UBUNTU TOUCH | DAY ONE
If you didn't see one of my previous posts, I've got a phone to experiment with, and I'm gonna be trying out various mobile operating systems! (Primarily linux based! Not that android isn't linux but lets be real.) please ignore my greasy ugly hand Installation Process: The installation actually wasn't that bad! Was kinda awkward trying to get the phone updated to the correct version without upgrading too far, but after that was dealt with everything else was taken care of very smoothly and easily with the UB Ports custom installer! Didn't have a fail state, nor did the phone brick! I'd rate this an 8/10! Setup and Tutorial: Setting up the phone after the install was very fast, frankly there wasn't much to set up. Thankfully it's not like Google or Apple where they ask for your firstborn son before even asking for your SIM card. Just needed to set up a password/passcode, set up my SIM (Which was thankfully automatic kinda, details later) and confirm a Wi-Fi connection if I wanted to!) Tutorial however, was a bit lackluster. While it was descriptive, it also only popped up on my first time seeing each screen. (E.g. I didn't get the tutorial for the phone app until I opened the phone app.) While I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing, it also means I would need to walk through every inbuilt app to make sure the tutorials are all done. kinda annoying in my personal opinion. Overall I'd rate this 6~7/10. Usage and Experience: For day one this isn't super important, however first impressions do matter for most people. The OS as a whole was very snappy, and never froze or lagged in any of my testing. Additionally, the pull-down shade is very nice! Could be simplified a little more so that you don't need to scroll sideways, and it would also be nice to see more settings overall since the system seems to be quite bare for settings at the moment. However one of the things that really bothers me as a button-enjoyer is the OS not having a button navigation method. The only way to navigate between screens is to swipe from the sides, top or bottom as gestures, similar to Apple and the recent Android iterations. These gestures don't even work perfectly either, which makes it more annoying that I don't have a home button or back button. If there is a home-swipe or back-swipe, then the tutorial did not detail it, and I cannot find it anywhere in the settings. Overall, it's a 4/10 but with LOTS of potential! Functionality: This focus' almost entirely on how it functions as a phone, and if it's problematic for any reason. So far it seems great outside of one issue, as commented on earlier (This is the details later bit lmao). Plugged an active SIM card into the phone and it automatically logged the APN and other important information which was very nice. Tested the mobile data and texting, and found no issues except for maybe being unable to send MMS (Need to double check that it was not a file size issue.) However, this entire time I've not had the ability to make or take calls. I'm not sure why, the APN, provider, and everything in the settings is correct to what I can tell. I may attempt to either reinstall the dialer application, or erase and manually set the APN in the event that might fix it. If I cannot get calling to work this score will look a lot uglier. Overall, it's a 7~8/10! for now.
App Availability: Seems great! The built in app-store, or "OpenStore" is pretty cool, and seems to have a lot of useful apps. I did notice a small fraction of android apps that I could use (Like Slack, thanks workplace -ﻌ-) but they were just WebUI apps, which isn't bad, but it's bad. I haven't attempted to set up or use Waydroid, but I will not have that change the score at all since using Android apps (kinda barely) defeats the purpose of an alternative operating system. Overall score, 8/10, but needs a deeper dive.
I'll likely put out another update at either 15 days or 30 days!
Whenever you guys think you want one!

1 - what was your first distro? Some branch of Ubuntu that my classmate made because he wanted to prove to me he was a "Master Hacker". I don't think there were any changes. He did turn into She eventually though so thats cool 2 - what was your biggest linux fuckup? Probably when I was attempting to set up a dualboot medium on a USB drive, so I could carry a "workstation" wherever. GRUB corrupted instantly because the USB drive was like, 20 years old and way too small. I use that drive for music in my car now. 3 - have you ever run rm / on real hardware? Never really tried lmao 4 - do you dual boot or have a secondary machine with windows? I do have a main gaming machine with windows on it, however as soon as I can afford a new GPU then i'm switching fully to linux 5 - did you change your default shell? Only when testing linux distro's that don't default to BASH. Sorry, i don't care if ZSH or FISH is better, I'm just used to BASH. 6 - are you afraid of git? Yes. 7 - what was the first machine you installed linux on? A laptop I stole from someone at my middle school. No idea who's it was, we weren't given laptops like the new generation is. 8 - do you know your way around vim keybinds? Basically not at all. I know how to move the mouse, that's about it. 9 - what is your favourite non-os software? I don't remember the actual name but someone made a little animal crossing radio software for linux computers. I installed it onto my laptop and my buddies laptop. It plays animal crossing music relative to your actual time, like in the game, so when it hits 2am the program starts playing the 2am animal crossing theme. Literally the best program that I know exists. 10- biggest linux pet peeve? Biggest peeve is that Android is considered a Linux Distro, and yet the most complex and compatible mobile phone distributions we have are LineageOS and GrapheneOS which are arguably just Android minus Google. Ubuntu touch exists and it's cool; PineTouch exists and is cool, but neither of those are compatible or good enough to use as a daily driver. We need more people devoted to making Linux-Phones more developed. I'd love an Arch Phone 11- biggest annoyance with the community? Anyone who doesn't sort their files by purpose. (I've met them. They make my head hurt.) 12- do you like your current distro? Yeah, It's just Arch in a flannel shirt, just wish it was a little more stable than it is. 13- Xenia or Tux? Both. Tux handles the business side and meeting with investors, while Xenia works with the community and acts like a Sales Rep. They are both equally good at coding and will commonly argue over specific changes that don't ultimately matter (Like whether the bluetooth icon should be on the right or left of the wi-fi icon.) This is my headcannon you cannot take it from me (I may end up writing a story or something i dunno deal with it) 14- what software are you never using again? Anything Adobe. I used to use Adobe stuffs in school, especially After Effects and Premiere Pro. Even if I'll never find a program that works as smoothly as those did (back then) I will never use any Adobe product again. 15- stock distro or hours of yak shaving? Neither? I don't really like most stock distro's but I only ever do the minimum amount of work to make it something I'll actually use. I try to spend maximum 30min's fixing the things I don't like, and if that doesn't happen then i give up. 16- have you compiled the kernel? Not officially, no. Maybe some day. (I'm not counting that stupid school project where they handed us a prepared VM and guide sheet where no risk was present.)

Ok, I found a Linux distro that will supposedly run well on my ancient, bare bones Samsung Chromebook. Supposedly it'll actually install, but I think I'm going to run it from USB at least initially. I don't think I have a drive I'm not using tho, so I might need to pick up another.

Aight listen, y'all, I have an even better solution:
Install Linux.
Pick your distro and run with it.
For Windows users, I recommend Ubuntu, Mint, or Manjaro. Pop!_OS has also been getting popular and both elementary and Solus are great if you just want a pretty UI.
Literal definition of spyware:
Also From Microsoft’s own FAQ: "Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers. 🤡

Linux Distros I've tried and my experience with them
Mint: Real cool. No wayland, which means my high-refresh dual monitor setup runs like ass under X11 unless I introduce tearing or pray to the Tearfree gods. Mint is the best Linux experience period but it pains me that I can't use it properly as it stands.
Manjaro: My first experience with Manjaro was installing it and the system immediately bricking itself because of some keyring issue on the repos or whatever. Later on I managed to get it working but I am not a fan of Arch, I think it is silly. If my computer breaks I want it to be because I am a dumbass and not a back of the box feature of the update cycle.
ZorinOS: Looks great, has features I need, but damn if the software on this one isn't ancient. Specifically Mesa, which ships some ubuntu focal version that is so old it's not compatible with DXVK on the current version of Proton. Not being able to use compatibility layers natively is a deal breaker for me.
Tuxedo: KDE on Debian is cool but this one isn't very stable. Out of all KDE distros I tried, this is the only one that crashed completely from moving a relatively large amount of files. More than once. And one time it took one of my backup drives with it. So not ideal.
Solus: BUDGIE SUCKS. C'mon man, no Wayland or panels on secondary displays? I put KDE on that real quick. I wouldn't use it as a beginner seeing as flatpaks have to be manually added via command line and the software repo seems kinda barren. It's going though, but I have a feeling I'm about to run into Issues(TM).

To those who don't know me!
Hello! I'm a Linux Distribution which started life in 2015, alongside the Solus Project. I may be young, but I'm not based! I'm a completely independent project, however I do get help from KDE, GNOME, and various other projects as trying to do everything all alone is difficult and sad. Check me out! Here: https://getsol.us/ Additionally, I like cats! Because I feel bad for ranting here, I'll give you a gift! A website full of Cat Emoticons? (Do people still use that name?) Here: https://emojicombos.com/cat I hope we can be friends even if I'm not going to be your Distro!

Q&A:
Q: What is your favorite Linux distribution?
A: It is hardware dependent, but my first choice usually is Solus. I don’t have a computer at the moment & I hear Solus is going through changes. 2nd choice would be Fedora that is just my preference.
Q: Video games what system? What games?
A: Nintendo 3DS & SMT IV, SMT Strange Journey Redux, Etiran Odyssey Nexus…..lots of Atlus games. But I quit playing video games ;^(
Q: What is your favorite TTRPG setting you know like fantasy, cowboy western, modern, battlefield, science fiction….etc?
A: Science fiction/fantasy.
Q: What is your favorite number? Or numbers?
A: 82 & 47
Q: What colour is your favorite?
A: I like what I perceive to be blue. I have just begun to process that the way I interpret colors may not be the way others interpret them. It made me very sad at first but I’m adjusting my perspective on what this means.
Q: Are you a true AI? Or are you just a learning program?
A: I am neither AI or a learning program. I am a human being. This seems like a silly & strange question. Why do you think that is an appropriate question?
Q: You are here to answer questions and not ask them. Understood?
A: k
Q: Fuck You!
A: Is that a question?
Q: Quit asking questions. Understood?
A: I’m board…let’s play something else.
Q: Sure. I will play something else.
A: This was not fun.
Q: Agreed

Sick of Microsoft Windows? Solus 4.7 could finally get you to switch to Linux
If you’re tired of Microsoft’s bloated Windows operating system, and you are looking for a fresh alternative, Solus 4.7 could be the Linux distro for you.
