A new patent filed by Sony could let you charge a smartphone by sucking precious energy from a friend's device. The patent describes a way to wirelessly transfer power between devices using near-field communication (NFC) technology. It doesn't specify that these devices would necessarily be phones, instead using the term "portable consumer electronic device." Whatafuture, which first noticed the patent, suggests this could refer to portable power banks or battery packs. Phone-to-phone wireless charging would consume a huge amount of battery, as Gizmodo points out. It would seem silly to spend a huge amount of your battery life to transfer power to another phone, and power banks are definitely a much more sensible option. LG Electronics plans to launch a mobile payments service for its new flagship smartphone G6 in South Korea in June. Users would be able to make payments through existing credit card readers via a magnetic signal from the phone, similar to how Samsung's payments system - launched in August 2015 - works. LG did not elaborate on details including whether its payments service would expand to other markets, whether it would be supported on other devices or if it would generate revenue. If you use WhatsApp or Telegram on your web browser, you'll want to shut down the browser and start it up again to keep hackers from taking over your account. A group of researchers from cybersecurity firm Check Point revealed Wednesday that the web browser version of these popular encrypted-messaging apps had flaws that could have let hackers access and alter user accounts. "This means that attackers could potentially download your photos and or post them online, send messages on your behalf, demand ransom, and even take over your friends' accounts," the researchers wrote in a blog post published Wednesday. Check Point says it was able to access WhatsApp user accounts by sending a photo file containing malicious code. If the user was accessing his or her account from a browser and clicked on the photo, it gave full access to the sender. Samsung Electronics has completed the acquisition of Harman International Industries in a deal worth $8 billion, the company announced. Xiaomi developed smart running shoes. The name is quite the mouthful — the “90 Minutes Ultra Smart Sportswear.” The shoes have been created in conjunction with Intel, which created the tiny Curie module that makes the shoes “smart.” That is to say, capable of tracking your fitness. At the end of the day, you can check out a comprehensive report that lets you know how far you traveled (on foot), your average speed, and calories burned. Priced at just $44, these would certainly be popular if they ever made it to the U.S., but don’t hold your breath, said Digital Trends. Other rumored specs and features for the S8 include a dock that turns the phone into a desktop device, a souped-up digital assistant named Bixby, and a bigger version of the handset called the S8 Plus. The regular S8 will supposedly have a 5.8-inch display, while the larger device will have a 6.2-inch display. A leaked spec sheet for the Plus also lists a Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 3,500 mAh battery (3,000 mAh on the smaller S8). Citing an unnamed source, Macotakara reported that in addition to new iPads, Apple is also expected to unveil a high-capacity 128-gigabyte iPhone SE —as well as a potential (Product)Red iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus —at a media event in March. Monday's report suggested that Apple could also introduce a 7.9-inch iPad Pro, but that would contradict earlier rumors suggesting the iPad mini is not due for a refresh. The company's smallest tablet has not been updated since late 2015. Macotakara has reported on a red colorway option for the iPhone before, but previously suggested Apple could hang on to that until the launch of an "iPhone 7s" later this year. Adding a new color mid product cycle could be a way for Apple to juice sales of the iPhone 7 months before the anticipated refresh. #softwarepride #iphone7 #rediphone #ios #ios10 #developer #tech #news #technews #iosdev #technology #android #appdevcompany (at Budapest, Hungary)

Apple is going to start "manufacturing" iPhones in India this spring., but firstly you should mention that Apple will only assemble the 4-inch iPhone SE in India, at a facility on the outskirts of Bangalore. There are no plans at the moment to manufacture the latest iPhones proper. "The [SE] assembly should start by April or so," a source told Mashable India. Apple's partner Wistron's manufacturing facility in Peenya is only going to assemble the smartphones, with no actual "manufacturing" taking place. This is just the first step for Apple's plans for India, sources tell Mashable. #softwarepride #apple #iphone #iphonese #ios #ipod #ipad #mobile #news #mobileapp #tech #technews #iosdev #android #developer #computer (at San Francisco, California)

Samsung is preparing to unveil a pair of Galaxy S8 smartphones significantly different from past models, according to someone familiar with the company’s plans. The two models, with 5.8- and 6.2-inch QHD Super AMOLED screens that cover 83 percent of their front panels, were first detailed by The Guardian. Because of their unusual size, their aspect ratio — at 18.5:9 — deviates slightly from the industry-standard 16:9. As The Guardian noted, both models sport Samsung’s “edge” display, which curves downward on both sides of the handset. Battery capacity is said to be a relatively conservative 3000mAh and 3500mAh for the 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch designs, respectively. The camera remains the same 12 MP, but front-facing camera will be improved to 8 MP. What's more new features? Samsung’s version of the Google Assistant (and Apple’s Siri), known as Bixby. It’s said to be able to handle more complex commands than its competitors, such as multi-part instructions, and is launched by a dedicated button on the side of the devices. The phone will be presented on March 29 in New York. The cost will start from 799€. #softwarepride #samsung #galaxy #galaxys8 #android #nougat #hitech #technews #tech #developer #programmer #news #mobileappdev #androiddev #iosdev (at Brooklyn, New York)

More details are emerging about Samsung's internal investigation into the problems with the Galaxy Note 7, which led to some of the devices catching fire and exploding. Samsung is expected to announce on January 23 that the battery, and not software or hardware, caused the Note 7 smartphone to catch fire and explode. The internal investigation found multiple problems with the batteries, the Wall Street Journal now reports: some were irregularly sized, while others had manufacturing problems, unnamed sources told the Journal.
