Hot take: Professors Sada and Turo may officially be considered Pokemon Professors, but they are not, role-wise, Pokemon Professors.

Hear me out. What does a Pokemon Professor, in the series, usually do? Traditionally, they're the ones who give you the opening talk about the world of Pokemon, they're the ones who give you your first Pokemon, and they maintain the region's Pokedex. (Up until Sun and Moon, where your dex can evaluate itself, they're also the one assessing it.) Sometimes one of these roles goes to someone else - in Sun and Moon, for example, Hala gives you your first Pokemon, and Sword and Shield only has Magnolia give you the Pokedex (and even then, Sonia is the one who installs it.) Especially in later generations, the Professor tends to be interested in the generational gimmick (mega evolution, Z-moves, Dynamax, Terastalizing,) but since that's only been a thing since Gen 6, it's not exactly a prerequisite. (Professor Elm, for example, is excited about the Egg you discover but his official specialty is evolution.) Frequently, if the third starter isn't otherwise accounted for, the Professor takes care of it (and Kukui does even when Hala's the one who gives you your first Pokemon.)

Okay. So. Whichever game's professor harnessed the Terastal phenomenon, making them responsible for the regional gimmick... but that's it. They (or rather, the AI) first contact you when you enter the Academy and ask you to take care of your 'Raidon, and all their communications with you are related to that. The person to give you the opening speech and your first Pokemon is Director Clavell, who also keeps the third starter. Your Pokedex was designed by Jacq, who also rewards you for completing it along with the in-dex rewards. But, okay, Sword and Shield broke the trend last time - Rose gives the opening cutscene speech and Leon gives you your first Pokemon.

Here's a thing all of these people have in common: ALL of them, one way or another, care about new Trainers and getting people excited about Pokemon. Hala's role includes testing rookie Trainers. Leon is primarily known as a Champion, but he's eager to see the player and Hop take the Gym Challenge. Clavell, of course, is the headmaster of the academy and cares deeply about his students. The opening speech from him is an Academy orientation video. Among the professors, Rowan sees your and Barry's bonds with your Pokemon and allows you to keep them. Laventon wants to make a Pokedex to make the people of Hisui less frightened of Pokemon. Even Chairman Rose cares about the League challenge being a way for new Trainers to gain skills. And this is the case with other Pokemon researchers, too. They want to spread understanding of Pokemon. They want people to discover things, and share the discoveries they made. With Pokemon Professors in specific, they're not just Pokemon researchers - their role as science educators seems to be an important part, as seen in the anime with Oak's work on TV and the Johto games giving him a radio show.

On the subject of plant names, while there have always been non-researcher characters with plant-based names, and notable researchers who don't, it's a very clear trend. It's ALSO a trend with a few important characters... namely, those people who break the Professor trend. Hala's name is the Hawaiian name for a tree. Rose is, of course, a flower. Clavell's name is from the Spanish and Catalan word for carnations. Jacq, as the Paldean Pokedex designer, gets his name from the scientific name for zinnias (which is what his Japanese name is based off of as well.) In fact, ALL the Academy teachers have plant-based names of some variety, with even the edge cases in English (Salvatore, Hassel, and Miriam) having clearer inspirations in other languages (Sage, which in Spanish is called salvia, Hassaku oranges, and the Mimosa genus of herbs - note that Miriam can shorten to "Mim".) And what about Leon, who seems like a total exception? Well, his Japanese name is Dande, and most of his names in other languages are clearly linked to dandelions. The only exception to this is B2W2's Bianca, who gives you your starter in her role as an aide to Professor Juniper (and Professors' direct assistants frequently break the plant theme, only in part because they're often the second PC.) While Sonia's plant link can be assumed to be sharing her last name with her grandmother (ie, Professor Sonia Magnolia,) Bulbapedia notes her name could be based of Sandersonia or Parkinsonia, both families of plants. All these characters who serve as mentors or teachers to new Trainers have plant names. All of them want to help people grow, to encourage discovery and caring about Pokemon and further people's understanding of Pokemon.

Which brings us back to Sada and Turo. As we know, they're the first official Professors to break the plant theme. They're the first official Professors to do NONE of the three most established Professor traits (the speech, the starters, and the Pokedex - and while Magnolia's the one who presumably designed the Galar version, Sonia's the one who installs it "as a gift from" Magnolia, meaning they're both involved.) As to their research... They designed the Tera Orb (apparently with support from Clavell,) but that's the only thing about their discoveries they've publicized. The rest of their work is kept secret. Arven's told not to reveal the 'Raidon. They've invented the furthest-reaching time machine* in the Pokemon universe, and it's top secret. Terapagos's name is censored out of their reports.

*This is not, however, the ONLY time machine in Pokemon, as GSC used that as the mechanism to allow for trade between those games and RBY. Which is hilarious, because it implies to some degree that time machines exist in the Pokemon multiverse but even if they're not exclusively CAPABLE of transporting Pokeballs they're pretty much exclusively USED to transport Pokeballs. Aside over!

The thing that defines Sada and Turo, in fact, is a sort of selfishness in their obsession with their research. They left Arven to move into Area Zero and focus on their research full-time, and he resents the 'Raidon because it represents the research his parent cares more about than him. They don't care about the ecological impact of Paradox Pokemon even when their AI does, to the point where they initiate extreme protocols to prevent the time machine from shutting down. And let's highlight the fact that their ideal assistant is a replica of themselves. The fact that they have died and been replaced with an AI can be covered up for some time - probably at least months, possibly years - because they've been so secretive and reclusive.

In other words, while Sada and Turo are technically the games' Professors, they're Professors who don't fulfill any of the functions of other games' Professors, and don't ACT like other games' Professors. The person who best fits that profile is Clavell, and to a lesser extent the other teachers at the Academy. Their names break the theme because it's the first hint of many what their true role in the game is.

(pla spoilers) you know what the more I think about it volo's kind of ?? ? ? unique as a twist villain???? I think people have mentioned it before but it's just so interesting skjdhfskjdf

like. like okay gio and guzma. kind of classic villains, cards on the table from the start. archie, maxie, same deal, just classic villains, it doesn't matter whether they're rich or whatever. then you have ghetsis and cyrus where it's REALLY obvious that they have an agenda so it's not surprising that they end up being the bad guys right??? yeah???

then you hit gen 6 and it's kind of snooze city from then on (except guzma obviously), EVERY villain is some influential/rich person who's nice to the player (at FIRST!!!!!! cue dramatic music and canned audience gasps. no one is surprised any more. sorry rose but it was you, leon, or sonia/magnolia as the villain and that suspense got shattered in 2 seconds.) like, it's the same old thing over and OVER and OVER again. I haven't played SV yet but I'm sure it'll be more of the same from the billions of spoilers per hour I've been completely unable to avoid. 🙄🙄🙄😴😴😴😴😴😴

anyways volo is like. none of that. he has a unique sort of cadence but literally who doesn't in hisui. the first man you meet is literally british. and he's NOT some important figure. he's NOT rich. he doesn't even do his job well. he's just another character -- he's LITERALLY just Some Guy. he doesn't even like..... ominously spout shit like cyrus does until the postgame.

AUH. I think he's so neat. favorite. fantastic character. complex guy. decided to destroy the world spontaneously, probably. tells laventon what he did so the player has credibility again. redeemable. both sides of "baby boy baby -- evil" in one guy.

Misty's Extended Family in Galar?!

It's theory time! 

All of Ash's past traveling companions have shown their faces somehow (yes I am counting flashbacks too). Everyone has so far except Misty (and Max). Since Misty has a huge role in the history of the anime and Ash's journey her return is inevitable. 

It makes sense the writers are saving her for last, after all she was the first person Ash met.

Legends Arceus loves to create ancestors. Iris to Leon to Laventon. Cynthia to Volo. Cyllene to Cyrus. Etc.

Since Pokemon Journeys is connecting Iris as family to Leon, why not have Misty connect to Sonia and Magnolia (grandmother and cousin)? All three look ALOT alike and share outfit design details and physical inherited traits such as eye, hair, hair tie, and outfit colors. (crop top, shade of eyes, color of hair, straps)  

This would also:

Make Misty relevant and give a reason for her to be in Galar

To be at Ash's match against Leon hanging out with her cousin

And who is one of Sonia's close friends? Nessa, the water type gym leader. Sound familiar?
