THAT TO MACHIA THOUGH. BUT AT LEAST HE SAVED THE BABIES. TOO BAD HE’S FUCKING DEAD hahaha sob sob sob
is anyone still alive?? did the guys who were fighting off Snoopy Sno-Cone and RD back at the mansion at least make it out in one piece??
(ETA: from here on out all of these guys shall be referred to as Schrodinger's Heroes until further notice.)
so now Mineta is questioning whether or not their Smart Momo Plan even fucking did anything, which. same, Mineta, honestly. but it must have!! right?? ????
anyway so here’s some more panels of everyone dying do you want to see them. sure. why not
Tumblr media
can we get back to the Tomura fight now. I’ve had just about enough of this, I’d like to see some 75% business now before this turns into the most depressing chapter of all time
BOOOOOOO
Tumblr media
goddammit. well for now my money’s on Machia collapsing just as they make it back to Jakku. so Momo’s plan does eventually work, but the League still makes it back to Tomura thus ensuring more shenanigans can take place. goddamn, lol, just when I thought the arc was nearing its climax. feels like it just fucking respawned with a full life bar
also Toga is really looking... not great. I’m so scared for whoever she ends up fighting after this. OCHAKO MY SWEET BABY GIRL PLEASE WATCH OUT
WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE
Tumblr media
PLEASE ARREST HIM FASTER. holy fuck if you fucking screw this up and he gets rescued I SWEAR TO GOD
oh wait is he just here to provide more backstory on Gigantomachia
Tumblr media
GO BURNIN’, YOU GOT THIS. also, gonna be honest, at this point I really would not mind if Machia did a little less living for Tomura and a bit more dying
FINALLY!!!
Tumblr media
FKFKF Aizawa not looking too good oh god. and Deku looks like he’s about to spontaneously develop ALL OF HIS REMAINING QUIRKS JUST LIKE THAT ON THE SPOT, FUCK YOU TOMURA
oh my god DON’T GET DISTRACTED!!
Tumblr media
Shouto’s arrival is either about to make Endeavor more useless than ever, or suddenly a whole lot LESS useless, and right now it’s up in the air and I am excited but also scared
EXCUSES EXCUSES
Tumblr media
BLAH BLAH BLAH. “SORRY I’M LATE, I WAS SAVING PEOPLE’S LIVES,” Shouto lies through his teeth, clearly not aware that Tomura has a built in GPS and knows full well that Shouto was actually only a few feet behind Bakugou and Deku and so that explanation doesn’t fly at all. the real truth must be something so embarrassing that he’s ashamed to admit it. did you get lost. did you run into an NPC who wouldn’t let you pass until you had completed some sort of quest
THERE YOU ARE KACCHAN, I WAS WONDERING
Tumblr media
just as enraged as Deku! it’s almost like he just witnessed his sensei chopping off his own leg and subsequently almost being murdered or something
(ETA: actually lol I think he’s mad at Deku, for taking off earlier and leaving him behind with Gran. though there’s no law that says he can’t be mad about two things at once! anyway so do you guys think that being beaten to the punch by Deku here may perhaps frustrate this young man and contribute to his decision to return the favor at some point later on in this battle, perhaps with dire consequences? hmm.)
anyway so if you all are keeping up with the math, and I think you are, it seems like just about every one of the adult pros is either down for the count (Aizawa, Gran), or recovering (Endeavor, Ryuukyuu??), or Might As Well Not Even Be There (a certain TWO OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE STILL IN A TIME OUT AND HAD BETTER BE THINKING GOOD AND HARD ABOUT WHAT THEY’VE DONE. OR MORE PRECISELY, DID NOT DO OR EVEN ATTEMPT TO DO). anyway so all of that means that the only ones actually ready and raring to go here in Round 2 against the newly regenerated and POSSIBLY HAS HIS DECAY QUIRK BACK Shigaraki Tomura are... drum roll...!
okay but FUCK YOU GUYS though oh my god YOU’RE EVEN RUINING THE DRUM ROLL
Tumblr media
DID YOU NOT EVEN NOTICE HIS LEG BEFORE?!?!? holy -- can I -- can I please just slap them, I --
anyway so RockLockRock looks like he has something to say here. probably going to tell Deku to take Aizawa and run, as if Deku isn’t the fucking glue holding this entire operation together at this point now that Aizawa is KOed. can you believe these guys are so incompetent they’ve actually got me arguing in favor of the child soldiers now, what even
...fuck
Tumblr media
shit. that face. he’s ready to die to give them all a chance. he knows he wouldn’t last two seconds against Tomura and yet he’s willing to sacrifice it all. damn it RLR... okay fine your time out is done now, but I’m still calling your parents
unfortunately, you’ll never believe it, but Deku doesn’t seem all that inclined to listen to this man telling him to bail and save his own skin sob
Tumblr media
ngl though I am living for the Enraged Vengeance Deku we’ve been seeing in these last couple chapters. maybe now everyone will stop dismissing him as just a soft boi who always eats his vegetables and doesn’t swear, and remember that in truth he’s actually a mildly unhinged feral child with an infinite pain tolerance and a god-given talent for never listening to any life-prolonging advice that adults give him ever
oop don’t tell me he’s gonna do the Decay thing again, shit
Tumblr media
-- uh
Tumblr media
“eh?” lmao what the fuck. my boy's torso just opened up like a fucking door hinge and all he can say is “eh.” this fucking manga
like he’s seriously just calmly standing there trying to assess what the heck has gone wrong
Tumblr media
you really don’t feel pain do you. “haha lol what why is my arm falling off I thought I fucking ascended”
OH MY GOD
Tumblr media
IT’S OCTOBER THIRD. looool the fuck
Tomura. my sweet little S+ ranked death machine with an A rank in knowledge. who’s spent the past 15-20 minutes battling to the death with the number one fucking hero and all his pals. who all just HAPPENED to be there all ready and waiting to fight him the instant he woke up. Tomura. buddy. did it really only just occur to you that maybe something went wrong somewhere along the line. that maybe things were not, in fact going according to keikaku. that maybe the heroes didn’t just sit around waiting for you to finish cooking in your villain bake oven. like please forgive my impudence but TOMURA ARE YOU STUPID, is what I’m saying, I guess. but gently
(ETA: SHIGARAKI TOMURA, WHOSE ARM IS CURRENTLY DANGLING BY A THREAD: “hold up lol what day is it.”)
I really like how Deku’s just crying nonstop this entire time though. but like, you know. crying with RAGE
Tumblr media
lol and he’s figured it out as well, and I fucking love the connection his mind made, look at this
Tumblr media
sudden feelings of solidarity. “WE’RE NOT SO DIFFERENT, YOU AND I” lmao
AHH MIRKO
Tumblr media
how does she still have two legs?? Horikoshi I can’t believe you forgot how many legs your own favorite character has. but anyways yes this has been your friendly reminder that Mirko saved EVERYONE and should have a battleship named after her
okay NOW he’s doing the thing
Tumblr media
good job Tomura you finally got them!! good thing none of them can fly, or Float. RIGHT, DEKU
AHAHAHAHAHA YESSSSS
Tumblr media
YOU LOVE TO SEE IT. AND A BLACKWHIP/FLOAT COMBO, TOO! TOMURA, YOU WERE SAYING??
(ETA: he even grabbed Kacchan too. “I can fly by myself!” YOU SHUSH MISTER.)
(ETA 2: and what I also love about this is that we know the SIXQUIRKS are seemingly in tune with Deku’s emotions, so it honestly makes perfect sense that in the heat of the moment with Tomura threatening to kill all these people that he cares about, the quirk just basically acts on his instinct to save and doesn’t stop to ask questions. we’re saving everyone, no buts. and he even activates Float at long last, acting on that same instinct. honestly Kacchan had the exact right idea the whole time, all the way back in chapter 217. “it’ll activate when he’s in trouble, right?” exactly.)
NO GRAN STOP NO ONE ASKED FOR THESE FEELS
Tumblr media
OH MY GOD
Tumblr media
NEVER HAVE I STANNED THIS BOY SO HARD. HOT DAMN
he’s so fucking mad. omg??! omg
okay so I’m gonna try my best to explain why I love this so much lol. all right. so the thing is, it’s actually so rare for Deku to actually take the reins like this. even though he’s the main character, even though he’s All Might’s heir, his personality is such that he genuinely doesn’t mind being in the backseat and is perfectly content to share the spotlight with others, or even relinquish it completely. BnHA has had... how many arcs so far? hold up let me check
-- okay I just checked and it’s 18. so, 18 arcs. and out of all those arcs, Deku has had a solo fight in approximately... five of them. and two of those fights were against Bakugou and Todoroki, respectively, so he was still sharing the spotlight even then. aside from that, he’s fought Muscular, Gentle, and Overhaul (oh, and Shinsou, I guess). that’s it! and it’s been almost 300 chapters! and again, he’s the main character. in a shounen manga. like seriously though, that is wild
and so seeing him here like this on the last page, ready to throw hands with Tomura, presumably while using Blackwhip as some sort of physical barrier to coat his attacks and prevent Tomura from trying any more Decay shenanigans with him? dude. I FELT THAT HYPE. it’s just a really effective way of keeping me from getting Main Character Fatigue like I might get in most other shounen series. because Deku doesn’t get the spotlight all that often in comparison, it still feels fresh to me, especially now with him actually going up against the Big Bad. just, idk what else to say except “hell yeah” lol
anyway, so I don’t even know how long it’s gonna last, and I expect that Kacchan and Shouto aren’t going to be content to just sit back and let Deku have all the glory either (Kacchan in particular is probably frothing at the mouth already), so in all likelihood it’s probably going to be more of a 3-on-1 than a 1-on-1. and it’s also very likely to end with Tomura gaining the upper hand and trying to take OFA! and so in truth this is a very fleeting moment of triumph, and the most premature of celebrations! but even so... damn. and also I just love seeing shounen kids lose their damn minds and explode with angry determination. and I especially love seeing it with Deku, because I love the reminder that beneath that sweet, unassuming nerdy exterior lies a core of fucking steel. that look in his eyes, though. TOMURA ARE YOU SCARED. you should be a little scared, lmao
anyway. so that’s the chapter! and I’m really glad we ended on this note, not just because Deku is a badass, but also because like I was saying earlier, this was about as bad a situation as the good guys have ever been in, and I felt like the manga was starting to lose that feeling of hope that still needs to be there at its core even when things are at their darkest. idk, I feel like we needed this. Tomura got a chance to catch his breath in the last chapter, and now it’s the heroes’ turn. whew

I like reading magical girl manga, but unfortunately I’m not able to find that many. So I thought I’d check what else authors for well known magical girl manga have been up to outside that particular story. Mostly counting larger/more notable stories, I’m not going through every one short or series attempt that was canned after one volume.
Naoko Takeuchi (Sailor Moon, 1991-1997)
I thought she had done practically no manga after Sailor Moon ended, but it turns out I was wrong and she does have some very short works until the early 2000s (but after that I couldn’t find anything else form her other than work different Sailor Moon projects). However most of the stuff that’s listed for her is just one shots or one or two volumes at most, and nobody ever speaks of them. The only one I know is PQ Angels (1997), which is about two alien girls who try to live as schoolgirls and are able to transform into cockroaches, but it was pretty forgettable and was apparently discontinued because of Kodansha losing some pages of it.
Tumblr media
Mia Ikumi (The artist for Tokyo Mew Mew, 2000-2002)
Has made only one longer work after TMM, Koi Cupid (2005-2008), which seems to be about 3 trainee cupids trying to become full-fledged angels. Fantasy, but doesn’t look like it fits in my definition of magical girls. Also only one volume has been published in English.
Tumblr media
The TMM Writer, Reiko Yoshida, has been involved with writing anime starting from 1989 and continuing even today (Wikipedia lists her role as ‘script’, ‘script supervisor’ or ‘screenplay’ in works like Dragon Ball Z, Digimon Adventure, Angelic Layer, Sugar Sugar Rune, K-ON!, Bakuman, Silent Voice and Violet Evergarden). Couldn’t find any notable manga work from her outside writing TMM.
Moyoco Anno (Sugar Sugar Rune, 2003-2007)
My favourite magical girl manga! And unlike Ikumi, Anno has produced plenty of manga after Sugar Sugar Run too, but unfortunately none of it is magical girls. Or for girls in general either; most of her other work seems to be aimed at grown up readers, such as Hataraki Man (2004-2009), Happy Mania (1996-2001) and In Clothes Called Fat (1997), which feature 20-something women who struggle with various issues in their life. Sakuran (2001-2003), Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen (2013-2018) and Buffalo 5 Girls (2013) are about prostitution. Then there’s Flowers and Bees (2000-2003), Jelly in the Merry-Go-Round (1997-?) and Jelly Beans (1999-2002) which are about fashion or modeling which work with Anno’s strengths, since she’s amazing at designing clothes.
Tumblr media
Moonlight Himejion (2007-?) is a little closer to what I’m looking for since it’s at least fantasy, but it seems to have been discontinued after one volume, but overall I could find very few works that had any fantasy elements. Which is a real shame since I’d love to see more fabulous magic outfit designs similar to Sugar Sugar Rune from Anno.
Peach-pit (Shugo Chara!, 2005-2010)
The duo behind Rozen Maiden (2002-2007) and its au stories, spin-offs and whatnot. Other than the story about fighting dolls which was pretty big back in its day they also have DearS (2001-2005), which looks like an ecchi magical girlfriend series to me, Zombie-Loan (2002-2011), which is a horror story involving you know what, and Kingyozaka Noboru (2012-2015), which has a teen girl helping a grade schooler (??? the MAL description is very unhelpful here), Wandering Wonder World (2014-2017) which is a shounen story about demons in an amusement park. Overall like with Anno their other works seem to be aimed at an older audiences and the colourful Shugo Chara! is more like an anomaly among their other titles.
Tumblr media
Arina Tanemura
Has a lot of fantasy works with girls and magic, but I don’t count them all as magical girl series; for example I see Fullmoon o Sagashite as an idol story with fantasy elements (or maybe a fantasy story with idol elements?) rather than a magical girl one. Or maybe it’s just that I don’t care much for her works so I don’t have a lot of interest to feature them on this blog. Either way she has stuff like Time Stranger Kyoko (2000-2001), a short series that was clearly rushed to end about a princess who needs to gather 11 magic people to wake up her sleeping twin sister from an enchanted sleep, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (1997-2000) which is about a magical girl phantom thief, and The Legend of Princess Sakura (2008-2012) which is about the moon princess Kaguya’s descendant in historical Japan. Who I probably should count as a magical girl, she even has a henshin, but honestly I remember next to nothing of the first volume. Meanwhile 31☆Idream (2013-) turns the “little girl must transform into an older version of herself to become a teen idol” thing around with a 31-year-old woman who has to revert back in age to do the same.
Tumblr media
Out of her major works only the hilariously awful (fite me) Gentlemen’s Alliance Cross (2004-2008) doesn’t have any fantasy elements and is instead about rich kids’ teen drama.
Pink Hanamori (The artist for Mermaid Melody, 2002-2005)
Only has 3 other works listed on MAL: A Princess Knight (the Tezuka one)  sequel (2008-2009), Yume Yume You You (2005-2007), a story about a girl living in her sister’s shadow discovering another world in a mirror, and My Fiancé is a Monster!? (2007-2008), which looks like a supernatural romantic comedy. Nothing after 2009.
Tumblr media
Like with TMM’s case the writer Michiko Yokote has worked on a billion anime projects (credited as ‘script’, ‘screenplay’ or ‘series compositor’), such as .hack, Binan Koukou Chikyuu Boueibu LOVE!, Gintama and Princess Tutu, but has no other manga listed other than a .hack adaptation.
CLAMP
Everyone knows CLAMP, and they have so many well known works that they don’t really belong to a “minor works from one-hit-wonder mangaka” list, but a magical manga list without even mentioning CLAMP would be badly incomplete so here they are anyway. And they are actively bringing out new magical girl manga to the world with the ongoing Clear Card arc of Cardcaptor Sakura, a sad rarity on this list! And then they of course also have Magic Knight Rayearth, and you can see Sakura and company in their massive multiverse crossover thing Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle (+xxxHolic). Also CLAMP’s absurdly incredible outfit catalogue is worth mentioning and especially Sakura’s wardrobe is such a gift to the world.
Tumblr media
Other works from CLAMP include Angelic Layer, Chobits, Clover, Gate 7 and Kobato. A lot of their stuff has fantasy elements.
It appears that in the end my search for new magical girl manga was unsuccessful at least when it comes to these old veterans, so I must look elsewhere. I am able to find short trope-y otaku stuff, but I’d like a more straightforward story like TMM or Shugo Chara. What do the kids read nowadays? What is the TMM of today? Is great stuff being produced but just not translated to us Western barbarians, or do plenty of English versions exist but I’m just too lazy and inept to find it? Or are magical girls out of fashion and little girls only want to be idols?
