Kenzie 

The hidden goddess of songs in SM Entertainment. 

The brilliant lyricist that is behind some of the most iconic songs in SM’s history. 

A graduate from the Berklee College of music, yes, that Berklee she has written 10 songs to hit number 1 on the gaon chart, and her B-sides are dreams.  

The thing that I love about Kenzie is that she knows how to twist a song into making it mean something while saying something else.  It’s kind of hidden meanings within a song that I don’t see all that much from writers.  It’s one of the reason I love Taylor Swift’s music is because I love learning something new every time I hear the same song over and over again.  The hidden depths and meaning more.  

3 Examples:

Obsession - EXO 

At first glance, the song could meaning the obsession with one’s fans/Idols, or being obsessed over someone and seeing the toxicity in it.  When I heard it, I thought it was a dig at sasaengs and fans that go to far.  Then the line at the end came in and it completely startled me.

It’s can simply change the entire meaning behind the song without even thinking about it.  It’s a double meaning that also is about ego, and self reflection.  Sometimes you get so caught up in everything, In yourself, you never realize the toxic part could also be from one’s own self-reflection.  The lines that follow are all of plea’s to get away, to disappear.  It’s the last line of substance in the song that flips it on it’s head.  A cry for help because sometimes your worst enemy, the thing that goes bump in your nightmares isn’t someone else, but you.  It turns the song into a dialogue with one person fighting with their own demons.  

Power Up - Red Velvet 

Power up is one of those Red song’s that people either hate or love.  (I personally loved it)  It’s one of those songs that is great for summer and is about having fun.  But it also is about recharging yourself and going for your dreams that seem so out there.  It’s also points out that maybe the reason we haven’t gotten our dreams yet is because we just need to have fun.  

It starts off with someone who hasn’t moved since they got up, and ends with them being recharged and ready to take on the world.  It’s about changing your mindset on things.  Yeah school is boring and sucks, but you could also think of it is school is learning and you are evolving as a human being.  It’s about changing the mindset.

Into the New World - Girls Generation

Into the New World is certified Kpop Gold.  It’s the golden standard and a must for every new girl group to learn, and to be compared to.  The song is upbeat and high energy with just as much air needed to belt out the lyrics.  It’s a timeless song that has been turned into a rallying cry for protesters and Women empowerment.  Into the New World is what Girls’ Generation ended up doing for the Kpop industry as a whole for female groups, by going the tough route always working hard, facing the darkness that comes.

The lyrics in the chorus are talking about struggle and paths not yet traveled.  To a better place where even though the light is dim, we have to work towards it together, because that’s how things change.  It’s a rallying cry for hope, for endurance in tough times, and to make sure that people keep fighting for what they believe in.  That they know, they are not alone.

Jesus. Jesus Christ, that’s a lot of writing. I don’t really consider myself a writer generally and this is definitely the first time I’ve written this much this quickly. I’m going to look at my word count soon, but- I think I may have written a novel’s length of words? If we're talking about one of the best girlgroups from K-pop there is then it's definitely T-ara. Not the most talented, but T-ara makes it up with being the most determined, the most versatile, the most hardworking and the most charismatic there is. The concepts and the way they utilize it is perfect, but their imperfections and the sloppy way of performances they sometimes showcase makes them, in my book, just amazing. At the same time if they aren't sloppy during live performances, they deliver. They absolutely deliver; dancing on high heels while performing "Lovey-dovey"?, shoot me in the heart! And, oh, don't forget T-ara's discography; the hook-tastic extremely catchy songs (with help from producer Shinsadong Tiger), with simultaneously catchy, hard-hitting choreography. They're the girlgroup that, as it turns out, people didn't deserve. And they always will remain one of my personal favorite of them all.

Each member just stands out: Boram— The little cute one, who looks eternally 10 but is actually the oldest, that just charms her way through with her semi-uselessness. But her shy and very bright appearance is something we can't miss. It seems to me she's also the wise one, who is also fearless. If it wasn't for Jiyeon, she probably would've been T-ara's mascot, Qri— The beautiful elusive member, with her iconic mole on her nose, who just is there and being more useless than Boram..., but somehow makes it work because of her mysterious charm and hardworking determination. Also her smooth delivery of her dancing moves are very enticing, not to mention that she's a fashion icon and the former leader of the group. I can't help but think that she's a pro with organizing amazing parties and events. She apparently can play the bass guitar, and that just give me more proof on the theory that Qri's uselessness doesn't mean that she's not talented (She's my bias by the way). Soyeon— The idgaf Queen of the group. The one with the best singing voice. Her lackluster passion for dancing really stands out, and it's just makes her a BOSS. (BTW, she CAN dance, she just doesn't care), Eunjung— She's arguably the most talented one, the one who is the jack-of-all-trades and just is a general huge sweetheart. She also seems to be the most down-to-earth. Hyomin— She's the most seductive one. Her stares can give anyone sunstroke during the coldest winters. She's definitely also one who is the most dorky too. Jiyeon—The baby of the bunch, but arguably is the most popular too. She isn't the best singer out there, but her husky singing voice is the most distinctive. She is the one who can emulates a lot of characteristics during performances; cute, badass, all in-between, she's the one who puts the best effort in it.

It shows that being a populair, pretty face just doesn't cut it to make up an amazing group (especially after so many years), it's the way they show how distinctive, impactful, catchy, visualizing and imperfect they are in the years they spend in the group, with very good and very bad times. It makes them the way they are, without unnecessarily hyping them up. T-ara is probably the messiest K-pop group out there, but it is what makes T-ara's reign that just won't let up. (Years active: 2009-2017)

TRC Triple Threat Challenge Date: 21st April 2019 Location: Yongsan-gu Performance: Boy in Love - BTS (00:00-01:44) Outfit: x

‘Mediocre.’

When Tiger JK had called him that during the MGA’s wildcard round, Moonbok had taken it as a personal insult. A slight against the skills he’d (thought he’d) honed since he was a child. He’d left the studio even more bitter and dejected than when he was first eliminated.

Now he realizes the older man was right. And that mediocre hadn’t been meant as an insult. Rather, it was probably meant as a challenge to Moonbok, to not be so complacent and to focus.

Which is why he finds himself in Yongsan-gu at TRC’s Triple Threat Challenge. Not because Moonbok feels as though he's a triple threat, but to show Tiger JK that he finally understood what the man had told him. That he’d taken heed of his words and tried to improve himself and his skills.

He’d chosen Boy in Luv for two reasons. One, because he’d finally learned the dance off, thanks to Jiyeon’s relentless training and his own stubbornness. Two, it was a BTS song, which incorporated dancing, singing and rapping together within the first 90 seconds in a tight routine. It was one of their signature songs for a reason.

Pinning back his hair tightly, Moonbok bounces slightly on the balls of his feet, craning his head to try and get a decent look at the stage, which is (unsurprisingly) not a success. Instead, he looks around the crowd with plenty of familiar faces from the MGAs, eyes widening slightly as he spots Sohn Eric with the boy he’d been with at the Jung Community Center. For a moment Moonbok’s eyebrows furrow as he racks his brains to try and remember if the young boy had done any rapping during the MGAs before coming up blank.

“Jang Moonbok!”

At the call of his name, Moonbok feels his stomach drop slightly as he yells back an acknowledgement and makes his way towards the stage. This time, he’s careful as to how he presents himself to the audience and the judges as he climbs onto the stage; not to appear as overconfident as he’d done in the MGAs and which had been part of his reason for his elimination, but also to not look meek and self-conscious either.

Standing on the marked part of the stage, he bows lowly to the judges before straightening up and speaking with a small smile.

“I’m Jang Moonbok, living in Yongsan-gu.” The judges faces remain impassive and Moonbok looks directly at Tiger JK. Not in the confrontational way he’d stared at Hyun Bin during the wildcard round, but in a way he hopes conveys this thoughts to the TRC CEO.

‘I’ve learned. I know what you meant now.’

“I’ll be performing Boy in Luv by BTS. I hope you’ll enjoy.”

Nodding firmly as he finished speaking, Moonbok turns and takes a few steps away from the judges to give himself space to dance, hands on his hips and willing himself not to bounce on his feet. He closes eyes, breathes deep and counts down from three.

And then the music starts.

He strides forward with purpose, mentally running over everything Jiyeon had told him. Instead of a cocky smirk like in the MV, though, Moonbok wears a more serious expression. When he’d first started learning this song during the winter, he couldn’t relate much to the message in it. If anything, his thoughts were usually along the lines of ‘shut up, and just ask her out already.’ But since he’d met with Soojin, it resonated with him a lot more. Through without all of the anger and complaining in the song. And that helps guide his movements and voice, wondering if she’d made it to the audition after all.

He hopes he’s making her proud, if she’s here. Even if their relationship is still a work in progress, he hopes she can see how much he’s improved since the MGAs.

This was the rapping part that everyone remembered, it’s iconic. And it’s the part Moonbok as worked so hard on to make sure he can dance and enunciate himself properly. He wants to do this part so much justice, he wants to show Tiger JK that, while his rapping can still be improved, it has moved beyond the mediocre. Luckily, for the first half, the dancing is pretty simply, though he adds as much a personal flair as he can before carrying out the big leap forward at the face-paced nonsensical part.

He’s experimented with this particular dance move a few times, what with it being a little more complicated without other dancers to help your timing. (He had at least, factored this in when practicing)

Instead of the stepping movements used in the original dance, Moonbok swivels his hips as coyly as he dares, hand resting on his thigh, rather than his crotch. (That was just embarrassing, plus it was usually the part of the song where he’d manage to kick himself.) His voice rings out clearly, almost as pining sounding as in the original version. What is it that Soojin really wants? And is someone like him really capable of giving it to her? Moonbok prays he is, drowns out the voice of doubt as best he can through singing and dancing.

If he made mistakes, they didn’t register with him, all that he can think of now was that he didn’t cause a catastrophe like he did during Team Dream’s performance. He sang, rapped and danced and came out of it feeling happy.

An Introduction to the members of Cosmic Girls/WJSN

Cosmic Girls or WJSN made their debut as a 12 member girl group under Starship Entertainment on February 25th 2016 with their first mini album Would You Like? 

The original 12 members are Seola, Xuan Yi, Bona, Exy, Soobin, Luda, Dawon, Eunseo, Cheng Xiao, Mei Qi, Yeoreum, and Dayoung. Each member represents a star sign. 

After success and popularity on Produce 101 Yoo Yeunjung was officially added to the group on July 11th 2016 and thus Cosmic Girls became a 13 member girl group.

About Bona: She trained at Cube Entertainment for about 6 years before coming to Starship Entertainment, which is why she is close with BTOB. She tends to favor Xuan Yi and Luda, resulting in the ships BoXuan and BonLu, they’re both adorable ships but some people will fight to the death over which one is better. She and Eunseo are close and call themselves the Yeon Sisters, she and Cheng Xiao are adorable together as well.

About Exy: Before WJSN’s debut she appeared on Unpretty Rapstar Vol. 2 and her rap had everyone shooooooook. I recommend watching her performances. She became Cosmic Girls resident girl crush rapper after that, but after debut we found out she’s really girly and adorable, but we still love her anyway. She has a song called “Wipeout” and anytime the members try to suck up they’ll all start singing it. She’s cosmic girls leader but in reality she’s just the tired aunt that the youngest bother, never letting her sleep, but she loves them, although she once threatened to throw Dayoung in the fireplace.

About Soobin: She’s one of the smallest/shortest members in the group she and Luda call themselves the Pocket Girls due to their small size. Despite being so small, she is incredibly loud and once imitated a pterodactyl on weekly idol. Her nickname is the “smiling angel”. She vehemently denies Seola being her ideal type but its obvious that it’s Seola. She’s famous in the fandom for her Sunbae CF’s and her CF laugh, which is slightly terrifying.

About Luda: I’m almost positive she has the shortest training period of the members and was one of the last members chosen to be in the group. She used to get Bona to help her out, which stressed Bona out, but she would send her cute messages thanking her. Luda is the smallest of the small and is the smallest member of the group at only 155 cm (5′1″ ish). But don’t let her size fool you, she’s a savage and is often referred to as “Pocket Satan” its the small ones you have to watch out for…

Dawon

Real Name: Nam Dawon

About Dawon: She is arguably one of the most under-appreciated members in the group (along with MeiQi). One of the nicknames the fans gave her is Dawonce and for obvious reasons, the girl can sing (give her more lines Starship). She appeared on a show for under-rated girl group members called “Girls Spirit” and killed every performance. I highly recommend watching her performances to gain appreciate for her vocals and if you can make it through her Yanghwa Bridge performance without crying you’re not human. She’s one of the sweetest, most caring members of the group, and deserves lots of love. 

Eunseo

Real Name: Son Juyeon

Nationality: Korean

Position: Sub-Vocalist, Lead Dancer

About Eunseo: She’s the tallest member of the group and the members often call her a giraffe. She along with Soobin is one of the loudest members of the group. She’s the groups vitamin and has soooo much energy. She’s like a puppy, she really is. She and Cheng Xiao arguably form one of the biggest ships in the group, EunXiao, they’re precious honestly. She’s self-concious about her looks especially her nose, so please refrain from making fun of her about it, it’s not very nice and she even cried at a fan meeting over it, so just don’t. About Cheng Xiao: She’s rarely seen with both feet on the ground, she’s always mid-air doing acrobatics. She’s suuuuuper flexible. She’s also quite the meme in some of her fan photos and has earned the nickname Meme Xiao. She’s still learning Korean, but she’s improved a lot due to being on a lot of variety shows. One of her most iconic moments can be found in their reality show when she says, “Babo Wasseo! (An idiot came!)” when she meant to say the food had come. She’s an angel and we as fans must protect Xiao Xiao from the perverts on here (cough tastymotion [please report them often even if its not cosmic girls their page is disgusting]). 

Mei Qi

Real Name: Meng Mei Qi

Nationality: Chinese

Position: Main Dancer, Sub-Vocalist

About Mei Qi: Although Starship categorized her as a sub-vocalist the members often place her in the vocalist line, where she belongs. The proof of her vocal ability can be found in their pre-debut music video “All I Want for Christmas is You” her parts in that had Mariah Carey shook. Despite being one of the other under-appreciated members in the group she has been in 3 movies and was the lead role for two. Be on the lookout for Step Up 6 to come out sometime this year and support Mei Qi! She’s often called “Baby Mei Qi” and "Mei Qi Oppa" by the members.

Yeoreum

About Yeoreum: Despite being one of the youngest and one of the smaller members, this girl can eat. For most of her screen time in their reality show she was eating something. She’s adorable and although she is the oldest of the maknae (youngest) line, she still refers and introduces herself as the groups youngest member. According to the members the voice she uses and the way she speaks when she is in public or during broadcasts is not the voice she uses or the way she speaks at home. She’s also lovingly nicknamed the “Little Octopus” with Eunseo being the “Big Octopus”.

About Dayoung: She’s a part of the 99 line or the Maknae line. She gained popularity for looking like Shin Donyeop and even took a selfie with him when she appeared on a show with him (and they do look similar). About Yeonjung: According to the members Yeonjung was supposed to be one of the original 12 members of the group, but at the last minute was chosen by the company to appear on MNet’s Produce 101. She proved that she was an amazing vocalist and was the last member chosen to be in the group I.O.I. coming in 11th place. She was officially added to Cosmic Girls in July and became their 13th and youngest member. She and Soobin together have their terrifying CF laugh. She’s a sweet baby and needs to be protected at all cost (please don’t put her on a diet Starship).

last summer they had a reality show called would you like girls (i would) and it was wonderful. im rewatchign that with emma soon and since i probably wont cry the whole time bc i love them so much ill chronicle it more closely and they have the uzzu tapes which are sort of a mini reality show for them that theyve had since debut which are super cute

they also have two versions of dance practices for every title track they have, one regular one and one closeup version which is a gift

the momomo dance practice is one of the most queer and iconic things theyve ever done along with its closeup version 

in the secret dance practice they have matching outfits and its really just an Experience (closeup)

i wish has three dance practices bc they shot and uploaded one while mei qi was gone but during one of her trips back they shot a Real one along with a closeup one
