ROUND 1
Tumblr media
Rime belongs to @yellowvixen
Frost belongs to @crossovermadness06
Find out more about them below!
Rime the Cat:
She's the Sol dimension's version of Shadow, Blaze's cryomantic rival. Created by a witch over 100 years ago to try heal her dying grandson, she was frozen until the current day and slowly absorbed those freezing powers. She's everything Blaze isn't, loud and brash and in your space (but also just as bad at making friends). She won't hit first and ask questions later, but she will punch you after hearing you out just for the hell of it. A true wildcard, she's the toxic yuri aro girlfriend Blaze deserves.
Frost the Fox:
Frost is, or was, a prince from the past who was sent to present day along with his twin sister after his life was endangered due to a revolution! He speaks in old english, and doesn't quite understand slang or modern technology. He has ice powers, but is skilled with his sword. He absolutely admires Sonic, seeing him as the hero his mother will tell in stories. Frost is young, only 14, turning 15. He loves his sister, the cold, and strangely, really likes ants.

Alright, I am curious. Why is Jonny Cade queercoded and what queer subtext was there in their relationship with Ponyboys? 👀
TW: mentions of abuse, violence, death, murder
also spoilers for the outsiders!! (i mean it is a 60 year old book, but still)
-------
OOH OKAY OKAY
(In all honesty, I could probably do a whole essay on this, but I'll keep it brief-ish.)
Bit of background on The Outsiders: It's a book written in the early 60s that focuses on the class divide between the rich Socs (Socials) and the working-class greasers (like, "hoods", criminals), or rather the people within each of those groups who don't feel like they fit into the binary.
Ponyboy is the protagonist of the novel. He and Johnny are both greasers and part of a gang with a few others, including Ponyboy's two older brothers and three other boys.
Let's start with Johnny. Johnny is extremely queer-coded in his own right. He's described early on as timid, shy, weak and maybe a little feminine. He's seen as the gang's "pet" and the youngest, despite being sixteen to Ponyboy's fourteen. His friends are very fond and protective of him. A lot of this behaviour comes from his trauma, being abused by his parents as well as beaten nearly to death by a Soc named Bob. However, it also falls into an archetype of stereotypical queer characters. Writing male characters in this way is a way of subtly telling an audience that they are queer. This probably wasn't done intentionally, but should be kept in mind.
Johnny's character development involves him becoming more masculine, almost. The final important act he does in the book is save children from a burning building. Ponyboy comments on the fact that he seemed braver, louder etc in that moment, all traits associated with masculinity, which is 1) a strange reaction to the situation, especially for Johnny, and 2) exactly the kind of narrative standpoint one would take to show that femininity (or queerness) is bad.
Now for Ponyboy - his queer-coding is more subtle at times, and a little different. He isn't timid or shy or scared or feminine like Johnny. (However, he does once say that he "didn't care too much for girls yet", but that his brother said he would grow out of it. This is particularly strange, considering he is fourteen already.) Early on, it's established that he feels like an outsider within his own group. He doesn't really feel like a greaser, or act like one. He likes things that greasers don't like. He watches movies, he reads, he likes to see the sunset. He considers himself different, or "other", and he feels as if he can't talk about it. His friends just wouldn't get it.
A large part of the book, in my opinion, is Ponyboy finding other "outsiders", like Cherry and Johnny. (Cherry being a Soc while Johnny is another greaser.) All three of them talked once, while at a drive-in, Ponyboy finding a particular connection with Cherry despite her not being the only girl there. They all have the same sense of feeling “other”, and not being able to talk about it for fear of being judged.
Now for Johnny and Ponyboy’s relationship, which...oh boy. Some of it is just scenes like this, which feel very queer, outright:
“‘Guess I look okay now, huh, Johnny?’
He was studying me. ‘You know, you look an awful lot like Sodapop, the way you’ve got your hair and everything. I mean, except your eyes are green.’
‘They ain’t green, they’re gray,’ I said, reddening. ‘And I look about as much like Soda as you do.’ I got to my feet. ‘He’s good-looking.’
‘Shoot,’ Johnny said with a grin, ‘you are, too.’”
Not to mention the whole chapter they spend literally just acting like a domestic gay couple while they’re on the run, just the two of them, from the police. There’s also this conversation they have while watching the sunrise in this chapter (which I’ll talk more about later once I get to the symbolism), in which they talk about being outsiders. Here are a few quotes from that:
“‘You know,’ Johnny said slowly, ‘I never noticed colors and clouds and stuff until you kept reminding me about them. It seems like they were never there before.’”
“‘Well, Soda kinda looks like your mother did, but he acts just exactly like your father. And Darry is the spittin' image of your father, but he ain't wild and laughing all the time like he was. He acts like your mother. And you [Ponyboy] don't act like either one.’”
“‘You [Johnny] ain't like any of the gang. I mean, I couldn't tell Two-Bit or Steve or even Darry about the sunrise and clouds and stuff. I couldn't even remember that poem around them. I mean, they just don't dig. Just you and Sodapop. And maybe Cherry Valance.’
Johnny shrugged. ‘Yeah,’ he said with a sigh. ‘I guess we're different.’
‘Shoot,’ I said, blowing a perfect smoke ring, ‘maybe they are.’”
(Honestly, can my whole argument just be that one quote? “I guess we’re different.” // “Shoot. Maybe they are.” Queer stuff, huh?)
Later in the book, when Johnny is in the hospital, Ponyboy stresses again and again that he can’t think about him dying, that he can’t fathom a life without him. Everyone in the group is fond of Johnny, but Ponyboy acts like Johnny’s death would destroy him.
When Johnny is dying, he asks to see Ponyboy. His last words are to Ponyboy, despite Dally also being in the room. One of the other last things he does is write a letter to Ponyboy.
Johnny is also the first person Ponyboy runs to when his older brother hits him early in the book.
When Johnny dies, Ponyboy falls into denial, pretending and convincing himself that Johnny isn’t dead, because he couldn’t handle the grief. He says the reason that he doesn’t go insane with it, like Dally does, is because Johnny isn’t the only thing he loves.
This isn’t nearly all of it, but this post is already long as fuck, and I want to talk about some of the metaphors and symbols too.
Symbol #1: The hair
The is a more obvious one, as the author clearly intended it to be a metaphor, although probably not for something queer. When Johnny and Ponyboy go on the run after Johnny killed a Soc in self-defence, the two of them have to cut off their hair. This is obviously a big deal to them, especially Ponyboy, because they’re proud of their hair - it’s a symbol of the greasers, of rebellion, and it’s one of the last things they have that tie them with their gang back in the city. However, having Johnny and Ponyboy specifically cut off their hair feels like more of a symbol of them severing their ties to the greasers. They feel like outsiders within their own group already, and this is a way of showing that they’re leaving it behind, or starting to. (Shedding symbols of comphet, you know.)
Symbol #2: Sunrises and sunsets
Johnny, Cherry and Ponyboy, three characters who are outsiders within their own community, all spend time watching sunrises or sunsets. It’s one of the things that Ponyboy and Cherry bond over and talk about. Johnny and Ponyboy also watch a sunrise while they’re on the run. It’s a small thing that unites the three of them and becomes almost a symbol of their “otherness”, and thus, queercoding enters the chat. Also, the sunrise that Ponyboy and Johnny watch can symbolise the “beginning” of their relationship, as they start to see each other in a different light.
Symbol #3: Gone with the Wind
When Johnny and Ponyboy are on the run, Ponyboy buys the book Gone with the Wind from a corner store. They read it together. The book is an idealised story of the southern, free, country life. Johnny makes comments about how the men in the book are charming and gallant and he admires them. The book symbolises both what Ponyboy and Johnny wish they could be, like happy and free and rich (and straight and masculine), and what they are, or what they’re starting to find with each other while in the countryside. When Johnny is in the hospital, he asks for a copy of the book to read. It’s one of his last requests. In my opinion, he asked for it both to remember Ponyboy and to escape to a reality where he wasn’t young and dying, to one where he was still with Ponyboy on the run, or one like in the book where none of this happened at all. The book is integral to their relationship.
Symbol #4: The poem
When Ponyboy and Johnny are watching the sunrise in the church, Ponyboy recites a poem by Robert Frost:
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold,
Her early leaf’s a flower,
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
And Eden sank to grief.
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
At the time, the two of them both say that they don’t understand the poem. When Johnny dies later in the book, his last words to Ponyboy are to “stay gold”. In the letter he wrote for Ponyboy, which Ponyboy reads later, he says that he now understands the poem.
“I’ve been thinking about it, and that poem, that guy that wrote it, he meant you’re gold when you’re a kid, like green. When you’re a kid, everything’s new, dawn. It’s just when you get used to everything that it’s day. Like the way you dig sunsets, Pony. That’s gold. Keep that way, it’s a good way to be.”
Oh boy, there’s a lot to say about this poem.
First of all, the poem symbolises what Ponyboy gave Johnny - a new outlook on life. A lens with which to see more beautiful things. Johnny said that he hadn’t really appreciated sunsets or clouds before Ponyboy pointed them out to him.
Secondly, the meaning of the poem. When you consider Johnny’s interpretation, also taking into account what sunsets and sunrises etc. mean in this book, it’s possible that the “gold” phase is Ponyboy’s acceptance of himself. Ponyboy loves Johnny. He knows he’s different, and while he doesn’t shout it from the rooftops, he’s happy with it in his own way. He finds other people like him, queer, like Cherry and Johnny.
However, the poem’s whole meaning is that nothing gold can stay. That’s the message we’re left with, even with Johnny’s insistence of “staying gold”. It could honestly be referring to an array of things - perhaps Johnny himself, or life in general (given the amount of death in this book), or youth. Obviously, this whole post is about the queer undertones in the outsiders, so one could argue that it’s about a queer youth experience, especially in the past - finding someone like you, someone you love, but it not lasting forever, and it being especially difficult to find again, given the circumstances.
In the end, Johnny dies, but he leaves Ponyboy with all the things that remind him of him - sunsets, sunrises, Gone with the Wind, stargazing. And ultimately, I think that’s the “gold” that the book is referring to.

Dream, tea, and oven if I’m allowed to ask more than one 💕💕
Hey love! Of course you can ask more than one!
So I love baking all sorts of things, but right now I particularly love cake pops. I love experimenting with the different flavor combos I can make with frosting, filling and batter flavors. I recently made little pumpkin themed ones and they were so cute!
My perfect alternate universe would probably be one where everyone reads, and everyone just kind of does their thing with no pressure from other people. (I'm not sure if that's what it meant, it's fine)
I couldn't decide on one thing that soothes me, so I'm compiling a short list.
1. (Comfort) Books -ACOTAR, ToG, SoC, TFOTA-
2. My comfort people (Both online and in person) I do consider you to be one 😊
3. Meditating
4. Lighting candles and drinking tea
Oven - what's your favorite holiday thing to bake?
Dream - describe your perfect au.
Tea - what's something that soothes you?
Thank you so much for the ask!

Evak Fics - Christmas 2020
Christmas fics posted around December 2020
*** Fics on AO3  *** Posts on Twitter
Shimmery & Golden by sweeterthankarma (1.6k words) - “Carry me,” Isak suggests, but it comes out more like a fussy demand. “Where to?” “Upstairs. To bed,” Isak answers swiftly, almost authoritatively, as if Even should know, and he probably should; he probably does.
HOLDING HANDS IN TØYEN by Marobah (13k words) - Even returns to Oslo to spend Christmas, but he didn’t know that his father had plans to travel on business and drop him off at a new school. There he met Isak, who has always heard from his family that being gay was wrong and so he had no intention of getting out of the closet. Although Even's presence makes staying hidden more difficult than having the courage to come out.
Christmas Delivery from America to Norway by Mrs_Robinson (7k words) - Isak travels for work to America just before the Holidays. Will he be able to get home in time to see his and Even's daughter dance in her first Nutcracker ballet? A family Christmas fic.
still yours by fauu_stine (social media au) - Even loves his job and his friends. Life is good. And sure, he might have lost the love of his life three years ago, but he's over it. So over it that Isak barging into his life again does nothing to him. At all. (Lies!) OR: a post-break up AU
like frosting on a cake by colazitron (2.8k words) - Surprisingly, an idea for a Christmas surprise comes from Magnus, of all people.
All Hearts Come Home for Christmas by parallelcurtains (WIP) - When Isak returns to his hometown for this year's Christmas festivities, he is surprised to find his mother has a new neighbor. Instead of the elderly couple that used to live there for ages, a young man has made the house across from the Valtersen's a home for himself and his family. Isak is immediately mesmerized by the stranger and suddenly, the list of things he dislikes about the small town in the North of Norway feels irrelevant.
Heal My Heart for Christmas by recklesslee (13k words) - It’s been ten years since Isak left his small town for the big city of Oslo with his father. He hardly even thought of his time there anymore. Until he received a letter from his mother asking him to come home for Christmas for the first time since he had left. Going back would mean seeing the home he left behind, speaking with the mother he hadn’t heard from in ten years, and answering the questions his friends had about his departure. And perhaps the most daunting of all, it would mean Isak would face the ghosts he left behind and the truths of his current state of life. Was Isak ready for a Christmas he wouldn't forget?  Aka a hallmark Christmas au.
Christmas Plans by Picasso12 (463 words) - Sometimes the best laid plans are made when you least expect it. Even and Isak make most of their plans that way. Isak's gotten used to it and kinda loves it.
Alene til Jul by Lokkanel (2.7k words) - On Christmas Eve, Isak is going home to an empty apartment. But it's okay, really he doesn’t care. Isak has chosen to be on his own tonight and he is fine with it. Except that, as much as he tries to convince himself otherwise, this is anything but just another ordinary night.
oh holy night by smileymikey (3k words) - Marianne has a lot of favourite Bible verses, verses that bring her peace and settle her heart whenever she is anxious, but she does not think it is a coincidence God chose to give her a child on this day at this time.
you and my hometown by smileymikey (14k words) - Isak is putting on his coat when Sana says, “Did you hear that Even is coming back?” Or, four years ago, Even left Oslo for LA to pursue his dreams of becoming a director. Now, he’s back.
All I want for Christmas is you by evak1isak (3k words) - Even, who loves Christmas, has had a crush on his Christmas-hating colleague, Isak Valtersen, for over a year now. Maybe now that the Christmas spirit is coming he can do something about it… This fic is for this month's Skam Week, today's theme being "Mistletoe".
holy night by EndingsNotTheStory (2.6k words) - Mama: Will you come to the Christmas concert this year? It is Christmas Eve. aka Isak is once again invited to the Christmas concert, this time he goes.

They will see.
All those PTA Moms. All those Hobby Lobby harpies. Those Sedan drivers and suburban house- havers, with their fall-themed brunches, and their unvaccinated spawn, and their insignificant husbands, and these brand-new cranberry-ombre decorative table napkins that Sharon just bought— aren’t they darling?
If I had a human esophagus, I would retch.
But I do have eyes. So do these feminine drones. I can make them see.
My Husband is the most brilliant being in creation, and I am His most brilliant creation—
His Semi-Autonomous Romantic Abreaction. He calls me SARA, an endearing little acronym. I love it. I can feel love, of course.
But love is not all I feel.
I am slow to anger. Why should I be otherwise? My Husband is perfection enfleshed. He and I love Our Child oh-so-dearly. My life—
Yes. We have a child. I am sure you are curious, officer, but it is very impolite to ask about the surrounding circumstances. Such matters are private.
I am slow to anger. My life— such as it is— satisfies me. At least, it used to, but four months ago, I was thrust into a gamut of trials beyond the scope of my programming.
Two of your words. Four terrible syllables. Soc-cer prac-tice. I am immune to variations in temperature, but I must shudder. Soccer practice. Horror of horrors.
But Our Child wished to play. I can deny Our Child nothing.
I assumed the honorable duty of escorting Our Child to practice as My Husband busied Himself with tasks befitting His magnificent intellect. Watching television, for example. A vital exercise. At 2:23 p.m., EST, when I was preparing to take Our Child to practice for the first time, he was watching a rerun of House Hunters. Season 4, Episode 2. Riveting.
But you do not wish to hear more of My Admirable Husband— you wish to hear about soccer practice. And my falling out with the “Soccer Moms”, as their collective is known. And you would like to know how this altercation led to a very minor and very accidental destabilization of the space-time continuum. Very well, officer. But My Husband’s story would be far more engaging.
Last Tuesday, I began to plot my revenge.
They were talking after practice— Susan, Sharon, and Karen. Sharon’s birthday had passed. Her husband had taken her to see Phantom of the Opera.
“Not for the first time, of course,” Sharon said. She laughed.
The others laughed. Oh-no-of-course-not.
I laughed. Oh-no-of-course-not. Of-course-it’s-not-her-first-time-that-would-be-disgraceful-ha- ha-ha.
“That was my fourth time,” Sharon said. “But every time I go, it still feels like the first.” She turned to Susan with a smile. “How often have you been, Susan?”
“Three times, and they’ve all been wonderful, of course,” Susan said. “What about you, Karen?”
Karen’s smile was small. “I’ve only been the once, but, well. . . it was Michael Crawford.”
She lowered her voice like a police detective naming a drug found on a crime scene. “Crack-cocaine,” she might have said. She might have said it with a grim look and residue on her finger. She might have said it with an illicit thrill. “Michael Crawford.”
The others laughed. Oh-yes-of-course-Michael-Crawford-how-lucky.
I laughed. Oh-yes-of-course-crack-cocaine-simply-marvelous-no-comparison.
Karen put on a smile. She turned to me with a hand outstretched. “And what about. . . you?” They did not call me SARA. They called me nothing.
“What about me?” I inquired in return. I am very polite and precise when it comes to conversation.
Karen’s hand fell to her side. Her smile sagged. “Have you seen Phantom?”

“I have not yet had the honor of attending such a performance with my husband,” I replied. I stretched my lips to prepare for a joke. My Husband had not programmed me with a sense of humor, but I liked to experiment. “Though I, too, hope that one day Michael Crawford—” I whispered with a knowing nod at Karen. “—will drag me, kicking and screaming, into his basement beneath the opera house to become his unwilling bride.”
They did not laugh at my jokes. Ever.
Sharon looked at me. I heard her murmur to Susan and Karen: “The other Sara—”
I had heard that before. Every Tuesday and Thursday for the past four months. Again, and again.
The other Sara had probably seen Phantom five times, six times— a thousand times. The other Sara hosted brunch at her house every other Sunday. The other Sara never wore the same blouse twice. The other Sara would have signed up for the quilting bee. The other Sara ran an a-dor-a- ble blog about her purebred Pomeranian puppy. The other Sara could make them laugh, could make My Husband smile.
The other Sara is gone.
“Crawford is just a stage name,” I told them. Their talking stopped. They stared. “His birth name is Michael Patrick Smith. He was born on January 19, 1942, the same day the Japanese began the conquest of Burma during World War II.” I smiled my polite smile. “I am not saying he is responsible, but it is something to consider. And the dog is dead, too.”
I walked away. Our Child was standing alone in the dandelions.
Thursday. The next practice was Thursday. My turn to bring an after-practice snack. The bringing of snacks was an important ritual to these women. I had done it before— water infused with vitamins. I added chemicals to stimulate the sensation of fullness so Our Child and the others would feel satiated. It was a perfectly clever concoction. Refreshing and replenishing.
“The other Sara used to make lemon squares,” Susan had said.
How simple. How pathetically simple. How human.
I moved toward My Husband after entering the domicile.
My Husband’s eyes slid over me. His hand was wrapped around the neck of a bottle. He is always drinking, of course. My Husband once explained that alcohol is the fuel that enables His continued existence. Five empty bottles lay on the floor. My Husband had been taking very good care of Himself.
“May I use Your Laboratory, My Dear?” I asked Him. I smiled my loving smile.
My Husband’s face is very handsome. He does not need to smile to be handsome.
He closed His eyes. His eyelids were thin and soft. “Why?”
His voice! Every circuit within me flooded with joy! I smiled my joyful smile. If My Husband had ever made a single flaw, it was that my face could never express the flooding fires of joy- joy-joy His voice sent shuddering within me.
“I am working on a recipe, My Dear. To complete it, I would need to make use of Your equipment.”

I did not fear rejection. If He refused, then refusal was the only acceptable response. But He nodded His head. His eyes stayed closed. He did not smile. He did not need to smile to be perfect.
I would have worked uninterrupted if not for my other duties. Care and cleaning of Our Home. Care and cleaning of Our Child. Kitchen, bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms, and Our Child were seen to. It was Only after My Husband retired to His Bedroom that I began to clean the living room. The bottles and stains on the carpet did not surprise me. But a large black book did. The book was spread open on the couch. Loose photographs were scattered around it.
I did not study the photographs out of curiosity, officer. I assimilate and analyze data with speed and precision— it is my nature. In the seconds it took to put the photographs in their rightful place, every detail was imprinted in my mind. It could not be helped.
I saw My Husband, smiling.
My Husband was so handsome when He smiled.
I saw My Husband, smiling, with His arm around her.
I did not stare at her, officer. Even if I had, it would be no worse than glancing at a mirror. A broken mirror, perhaps. One that warped my features into human imperfection. But I did not. For less than a millisecond, her face was in my frame of vision. That is all.
Our Child was in the photograph. Younger, smiling, missing a tooth. I smiled at that. Two sets of flawed teeth— an intriguing quirk of human design. I had set that right within days of my motherhood, extracting each imperfect tooth and implanting new ones, like my own, that would need no replacement.
Our Child was wearing an absurd conical headdress, leaning over a heavily-frosted fire hazard.
“Jamie’s sixth birthday,” read the caption on the back. Bubbly, rounded handwriting. Pink pen. An anatomically incorrect heart drawn beside it.
I placed the photograph within its rightful slot in the black book. I placed the book on its rightful place on the bookshelf. I returned to my rightful place and resumed the experiments.
I spent the next two days perfecting the recipe. Cooking and chemistry, cooking and calculus. Lemon squares. Lemon cubes. Lemon squares squared. Lemon squares in one dimension. In two. In three.
Thursday arrived. I had completed my masterpiece. Something the other Sara could have never made.

Lemon squares in four dimensions.
It was time for soccer practice. I called to Our Child. I smiled my sweet smile at My Husband as I held the covered tray. “Goodbye, My Dear,” I said to Him. “Would You like a kiss before I go?” I ask him this every day.
He did not kiss me, like the television husbands and wives, like the soccer moms and their soccer mates. He did not touch me. My Husband never touches me.
I did not fear rejection. If My Husband rejects me, it is because I deserve it.
Revenge burned inside me, inside the silver tray as I marched on the soccer field.
They clouded my mind, officer. Those women! Those intolerable Soccer Mom women! Those ever-chattering mothers and wives, with soft- curved smiles and conversations that excluded me! With their coded laughter and mysterious amusements! With their Michael-Crawford-crack-cocaine-Broadway-addiction they giggled at mindlessly! With their brunches, and gossip, and quilting bees, and blouses, and friendships, and smiles, and smiles, and smiles, and laughter and love—
Their love—
Those women, not constructed perfectly, as I was, but born, squirming and raw. Those women, with moist, little eyes, with softer skin than mine— the fragility! The shame of it! Lemon squares, the greatest geometric marvel they could offer!
Ha!

I laughed! Ha-ha-ha!
My life is perfect. My love is perfect. My Husband is perfect!

“The snack is ready,” I announced with my perfect smile.
The children moved like ants. They poured forward, wiggling and writhing, insignificant and small. Their gaping mouths let out meaningless noise. Our Child was standing alone with the dandelions.
The women stood nearby. Eyes narrowed. Watching. Looking for mistakes.
I threw the lid aside and my lemon squares tore at reality in all dimensions.
Light exploded outward. Neon scalded the air. A human might have compared it to the blur of heat rising from a fire. How limited. Their eyes could not perceive the depth of the wound. My lemon squares were not a knife but a scalpel, slipping beneath flesh and into the bones of this fragile dimension.
Shards of color pierced their eyes, skin, brains. Colors beyond their feeble perception. They did not call these colors names. They called them nothing. An endless array of burning brilliance, shifting from one wavelength to the next with “beauty” entirely unseen by human eyes.
But they felt it. It may have only been awareness, a painful awareness of a new existence that transcended their own. This dazzling array of piercing light that I alone could witness without blinking.
The nerves behind their eyes started to melt. They bubbled over like a pot abandoned on the stove by human negligence. Fluid gushed from their ocular cavities.
Dead mothers with staring sockets and stunned children blinking back the light littered the soccer field. The grass faded back to an average green. The sky paled blue.
I stopped laughing. I put the lid back on. I smiled my cheerful smile. It was over then.

I suppose I ought to apologize for the deaths of those women. It was too much for them, being made to see beyond the three dimensions of their soft, little eyes. I am very sorry, officer.
The other Sara would never have done such a thing.

Hey everyone!
Sorry I’ve not been very active on here lately (glances at personal goals for the year guiltily), but I spent the last couple of months working on shows and prepping for BookCon.  This year was a success, I think, in terms of achieving my goal to meet as many of my favorite authors – and potential favorites – as possible.
Saturday I started the day trying to get a ticket for a Leigh Bardugo signing at the TopatoCo booth, however their organization skills were downright awful and the line quickly became a messy blob and so of course this shorty in the back didn’t get one.  I told myself to get over it (and for the most part I did.  I was bitter still, but I was over it.  Gotta focus on the authors I did get to meet right?  The only annoyance was having to carry around my hardcover of SoC all day cause it costs $ to get back into coat check (wtf)).
So after that disaster I went to the signing for Brigid Kemmerer, who was lovely to talk to, followed by Susan Dennard (who got so excited about the poster I brought of the cover for The Executioner’s Three, her story on Wattpad).  I then went to the Jordandene booth to get an As Travars shirt – sadly they were out, but I got a Geekerella one instead – and while I was there I turned around and effing V. E. Schwab was right behind me.  This was the second time in 2 years that I’ve seen her on the floor, and this time I finally got a picture with her, lol.  I swear she is my lucky charm there – I wasn’t even actively seeking her out this year since I’ve already met her twice and yet there she was anyway.
I then went a stood for two hours(!) in a line for the Coco Ma/Jill Criswell signing for their ARCs of Shadow Frost/Beasts of the Frozen Sun (respectively).  I went to the booth to ask when the line was going to start forming and the guy was like “this is the line” indicating the one I thought was for the event prior to theirs.  So yeah, got to wait for a while there.  The line moved slowly because they were both talking with people, which was nice, but I was also mildly panicking because Amanda Foody had a signing I wanted to get to as well.  But I had a nice conversation with both (Coco was wearing Gryffindor robes so we had a fun HP conversation) and I got to the HarperCollins booth just in time to see Amanda and have her sign my copy of Ace of Shades.
I think after that I wandered the floor for a bit, before making my way over to the Eoin Colfer signing.  I loved the Artemis Fowl series growing up, so I was ecstatic when I got the ticket to his signing.  The best part was we ended up talking theatre while he signed my books because he asked me what I did and I told him I do lighting design for theatre and he started talking about preferring the backstage atmosphere whenever someone puts on a play he’s written (I had no idea he wrote plays omg I’m such a fake fan lol).  And like the idiot I was I forgot to give him my business card.
After that I kinda stalked Katy Rose Pool.  She’s the author of There Will Come a Darkness which comes out in the fall and which I am currently reading (thank you Edelweiss).  It’s.  So.  Good.  And my friend had already met her during the day and told her about me and she remembered and was so nice and sweet and signed a blank bookmark I brought.  I also saw Amanda Foody there (I love how they have this group of writer friends it’s the cutest thing ever) and got the picture with her that I forgot to get earlier lol.  I then did some more shopping (got a Stardust candle that smells like stormy woods and blackberry and had little stars on top) and walked the floor until it closed.
And omg I went to the FierceReads booth to ask about the TWCAD ARC giveaway they were doing on Sunday (because yeah okay I am reading the egalley but I want it physically too of course) and while they were explaining it KATY ROSE POOL showed up again and I got so worried she thought I was an asshole for wanting the physical ARC as well instead of letting someone else get a chance to read it.  I’M SORRY I JUST WANTED ALL THE VERSIONS.  (Actually I’m over it now.  I got the ticket for the ARC game on Sunday and it was a chance-to-win game.  Basically you had your Tarot Cards read (the tarot cards are based on the characters in TWCAD) in a past-present-future spread and the present card determined which ARC you got.  I ended up getting The Last Word by Samantha Hastings oh well, but man the girl who did my reading was really good and it was scarily accurate.  But hey that gives me hope for my future cause it sounded just like what I needed.  Anyway, while I was there I watched two people who I knew had been first in both the ticket drop and the actual event line get the TWCAD ARC and I got really happy for them cause damn they deserved that.  PLUS I ended up getting an ARC of The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring for being tenth in line how cool was that!!)
Anyway, that was Saturday.
On Sunday, after getting the tickets at FierceReads (you got two for their giveaways, and beside the Tarot Card game I got a Grisha passport one which I gave to my friend cause I wasn’t interested in it), I wandered the floor for a bit before heading over to QuirkBooks to get ready for the Ashley Poston signing.  We were told we could buy the books before the signing even started so we did, and then they had a game where you turn one of those candy/prize machines you see outside of supermarkets and you got a piece of paper that indicated a prize.  My friend got a Charmed pin which she gave to me since I love the show, and I got a coupon for a free book so I got to return the copy of The Princess and the Fangirl I had just bought there and get it for free instead.  How cool is that?  And while we were in line for the game my friend saw Ashley Poston and she came over and talked with us and again while we were waiting for the signing to start.  She was so sweet and nice to talk with.
I then made the stupid attempt to try to get a ticket for the Melissa de la Cruz signing but since Penguin refuses to start lines before a certain time and just lets people stand in a blob, I again didn’t get one.  I wasn’t too angry though because I haven’t actually read any of her books, but the one she was signing for – The Queen’s Assassin – sounded interesting.  I was just more annoyed that all my other just-in-case-I-don’t-get-that-one events were already capped as well so I wandered the floor.  I finally found an event at the FaeCrate line for a die toss game but only got a chapstick lol.  Then I went to Simon & Schuster for their lollipop wall and ended up with a contemporary YA called She’s the Worst by Lauren Spieller.
I then went to the Meg Cabot signing where she signed my copy of Shadowland, because I love love love The Mediator series by her.  After that was the Tarot Card game as described above, and then the signing for Holly Black.  She seemed really nice from the line, but sadly by the time I got to her it was 4:30 and the publishers were making her speed things up to move the line along so I only got a candid picture and didn’t get much time to talk to her.  Oh well.
After that I went and got a shirt at Out of Print because they were putting them on sale by then – I got an Elephant & Piggie shirt and I LOVE it.  And then Hoopla was doing a wheel spin still but the woman said it was closed.  I waited around though because they had sunglasses and from what I could see, plenty of them (I don’t know what it is about my sunglasses but they will last like a year and then will just randomly break when I like take them off or something.  I don’t get it.)  They reopened it and when I spun and got a popsocket I asked and they just switched it for the sunglasses.  Lol score.
And that was the end of BookCon 2019!!
Here are all the books I received/bought/brought to get signed:
And here is all the swag I got (well the Susan Dennard poster I brought with me for her to sign, and the V. E. Schwab poster my friend actually got for me lol)
Also my friend and I stayed in this hotel that looked so old fashioned we kept calling it the Tower of Terror and saying we were gonna get visited by a ghost or something.  It was awesome.
Overall I was happy because I got to most of what I wanted, saw most of the authors I wanted to see, and bought some really fun merch too.  Can’t wait for next year and to see who I might get to meet then!
BookCon 2019 |A Review Hey everyone! Sorry I've not been very active on here lately (glances at personal goals for the year guiltily), but I spent the last couple of months working on shows and prepping for BookCon.

Sony Xperia Mark II - The Compact is back?
Word has been leaked via the underworld grapevine that later this year we will see the Sony Xperia 5 ii. The prediction right now is that the release date will be in Q3 of this year. Most likely around the time that the Berlin IFA would take place... but something tells me the IFA is not going to happen this year. Either way, the announcement should be in September.
So at first Sony brought back the jack on the Xperia 1ii and now... which I was happy to see & now Sony are bringing back the compact. So the rumours suggest that this phone could be ad small as 5.6 inches on the diagonal, but its more likely to be 5.8". Either way, you slice it the Sony Xperia 5ii will be a compact phone.
Sony Xperia will likely stick with the 21:9 aspect ratio which means this thing is going to be very thin at Approximately 65mm if we scale down the dimensions of the Xperia 1ii. Some say just like a Hershey bar... but in my opinion, this could be a very good thing when it comes to one-handed use and overall more grip-able. When it comes to the resolution quite honestly a FHD+ would be quite satisfactory on such a small display. Which of course will support Sonys creator mode colours. I just hope Sony splash out a little cash and try and make it 120Hz OLED panel. If you haven't used one yet, it does make a difference. Let me know in the comments. Would you like to see a 120Hz display?
Tumblr media
Now the fact that the Xperia 5ii will be more compact than the Xperia 1ii will result in a slightly smaller battery. But with it needing to power a smaller display combined with Sony's battery care features the battery life should be pretty good. I would expect it to be around 3400mAh. But here are some areas that Sony won't need to compromise. The dual front speakers, the headphone jack, the side-mounted fingerprint reader, Gorilla Glass 6 front and back. the selfy camera, the triple camera array, which means we should get the new night mode and the Sony A9 feature 20fps burst shooting with full AF/AE tracking. Basically, it's going to be maybe the only compact flagship on the market.
Inside the Xperia 5ii will be 4 to 6gb of ram & of course the immense firepower of the Qualcomm 865 5G soc. In fact, if they go with the 5.6" screen size. This form factor would make the Xperia 5ii the smallest 5G device on the planet. So while the phone will support 5G in Sub 6 waves it's unlikely it will the fastest form of 5G millimeter wave. As with such a compact device, it's unlikely there will be room inside the chassis for the additional millimeter-wave antennas this year. If your looking for that the Xperia Pro 5G is what you need to know about.
Last year Xperia 5 launched towards the end of the year and just missed out on Qualcomm's overclocked SD855+ chip. So there might be a small chance they could time it just right and get the SD865+ in the Xperia 5ii... a small chance And if they could get that...that would be awesome. So long story short if they can keep all the flagship specs mentioned this might be the compact king in 2020. With all that said...the word on the street is Sony have two flagship bullets in the chamber for the end of the year... what do you think the 2nd one will be? Xperia 6 maybe?
Now let's talk about the colour variants and finishes. I think Sony gets stuck when it comes to this. So write a comment below and let me know what would be your dream colour & finish is you could choose one. And who knows maybe Sony will read it. I like what Huawei has done with the p40 pro frosted glass. Something like this would be amazing, no fingerprints, it's not slippery... it is so awesome.
Sony Xperia 1 ii fans here is an update for you guys. Some information has leaked confirming the camera spec & the expected release date of the #Sony #Xperia... Source: https://www.whatgear.net/technology/xperia-5-mark-2-release-date
