hi!! for the ask game: 20, 23, 36 !
Hi Conner!!
20. Do you work on a single project or many at the same time? How does that work for you?
Several at the same time! The way I write is that I can only write when all the stars are aligned. And then I don't decide where the stars decide to point. Or, in other words, I get bored with things very quickly. So, switching projects, changing gears, help me stay focused.
23. Dialogue or description? Why is the other one so hard?
Description! And dialogue is hard because uuuuuh, I'm not personally good at it. Social awkwardness. That's why I prefer writing. And I love to write pages about a landscape, a scene or a character's emotions and thoughts. Dialogues need to be especially tailored to the character, to the situation, to the tone... Balancing all the elements to convey a line of dialogue that will sound authentic is hard.
36. How do you come up with fic titles? What's the one you're most proud of?
I think of what the fic wants to say, what character it is centred on, and I look for quotes, or references to the source material, or song lyrics. I think my favourite might be Golden Light On The Roofs, my post-movie DDLJ (Bollywood movie) fic, because it's not a reference to the movie, not a song lyric or quote, not something about the characters; it's the vibe of the story. And the vibe that movie gives off too, at least for me. And also I just really love this one.
Thanks for the ask!

Hi, do you think there’s a divide in the way we consume media as Indians in India and Indian diaspora outside India? Like on one hand, I know that since the Indian diaspora has not been represented in Hollywood or western cinema, turning towards old Indian cinema (especially the 90s) and being comforted is understandable but on the other side, the number of people just on this site who keep romanticising Padmavati or old movies like DDLJ is a little annoying? Like sure, 25 years ago DDLJ may have been romantic but today any woman who would watch it would find it creepy on many levels. I get that old movies will be problematic because of “the times” but that doesn’t mean they need to be romanticised today? It’s also very annoying how the movies that are always acknowledged are terrible period dramas like all of SLB’s movies or Kalank (that was bad) but not movies like Pink or Thappad or Ludo or Pagglait like there are so many new movies that are so good in terms of content and their message. In the same breadth, there’s also this weird obsession with the same 5 light skinned actresses? Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone etc. and maybe I’m biased because the current generation of mainstream actors like Sara Ali Khan and Ananya Pandey are just not that good in their craft but I’m still seeing them be idolised for their craft and not actresses like Konkona Sen Sharma, Sayani Gupta, Kirti Kulhari and so many more. Sorry for dumping this on you - you don’t have to respond, just wanted to know what you think about this.
You make some fair points. I've myself always been singularly neutral about this perceived "divide" between commercial and indie cinema; if a film is good I'll watch it, whether it centers around societal issues or over the usual guy and girl falling in love (think of movies like Jab We Met that have a very run-of-the-mill storyline but near-perfect execution). Also, for a country like ours, Bollywood is often a very important source of escapism and idyllic bliss- say, perhaps, my parents who have tough, bleary, underpaying jobs as healthcare workers; they return home late at night to watch Katrina Kaif in a comedy- not a film about child marriage or marital discord....and we should see the importance of both sides without immediately dismissing one as qualitatively inferior.
But like yeah. SLB movies are hollow substantially. not our fault people think "India" means tanishq jewellery and only the north/north-west.
That being said, I think it's natural to be irritated when people perceive Bollywood as this cesspool of tacky garish screenplays and loads of dramatic songs in mustard fields, while just ignoring the vast plethora of problems that some of these so-called iconic Hindi films have perpetuated, and also sidelining all the good, less mainstream projects. As for the actors discourse, the current generation of nepo-kids are mediocre af, absolutely agreed. But there's really nothing you can do about A listers; star power does count and will continue to count forever in showbiz, like it or not (not a contemporary matter btw, look at the Kapoors, look at Suchitra Sen ffs) and I don't want to go on a tangent about my complicated take on charisma and opportunity.
Finally, I take greater issue with people thinking the end-all representation of strong brown women are the light skinned elite A-lister actresses, however I think it's important to hate the game and not hate the gamer (especially in a complex scenario like the Indian movie industry, which is pretty shitty to women, even the women who supposedly make it big). I have seen multiple posts which somehow think the problem of colourism is rooted in one or two celebrities instead of societal beauty standards and the way big corporations and the indian govt. pay the celebrities to endorse products and ideas that perpetuate terribly regressive stances (from fairness creams to right-wing propaganda, lol). What I'm trying to get at is: it's not really a black-and-white job of indie good, big budget blockbuster bad, if we need to criticise bollywood, the conversation won't be very simple or straightforward.

Heart-Warming Hindi Movie Songs
The advent of technology has created a huge platform called the Internet to download heart-warming Hindi movie songs. There are many music websites and online sources from where Hindi songs lovers can download the entire range existing in the music industry. Some of these websites are completely free but the quality of songs may not be good at times because a huge number of music files are compressed to save space that plays a major role in the computer world.
Punjabi Music
Apart from these free websites there are paid sources also that offer the best sound quality of audio as well as video downloads. But the question arises how many people buy songs online? Hardly a few counted numbers! Everyone in the present generation try to grab maximum of their needs free of cost. Then why will music lovers lighten their pockets if they can get the same song completely free of cost. Yet there are few numbers who go for excellent sound quality and download songs from paid websites.
Punjabi Mp3 Download
All the music websites have a huge collection of Hindi movie songs ranging from the first song of the movie 'Alam Ara' to the entire range of latest movie songs. The movie Alam Ara was released in 1931 and since then a number of Hindi movies are directed with utmost excellence. All the movies have atleast one song that is known as the title song. Apart from the title song there are a good number of sound tracks in almost all the Hindi movies that gear up various issues like national causes, friendship, patriotism, love, and relationship.
As time passed by, many songs came into picturization that helped in popularizing a good number of Hindi movies. Some of the super duper hits like DDLJ, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Khamoshi, Maine Pyar Kiya, and even the latest movie 3 Idiots also hold credit to the track numbers they embrace. The amazing songs of these films also increased the popularity of specific musicians, singers, and composers.
With so many songs its actually not possible to list all the songs at one place but internet definitely has the entire list. Whether the song is from a old hit or from the mid 90s Hindi movie or the latest 20th century movie, from the internet music lovers can download any desired Hindi movie song and create his or her own personlized music album.

has anyone thought about the diegesis of music in bollywood/south asian masala movies? there's no doubt that it functions differently than in western musicals... but HOW exactly? in most western musical theatre the music seems to non-diegetic (as in, the characters and those around them are unaware that they are singing) unless it is a performance, then it is diegetic/source music (they are singing in the story- everyone knows they're singing).
perhaps the difference comes from the fact that masala movies are movies first and (to my knowledge) are often not adapted from musical stage productions (though the movies CAN be adapted into musicals in the case of mughal-e-azam, hum aapke hain koun, and dilwale dulhania le jayenge). but in masala movies the line between "this is a performance in the story" and "i am singing to express my feelings" seems somewhat blurred. Señorita from ZNMD is a performance, they are singing, everyone knows it. Bum Bum Bole from Taare Zameen Par, they're singing, Aamir Khan is a funny little dude singing a funky clown song. But then what about Kashmiri Main Tu Kanyakumari from Chennai Express? Singing in a car... okay, that's a performance! But the choreographed dance number? Is that happening or is it symbolizing their journey across India? Mere Khwabon Mein from DDLJ is definitely (probably?) Simran expressing her dreams and such, and she's not singing in universe. But then what about Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna? Raj singing at Simran would make sense as a performance at a mehndi, but what about Simran singing back?
OH and since the popularity of film/musical songs works differently in South Asia than it does in the States... how does continuity work in that? Such as the medley from Mujhse Dosti Karoge, in which Hrithik's character sings Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Rani's character... does this mean that KKHH exists in this universe?? Does Rani Mukherjee the actress then exist in this universe and her character in this movie have a doppleganger?? What about all of Shahrukh Khan's movies... especially with the antakshari scenes in Chennai Express? Does Om Shanti Om exist in that universe? Does SRK the actor exist? If not then how did these songs come about? Is it similar to the NSU (Nickelodeon Sitcom Universe) in which there are gray parts of one's mind when it comes to crossover events? This FASCINATES me to no end you don't understand.
side note. i want to see someone that has directed a masala movie tackle one of these american musical to movie adaptations. no more tom hooper. i want farah khan or karan johar or ss rajamouli to direct cats and see how THAT looks. if tom hooper had directed k3g it would not have been as fantastical (such as the "my son is here" super sense) as it was.
let american movie musicals have as much fun as south asian masala films do.
there seem to be some (paywalled) academic papers on the matter but it'd be interesting to hear anyone's thoughts on it!

[ad_1] As long term readers know, I always do a Valentine’s theme. And I was gonna be fancy this year, but whatever, Pathaan is still in theaters and we are all riding a wave of SRK love, so let’s DO this!!!! For each Jodi, rank first to last for chemistry! Shahrukh and Deepika Pathaan Top chemistry, they both feel adult and sexy and powerful Chennai Express Next best chemistry, they’ve got a great swoony romance vibe here Happy New Year This would be last, except for the two moments in the middle of songs when their eyes meet Om Shanti Om Dips is super cute and young in this, it just feels more like friendship than equals to me. Shahrukh and Anushka Jab Harry Met Sejal So many magical moments in this, crazy sexual and mental and every kind of chemistry Jab Tak Hain Jaan Such good chemistry it ruined the movie because you just wanted them together all the time. But they weren’t, so behind JHMS Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi A very soft quiet kind of chemistry here, but effective Zero I just hate everything about this movie Shahrukh and Kajol Dilwale Purely for chemistry, it’s the tops. They are mature and sexy and super good together even if the plot’s nonsense. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai One word: Gazebo Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham One word: Bangles My Name is Khan Very traumatic movie that I never want to watch again, but you really REALLY buy them as a couple in this DDLJ So good, but they are so young. The pure chemistry isn’t distilled yet. Baazigar Yeh Kaali Jaali Aankhen!!!! Karan-Arjun Roll in the hay! Shahrukh and Juhi One 2 Ka 4 Mess of a movie, super super sexy. Yes Boss They are mostly friend-energy in this, but that just makes the moments of romance that more intense. Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman Cute young passionate couple! Like puppies. Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani Definitely Friend Energy in this one. Duplicate Sigh. I wasn’t even gonna include this, but then I remembered Lily P and Twinkles. Be grateful! I put in your stupid movie! Shahrukh and Rani Chalte Chalte Marriage realness vibes, plus love and sex and warmth and good things. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna This would be the top because they have a lot of swoony moments here, but also a lot of angst, and angst isn’t sexy. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Pretty darn good for a first movie! Okay, now fight me!!! Like this:Like Loading... Related [ad_2] Source link
