On Moon’s Relationships with the Choi Family
Excerpts from The Choi Family Entanglements, recently updated on May 13, 2023
Tumblr media
▲ Pictured: These are the only known photos of Choi Seon-gil (also written as Sun-kil Choi) and Sun Myung Moon together. They were taken around early 1955 by Eu Hyo-min, probably in Seoul. He explained that Choi had challenged her husband when she caught him having sex with two women.
From a Japanese article: “It is complicated. This is the part that has been erased from the history of the Unification Church.
Sun Myung Moon’s first wife was Choi Seon-gil LINK
She was the niece of Choi Seong-mo (see obituary below)
Choi Seon-gil’s uncle was Choi Seong-mo
He was the brother of Choi Seon-gil’s father.
Choi Seong-mo’s wife was Lee Duk-sam. [He married Lee when he was 29. Lee left Choi to follow Sun Myung Moon.]
Choi Seong-mo’s eldest daughter: Choi Soon-shil [She arrested for group sex in Moon’s church in July 1955.] LINK
Choi Seong-mo’s second daughter: Choi Soon-wha LINK [She is the mother of Sam Park, born in 1966, fathered by Sun Myung Moon.]
Choi Seong-mo’s eldest son: Choi Soon-yeong LINK [He inherited the chaebol/business]
Choi Seong-mo’s second son: Choi Soon-kwang
Choi Seong-mo’s third son: Choi Soon-kil
I can understand the feelings of Mr. Choi Seong-mo, who was the husband of Mrs. Lee Duk-sam. He pushed the police to investigate Teacher Moon, and he wanted to beat the Unification Church. At first I thought Mr. Choi Seong-mo hated Teacher Moon because Moon married Choi Seon-gil, who was Mr. Choi’s niece. But apparently he was indignant about the relationship between his wife and Teacher Moon. That is why he called Teacher Moon ‘the devil’.
It’s become a mess.”
[One of the sons, either Soon-kwang or Soon-kil, was active against Sun Myung Moon, but was heavily persecuted by the organization.]

▲ Pictured: Oh Yeong-choon is standing on the right, next to Hak Ja Han and her mother Hong Soon-ae. Oh was involved in the selection of Hak Jan Han as the wife of Sun Myung Moon. This photograph was taken at around the time of that selection. Oh raised money to get Moon out of jail in 1955, following the Ewha Womans University sex scandal. LINK
Oh Yeong-choon witnessed to Lee Duk-sam in Busan. After Lee Duk-sam joined, she brought her two daughters, Choi Soon-shil and Choi Soon-wha, into the UC. Choi Soon-yeong who was younger resisted recuitment, even though he was under pressure from his mother to join. Moon took the daughters to Seoul to be with him in the fall of 1953. It has been reported that he “restored” the two of them in a small hotel near the Seoul train station. Soon-shil went to Yonsei University and Soon-wha to Ewha Womans University. In 1964 Soon-wha traveled to Washington, DC, to go to university there. She wanted to get away from Moon. In 1965, during his first world tour, Moon spent three months in DC having sex with Soon-wha, aka Annie. He did not leave the US until he knew she was pregnant. Sam Park was born on January 28, 1966.

K-dramas have a theme for about anything a viewer is looking for. There are suspense, dramas, thrillers, and highly popular love stories. Some may not want to admit it, but love stories involving falling in love with the boss is a guilty pleasure.
RELATED: 10 Best Time Travel K-Dramas, Ranked (According To IMDb)
Maybe it involves the shy new girl who catches the eye of the handsome and rich CEO. In some cases, the power play is reversed. Regardless, K-dramas have a way of hooking in audiences with their dynamic storylines. If looking for some new K-dramas to add to your roster of must-watch, look no further. Here's a list to get you started.
Updated on April 22nd, 2021, by Gabriela Silva: There's a storyline for every K-drama fan to enjoy from thrillers and the supernatural to unique romances. To add a level of intrigue to a love story what better way than to center it around the blossoming love of a worker and their boss. K-dramas are no stranger to the storyline theme and are quite popular. It's a fairytale story that fans wish happened in real life.
15 Oh My Ghost (2015)
Tumblr media
Oh My Ghost is one of the most recognized supernatural dramas. It focuses on three main characters and the main love story is between a young woman and her boss who's a famous chef. There's a catch. Na Bong-Sun (Park Bo-Young) is shy and timid and has a huge crush on her boss. She can also see spirits.
One day, she's possessed by a young lustful female spirit who believes the only way to go to the afterlife is by losing her virginity. Being the puppet of the ghost, Bong-Sun now becomes a firecracker and confident woman who catches her boss's eye.
14 Radiant Office (2017)
Tumblr media
The 2017 drama, Radiant Office has multiple elements that make it a fun boss-employee storyline. Eun Ho-Won (Go Ah-Sung) is down on her luck looking for work and attempts suicide. At the hospital, she learns she terminally ill but succeeds at landing a job.
With a new purpose in life, Ho-Won takes on her new job with full force. Her superior and boss, Seo Woo-Jin (Ha Seok-Jin) thinks she's a huge pain in the neck and often bickers. Their odd relationship might just turn into something more.
13 Protect The Boss (2011)
Tumblr media
This K-drama doesn't have the typical boss characteristics seen in other shows. Protect the Boss centers around Cha Ji-Heon (Ji Sung), a childish director at DN Group. He soon meets his match in his new secretary, Noh Eun-Seol (Choi Kang-Hee).
Eun-Seol is determined to not lose her first professional job and gives it her all. Her kind and spunky demeanor start to attract Ji-Heon. That's not all, the drama has a love triangle between Ji-Heon and his rival and cousin, Cha MuWwon (Kim Jae-Joong).
12 Master's Sun (2013)
Tumblr media
Master's Sun is another K-drama with a supernatural base. Tae Kong-Shil (Gong Hyo-Jin) gains the ability to see ghosts after a bizarre accident. Her abilities leave her unable to keep a solid job. Kong-Shil works as a cleaning lady at Kingdom's, a conglomerate company, shopping mall.
She soon meets the company's cold and distant CEO, Joo Joong-Won (So Ji-Sub). In a turn of events, whenever Long-Shil touches Joong-Won, the ghosts disappear. After some begging, Joong-Won stays by her side in return for her help in recovering something stolen from him.
11 Jugglers (2017)
Tumblr media
2017 was a good year to binge-watch multiple boss-employee relationship K-dramas. Jugglers followed the trend and revolved around a secretary and her cold as ice boss. Jwa Yoon-Yi (Baek Jin-Hee) is a devoted and diligent secretary whose put on hold when her boss's wife accuses her of having an affair with her husband.
On the other end, Nam Chi-Won (Daniel Choi) is assigned to be the managing director at Yoon-Yi's company. Yoon-Yi becomes his secretary. Chi-Won suffers from childhood trauma and is indifferent to socializing. After Yoon-Yi gets drunk at a dinner party, Chi-Won takes her home and realizes she lives in the place where his trauma originated. Seeing the 'tenant wanted' sign on her door, he becomes her neighbor to overcome his past.
10 My Secret Romance (2017)
Tumblr media
What happens when you meet your one-night stand three years later? To make matters worse he happens to be your new boss. Lee Yoo-Mi (Song Ji-Eun) is insecure about herself but has to attend her mother's weddings. She meets Cha Jin-Wook (Sung Hoon). They're less than cordial with one another but soon start to feel an attraction and spend the night.
Yoo-mi is unaware of who he really is and flees the following morning. Years later she is hired to be his nutritionist. Jin-Wook changed his ways after that night and takes over his father's company and never forgot Yoo-mi. He tries to romance her and get to admit her feelings for him. Interwoven is a storyline involving Yoo-mi's baby brother that is blown out of proportion on who the father is.
9 Rich Man (2018)
Tumblr media
Rich Man might also be known for its original Japanese television drama version, Rich Man, Poor Woman. The K-drama was a 2018 remake that did well on television. The show takes an interesting route with the main male character. The CEO of a popular IT company has a facial recognition disability.
This has caused him the inability to recognize his first love. At an employee recruitment meeting, he picks on a particular girl with photogenic memory. She stands up to the mean CEO and says something that catches his interest. She ends up working for the company and helping the CEO.
8 Strong Girl Bong-soon (2017)
Tumblr media
Strong Girl Bong-Soon is a highly popular K-drama and has a lot of the same characteristics of an employee falling in love with their boss. A young girl is born with unexplainable superhuman strength. It's more of a family trait. This leads to an intriguing storyline.
After beating up some bullies, she is hired by a rich CEO of a gaming company. While having a crush on her friend, she starts to realize who she really has feelings for. All while protecting her CEO from a possible threat and kidnapper.
7 My Shy Boss (2017)
Tumblr media
Sometimes opposites attract in the most bizarre way possible. My Shy Boss or Introverted Boss follows the tumultuous relationship between a CEO and his new employee. The CEO of a public relations firm is the exact opposite of what one expects.

He's highly introverted, shy, sensitive, and can come off as cold. On the other hand, the company hires a new employee who is extroverted, loud, and not afraid to speak her mind. She takes an interest in the CEO and wants to uncover who he really is under his hood.
6 Lucky Romance (2016)
Tumblr media
Audiences will surely have a good laugh with this K-drama with its peculiar antics. In Lucky Romance, a 26-year-old attractive woman is highly superstitious believing she was born unlucky. She follows every precaution possible and consults a shaman about her sister. The only way to save her? She has to sleep with a man born in the year of the tiger.
She soon meets a CEO and genius game developer. Who happens to fit her criteria. Their personalities clash, but Shim Bo-Nui (Hwang Jung-Eum) is determined to see save her sister even if it means wooing her boss.
5 Level Up (2019)
Tumblr media
Level Up follows a lot of the typical boss-employee storyline details; mixed in with some drama. This CEO specializes in helping reconstruct failing companies. He takes on a company called Joybuster despite his previous childhood trauma with gaming.
As the new CEO of the company, he soon meets its head designer. A passionate and sweet young woman clashes heads with a cold and meticulous boss. Will they put their differences aside and complete their new game and maybe fall in love?
4  Hotel Del Luna (2019)
Tumblr media
Hotel Del Luna is a fan favorite amongst K-dramas. It mixes the supernatural with some dramatic romance. Jang Man-Wol (Lee Ji-Eun) is moody and bad-tempered for having to run Hotel Del Luna for the past thousands of years. She must atone for her indiscretions and change her attitude.
The hotel is only visible to souls, ghosts, and humans at special times of the year. Things heat up when the hotel gets a new general manager due to a contract signed by his father. Gu Chan-sung (Yeo Jin-goo) is a stoic MBA graduate who has to confront his fear of ghosts. He soon changes his demeanor and helps melt Man-Wol's heart and keep her safe.
3 She Was Pretty (2015)
Tumblr media
She Was Pretty is a fun roller coaster ride for anyone who watches. Fans of Parasite will recall the lead actor in this drama.  Two childhood friends grow up on the opposite ends of the spectrum for both success and looks. Kim Hye-jin (Hwang Jung-Eum) ended up having her father's red cheeks and frizzy hair, while Ji Sung-Joon (Park Seo-Joon) becomes a strikingly handsome man.
RELATED: 10 K-Dramas With A Vampire Storyline, Ranked (According To IMDb)
They decide to reconnect but Hye-jin backs out seeing how much they've changed. Instead, he mistakes her best friend for her creating a fake love story. Sung-Joon then becomes her boss at her magazine company unaware of who she really is. Will Sung-Joon recognize his first love and fall head over heels? Or will her co-worker woo her away?
2 What's Wrong With Secretary Kim (2018)
Tumblr media
What's Wrong With Secretary Kim is at the top of the list and regarded as one of the best romance K-dramas when it comes to the employee-boss dynamic. Kim Mi-so (Park Min-young) has been Lee Young-Joon's (Park Seo-Joon) right-hand woman for years as his secretary. Her announcement of resignation doesn't sit well with her cold and professional boss.
He then starts to see her in a different light beyond the professional. There's jealousy, romantic gestures, and changing of heart in his drama. Not to mention there are some steamy kissing scenes. Young-Joon will do whatever he can to keep Mi-so in his life.

- yideum escolheu Hyun Soo Ah [My Id Is A Gangnam Beauty -  JTBC - 2018]
- sageukistheshit escolheu  Soho [Hometown Legends: Gumiho - KBS - 2009]
- lavenderbyun escolheu Bu Ja [Hwayugi - tvN - 2017]
-  michyeosseo escolheu Seo Ki Ha [The Story of the First King's Four Gods | The Legend - MBC - 2007]
-  wooricat escolheu Mo Yeon [Arang and the Magistrate - MBC - 2012]
- aboutdoramas escolheu  Shin Ji Hyun [49 Days - SBS - 2011]
- abstractoldsoul escolheu Han Na Young [Cheo Yong - OCN - 2014]
Ela fala tudo que vem à sua cabeça, em parte porque se acostumou com o fato de ninguém a ouvir.
- tinytrashqueen escolheu Seon Mi e Bu Ja [Hwayugi - tvN - 2017]
- unnursvanablog escolheu Bu Ja [Hwayugi - tvN - 2017]
Eu também só queria dar um salve para Lee Se Young e sua personagem em Hwayugi, porque de fato ela era a melhor coisa sobre essa série idiota e seu personagem merecia mais.
- kpopgerapitico escolheu Park Seon Young [Bubblegum - tvN - 2015]
Monstros às vezes vivem dentro de nossas próprias famílias. E às vezes são gentis na superfície. Fazem coisas boas para as pessoas, tratam a maioria das pessoas com respeito. Mas, com alguns poucos, essa fachada cai.
- youholdthewater escolheu  Han Seo Jin e Kim Joo Young [Sky Castle - JTBC - 2018]
- gudongmae escolheu Shin Soon Ae [Oh My Ghost - tvN - 2015]
- brainless-out escolheu Park Hee Young [Come And Hug Me - MBC - 2018]
-  sexyglances escolheu  Park Cha Oh Reum [Miss Hammurabi - JTBC -  2018]

Completed Kdramas.
Kdramas I’ve completed *In order of how I watched them!* and how I rate them..chat me up about ANY drama listed, or recommend more! :) **SOME CONTAIN SLIGHT SPOILERS!**
1. Strong Woman Do Bong Soon-- 10/10 **This was my introduction to the amazing world of kdrama, and oh boy did it hook me!! The chemistry between Bo Young and Hyung Sik will forever be etched into my brain!
2. The Heirs-- 8/10 **The most compelling thing in this show for me was Kim Woo Bin.  This was my first intro to second male lead syndrome.
3. Hwarang-- 7/10 **Not gonna lie, started this because of Kim Taehyung, and happily finished it because the drama brought more than I expected.  It was slow in places, but wrapped up well.
4. High Society-- 5/10 ** Not my cup of tea to be honest...I much preferred the second leads’ relationship over the first leads’.  Even Park Hyungsik wasn’t enough to keep me enthralled...this was a drama I completed just to get it over with.
5. Oh My Ghostess-- 10/10. PARK BO YOUNG IS DAEBAK! I seriously love this woman...she was able to portray two distinct personality types, sometimes nearly simultaneously. Also, Jo Jung-suk as Chef Kang made my heart race!
6. Healer-- 9/10 ** This would have gotten a ten had they wrapped up the loose ends a little better, alas, they did not...Also, this was my introduction to Ji Chang Wook.  His character is just amazing and JCW depicts him so well!
7. Emergency Couple-- 10/10 **This is still one of my favorites.  I liked the progression between Chang Min and Jin Hee, and how it wasn’t an immediate reconciliation when they met back up.  They both had themselves to find and were mature (most of the time) about giving eachother the space needed to make it work.
8. Weight-lifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo-- 10/10. **I loved everything about this drama. The story line, the actors, the chemistry between the leads, and I really loved Ji Il-joo as Joo-hyuk’s best friend :)
9. She Was Pretty 7/10 ** CHOI SI-WON!!! Kim Shin Hyeok is my favorite character in all of dramaland...unfortunately he was second male lead, and my favorite part about the drama.  All of the actors portrayed their characters well, I just didn’t connect with many of them throughout the whole show.
10. Fated to Love You 8/10 ** There were times when Gun was literally too much to handle..Also, episode 12 made me take a break from kdramas for a while and reflect on my life choice to become addicted to something like kdramas.  Before this episode I realized that I really was spoiled in the shows I watched not having scenes that literally made my heart feel constricted the way this one did.
11. To the Beautiful You-- 7/10 ** I liked the show overall, but thought that Sulli would never pass as a male... to me she still screamed female while dressed and living as a male. Kang Ha-Neul was the shinning point for me :)
12. Angel Eyes-- 7/10 ** KANG HA-NEUL! :)  The show was predictable at times which made it kind of drag on in places, and the female lead was frustrating af, but I enjoyed it overall.  Although the teenage years were only in a few episodes (and then some flashbacks) I think the pairing was much more endearing than the adults.  I also really liked the chemistry between Kang Ha-nuel and Name Ji-Hyun
13. Doctors-- 6/10** Not my cup of tea....Park Shin Hye was great, but it was kind of boring to me..The guest starring of Ji Soo was nice though :)
14. Shopping King Louie-- 9/10. I LOVED this drama.  I thought the character of Louie was endearing in how he didn’t understand much of the outside world (being rich and all) and relied on Bok-Shil to basically survive. Again, loved Nam Ji-Hyun in this.
15. Pinocchio-- 8/10 **HELLO LEE JONG-SUK! :) My favorite thing, other than watching the evolution of the leads’ relationship was watching the relationship between Dal-po and his brother, Jae-Myung.  I think the character development of Jae-Myung felt the most real to me.  How circumstances turned him into a killer and how he handled the aftermath of that, letting Dal-po settle things legally.
16. W (Two Worlds)-- 8/10 **Back to back Lee Jong-Suk.  I liked the complexities of this drama. There were times when I really wasn’t sure what was coming next and the suspense kept me returning to my computer as soon as possible to finish it!
17. Marriage, Not Dating-- 8/10 **Not gonna lie, the more I watching this, the more I WANTED To hate it, but I didn’t.  I’m not sure why I wanted to...I think it became semi predictable and some of the characters were hard pills to swallow, but damnit I was rooting so hard for Gi-tae and Jang-mi until the very end.
18. Love From Another Star 10/10 ** Let me count the ways...This was so endearing, and funny, and melancholic, and in places, SO FUCKING SAD. I will happily admit I cried, and when I inevitably watch it again, I’ll cry again.

Moon seeking to move to the U.S. in 1965?
Tumblr media
▲ Pictured: Moon on his 1965 tour in D.C.
What was happening in 1965?
Both Young Oon Kim and Sang Ik Choi traveled the world with Sun Myung Moon on his first world tour.  The world tour wrapped up in October 1965, with Moon returning to Korea on October 10.
March 31-May 3,1965, Moon stayed at Bo Hi Pak’s home in northern Virginia, a suburb of Washington D.C., and frequently met with Annie Choi, mother of Sammy Pak. Annie Choi was not related to Sang Ik Choi. Her family has a long, painful history with Moon. Moon would not leave until he was sure that Annie Choi was pregnant. Moon went on this tour without his young wife Hak Ja Han, though she joined him on his 1969 tour.
After spending time in Korea in 1964,  and following Moon on his world tour, Young Oon Kim moved to D.C. following the tour. At this point she had already laid ground for the Bay Area church, following her stint in Oregon. The Pacific Northwest was largely under David (Sang Chul) Kim's leadership.
Sang Ik Choi (also known as Papasan) had been on Moon’s World Tour, along with Young Oon Kim. Choi arrived in the U.S., settling in San Francisco, on November 12, 1965. On December 11, Yun Soo Lim and Kenji (Daikon) Ohnuki arrived in San Francisco, reuniting with Choi. Prior to this, both Lim and Ohnuki spent several months in D.C.
Many said that this 1965 trip destroyed Papasan Choi’s faith. He had allegedly seen many things during this tour that disturbed the holy image of Moon. It is likely that neither Young Oon Kim or Papasan Choi had really believed in Moon as the messiah at this point, if they ever did. They seemed to have ulterior motives when it came to their membership, considering their presence in the UC for decades while privately claiming they no longer believed in Moon in the orthodox sense, as well as their countless government connections.
In 1965, Bo Hi Pak founded the KCFF, with Eisenhower as the honorary president. Both Radio of Free Asia and the Little Angels dance troupe were under the KCFF.
Moon was preparing the way for his move to the U.S. in 1965:
"There are many Christians who anxiously desire to see the day of the coming of the Lord. If the Lord comes by the clouds of heaven, I know there will be no problem for this present world to accept him. But it is also possible that even after the Lord has come through the clouds of heaven, and even after people meet him and realize that he is not their concept of the Messiah, some may not accept him at once. As I mentioned already, it is of vital importance that we must live with him.-- live with the Messiah, with the Lord, with the One. It is not only important to see him and meet him but it is important to stay with him. This is of ultimate importance. Therefore, America today has to develop a new way of life in which there is room for him.”
Moon spoke these words at the UC Headquarters in D.C. on March 12, 1965, one month after arriving in the U.S. for his tour.
It was on this tour that Moon was able to meet Eisenhower. Eisenhower allegedly told Moon during this meeting, "Man is a spiritual being. We must bring to bear a greater moral strength based on moral law to stand against the communists. It will take the vigor of youth to do this."
It seems he was hoping to eventually move to the U.S. It may have seen evident that providence was turning this way, as Bo Hi Pak had created a substantial political foundation and it was evident that his message was catching on, with communities that were effectively building a financial/economic foundation. Could he have also been hoping to continue providential sex with Annie Choi, or maybe even making her his primary wife while in the U.S.?

Moon’s fourth wife, Won-pok Choi:
The Korean language magazine, Sunday Journal, and Kirsti Nevalainen’s book, Ritual Sex in the Unification Church, both list Mrs Choi as Moon’s fourth wife. At least one Korean authority on new religions stated that Hak Ja Han, who came after Won-pok Choi, was Moon’s fifth wife. Won-pok Choi left her husband and children to join the UC in December 1954.

Hee-jin Moon was born on August 17, 1955, in Tokyo.  Hee-jin was traveling on a train in Chungbuk Province on August 1, 1969. He was leaning out of a window as the train approached Maepo station – his head hit a trackside post and he was killed.

It is probably her sister, Soon-shil Choi (white top and black skirt) sitting next to her. Soon-shil was to be True Mother in 1959, but she left the church before the wedding ceremony. Moon was beyond furious. He had wanted Soon-shil and Annie Soon-wha to be his ‘Leah and Rachel’ wives with himself in the ‘Jacob’ position. LINK

However, other banks disagree, stating that even the best credit evaluation of AAA could not bring such rates.Suspicions have come up that SM Entertainment's Lee Soo Man's ties to Choi Soon Shil might have brought about the incredibly low rates. Suicide Prevention Awareness: 12 Korean Celebrities Who Tragically Committed Suicide
Tumblr media
*Please be aware that this article is a special topic for September, the National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. While we are making the effort to handle this topic with care, some people may find the topic triggering. Suicide prevention hotlines and resources are listed at the bottom of this article.  While this entire month is dedicated to suicide prevention awareness, September 10th in particular marks World Suicide Prevention Day. Regardless of your position or status in life, depression is something that can affect any of us.  At times, depression, anxiety, and other issues can make life seem truly unbearable, even driving some people to consider suicide. This is something that can affect anyone around the globe, even famous singers or actors. Due to our love of Korean culture, it's easy to focus on the bright and positive aspects of the entertainment industry, forgetting the challenges and pain that can accompany life in the spotlight. When you add this to the normal demands of being a young person these days, it is easy to understand why some people feel so overwhelmed. In fact, suicide is the leading cause of death among Korean people in their teens, twenties, and thirties. While some advancement is finally being made concerning mental health issues in Korea, there is still a long way to go. In order to bring awareness to the rising number of suicides in Korea and around the world, we wanted to talk about some of the most famous celebrities who have chosen this tragic method of coping with their personal issues. We also want to encourage you that you should reach out for help if you're feeling suicidal or know someone who is. If we can assist in any way at WTK, please let us know. Last year, we lost one of our staff members to suicide. As such, suicide prevention is a topic important to our hearts. For further resources, we would also like to refer you to the radio broadcast we held in honor of SHINee's Jonghyun. The broadcast is divided into different segments, when one segment dealing specifically about what to do when you or a loved one is feeling suicidal. Click here to listen to the broadcast. You can find the different topics and their time stamps in the description of the video. In the meanwhile, let's look back at some of the notable cases of suicide in Korea. We remember these lives and mourn their loss after they succumbed to such a horrible thing. Suicide itself is 100% preventable, and we encourage you to reach our for help today! Park Yong Ha (1977-2010)
Tumblr media
If you’re a hardcore drama fan, you will have seen this guy somewhere. Park Yong Ha debuted in 1994 and rose to fame in the early 2000s with Winter Sonata, the famous drama co-starring Bae Young Jun and Choi Ji Woo. He became a hit actor and singer in both Korea and Japan. After the successful drama A Man’s Story and his movie The Scam in 2009, the actor was scheduled to star in Comrades in July 2010. Sadly, however, he didn't make it that far. Speculations still surface as to why a successful and well-known actor like Park Yong Ha would make that choice. Some said he was under too much stress after he started managing his own company, others claimed the news of his father’s malignant cancer was the reason, and some simply cried depression. Whether one or more of these reasons contributed to the decision, no one will ever fully know what went on in the mind of the 33-year-old actor. Lee Eun Joo (1980-2005)
Tumblr media
Steadily making a name for herself as an actress, Lee Eun Joo killed herself after leaving a note apologizing to her mother for her decision. The actress appeared in many popular films, including Bungee Jumping of Their Own and The Scarlet Letter. She was young and full of potential. So, why? Was it depression? Was it "insomnia after her nude scenes in The Scarlet Letter" as some people claimed? No one will ever truly know. U;Nee (1981-2007)
Tumblr media
This beautiful and promising young woman debuted in 2003 as a dance-pop singer. With her debut album, she instantly become well-received by both fans and critics alike. The young artist was also a rapper and went on to make her acting debut as well. A normally shy person, her label soon wanted her to transition into a more sexy genre of music, pushing her to get plastic surgery and changing her looks. Although it wasn't determined that she suffered from depression until after her death, things she had written on her social media page later came to light that indicated she felt overwhelmed and without purpose. After attending a church service in the morning, she decided to take her own life at the age of 25. Ahn Jae Hwan (1972-2008)
Tumblr media
Money issues— including a failed business and debtors storming in— was thought to be the reason behind Ahn Jae Hwan’s death. I watched him in Sunflower, and he was one of the few things I liked about the show. The rising star killed himself by carbon monoxide poisoning while sitting in his car, first leaving an apology note to his newlywed wife. What makes this so sad is that the actor wasn't found for several weeks, leading people to wonder what took his loved ones so long to find him. Kim Jonghyun (1990-2017)
Tumblr media
On December 18, 2017, beautiful and talented artist Kim Jonghyun of SHINee made the decision to end his life. A person who had been very public with his long-term struggle with depression, he left behind several texts and notes that gave a glimpse into his mental state at the time. Asking his sister to tell him he did well and explaining to a friend that he just wasn't supposed to have been a celebrity, he talked about his "devouring depression" and feelings of hopelessness. A beautiful soul who had touched countless lives with his music, art, writing, and more, Jonghyun's death was one of the most shocking and high-profile suicides among Korean celebrities. Jeong Da Bin (1980-2007)
Tumblr media
Most famous for Rooftop Cat, Jeong Da Bin committed suicide in the bathroom of her boyfriend’s apartment. The boyfriend stated that Jeong Da Bin was depressed because of lack of work, imprisonment of her manager, and cyber attacks on her appearance. With only the boyfriend's words to go on, no one will ever truly know what motivated this lovely young lady to take her life that day in his bathroom. Kim Seok Hyun (1979-2009)
Tumblr media
After getting a late start in his career, Kim Seok Hyun played minor roles in few productions on TV. You might recognise his face without being able to recall exactly where you know him from. At the age of 30, he took his life in his own home. Again, all that was left after his suicide were speculations on what led him to take this extreme measure. Many said it was due to depression from lack of work, but the public will never know. Jang Ja Yeon (1982-2009)
Tumblr media
Remember the three bullies in Boys Over Flowers? Jang Ja Yeon was one of them. She landed a CF and few other offers because of the popular drama. She was described as a rising star— beautiful and talented. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, she committed suicide in her family's home. It seemed to be a result of depression, but this time, a sponsor scandal was also involved. In other words, it was said she was being sexually abused by the rich investors and executives of her company due to her "slave" contract. The actress left a long letter before her death, naming the culprits and mentioning that they had physically and sexually abused her under the permission of her agent. The reason behind her suicide definitely sounds plausible, but we may never know for sure as the truth never fully came to light. In the end, only the life of a poor young girl was snatched away. Meanwhile, the agent is still alive and prospering. Woo Seung Yeon (1983-2009)
Tumblr media
Failed auditions, anxiety, and depression are what led to the tragic suicide of this young star. In fact, she was already receiving treatment for depression. The ironic part is before her suicide, she sent her sister a message that said, "I’m sorry." She uploaded the word "goodbye" to her personal page and changed the background music to a song called ''Sorry." Her family knew she was getting worse and said so. Sadly, it seems that Woo Seung Yeon knew she needed help, but when that help didn’t arrive, she simply gave up. Roh Moo-hyun (1946-2009)
Tumblr media
This low-income farmer was inspired to become a human rights laywer who would eventually even serve jail time as he faced against the powerful to fight for the average men. As such, it should come as no surprise that this man would eventually turn his eyes to politics in an attempt to change his world. He eventually was elected and served as the South Korean president between 2003 to 2008 and gained great popularity among the younger generation in particular. Politics aside, it wasn't until he had retired and was living a quiet life that someone brought up some suspicion that he had accepted a bribe in the past. The charge ignited an investigation and brought him into media's scrutiny in what his own party denounced as unfair and politically-motivated. Suffering from poor health already, the former politician decided to take his own life, leaving behind a note saying that he couldn't face the future and asking people to not blame anyone else for his death. Choi Jin Shil (1968-2008)
Tumblr media
Choi Jin Shil will always be named as an iconic actress. "There was no other talent like hers," many people have stated. She starred in many films and drama and was called "The Nation’s Actress." However, her personal life was not easy. Her road manager died. She got married, but her husband turned out to be abusive. She filed for divorce and went through a public custody war, losing sponsors as a result. Her friend Ahn Jae Hwan (included earlier on this list) then committed suicide, and she was even accused of being involved in that. Things got really dirty and it was hard to cope with all of this in the public eye, so she opted out of the situation by choosing suicide, leaving behind her two young children. Tragically, her high-profile suicide resulted in a temporary rise in suicides in Korea for the month after her death. Approximately 700 more people killed themselves in that month than in previous times. The entire tragic situation led the South Korean government to take a stronger stance against malicious and libelous comments from netizens since it was found to have been such a factor in Ms. Choi's suicide. Choi Jin Young (1970-2010)
Tumblr media
Choi Jin Shil’s younger brother gained interest from producers because of the fame of his sister. He landed a small role or two, but people eventually lost interest in him as an actor. As a result, he fell into severe depression. He unsuccessfully attempted suicide a few times, but less than two years after the death of his sister, he managed to succeed. He did not blame his sister or his family, but constantly being compared to a highly successful sibling is definitely not the easiest way to live. My humble psychological analysis is that Choi Jin Young had lived completely under the dome of his sister. So when she committed suicide, he couldn’t go on and did the same. He even chose the same suicide method as his sister when he ended his own life.
Tumblr media
Some readers might be wondering, "What can we do about it? Why are you telling us this?" Simply put, we can all do something. When we have opinions that aren't so nice, we can keep them to ourselves. We can report the malicious comments by other internet users. We can help clean up the negative comments and prevent whatever terrible effect it has on celebrities. After all, they’re people just like us and each one struggles with their own issues that are often compounded by hateful, mean comments. More than anything, just take a stand when you see malicious comments online since those comments can be such an emotional and mental strain on celebrities. While these beloved celebrities succumbed to suicide, many more have been able to beat it! Celebrities like Brian Joo, Lee Sang Min, SHINee's Key, and many more have all admitted to self-harm or suicidal thoughts. In addition, several of our own staff members at WTK are also attempted suicide survivors. If we can make it, so can you! Please know you are not alone. We should understand that depression can affect us all, but suicide is never the answer. No matter how terrible your own situation is, ending your life is not the best way to deal with your problems. If you or a loved one struggles with suicidal thoughts, please get help immediately by calling 1-800-273-8255 or chatting online with a counselor from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. For international suicide prevention, please view the list of crisis centers and suicide hotlines in your own country by clicking HERE. If you suspect one of your family members or friends is suicidal, click here to see a list of common signs of suicidal thoughts. You are not alone! Get help today. Let's all work together to stop suicide.
