Coco ilu PLEASE drop the queer reading of Bunnicula essay 😭 hope ur having a good day, i am dying at the thought of (chester??) the cat looking at that tiny bunny sucking the red off an apple like 'i know what u are..'
!!!! I love you too, anon, omg, thank you so much for sending me such a delightful question! Had a surprisingly decent day as well, so I hope you had a great one too!
Thanks so much for asking me about Bunnicula - I read it in about second grade, after my 'introduction' to Dracula beyond pop culture was Dead and Loving It the year prior (and seeing Bela Lugosi clips on the old movies channels here and there), and this was a much more digestible, less terrifying experience of vampires for baby Coco.
First off, the "I know what you are" memes are funny, but genuinely, I think Chester the cat and Harold the dog were such an old married couple. They're not quite as acrid as Statler and Waldorf or as affectionate as Timon and Pumbaa, but the way they snark at each other, affectionately disparage one another's literary tastes, and tease about various neuroses, as well as playing Holmes and Watson for the mystery of the story speaks for itself! That Chester is the one who needs to overcome his prejudice of outsiders is an interesting wrinkle to this, but he's working on it through therapy and, literally, as the text says, "finding himself". I mean, if this isn't a gay cat unpacking his internalized issues and respectability politics with the help of the zanier Bunnicula and the more self-assured Harold, I don't know what is.
Next, there's Bunnicula himself; an homage to tropes of both classic vampire films and the trashy television fare of the mid-20th century, which is already historically very popular with queer people for many reasons - camp factor, the affinity many of the LGBTQ+ community towards horror, and especially how easily identifiable the vampire in particular is as a queer figure. The core message of the story is that of accepting and celebrating the differences of others; Bunnicula is indeed a vampire, but, being a vampire rabbit, only sucks the life out of vegetables and is therefore harmless - it's Chester's judgment of him making him an outsider that's the issue. (Sidenote that the concept is cute + funny + kid-friendly enough that it sidesteps the usual lame cop-out that is the vegetarian vampire.) The vampire as an outsider - and hence queer - is an age-old reading. Further, while there's definitely space for queer narratives of feeling like a monster and/or imperfect/toxic stories aimed at teenagers and adults, the vampire as specifically oppressed and in a work aimed at kids works uniquely well in this context since Bunnicula's harmlessness allows him to sidestep the usual conundrums of monster-posing-genuine-threat-as-stand-in-for-oppressed group (looking at you, Zootopia.). (Added addendum that while I mentioned narratives for kids having to exist in a simpler moral universe here, this 1:1 is an issue I have with many 'vampire as a stand-in for queer people' narratives -- True Blood/Southern Vampire Mysteries ran into it frequently, although otoh I found the latest Interview With The Vampire TV show to handle it with better nuance. It's tricky territory, to say the least)
The meta-narrative to this can't be ignored. The author, James Howe, came out as gay decades after writing this with his late first wife, Debbie, and has expressed many times that though he was closeted/uncertain at the time of writing the original novel, he on reflection must have subconsciously imbued it with themes of being a horror-loving, artistic, bullied outsider that reflected his own childhood experiences. Likewise, he's noted that Debbie, who was Jewish and had similar tastes and experiences, was probably doing the same. Since coming out, James Howe has engaged in extensive anti-bullying and equality-focused advocacy work, and has since made his priority incorporating themes of compassion towards the outsider in all his writings for kids - his later works have even featured canon gay characters. From what I've read, these themes have persisted through the rest of the Bunnicula series (though I think I only ever read the first book).
All this to say: Chester and Harold are married, Bunnicula is their flamboyant housemate.

Me about to rewatch True Blood for Sookie x Eric knowing full well that they aren’t endgame and they decided to ruin the relationship and pair Sookie with some random guy:
Tumblr media
This will forever be my villain origin story I hated that.
Sookie and Eric were perfect and they would’ve been better than showing Sookie with some random guy at the end and pairing Eric with N*ra for a bit in the show (I despise that character lmao)
I would’ve preferred if Eric turned her into a Vampire that would’ve been awesome. If they ever did a reboot (probably best they don’t though lmao the cast for this was perfect) I’d love Eric and Sookie to be canon endgame I don’t care about book canon lol

Seeking literate, meme-loving nerd
In the past, I've written long posts to find partners, but I feel like that might scare some people off, so let's go with short and sweet!
You can call me Evie! I'm in my mid-twenties and working in southern California. I have been writing for well over a decade and received a degree in literature, and writing is an amazing source of creativity for me! I am looking for a fellow nerd who not only wants to inspire each other to write, but will also talk OOC with me about ideas, really world-build together as we collectively squee over our budding stories. I have your basic limits and generally like to play multiple characters, with one or maybe two as the main focus, writing anywhere from a half page to ten pages if the mood strikes me (and we inspire each other to do so!). I'm a bit of a glutton for detail, what can I say? I'm mostly looking for a FxF main pairing, any other types can be thrown in there on the side as well. I am happy to write through email, google docs, and discord! :)
As far as particular fandoms and ideas, we can discuss what particular pairings and themes you'd like to explore once you contact me! I am generally willing to play most characters in a fandom simply because I've done quite a lot of them in the past, and I also absolutely LOVE making our own well-crafted characters to plop into an established world. Let's scream over our cuties together, yes??
Twilight - but with less sparkle, MORE GAY, and much better writing. Would really love to do this!! :')
Star Trek AOS - Adore these movies, would love to play around with these characters and this world! Royalty AU??
Royalty/Fantasy/Medieval - anything that falls under these categories, especially something we craft together, would be a dream. A princess falls in love with her new guard? Werwolves, vampires, and goblins, oh my! Unlimited possibilities!
The Mummy - I've never gotten the chance to write anything in this fandom, but would love to explore a similar universe of endearing idiots trying to solve ancient mysteries!
Harry Potter - we can go as far back or as far forward as you'd like, or stick with some good old Hogwarts times, perhaps during a Triwizard Tournament year?
Marvel - I'm a huge fan of the movies, particularly Tony and Thor, so ezploring this world with canon or OC characters would be fun! It's definitely last on my list for a reason though: I need something really enticing to pull me back into Marvel, as it's been my main RP world for a long time now and I think a break is due.
Let mw know which fandoms you'd like to hear some plots/themes for. :) can't wait to evilly scheme with you!!

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading? #29
Tumblr media
It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week.  It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog   and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!
What Did I Read This Last Week?
Tumblr media
Riveted by Meljean Brook, Narrated by Alison Larkin
#3 The Iron Seas
Steampunk Romance
Exciting airship adventure on the way to and in Iceland, engaging characters and creative new plot and steampunk inventions.  Dragged a little in places, but still a solid outing for the series.
Tumblr media
Al Capone Throws Me a Curve by Gennifer Choldenko, narrated by Kirby Heyborne
#4 Al Capone at Alcatraz
MG Historical Fiction
What a sheer delight!  For kids for teens, and for adults.  Loved the way the author settled a wry, coming of age story in such a historical setting.  Disabilities, prison life and reform, family, baseball, and the Great Depression feature in this one.
Tumblr media
Ain’t She a Peach by Molly Harper
#2 Southern Eclectic
Contemporary Romance
A mortician/coroner and the sheriff in a rural county/small town butt heads while a teen punk attempts to sabotage the McCready businesses.  It was cute and fun, but the heroine was a meh for me.
Tumblr media
Death Below Stairs by Jennifer Ashley
#1 Below Stairs
Historical Mystery
After the prequel, this was a strong full-length with a good mix of history, mystery, and the personal dynamics of the characters.  Looking forward to what comes next for intrepid and independent cook, Kat, along with mysterious and clever, handyman, Daniel
Tumblr media
Death and the Redheaded Woman by Loretta Ross
#1 Auction House Mystery
Cozy Mystery
Debut book in a new series.  A few loose spots, but an overall win with engaging characters, great elements like Wren’s past and the work for the auction house and Death’s recent tough times and his new work as bounty hunter and detective.  A jewelry treasure hunt!
Tumblr media
Island of the Mad by Laurie R. King
#15 Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes
Historical Mystery
Another superior outing for the series.  Thoughtful moments interspersed with suspenseful action, detecting, and well drawn historical backdrop.  Russell and Holmes are a fantastic team.
WHAT AM I READING NOW?
Tumblr media
Grey Sister by Mark Lawrence
#2 Book of the Ancestor
Fantasy
Tumblr media
Off the Ice by Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn, narrated by Kirt Graves
M/M Contemporary, Sports Romance

Top Five Favourite Polarizing Books
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme/tag hosted by Samantha where every week book readers across all platforms share their list of Top 5 books/characters/genres, etc. it all depends on the topic for that week. If you’d be interested in joining T5W you can find the group on Goodreads.
This week’s topic is about books that readers either love or hate. There’s not really a middle ground for them, thus making them polarizing. These are the ones where we fall on the love it side of things, and for me personally, this ended up being more series that are polarizing that I love, than standalone books.
1. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
This is more a polarizing author in all honesty. People either seem to really like the characters and stories that John Green tells, or they hate them. There is no in between where people are like “eh, it was okay”. There is no middle ground. I really liked this book although, it was the first one of his that I read. I’ve tried to read An Abundance of Katherines but that had too much math in the beginning and made my head hurt. I thought Looking for Alaska was good although, it wasn’t one of my favourites. I have Paper Towns and will be reading that this year, so we’ll see what my opinions on that are.
2. The Southern Vampire Mysteries / Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris
I have read this entire series, even After Dead where we learn what happened to the secondary and tertiary characters. That’s how much I liked this series when I read it. I understand that some people hate this series, that they like the tv show so much more, that‘s fine. I personally think the show and books are two very different things, because they start veering off from each other at the end of the first seasons, but I like these books. I really like the characters and it’s true that some of the events read like a supernatural soap opera at times, but I loved it.
3. Precious Stone / Ruby Red trilogy by Kerstin Gier
These have time travel, a bit of political intrigue, fun characters to follow, and a whole lot of drama. I read these so quickly and really enjoyed them. I didn’t even mind that I could figure out some of the major plot twists before they were told to us, because I still enjoyed the story these books told so much. I get that some people think it’s insta-love and think the plot is pretty weak, but I didn’t have many problems with this series.
4. The Robert Langdon series by Dan Brown
I know all the reasons people don’t like these books. I understand their points of view, but you have to understand I am such trash for this series. I enjoy them so much; they are so much fun to read and try to put the little pieces of the puzzle together. I don’t read these for their believability or anything like that, because I know that half this stuff would never actually happen. But that’s what makes it so entertaining to read, because they’re so fantastical and a little over the top.
5. Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer
Yes, I admit it. I liked most of these books when I read them when I was like, 15. It was right before it got super hyped, and actually I was in the middle of the hype when I read the last one, which I’m wasn’t super happy about in any event. Here’s what I have to say: these are not terrible books. I’ve read way worse ones, and read way worse fanfiction. This series has really great secondary characters; they’re my favourites and why I like this series so much. I do have to admit that I enjoyed the twist on the whole vampire thing, besides the sparkling skin. The main trio/love triangle are what I don’t like, because they’re kind of bland and just annoying. The baby thing in the last book was weird in my opinion, but I appreciate it being there because we got even more awesome secondary characters.

ellie's emporium
Hi there! I'm Ellie, a 25-year-old female living in the EST. I've been roleplaying for over half my life, and after a brief hiatus from it, I am looking to find a couple of partners again! I am particularly in the mood for something romantic, dark and/or disturbing.
Guidelines
I roleplay all pairings with my preferences as mxf, m//, f// in that order. Right now I have a preference for mxf plots because I normally do sooooo much //.
For MxF pairings, I don't have a gender preference for my main, but for certain plots/pairings the female character may be non-negotiable due to the high prevalence of "female-only" roleplayers that contact me. These will be properly marked below.
I will gladly double but it is not mandatory. [By doubling I mean I will do either a complex plot revolving four characters, or two completely separate plots--not the same plot but reverse genders]
I really enjoy using face claims/having muse blogs to spam with gifs/plot bunnies/memes, but this is totally optional if that's too much to handle!
I enjoy smut but there must be a plot, too! I can link to my f-list upon request.
If it's on my list, I probably have a plot or starter idea for it. I also really love hearing other people's plots. That said, please don't contact me without ideas in hand.
Limits bestiality, vore, characters under 16, watersports/scat, etc. I am open to exploring incest, dub/noncon, abuse, etc with mature partners who aren't fetishizing it or use such elements excessively.
I do my best to reply daily but sometimes my replies may come every two days. If I'm going to be away longer than that, I will always let you know.
Themes dark/horror/psychological • hurt/comfort • taboo/forbidden relationships • interracial relationships • kidnapping/trafficking/enslavement • stockholm syndrome • murder mystery • neo noir • pregnancy • marriage • pregnancy/children • affairs • incest • age gaps • southern gothic • cyberpunk • steampunk • mountain towns • equestrian • revolutions • double agents • unhealthy power dynamics
Genres Vampires/werewolves Witches/covens Anything supernatural, really Apocalypse/post-apocalypse/post-post-apocalypse Space travel/exploration/horror Near future dystopian Genetically modified humans Medieval fantasy Colonial America Victorian era Old West Antebellum South/Civil War/Reconstruction WWII 1950s 1960s Honestly any historical period, I fucking love historical settings
Fandoms Harry Potter - Marauders and oc's only Dragon Age - oc preference, canons welcome Mass Effect - oc preference, canons welcome The Last of Us - oc preference, canons welcome
Contact Email: [email protected] Discord: elliebobellie [ooc only] I hope to hear from you soon! Have a great day! (:
