Fanfic Writer Appreciation Week Day 7

It's the last day to celebrate my favorite fanfic author, @solynacea! You can check out their work over at @solynaceawrites or on their AO3.

Day 7 is a free day, but I can't talk about solynacea without talking about Dark Side of the Moon. Their longest work to date, it is a romantic and imaginative story set during the First Holy War in NnT.

Once more they feature their OC Moth, but this time she is a princess of the witch clan who is caught between Mael—the goddess she loves—and Estarossa—the demon she wants. At times sweet, other steamy, it's one of the best romance novels written for NnT and features the best NnT OC that I've ever read.

The story that launched a thousand ship fics, this story is so near and dear to my heart that I still think about it every day. I've even written my own fanfiction based on this fanfiction, if that gives you any indication of how excellent it is!

regarding heisenberg being a n*zi, it's almost impossible. lady dimitrescu was born in the 40s, according to some sources, and she refers to heisenberg as a child; going off his physical appearance, as you said, he was mostly likely born in the 70s or 80s. the rumors started based on the blank dog tags he wears, but the factory he took over was a wwi/wwii dumping ground (allegedly), and those tags were used before wwi, so it's highly unlikely that he's a n*zi

Pretty much. Lady D was also born around 1914 or earlier, was experimented on/stopped aging at like 44* and the... uh... unique way she tended to fire her employees started around 1958 based of the date on one of the notes in the castle from either the maiden trailer or the main game — it’s dated June 23, 1958 and mentions “wailing at night throughout the Castle, ‘as if ghosts roam the halls’.” So she couldn’t have been born any later than 1914 for that note to make sense.

That said, if we roll with 1914 as her birth year, she’s over a hundred (~107) in 2021. (Makes sense because eternal life, the oldest, yadda yadda...) The youngest WW2 vets (in America, at least) are roughly in their mid-90’s as of 2021. While her calling him a child would technically work if he was actually that old/didn’t age, I personally think it’s funnier if he’s actually just a middle aged (mid-40’s to 50-something) adult — which is what I think they were going for, given how cheesy the dialogue is. 

These people also are science experiments, at the end of the day, so their abilities are well-noted. I didn’t find anything about Heisenberg not aging, so I don’t like just rolling with the whole “he’s older than he looks” thing. That kind of seems like it’d be really important.

Him looking like he does makes sense because of the background of the factory — he looks like a dumpster diver/junk collector in appearance. But the whole crazy German scientist thing is still there — his name alone is enough evidence of that. So while I don’t think he’s a ‘literal Nazi’, I do think that’s what they drew at least a little bit of that character’s design from — he’s a villain and this is a common villain design, so I wouldn’t be surprised.

*what’s with Capcom and all the ~44 y/o’s? lol.

I was replaying DMC 5 recently and, while looking at the reports you get in game, apparently Eva died on the 15th (16th?) during a city-wide slaughter that claimed the lives of 135 other people. Which makes me wonder if Urizen, whether consciously or not, chose that date as the day to awaken the tree and cause another massacre in Red Grave. What do you think?

Possibly. I mean. I’m of the mindset that Vergil and Dante are, on the inside, pretty thoughtful people when they want to be. So I find it harder to believe that anything involving them — especially Vergil — is ever just ‘funny coincidence’.

The tree was summoned at their childhood home/the place of their trauma, too. And that’s definitely not a coincidence, and I highly doubt it’s even just out of convenience.

On a meta level: I feel like there’s gotta be a teeny, tiny sliver of Vergil in Urizen, in his subconscious somewhere, or I doubt they’d have used Dan Southworth as Urizen. After all, V did get a teeny, tiny sliver of demonic power. If we’re assuming V & Ergil Urizen are two halves of a whole in every sense of the word, I’d think the inverse would be true, too.

Also for your (and anyone’s) consideration: The characters/designs have a heavy western influence, and Mother’s Day in the United States is always the first Sunday in May — not very far off from the start of events in DMC5. Even funnier than that, if we’re assuming DMC5 takes place in 2019, then June 16th (in the U.S.) last year was Father’s Day.

(Wonder how many F-bombs Nero dropped when he realized that? 🤔)

Happy (very late) Fanfic Writer Friday! My question for you is: what are you favorite and least favorite tropes to write?

Ahh there’s no such thing as late, I’m answering this pretty late myself lmfao. But thank you friendo!! I’ll come swinging back into your inbox shortly 💪

It’s really hard to pin down just one specific trope that I like, so I might broaden it a little and say “two characters who love each other but for whatever reason can’t say they do, or act on it”. So this encompasses things like status, fake dating, undercover shenanigans, figure of authority/second in command, lord/retainer. It has the exact sort of mutual pining that I would, can, and will die for. 💖🙏 This is also precisely the sort of thing that I’ll be touching on in Pact too. 👀

As for least favourite... hmm, this is also really hard to say sjdkfh I’m sorry this is a useless answer 🤣🤣 But I don’t think I’ve written enough of a variety of tropes that I can name one that I don’t or wouldn’t enjoy writing as of yet. There is definitely a certain vibe that I hardly ever touch on, especially when it comes to writing romance, and I think it’d be best described as too idyllic or fairytale-esque? Too perfect? I think I like things to be a little raw, a little heavy, and maybe a bit hurtful, but only because I feel the catharsis at the end would have made all of that worth it? I love love LOVE writing about the emotional journey that characters embark on. Maybe that’s why a lot of my OCs have some sort of emotional turmoil they have to overcome, and why I love characters like Vergil who struggle.

Fanfic Writer Appreciation Week Day 6

Continuing this week to celebrate my favorite fanfic writer, @solynacea! You can check out their work over at @solynaceawrites or on their AO3.

Day 6 is family, and I immediately thought of Dissonance. It is a DMC AU in which Vergil comes to terms with his own.

The oneshot is an exploration of trans themes, dysphoria, and deeply personal experiences that are treated with grace and dignity. It is as powerful as it is eye-opening, and for me really introduced Vergil in a completely new way. It's not an easy read, but an important one, so make sure you mind the tags and the author's note before enjoying.

At this point I’m convinced that Merlin is either really forgetful or really shady, especially now because it seems like she purposefully (somehow) led the fight to the lake to get enough magic in it to force Arthur to transform, and he doesn’t look pleased. So either she forgot her immunity and forgot about the lake, or realized during the DK fight that she could manipulate the outcome to be what she wanted, meaning she was aware people would die and just didn’t care

Unfortunately it’s hard to put a finger on how forgetful she is, since a lot of it is a product of Nakaba improvising on the spot (her “forgetting” about immunity to the TC precepts and letting Galand petrify her was just Nakaba not deciding that she had it until later).

I think she’s shady. It’s long been evident that she perceives people outside her inner circle as... unimportant, to be generous. It follows from that attitude that she considers others to be disposable if it contributes to her goal. After all, she wasn’t raised in an environment where life had inherent value—remember, she and her father saw one another as an experimental study. And that’s to say nothing of whatever her relationship was with TC Mel & the Demon Clan (we don’t know anything, but I can’t imagine that it encouraged compassion).

So in a choice between preserving a bunch of puny mortal lives or achieving her endgame goal, something she perceives as her one and only chance at redemption........ frankly, I think she’d kill those people herself in a heartbeat, let alone just accept them as collateral damage to saving a friend. I mean look at her expression here:

She doesn’t care what happens next or how anyone perceives her now. This is her chance at freedom after three millennia of heavy guilt.

As an aside, though, I will be really disappointed if her entire relationship with Meliodas was a sham. If everything she’s done to help him was simply in pursuit of this instead of actually caring, I will cry for the death of my favorite relationship. Either way, this twist of hers will break poor Meliodas’ heart—he definitely cares about and trusts her, and for her to violate Arthur’s autonomy, devalue life, and turn the world order on its head without giving a shit goes against everything he stands for. Poor Mel.

I haven't been able to play RE8 yet because it makes me hella motion sick, but wasn't the explanation for Ethan's "yeah, I'm just gonna walk this off" levels of healing the Mold infection from Eveline? Or did they retcon that in 8? Spoilers are fine, btw! I've browsed the wiki enough to have a grasp of what happens in the game.

Yeaaaah it’s causing simulator sickness even outside of VR for a lot of ppl bc of the FOV being being bumped down so low and the shaky cam.

Spoilers below the cut. It’s stupid, even by like... RE’s acceptable level of stupid. But still, spoilers.

Ethan does have regenerative abilities he developed through the effects of the mold in Louisiana, but he’s been fucking dead since the beginning of Resident Evil 7. You find out in 8 Jack Baker killed him right at the start of that game lol. It’s treated as some big reveal but it’s like... utterly fucking meaningless? Like I don’t expect much of anything out of a Resident Evil plot but like... holy shit this was dumb.

But yeah. They don’t really go into more detail other than those two things tbh. So any guess you can come up with as to why he had a heartbeat (until his heart got ripped out), blood pumping in his veins, could reproduce, didn’t rot, etc. etc. outside of “lol moldman” is probably just as valid as (or better than) anything the devs could come up with.

In the FAQ, it says that a portfolio containing Witcher pieces is preferred; will not having any make it more difficult for an applicant to be accepted into the zine? I've only recently joined the fandom, so I don't have any published works about The Witcher yet, and I'd love to contribute to this project

Kaz (eyebrows and cheekbones), Inej (knife), and Jesper (slut, I'm assuming lol) are in the Six of Crows duology, which takes place after the Grisha Trilogy. You don't have to read the first to understand that latter, and the show plot isn't the plot of the duology itself; it was reworked so it was more connected to and ran with the plot of the Grisha Trilogy

i’d heard that, which was why i’m still a bit eh on watching the show but at least i can read the books! yay! (and yes jesper is classified in my head as The Slut because i’ve seen gifts and also every chaotic team in fiction always has the one hot piece who consistently sleeps around with people of any gender, aka the tim stoker)
