The first image is the cover I first saw. Now we reach the final villanelle. I don't know if I've healed the way this loved book hurts, but I'm glad I did this project after wanting to for so long.
Text of poem under readmore.
No Need for a Calliope
It’s over now—the tents and lights are gone
October goes, but not all’s been put right.
Don’t worry—I can whistle up the song
For all of us still waiting in the wrong
Suspecting we’ve got more of dark than bright.
It’s over now—the tents and lights are gone
And yes we sigh, say “We’ll be waiting long
For anyone we don’t at once affright.”
I worry—but I’ll whistle up the song.
One way to be a freak is to be strong
We will return some other brilliant night
Though now it’s over—tents and lights all gone.
We’ll make sure we bring everyone along
Next time—we’ll write—and wont that be a sight!
Don’t worry—we can whistle up the song
And find the carnival where we belong
Because we know the town’s long-standing might
Is over now—those tents and lights are gone.
Don’t worry! We will whistle up our song.

some little gay bug sketches :]
bonus under cut
i like to think quirrel is actually very very bad at cooking. made with love of course but probably a very unique experience. burn the water season the stew with herbal tea forget how to cut a vegetable type situations
(hollow, i think, would likely not mind. they are not the type of critter i’d expect to have a typical idea of what tastes good. they probably make their own Atrocious Soup which is in turn thoroughly enjoyed)

manifesting the Blackthorns have the nastiest, most nauseatingly angsty epic train wreck of a fight in TWP. perhaps in the second book or whenever they all find out about Livvy. like it's awful and you can't look away as they're all at their worst with the people they love the most, who they would do and have done anything for. it's the bloodiest fight any of them have ever been in and there wasn't even any weapons involved, just words they didn't mean and cannot take back. like they all care so much about one another but things have changed and none of them cope with it at all so instead it all just. blows up. like Ty only ever wanted to keep everyone together and go back to how things were, but instead he's the one who inadvertently fractures them; the unavoidabe fate of Blackthorns siblings.

to be clear i don't ship them - honestly the thought makes my skin crawl - but i really hope that if shrue and VAL ever meet they have a divorced exes who use snark to poorly disguise how much they fucking Loathe each other dynamic, because there is something so psychosexually horrifying about their mutual boss using VAL to gaslight shrue into doubting the reality of their spouse and kids to the point of blowing up their entire life over it to me
