Aiyyaa: Cute Movie, Confusing Logic
Follow me on Instagram: @thatguyanesejournalist
Let’s talk about Sachin Kundalkar’s Aiyyaa.
Tumblr media
Meenakshi Deshpande, an outspoken and imaginative girl from a conservative family, chases after the man of her dreams while avoiding an arranged engagement/marriage put together by her family.
Tumblr media
I can already feel this is going to be a long post. And not in a good way.
See, here’s the synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes (which is the synopsis that pops up on Google when you do a quick search of the film).
“Meenakshi is a drama queen who falls in love with Surya, a Tamil actor. Although she is engaged to another person, she still dreams of getting married to Surya.”
So naturally, I thought this movie was a fleshed-out story about Meenakshi, who is a fangirl, chasing after an actor named Surya and they both fall in love while her parents are setting up her arranged marriage (the music videos did not help in aiding this delusion)
But I wasn’t even close. In fact, that would’ve been a bit more interesting than what the film actually delivers: cuteness, but confusion if you think too hard about the logistics.
Tumblr media
Surya is a painter who is given a few lines at best. Also (maybe it’s because we see everything from Meenakshi’s point of view) it doesn’t seem like he’s that interested in her the entire movie until the ending. You see little hints, like him dropping his handkerchief so she could wipe her tears. But, nothing else. I think the director was trying to mimic an actual crush, but it came through for me as Meenakshi daydreaming about a man who isn’t interested (I get you, girl).
Tumblr media
Let’s talk about the other elephant in the room: Meenakshi STALKING this man. I understand the obsession, the fake scenarios in your head, and even talking to people who know him because you’re trying to get close to the guy. But not only did she follow him to his house, she:
Interacted with his mother and lied about her actual identity
Stole a shirt from him to smell his scent without him knowing (although you later find out he did know)
Oh, and let’s not forget the detail that she followed him all the way from his house to the incense factory at the end of the movie because she was “curious about him”. I get this movie is supposed to be feminist-forward (she takes charge of her own love life instead of succumbing to an arranged marriage), but I was too distracted by her actions to acknowledge the "women taking agency over themselves" message.
Stalking someone you “like” is definitely creepy no matter what gender you are.
Tumblr media
Aside from that, the dialogue was a bit lackluster. One of the only bright sides is Meenakshi's rant (found here). However, the rest was cringy, especially the "Main daru nahi peeta, nahi peeta, nahi peeta" and the "Main bhi nahi peeti, nahi peeti, nahi peeti" lines (I had to pause after I heard that and force myself to keep going).
The soundtrack, composed by Amit Trivedi, lives up to the plot's wackiness and was possibly one of two things that saved the film (Rani was second). But from the man that released “Navrai Majhi” (English Vinglish) and “Jhallah Wallah” (Ishaqzaade) the same year, this movie’s soundtrack underwhelms a bit for me. This was more because I only remember two songs out of the whole set and not because he made mediocre music. The songs are:
Dreamum Wakeuppam (to my South Indians, I'm sorry but it's catchy as hell)
Sava Dollar (Lavani)
Tumblr media
The movie is 152 minutes long (2 hours and 32 minutes). If you want to watch a movie that you don’t have to think too hard about, this is it. Stream Aiyyaa on Netflix, grab a snack, and enjoy!
Do you agree or disagree? Let me know in the comments!

Nani regrets lashing out against Arshad Warsi for his remark about Kalki 2898 AD turned Prabhas into a ‘joker’: “My choice of words was poor”
Nani, a Telugu celebrity, is in damage control mode after his comments on Arshad Warsi generated a new scandal. Nani found himself trending online just a day after releasing the teaser for his new film, Surya's Saturday, but not for the reasons he had planned. The dispute erupted after a journalist questioned Warsi about his criticism of Prabhas' involvement in the summer movie Kalki 2898 AD. Warsi had expressed his dissatisfaction with Prabhas' portrayal on Unfiltered by Samdish, referring to him as a 'joker' and comparing him to Mel Gibson in Mad Max.
Tumblr media
Nani's initial reaction, when translated into English, appeared harsh. "The guy you are referring about must have received the maximum publicity in his life. "You are unnecessarily glorifying an insignificant issue," he was quoted as saying. While this elicited cheers from Prabhas' followers, it caused outrage from Hindi filmgoers who perceived it as an insult to Warsi.
In an interview with Mid-Day, Nani emphasized that his remarks were 'lost in translation.' He acknowledged his feelings for Prabhas and his natural desire to defend him but said that his opinion changed after watching the entire video of Warsi's interview.
"I noticed online how a language sounds when translated into English. "That happens on social media," he said. "I just heard what he had said because the chopped video was all over social media, just like mine was yesterday. See, it's about a very special person. When it's about someone you really care about, you immediately react and say, 'Why are you assigning so much importance to an inconsequential matter?' However, after seeing so many reactions on social media, I went back and watched the entire thing. So now I get it. The situation has been blown out of proportion by the media and social media. And even my reaction has been exaggerated.
Nani underlined the necessity of actors being careful with their language when making public declarations. "Arshad Warsi ji is an excellent performer, and we all adored him in Munna Bhai, not just in the north and south, but throughout India. "It's a family movie," he explained. "When we sit with our friends in our homes, we can criticize films and actors. However, as actors, we must be very careful with our word choices. So, in that way, he and I are both victims."
The actor used a hilarious analogy to describe his new film, in which the protagonist focuses his fury on a specific day. "Like Surya's Saturday, we all need to have that one day when we react and not react the same day so that we can really gauge our words much better."
Nani freely recognized his mistake and accepted responsibility for it. "My word choice was likewise terrible. The most important thing you can do is accept your regrets. But I'm also stating that it sounds so horrible when translated. In this case, the journalist was repeatedly bringing up the subject, and I was attempting to point out that they were overemphasizing it. Someone expressed their views, and there was a reply; that is how it began. One comment from either side will be blown out of proportion. And if we slipped, it's time we accepted responsibility, whether it was my or someone else's. We must go through this entire period before moving on because emotions can be strong and you may react to something and think, 'It was unnecessary, why did I react?'"
Nani respected Warsi's freedom to express his viewpoint but noted that better wording should have been used. "At the end of the day, what matters is that Kalki is a Rs. 1,000 crore film. People adore it. Of course, you don't have to like it. We all have opinions, and everyone has the right to speak to them, even Warsi. However, he should use better terms. Also, who should we correct? But someone asked for our opinion, and we responded."
Moving beyond the current debate, Nani stressed the positive ties between Bollywood and South Indian movies. "I've always been a fan of directors and actresses here, and we grew up watching their films. Fans of Telugu cinema clash on social media. Every day, you need a war-related topic. That's how they spend their mornings and evenings. This is exciting for them. But let us stop taking social media warfare seriously. When we meet, we don't consider the North-South divide. The biggest difference will be between our favorite foods and yours (laughter). In fact, we desire to learn more about each other. Cinema is quite popular right now. In 2024, there will be Indian cinema, and we will all operate as studios from various regions, producing films in various languages and distributing them throughout India. There is mutual respect, which we express whenever possible. This has now increased. That's why, I suppose, even minor events elicit more emotion because we didn't have this (love exchange) before. If such things happened every other day, no one would have noticed this one. But we've been seeing love for so long that all of these words are major news.

If such things happened every day, nobody would have noticed this one. But we've been seeing love for so long that these phrases feel revolutionary. Fans and industry professionals have both reacted negatively to this. However, Arshad Warsi has not responded to the backlash

Tribute 790.
Tribute to Cinematographer Rathnavelu 790. Today, I am compelled to write about a prominent figure in the Southern film industry, renowned for his remarkable visual work and significant impact in recent years. This personality is none other than Cinematographer Rathnavelu. He commenced his career alongside veteran Cinematographer and Director Rajiv Menon, contributing to numerous advertisement films. Notably, he has contributed to several films across three languages, which deserve recognition. The majority of his works have been successful, featuring some of today's leading actors such as Rajnikanth, Vijay, Surya, and Jayam Ravi.Rathnavelu is well-known for his proficiency in visual effects and outdoor cinematography, showcasing a distinctive framework in each of his films. The South Indian film industry has gained recognition for its skilled technicians, particularly in the realm of cinematography. I have had the pleasure of watching a few films by this expert, including Aravindhan, Sethu, Nanda, Jayam, Bhagavathi, Thirumalai, Vaaranam Aayiram, and Peralagan. Although I haven't personally seen the much-discussed recent film Enthiran, I have witnessed the craftsmanship behind its production. My admiration goes out to the talented cinematographer Rathnavelu. The collaboration between Shankar, Rajnikanth, A.R. Rahman, and Ratnavelu undoubtedly resulted in the remarkable delivery of Enthiran, without any exaggeration. I am confident that the soft-spoken, silent, and smiling Rathnavelu will earn many more accolades in the days to come.

Non-Western Films Worth Watching
For the second year running, here’s a year-end recap of very good non-Western films I saw during the course of the previous year, in no particular order:
Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts (Marlina Si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak, Mouly Surya, Indonesia, 2017): You’ve heard of Iranian vampire Western, now get ready for... Indonesian rape-revenge Western. This is seriously amazing, one of the best films I saw last year -- and it was, of course, directed by a woman -- on Amazon Prime
Capernaum (کفرناحوم‎, Nadine Labaki, Lebanon, 2018): A prodigy child actor carries on his shoulders this film about poverty, immigration and neglect. It’s beautifully shot, and very heavy
Dear Ex (誰先愛上他的, Mag Hsu and Hsu Chih-yen, Taiwan, 2018): This one is about a teenager whose dad dies and who subsequently gets acquainted with the dad’s surviving live-in boyfriend. Mostly a comedy, definitely some hard-to-stomach moments -- on Netflix
The Seen and the Unseen (Sekala Niskala, Kamila Andini, Indonesia, 2017): It’s hard to describe this one in a way that makes people want to see it, even though I loved it. Films about children in general, and the imaginary life of children in particular, can be hard to pull off, but this one does it in such a masterful way -- on Amazon Prime
Under the Shadow ( زیر سایه, Babak Anvari, Iran, 2015): This is the first film made by the man who gave us Wounds last Halloween. It takes place during the Iran-Irak war and it’s one of those films where you can tell that the horror is a metaphor but it still works. And it blew me away -- on Netflix
Shoplifters ( 万引き家族, Manbiki Kazoku, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Japan, 2018): A story about found families and living in the margins
Rafiki (Wanuri Kahiu, Kenya, 2018): Everyone was talking about this, and with good reason -- although strong trigger warnings for homophobic violence apply
May the Devil Take You (Sebelum iblis menjemput, Timo Tjahjanto, Indonesia, 2018): This is a good horror film I stumbled upon while scrolling -- on Netflix
Dark Water (仄暗い水の底から, Honogurai Mizu no soko kara, Hideo Nakata, Japan, 2002): Classic horror film, every bit good as people say
Perfect Blue (パーフェクトブル, Pāfekuto Burū, Satoshi Kon, Japan,1997): Finally got around to watching this one. I prefer Paprika, but they’re both great
Taxi (تاکسی‎, Jafar Panahi, Iran, 2015): Filmmaker Jafar Panahi passes himself off as a taxi driver and drives people around Tehran. This is not a documentary and is way interesting than this sounds -- on Amazon Prime
Little Forest (리틀 포레스트, Liteul Poleseuteu, Yim Soon-rye, South, Korea, 2018): Watch this if you love food, if you’re a child of the countryside, if you like beautiful, contemplative films
What Will People Say (Hva vil folk si, Iram Haq, Norway*, 2017): Yes! I know Norway is a Western country. I’m including the film in this list however because it 1) was directed by a Pakistani-Norwegian woman, 2) was shot mainly in India, 3) features mainly actors of colour, and 4) features dialogue mostly in Urdu. This autobiographical film is about a Norwegian-Pakistani teenager who gets sent “home” by her parents after they find her with a Norwegian boy in her bedroom. It is devastating, and you should watch it
