Interview with Nico Dey

Could you introduce yourself and who influences your music? "My name is Nico Dey, I'm a French Singer-Songwriter and Guitarist. I was born in Paris and raised in a French-American family where I've been mostly influenced by Classic Rock music such as The Beatles, the Stones, Elvis or Fleetwood Mac.

I remember hearing around 4 years old the album Rubber Soul and was obsessed by it, listening to it on repeat on my small cassette radio, especially the song Michelle which has French and English lyrics. 

My dad was a classic piano player and got me into learning but it's only later at 12 years old that I started to learn guitar after hearing the album 'In Utero' by Nirvana. 

I have a large palette of influences but I would say the main ones so far were Neil Young, Cream of Eric Clapton, Jack White, the Stone late 60's period and Nick Cave. 

Having listened to a lot of blues and rock music from the 50's to late 70's, my ear eventually got a bit tired of it and I still feel very connected to some 90's music (being born in 93') such as Jeff Buckley, Brian Jonestown Massacre or Soundgarden.  

In the end, all I'm looking for is to write songs that feel true to me and original. I would never be able to focus only on one style of music."

What are the hits you are most proud of? "In my First EP, 'Corpse Of Kimbro', I am very proud of this song 'Hot Honey'. It started out as a late night jam home alone on my guitar, a wha pedal and a drum machine. I hear a mix of various influences such as Classic Rock, Psychedelic and even Grunge music. All the layers I put in together and recording it live with my band ended up being an epic piece of music. I also spent a lot of energy writing different ideas of lyrics and melodies on this one with my best friend Shawn Haas who I've been writing with for years now."

Who are currently your three favourite artists? "Currently, I've been listening a lot to Jeff Buckley, John Prine and Leonard Cohen."

What’s happening or do you hope will happen in your music career? "I hope to build a larger community of fans with time so I can keep focusing on writing songs and make a sustainable living with music. 

My plan now is to finish recording my second EP which only has vocals left to get done with and focus at the same time on finishing all the French songs that I'm working on. It matters a lot to me now because I haven't released anything in French so far and I believe my music will be more vulnerable and true to myself as it is my native language."

What song do you think our followers should be listening to right now? "I think they should take the time to listen to the 4 songs of my 1st EP 'Corpse of Kimbro'. Everything has been recorded in the same live room from this Studio called QDS in Paris, France. We were five musicians playing together and it captures a beautiful moment so it makes sense to take the time to listen to it as an album."

Raphael gazed at the form before him. Its skin glowed golden in the soft light, inviting, supple. Muscles curve under it, the promise of strength, of resistance. It was sweet to break. The moans fanned his fires, driving him to take Haarlep harder than ever.

But the knowledge that it was Haarlep under the guise of Tav nagged at the back of his mind. Yes, the insolent paladin got to feel every time Haarlep used their body for his pleasure, but Raphael would have preferred to see Tav stifle the feelings in public, to see them tense, fight, and freeze under the onslaught of pleasure instead of having Haarlep's convincing displays of begrudging compliance.

He made sure to make the gusts of ecstasy annoying and distracting. Raphael derived pleasure from the power of making Tav feel the use of their body at the worst of times. Repeatedly. A constant reminder of what they already traded in. He grabbed a handful of hair and pulled almost-Tav's head back. "Say you are sorry."

"I am sorry," Haarlep whimpered just right. Almost credible, their back arched and throat exposed. Almost the real thing.

"Convince me," Raphael ordered and thrust forward hard. "Convince me."

The words growled over the curve of the taut back before him. And the answer came, in whines in moans ins desperate gasps. Half a moment the words stuck in his mind as he fucked himself into a frenzy. Half a moment. He would show that wannabe how long half a moment could be. He would wipe that grin right of Tav's face and make sure they'd stay wiped.

"How does this feel?" He leant over the quivering body. If he wanted to break the real Tav, Raphael could get all the ammunition he needed here. Once he got his own desire quenched. Which was a difficult task because confronted with Tav's face and body, a rage overcame him that needed repeated release.

His teeth dug into the soft skin at the crook of the presented neck. Tav would pay for their insolence. Once they returned to present the Crown of Karsus to him, Raphael would make them pay for forever. And they would like it. A victory greater than the humiliation of learning Tav's body and sweeter for the unlimited power over them this will grant him.

The fantasy gripped Raphael tight and he spent himself with a victorious roar. One day, it would be the real Tav quivering in lust and unbridled desire under him. He would have them beg and perform all of his favourite depravities on him. The price of defying a devil. The price of defying him, Raphael, was eternal servitude to his desires – and those were strong and relentless.

For a moment Raphael allowed himself to relax against Haarlep, their transformed back supporting the short exhaustion between anger and rage. Then he flipped the incubus onto its back, displaying Tav in all their naked glory.

He reached out with his fingers, running them down their clavicles. The night was young and there was much to do ahead. "How does this feel?!?"

EccentroSoul 1 Woman Band Live : The Album

Since the earlier years of  Chaquis Maliq's career, there was definitely a desire to have a live album. Maliq's first project, circa 2006, The Demonstration Vol. I  (no longer available to the public) was the live vision  of a seasoned

  songstress. The Demonstration Vol. I displayed self-produced full band production, live audience samples from Maxwell's Live album, while adding in crowd vocals, plus background singing and arrangements on every track.

The EccentroSoul 1 Woman Band Live album is the humble and utter opposite.  A stripped down and intimate performance without an audience, because in 2020, as we know it, was the height of COVID-19. The opportunity to record arose just a year after Maliq's second Sofar Sounds show, which offers a live audience and video footage. With that experience added to the EccentroSoul 1 Woman Band's performance resume, it was now time to do it in Charleston at The Gaillard Center.

If you have had the chance of seeing Chaquis owning the stage, then you know that Maliq speaks to the audience in between songs, with music still playing in the background, resembling  the execution of  full bands.  This album includes this vibe, and your ear drums will feel like Chaquis Maliq is singing and speaking directly to you. If you are new to the EccentroSoul 1 Woman Band; Chaquis Maliq sings, plays guitar, plays the cajon, and tip taps foot instruments, simultaneously.

I'm Bup! I was sovery lost, so I asked zhe pretty lady for help! She probably didn't hear me, zhough, because she kept walking. Oh well!

It was getting dark, also. I zhought really hard about looking for zhe enclave at night, but... As much as I miss zhem, and I'm sure zhey also miss me sosomuch, it probably is actually safer to sleep in zhe city.

Yeah! So I do zhat. Even zhough it is very, very cold out.

Now I was back at zhe enclave! I was playing wizh all of my friends, and everyone liked me so much! And zhey only ever yelled at me a little when I messed up! I messed up a lot.

Zhe Matriarch took me to a very pretty lake, and she leaned close to me... And pushed me in.

I was really scared! I'm not good at swimming! I'm not good at anyzhing.

I tried to scream, but nozhing came out, and zhe Matriarch just stared at me...

And zhen I woke up, back on zhe city street where I fell asleep. What a silly dream!

My tummy made a weird noise.

I don't remember how long I've been looking for my enclave! Zhey sent me into zhe city to get somezhing, and when I got back, everyone was gone! I zhink maybe zhey moved and forgot to tell me. Isn't zhat sosilly of zhem?

I knew I had to be sosneaky, because humans like to zhrow yinglets who are where zhey shouldn't be. I didn't want to be zhrown! And zhats why, when I saw a human-

I yelled! And I hit him wizh my metal stick! It got stuck in him. Is zhat why zhey call it a stick? Hehehe.

"Damned scav...! I'll fuckin' show you-"

He lifted up his arm. He had a knife! He was about to get me wizh it, but anozher human grabbed him. She looked at me.

"Hey, little fella. Did you catch this guy?"

I nodded at her. Oh no. She was gonna zhrow me. Zhe man she held yelled. I zhink she twisted his arm.

"He's been causin' all kindsa trouble at me inn. Thank ye."

She held him zhere for a bit before more humans came and took him away.

"So, are ya lost, li'l one? I can give ya some work."

She slapped her hands togezher. I nodded.

It lasted about a week. She kept trying to find zhings for me to do, but I kept messing zhem up. She tried to be patient wizh me, but...

"Listen, Bup, I'm sorry. I cannae afford ta keep housin' ya if ya can't give anythin' back..."

She sighed. I know she wanted to help me, but... I sighed, too. Maybe I am stupid, like zhe Matriarch said. Maybe zhey didn't tell me zhey were moving on purpose.

"I'm really sorry, miss... I can do better, give me anozher chance!"

"I'm sorry, Bup. I've run outta things for ya to do."

I was sovery sad, yes. It was zhe saddest I've been ever!

But zhen I met her. She was at zhe inn a few times. She was a very pretty yinglet, and she dressed like a matriarch, but she lived in a biiiiiig house in zhe city. I walked out of zhe inn, so so sad, and she stopped me.

"Hello, Bup."

"Bup."

I made my favorite sound.

"I see you, too, have been scorned by humans. I am on a mission-"

She said some ozher stuff, but I got distracted, looking at somezhing far away. I wave to it.

"Are you listening to-"

"Is zhat indrel wizh you?"

She looks surprised.

"How did you see..."

"Zhey are sofar away, but I have really good eyes!"

I smiled. Zhat was anozher zhing I was good at. Seeing and locks!

"... What is your favorite zhing in zhe world to do, Bup?"

I zhink for a bit.

"Plants!"

She smiled. And bowed.

"I am Zelt, but if you would be my gardener, you may call me Matriarch."

Books 2022

I find it highly amusing that the longest book I Read in 2022 was Meatbun Doesn’t Eat Meat’s new light novel Medical Record Book / Bing An Ben. I read that book a chapter every day with a machine translation (+ plus all the cars = sex scenes on a Discord server) until it was finished. It was fun and weird to follow an ongoing novel every day for such a long time.

Other notables:

Lisa Edmonds Alice Worth world had a few new entries. IIRC, she’s self-published, but I highly rec her Alice Worth urban fantasy series. Alice is a magic worker with a very tortured (literally) past, who starts to form new connections in the first book and ends up with an extended family who are all threatened by her past in the later books. She also started a new series which is okay sofar. I’ll wait and see how it develops.

Ruby Fever by Ilona Andrews

Long-awaited continuation to their Hidden Legacy series. It ended Catalina’s story, so now we still have Arabella and her Beast to deal with. Urban fantasy in a unique world with various hereditary magical talents where a family of hidden talents tries to hide at first, but after being forced to enter the magical world, struggles to set their place in the power structure. (Lol, this is like a deliberately vague summary of all the books.)

Mo Du / Silent Reading by Priest

The best danmei I’ve read in a while. A crime story that just kept building upon a thing layer after gruesome layer. All episodes were crimes in their own, but kept building info on the big background plot. The romance between the mains starts out with cautious attraction as adults after they’ve known each other since the other one was a teen at a crime scene.
