One unexpected delight about the Harris/Walz ticket is that by learning about Walz, I’m also learning all these delightful little Midwesternisms (as a New Englander) that I never knew before.
And I just have to say how refreshing it is to be learning little details about the rest of my country that are delightful and heartwarming instead of depressing and demoralizing.
Basically, ever since Trump entered the 2016 race, I’ve lamented learning “too much” about my fellow Americans. Too much about how bigoted or closed minded they can be, too much about how whacky conspiracy theories can take hold, seen too many think pieces about how we have to learn and understand and appeal to this wide swathe of Americans with utterly hateful views as if they’re the Holy Grail of political success.
I’ve been so, so tired of only learning things about other parts of America that just make me want to section off the whole country by region so I don’t need to care about some of these awful opinions anymore or be breathlessly informed on the latest hysterical bigotry sweeping the country.
So to just see Midwesterners excited about Walz, taking about the little details that make them proud of him, that make him one of their own, like Midwestern politeness or casseroles or Midwestern Dad practicality is just…nice. It’s nice to learn things about other people, other parts of my country again that are heartwarming or funny or just generally positive after seeing so much divisiveness. I hope this will resonate with other voters too and we can put this long exhausting nightmare behind us.
